The next U3A Blaauwberg meeting isscheduled for Tuesday 28 August at10:30.

Tea will be served between 09:45 and10:15 at the Milnerton Library Audito-rium where guest speaker MichaelJohnson will speak about his recentvisits to Iran, China, Vietnam andCambodia.

Members are requested to weartheir membership tags and pay an ent-ry of R5 or R10 for non-members.

Joy Wellbeloved can be contacted on021 554 1418 or Ivar Drew on021 552 2953.

Guest speaks onoverseas visits

Cape Town harbour received a visit fromthe HMS Dauntless, a British Naval war-ship – declared the most advanced anti-air vessel in the world.

Pat Downing from Table View along withfellow members of the Ship Society of SouthAfrica were invited aboard the vessel whileits engines were being serviced in the har-bour.

Downing was appreciative of the vessel’ssleek and uncluttered appearance.

“On going aboard I was expecting narrowcompanion-ways, low bulkheads, dim light-ing, oil odours and cramped crew quarters, all the things that contributed to the magicalmysteries of the old ships.

“What I saw was neon lighting, comforta-ble and homely crew cabins, steamy hotshowers, a full-on laundry and a galley boast-ing aromatic smells of cooking like that outof a Bisto jar,” Downing said.

Indeed a far cry from the infrastructure

found in the ships of yesteryear. The modern day computerised ship sur-

rounded by computer screens which resem-bles a games alley, is home to a crew of uni-versity graduates, some of who are still stud-ying.

“I was impressed by the spaciousness andcomfort of this warship compared to olderones I have spent time on,” said Fred Metcalffrom Pinelands.

The ship’s air surveillance radar is capa-ble of detecting 1 000 targets at a range of upto 400 km as well as detecting outer atmos-phere objects such as ballistic missiles.

The fact that the two Rolls-Royce gas tur-bines do not belong to the Royal Navy butrather are leased from Rolls-Royce on a fullmaintenance arrangement was another in-teresting innovation.

Rodney Marquis from Durbanville foundit interesting to see how things have changedin all aspects from the overall design to themost modern computerised systems.

. From page 1.Once inside volunteers are alerted to the

presence of the child by a pressure plate thatautomatically sends an SMS.

Although the safe itself hasn’t seen any ba-bies being dumped Ferroli-Highfield saysthey have aided two mothers in not givingup their children.

“Both the moms saw the notice on the cen-tre’s door and contacted me. The one womanhad a seven-month-old baby and four-year-old daughter.

“They slept on a floor of a shack in DuNoon and the baby was very ill.

“We helped her by introducing her to akangaroo mother, paying the creche feesthat were in arrears and supplied her withgroceries and helped her find a job.

“The other mother had young twins. Wehelped her to go back home to Ciskei aftercoming to Cape Town for work,” Kim said.

She says in all instances they try to reunitethe mother and child. Kim added that shewill investigate the possibility of establish-ing a baby safe in the Milnerton area.

The 23-year-old Thabo Bester, alsoknown as the Facebook Rapist, receiveda life sentence at the Western Cape HighCourt on Thursday for killing the model,Nomfundo Tyhulu (23), in Sunset Beachlast year.

Bester was also sentenced to an additional25 years on a charge of aggravated robbery, since he stole possessions of Tyhulu after hekilled her.

He is called the Facebook Rapist as he usedthe social networking site to lure women tomeet him, claiming that international mod-elling scouts were interested in them.

Bester pleaded for mitigating factors suchas his own alleged rape, poverty and an alco-hol-ravaged family to be taken into consider-

ation, but acting Judge Judith Cloete, none-theless, handed out the maximum sentence.

In September last year, Bester stabbed Ty-hulu in the chest at a bed-and-breakfast inSunset Beach.

On his departure from the guest house inthe morning, he told reception staff that Ty-hulu was still sleeping and not to be dis-turbed before 14:00 to ensure his getaway.

The court has been convinced that themurder was premeditated.

In an unrelated case, Bester was previous-ly sentenced to 50 years in prison for rapingand robbing two women.

Hewas sentenced to 15 years in jail on eachcount of rape and 15 years on each count ofrobbery. Five years of each robbery was sus-pended.

The ongoing complaints from Table Viewresidents about the disruptive roadworksalong Blaauwberg Road is not lost on city of-ficials.

The city last week thanked the residentsand businesses on Blaauwberg Road fortheir patience during the ongoing construc-tion for MyCiTi bus services.

According to city officials work is pro-gressing as fast as possible on BlaauwbergRoad, and residents and business people us-ing service roads to access their drivewayscan now see how the situation will be reme-died.

On the northern side of the road betweenWood Road and Donkin Drive, access todriveways has been restored, lighting is upand adequate footpaths are in place. Thiswork is continuing along the rest of thenorthern side, and along the entire southernside, of Blaauwberg Road.

The restricted access has been a result ofroad-widening, which is necessary to makespace for the bus lanes in the centre of theroad. This road widening has been complet-ed between Wood and Donkin Roads.

Along this section, the traffic has beenmoved from the right to the left side of theroad, to make way for the construction of thebus lanes alongside the median. However, there will be no further restricted access todriveways or sidewalks.

TheEskomelectrical supply cables at vari-ous locations along Blaauwberg Road will beinstalled after driveway access is restored,as the temporary service roads block off ac-cess for the cable installation.

The city has in the meantime, employedsecurity guards to patrol the unlit stretchesof road at night, and will continue to do sountil lighting is restored.

Efforts to minimise traffic disruptions

along Blaauwberg Road are ongoing.Sections of Blaauwberg Road have been

converted into single lanes to facilitate con-struction, these lane restrictions are howev-er only imposed during off-peak periods09:00 until 16:00.

“We know that residents and businessowners along Blaauwberg Road have beeninconvenienced during the construction forMyCiTi services, and while we are doing allwe can to minimise this convenience, wemust thank people wholeheartedly for theirpatience,” said mayoral committee memberfor transport, roads and stormwater BrettHerron.

“It is all for a worthy cause. This area isto be the first to experience a quality publictransport service. This service will serve theresidents for generations to come, helping tocreate sustainable, people-friendly neigh-bourhoods in the greater Table View area.”

City thanks all for MyCiTi works patience

Big problems! Capt Alwyn Jenkins from the Table View police station gets behindthe steering wheel of an impounded minibus taxi. Taxis were checked for the necessary permits to operate on that specific route as well as for the transport of stolen goods. Ten taxis wereconfiscated and driven by police and traffic members to the provincial traffic poundin Maitland. The drivers were released with a warning to appear in court. Photo:LeonSteenkamp

LEON STEENKAMP

A healthy state of emotional be-ing is key to being healthy andhappy in life.

It is a belief that Neil Johnson, alocal certified Reiki practitionerand clinical hypnotherapist, sub-scribes to without fail.

“We are just a bag of emotions. What we need to learn in this lifeis to process negative emotions sothat we can get rid of them, so thatthey don’t do damage to our bod-ies,” Neil says.

Negative emotions which moreoften than not originate from a lowself esteem are the root of nearly allrelationship problems.

“Negative energy is what causesillness and ailments. We generate alot of negative energy in our lives.Problems in relationships and cir-cumstances result in illness whichexacerbates stress and relationshipproblems. The vast majority ofwhich end up in divorce,” Neil ex-plains.

Finding a solution for homesbreaking up in this manner seems

paramount in Table View which issaid to have among the highest con-centration of divorced families inthe country.

Over the last six yearsNeil has in-terviewed more than 200 womenwho are divorced.

“I established that the majority ofmarriages ended because of emo-tional, physical or financial abuse. It is a problem that goes both ways, but the majority of cases is abuse bythe male partner.”

In most cases problems occur dueto a lack of self esteem which is al-most always a problem with bothpartners.

“Our objective in life is to dealwith fear. It ismainly fear that caus-es relationship problems. For ex-ample: a husband fears that his wifeis cleverer than him and then beatsher into submission.

“This leads to there being a domi-nant and a subservient party. Usu-ally it is the woman who is the sub-servient one and she eventuallyfeels responsible for the problemsin the marriage or partnership.

“Living in the now is probablythe single biggest factor in regain-

ing your self esteem,” he says.He adds that this ultimately leads

to the children suffering.“The children are subjected to

problems that the parents experi-ence because the care and nurtur-ing that they should receive isn’tgiven because of the arguing andfighting between the parents.”

He says that addressing problemswith children who come from a bro-ken home is therefore only half thesolution.

“You need to address the parents’problems as well.”

Neil now wants to help the Blaau-wberg Rotary Club after hearingabout its project to build a new ther-apy room at Blouberg Ridge Prima-ry School.

“In this case I would be able to as-sist by teaching the teachers toteach the children an international-ly proven energy technique calledCortices Tapping which may beused to enable the child (or adult),to focus better, ease pain, heal morequickly, reduce anger, and de-stress – in literally five minutes -with no equipment or medication.Teachers can let them use this

method of tapping at the start ofschool each day, or when they arestressed, and it will help them calmthemselves and focus on the teach-ing,” Neil explains.

He also has plans to host sessionsfor couples who have relationshipproblems and individuals who aredealing with divorces.

In an article about a teen author(“Teen’s debut novel of spiritworld”, TygerBurger 8 Aug 2012) itwas incorrectly stated that 16-year-old Kimite Cancino attends the Uni-ty Christian College in Bothasig.

The school, which has since beenrenamed the Winelands Academy, were inundated with calls from par-ents questioning its policy as aChristian school due to the ideascontained in the Milnerton teenag-er’s book Toxic Persuade Love: Un-der the Influence.

It has since been established thatKimite only attended the school un-til Grade 1, before attending anoth-er primary school. She has beenhome-schooled for the last fouryears and therefore has no affilia-tion with Winelands Academy atpresent. TygerBurger apologisesfor any inconvenience.

Learners of Blouberg RidgeSecondary School will in thenot too distant future haveplenty of shade in which theycan enjoy their lunch duringbreak time.

Colleen Gomes, a green activ-ist from Table View, got the ideato supply the school with much-needed trees just over a monthago.

“The whole idea was to plantmore trees but not just any-where. I pass by the school regu-larly and saw that they had aneed for trees. Being an under-privileged school they can’t af-ford trees so I started an initia-tive to find people who couldsponsor trees,” Gomes ex-plained.

Using her Friendship TreePlant Facebook page and Given-Gain (an online global move-ment connecting activists andcauses) she managed to drum upenough support to buy 70 mostlywild plum trees for the school.

She approached Greenpop, asocial enterprise that runs urbangreening and reforestationprojects in sub-Saharan Africa todo the actual planting of the treesat the school grounds on Satur-

day.Sean Spender, Cape Town

planting manager for Greenpop, was on-hand to explain to the 100volunteers which included mat-rics from the school how to cor-rectly plant and care for a tree.

“The main message I want toput out there is that it is possiblefor anyone to get up and do some-thing if you pool all your resourc-es together,” she said.

She added that she hopes thisinitiative will inspire others.

Dir-kie was dié groep se eerste begunstigde.

Verskeie uithouwedrenne sal aangebiedword.

Johannes 15:5

’n Lewe in ons land is soms minder werdas ’n selfoon of ’n paar rand.

Traffic deptstaff shouldset exampleI welcome the new law in the Cape whichprevents you from using your cellphonewhilst driving unless you have a hands-free kit or you face the consequence ofyour cellphone being confiscated for 24hours plus a R500 fine.

My problem is that this new law mustapply to all road users, including trafficofficers.

Last Tuesday afternoon at 15:55 at Plat-tekloof on the N1 outbound I drove pasta female traffic official chatting away onher cellphone (holding the phone to herear). I first thought whilst going past herin the middle lane (she was in the left lane)that I was imagining it, but I actuallyslowed down and waited for her to pass meand as true as bob she was still chattingaway. I then kept at the same speed as her, travelling next to her. When she spottedme watching her, she quickly “got rid ofthe phone”.

I just feel that she not only endangeredher own life, but mine too as well as otherroad users. Unfortunately for me but luck-ily forher, Iwas alone in the car otherwiseI would have asked my daughter to takea photo of her chatting away.

The details of the vehicle she was driv-ing are GVY 739G, B26 (number on side ofthe car).

Thereafter she took the Old Oak turn-offfrom the N1 and then left into Frans Con-radie in the direction of the Hypermarketin Brackenfell. I carried on with Old OaktowardsOldPaarl road, as this is the routeI travel on a daily basis.

I did contact the telephone number 021931 1646, that is reflected on the traffic ve-hicle she was driving, on Tuesday after-noon when I got home to give them the de-tails, but I suppose nothing has been saidto her, never mind verbal/written warn-ing for breaking the law.

Whatever happened to “setting an ex-ample” as a officer of the law? Or is it justbecause “setting an example” is some-thing of the past, and the new “in” thingis “whatever you can do, I can do better?”For example a brigadier of the SAPS beingarrested for DUI, government officials be-ing corrupt, stealing and even raping andgetting away with it? Where is this all go-ing to end?

I am a dog owner who used the now-prohibit-ed stretch of beach to let my four very activeJack Russells exercise without botheringother dog-walkers or nature lovers. Needlessto say this new “law” presents me, many oth-er animal lovers and nature lovers who wanta bit of peace and quiet, with a problem –where to go now? This little haven was oneof the reasons we moved to Melkbosstrandin the first place.

Using 1935 laws, 2008 amendments and1977 regulations as a reason for this beachclosure is laughable. Is Eskom telling us that

they have been contravening laws for thelast 77 years?

Currently the nature reserve adjacent toEdward Crescent is used by criminals to ac-cess homes in that road. I can only hope thatEskom will patrol their border and put up se-curity lights to stop trespassers of theburgla-ryvariety gaining easyaccess to private resi-dences instead of going after easy targets likemyself and my fellow tax-paying, law-abid-ing beachcombers.

In reaction to the letter “Hospital in PoorState” (TygerBurger 15 August) about Tyger-berg Hospital.

Our family’s experience almost two yearsago was disgusting – the entrance hall, theout-patient area, the linen used in the areafor out-patients I would not give my pets tosleep on.

There is no privacy (no curtains to be

drawn between patients for privacy), no pa-tient board on the bed and the hospital aswell as the department always have excuses.

There is not enough funds, we hear everyday, but fundsarebeingmismanaged.Healthand education in this country are goingdownhill at a speed!

I am in total agreement with Keith AlfredAdolph Blake’s article and suggestions inthe TygerBurger Brackenfell, dated 1 August2012.

Is it not time that all motorcar road userswake up, be totally alert in any and all trafficsituations?

By “going back to the basics” as requiredwhen one first undergoes a Traffic Regula-tions exam, eye test and driving/parkingtest, all persons have to be sober, sharp andalert, lest they fail to receive a valid driver’slicence!

What has happened to the dedication to get

what we need to be a legal motorist on theroad? Thanks to the Lord God there are stillwise motorists on the road, who have decentsense! Is it too much to demand that the otherthoughtless motorists “knuckle-down” to be-ing authentic licensed drivers also?

Slow down, use your indicators. Don’tslam on the brakes at the corner and onlythen indicate with one flash that you havealready turned.

Again is it not about time to drive respon-sibly?

The Cape’s biggest garden centre group is cele-brating 50 years of quality and service.

From humble beginnings the Stodels GardenCentres have grown into a much-loved brand inWestern Cape households.

The first Stodels Garden Centre was plantedfirmly in Kenilworth, thereafter Stodels Bel-lville was founded which is where the compa-ny’s head office is situated.

Milnerton then grew from this in 2005, withthe opening of a Stodels in Racecourse Roadwhich proved to be a huge success among thecommunity.

Under the reign of Nick Stodel, who took overthe business from his father Robert as manag-ing director, the company has blossomedthrough his ambition and leadership.

“We work hard to make sure that we give ourcustomers great service. We believe that a smileand a greeting isn’t hard for any staff memberto give, and allows our customers to have agreat experience when visiting. I think that ourmission statement says it all – ‘To delight ourcustomers by giving them affordable access togreat gardening ideas and service’,” says Nick.

Their goal of great service and well pricedquality products is what allows those who wantto garden to be able to afford it.

“There are certain rules thatyou have to adhere to, but youcan bend them a little.”

That’s the formula, accordingto songwriter, Gavin Edwards, for the perfect hit.

He should know. Gavin hasworked with some of the biggestnames in songwriting aroundthe world and is on the verge ofreleasing what he believes willbe his “smash hit”.

Although he got aboard themusical train at a young age, dabbling with many instru-ments and playing in the churchband, Gavin’s real journey start-ed when he met Brain McFad-den, of Westlife fame.

Brian saw his band, Allegoryperform at Sun City and spokeof taking them back to Ireland.“We thought it was a bit of ban-ter,”Gavin says, but amonth lat-er they were in Dublin.

After a name change, to Fran-klin, and a trip home to regroupas a stronger band, Gavin madeIreland his home for nine years.

He wanted the band to go in adifferent direction, so he startedresearching everything he couldabout writing hit songs.

He embarked on a “world

songwriting tour”, visiting NewYork, Nashville, London andAustralia, among other places,to work with names like BillyMann, who writes for Pink andPhil Thornalley, the writer ofNatalie Imbruglia’s “Torn”.

“Over there it’s so much likea business,” Gavin says, ex-plaining how songwriters writea song a day, in the search for ahit.

“It’s the same as making anomelette,” he says about writinga perfect song, explaining thatwhile the main ingredientschange, there can be variations.

Gavin will be teaching his for-mula at a workshop on Friday 31August, at Bloemendal.

Gavin says his workshop willalso cover issues related to “mu-sic as a business”, like publish-ing deals and the role of manag-ers.

His own band, Sunshine Stateare about to release their newsingle, “Beautiful Morning,” inAustralia.

Though they won’t be on stagefor a while, fans of When KarmaSleeps, can expect two new songssoon.

This is on top of the music videoin the pipeline and the new materi-al they plan to work with.

“We are noticing that our musicis developing its maturity,” saysfront-woman, Megan Dewhurst.

She says the band will spend thenext while working on new materi-al.

For those who are unacquaintedwith When Karma Sleeps and their

powerful live performances, theband have been playing with theircurrent line-up for about two years. That is: Greg Lundin and KB Mafo-jane on guitars, Gerard van Eedenon bass, Matthew Hacking ondrums and Megan on vocals.

When Karma Sleeps was bornwhen Greg, KB and Megan were inhigh school and in 2007 they won acompetition toplayOppikoppi festi-val. It was after that the band decid-ed to take things seriously.

Since then they have played theRock the River and Synergy festi-vals. They have toured nationallyand are planning to do so again atthe end of the year.

They have recorded two singles;“Alive” has already been released, while “Love is” is on its way.

They are also about to record two

new songs. Megan says it’s still un-clear if the recorded songs will beused for an EP or an album.

“We’re just taking it as it comes,”

she says.Megan describes When Karma

Sleeps’ music as melodic rock andsays while there aren’t many fe-male fronted rock bands, her vocalsadd diversity and a pop element totheir music.

“To me I think it’s an advantage,”she says. “It’s got a heavy element, but my vocals lend themselves to afully acoustic set,” Megan says ofthe band’s music, adding that thereare plans to test the waters over-seas: “We’ve heard our musicwould be accepted better there”.

When Karma Sleep’s music isavailable on Soundcloud and on Fa-cebook.
