Police believe most of the cases are intended break-ins which turn into house robberies when the vic- tims wake up and then confront the robbers. “We are working through all the relevant dockets to see whether we are dealing with opportunistic criminals or a more organised group of suspects,” Munro ex- plained. She says they hope to close the net around these suspects by establish- ing a pattern of some kind. “We have found similarities in some of the cases. The incidents usually happen between 00:00 and 05:00 at night. In some instances a firearm is used to threaten the in- habitants and other times a knife, screwdriver or physical force are used,” Munro said. She advised residents to not con- front intruders when they enter their yards. “We have had incidents where residents went outside to confront intruders and were then threatened and forced inside where they were robbed. People should rather con- tact the specific sector police number,” she said. In four of the most recent cases victims were threatened with a fire- arm. Munro warned that people should not think that something such as electric fencing alone will deter intruders and then leave their doors and windows open. “In one instance three men re- moved the concrete slabs from a vi- bacrete wall to crawl under the elec- tric fencing and gain access to the property,” Munro said. She added residents should con- tinue to be alert and lock all doors and windows at night. To inform local residents of the current crime situation in the area, the police will have a public meet- ing on Wednesday 23 May at 19:00 at the Sunningdale Multipurpose Sports Hall. “We hope to drum up support for a Sunningdale branch of the Table View Neighbourhood Watch. There has definitely been a decrease in crime in areas where the neigbour- hood watch is active,” she said. The contact numbers for the pa- trol vehicle in Sector 2 (Parklands and Sunningdale) are 082 469 1734 or 079 894 1451. The number for Ta- ble View police is 021 521 3300 and for Parklands police 021 521 3807. Home break-ins surge ) Police search for crime patterns While there might still be much speculation about who will be captain- ing the Springbok rugby team in their first test against England, there is no doubt as to who is in charge of this herd of springboks at the Atlantic Beach Golf Course. This buck was clearly the alpha male, snort- ing and head butting any of the other young bucks to show his domi- nance. Those travelling along the R27 can often see the small herd of some 20 buck grazing on the club’s driving range in the early morning. Themanner inwhich tworecent incidentsof water leaks were handled has some res-idents questioning the citys current re-newed clampdown on water wastage.

TygerBurger recently reported about thecitys commitment to strengthen the enforce-ment of its by-laws related towater, in accord-ance with the new fine structure.

An irate Melkbosstrand resident reporteda burst pipe on the corner of Commaillie Roadand 10th Avenue on Thursday 12 April.

The site was cordoned off between 02:00 and03:00 by workers from the citys water depart-ment.

This specific household was thus withoutwater which is acceptable, however, whatwas upsetting is the stream of water thatflowed out of a 100mm pipe until 09:12. Thatis six hours, he man said.

I wonder if the new water act allows for the

incompetent handling of, according to me, anemergency where millions of litres of waterruns to the sea? he asked.

Pierre Maritz, acting director of the cityswater and sanitation department says techni-cal problems prevented the leak from beingstopped timeously.

Maritz says a repair team responded to thecall, but experienced problems with faultyvalves which did not close.

The valves are closed to shut off the watersupply in order to allow repair work to be car-ried out on the affected section of pipeline.

The result was that they had to start closingoff the water supply to a bigger area, which iswhy it took longer than normal to shut off thewater supply, he explained.

Maritz confirmed that the faulty valves havebeen scheduled for repair.

I wish to reassure residents that the waterand sanitation department strives to repair allwater bursts and leaks as soon as is possible. At times there are, however, technical con-

straints, he said. Two eagle-eyed residents in Flamingo

Vlei were also wondering about a continu-ous stream of water that was flowing froma pipe in a residential complex in SouthRoad.

Robert Symonds from Table View saysthe relevant article (Citybeefsupwaterby-law clout, 18 April 2012) made him laugh. He also questioned the citys commitmentto water saving after a delayed response.

I reported a severe water leak in SouthRoad, Table View to the water departmentvia email on 16, 17 and 18 April. I only re-ceived an acknowledgement on 19 April. The water department only arrived on the24th, he says.

It turned out that the leak came not froma municipal pipe but from the complex 48on South itself.

You would think that someone residingin the complex would have the commonsense to report the leak to the body corpo-rate or property management company.Meanwhile many hundreds of kilolitres ofprecious water have literally gone down thedrain, he says.

Mayoral committee member for utilityservices Shehaam Sims says the water andsanitationdepartment investigated the leakas soon as it was reported.

They found that the leak was on privateproperty. They were unable to gain access in-itially and so revisited the site on Tuesday 24April.

The staff met with the complainant and itwas confirmed that the leak was not from thecitys infrastructure, but from private prop-erty. Upon further investigation, staff foundthat the water meter for the property wasshowing high usage. They managed to findthe number for the complexs managingagent and contacted him immediately. Whenthe agent arrived, he was able to open thecomplex gate with a remote, allowing citystaff to search the interior of the complex. They found the leaking pipe underground, onthe complexproperty.Theagent immediatelytook action to contact a private plumber,Sims explained.

Sims says they are always grateful whenresidents report faults.

The sooner they are reported, the soonerthey can be attended to.

Residents should please report faults to theCall Centre on 0860 103 089. Complainants willbe supplied with a reference number whichthey should retain for all future dealings onthe matter. Water-related faults can also bereported via SMS (max 160 characters) to31373 or via email to [email protected].

Homes and businesses will have to step upand make sure they comply with the legalrequirements for employing domesticworkers. If not, it could land them in hotwater.

Although these legal provisions are set outin the Basic Conditions of Employment andOccupational Health and Safety acts, manydomestic workers still do not enjoy the em-ployment rights guaranteed by these twoacts.

The other implication is that non-compli-ant employers are in fact breaking the lawand are subject to fines, prosecution, and inextreme cases, possible incarceration accord-ing to the department of labour.

Yendor Felgate, CEO of Emergence GrowthServices, a provider of human capital man-agement, states that non-compliance may becompletely unintentional, and that adoptionof compliance may be hindered due to massignorance.

Pieter Laubscher, deputy director for elec-trical engineering within the department oflabour states that the reasons for the slowrate of compliance of employers has not yetbeen fully determined, however steadyprogress is being made and inspectors are notexperiencing much resistance to the depart-ments labour inspection initiative that tar-gets both business, as well as private resi-dences.

Furthermore, according to David Honey-man, executive at Guardrisk Allied Productsand Services, a division of Alexander Forbes, domestic workers often do not enjoy insur-ance benefits that many businesses provideto their employees.

The most recent national census is expect-ed to declare a conservative figure of approxi-mately 900 000 domestic workers in South Af-rica, although this figure would be acceptedas being lower than the true amount.

It is also suggested that of this, up to 28 per-cent of domestic workers remain without thenecessary documentation or agreement of

formal employment with employers. To rectify this matter, the department of

labour has initiated ongoing inspections toensure compliance with the acts.

In February, the then minister of labourHerbert Mkhize stated: We have a moralduty to do something about non-compli-ance. We need our social partners to joinhands with us in the war against non-com-pliance. Why do we have to use the law tocajole citizens to do the right thing? Whydo we have to tighten inspectorate sectionsof labour legislation to achieve improvedcompliance? Why do we have to deploy anarmy of inspectors to police compliancewith what is considered to be humanrights?

Felgate believes that if most domesticworker employers knew more of the re-quirements and processes to gain compli-ance, that they would do the right thing andcomplete the necessary procedures.

Our research into why so many employ-ers fail to legalise their domestic service ar-rangements indicates that while most em-ployers are keen to do the right thing, fewareaware that that their two-day-a-weekdo-mestic worker qualifies as an employee.

Non-compliance is therefore, in the ma-jority of cases, not a result of malicious in-tent, but rather a result of simply not know-ing what needs to be done, or how to do it.

Sadly, this is probably a result of manyyears of unregulated domestic employ-ment, where domestic work was seen as aninformal career and therefore not subject toany employment legislation. While I dothink that it is generally known that domes-tic workers are entitled to employmentrights, our research suggests that theremay be confusion as to what these rightsare, he says.

Laubscher confirmed that most of the in-spections are, and will continue to be donein residential areas, and that inspectorswould not accept ignorance as an excusefrom employers who are found not to com-

ply. In instances of non-compliance, inspectorsissue the employers with Undertaking andCompliance orders.

Says Felgate: Through the Domestere prod-

uct, Emergence Growth Services is well posi-tioned to guide anyone employing a domesticworker.

Because, you come to me, with naught sa-ve love, sing Pieter le Roux (84).

Ek sien nog hul gesigte so voor my!

Ses maande n my vrou oorlede is, hetek aan Hermine se deur geklop. My water was afgesny daardie dag, so toevra ek vir Mevrou Pretorius vir so n bietjietee!

Musiek is wysie vir di egpaar se liefde

Foto: Andr Bakkes

A new short-term wildlife care facility inGrassy Park, was officially opened byMarjorie Letoaba of the National Lotter-ies Board, and Cape of Good Hope (CoGH)SPCA Wildlife Unit Ambassador and en-vironmental campaigner, Lewis Pughlast Wednesday.

This centre was purpose-built to enablethe CoGH SPCA to provide emergency treat-ment and short-term care to a wide range ofinjured, sick and errant wild animals.

According to CoGH SPCA CEO Allan Per-rins, the need for a specialist facility hasbeen felt since they first began respondingto wildlife emergencies in early 2000.

With several nature reserves, a nationalpark and long coastline within the greaterCape Town metropole, coupled with agrowth in urban sprawl, the incidence of hu-man/wildlife conflicts has risen each year,he says.

However until now our ability to provideoptimal care andtreatment to the myri-ad of mammals, birds, reptiles and fish res-cued each year, hasbeen limited by thelack of specialist facil-ities to properlyhouse and care forthem, he said

The National Lot-tery DistributionTrust Fund (NLDTF)awarded funding ofR3 993 115 to theCoGH SPCA for thedevelopment of CapeTowns first Short-Term Wildlife CareFacility in November2010 and constructionbegan in earnest inSeptember 2011.

In addition to thefunds received fromNLDTF the CoGH

SPCA invested a further R620 000 from re-serve funds to enhance the original specifi-cations, bringing the cost to R4 613 115.

Designed by 4th Dimension Studios andbuilt by R+N Master Builders in record time, the completed 456m facility is convenientlylocated alongside the Inspectorate offices atthe CoGH SPCA in Grassy Park

The facility has been designed and mas-terfully built to enable us to simultaneouslycare for different types of wild animals re-quiring short-term treatment and care be-fore being released back to the wild, orwhere appropriate transferred to a long-term rehabilitation centre, said Brett Glas-by, CoGH SPCA Wildlife Unit supervisor.

Often all that the displaced animal needsis somewhere safe, warm and quiet to recov-er before being released back to the wild. Forthose with injuries, such as burns orwounds, or those that are emaciated and de-hydrated, we now have the facilities to pro-vide specialist treatment and care, he says.

    LEON STEENKAMP

Although she is involved in the mostgruelling fight of her life, a local beautyqueen and motivational speaker is stillintent on making a difference in hercommunity.

Table View resident Sheryl Long is well-known for her achievements in the worldof beauty pageants and even more so for hercharity work.

Long was diagnosed with breast cancer in2004 after discovering a lump in her rightbreast. Despite the subsequent surgery andmany months of chemo and radiotherapy, she entered the Mrs South Africa competi-tion and won the title of Mrs Western Capein 2007.

Since then she has committed herself toa variety of charity work including the es-tablishment of the Race to Live organisa-tion. Race to Live consists of a small groupof volunteers who raises funds to help chil-dren with life-threatening diseases realisetheir dreams.

After winning her initial title Long hasalso won the Mrs Smile Western Cape andMrs Worldwide Queen of Hope in 2010 and2011 respectively.

In April last year Longs cancer returnedafter she broke her leg.

I have five permanent pins, a plate anda screw in my leg. Because of the massivetrauma, the cancer cells went haywire andformed a lump in my left breast, Long says.

The cancer was diagnosed as a new typeof carcinoma. She underwent a lumpecto-my (breast conserving surgery) and doctorsalso advised chemotherapy.

I refused it andwentmyownroute spir-itual healing, meditation and a special di-et.

In December the lump was back and the

cancer had started spreading to her lymphglands.

This time she opted for the chemo afterdoctors warned that the cancer couldspread to her organs within four weeks.

Her treatment needed to be postponed bytwo weeks however after Long was rushedto hospital with a burst appendix.

She started treatment early Februarywith a four-hour session every three weeks.Long is treated with the strongest dosage ofcyclophosphamide or doxorubicin onceevery three weeks.

The red cocktail has many negativeside effects like complete hair loss, nauseaand vomiting, diarrhoea, heart palpita-tions, dry skin, and watery, weakened eyes.

My veins are like rope and are painful,my bone marrow is suffering. My fingersand toes are numb, I have cramps all over.I had to extract a back tooth as a result asit was affecting my root canal. I have no ap-petite and no taste on my tongue.

So toxic is this cocktail that when mixingit, the nurses and pharmacists wear specialgloves as it will burn their skin on contact.

After chemo Long needs at least a weekto recover.

Blood tests are taken a day before mynext chemo, if my white blood cells are nothigh enough I need to inject myself daily forat least three days with an injection into mystomach.

This injection stimulates the growth ofwhite blood cells and allows Long to contin-ue with her chemotherapy the followingweek. This month she will switch to a light-er dosage.

My bone marrow is suffering from thehigh doses. This will be the final leg of mytreatment and thereafter I will still need tobe scheduled for a double mastectomy andbreast reconstruction, Long says.

She has however continued working in-

cludingher charityworkandassistingHuisZonnekus with various functions. She hasalso been doing community work in Atlan-tis and the Malachi safe house in Richwood.

The chemo has been a setback, but hasnot stopped me from continuing my pur-pose making a difference in my communi-ty. It has in fact led me to people whom Ihave been able to support going through thesame disease.

Despite having chemo only two days be-fore, Long competed in the Mzantsi AfricaMrs Western Cape pageant where she wonthe title.

Long has been inundated by messages.I am so pleased to assist younger girls

to follow in my footsteps. I have been askedto do various talks on being a Woman ofStrength andmotivational talksby just tell-ing my story thus far. I am so positive andhave surrendered my life to God complete-ly. I walk with the Word of God in my heartand know that I will overcome all of this.Any symptom I receive, I just speak outscriptures aloud and rebuke Satan awayfrom my body. I am strong and I know thatGod still has so much more for me to do. Iknow that my life will be eternal with Himin heaven, but as long as I am here on earth,in this life, I will make the most of my heav-en on earth, Long says.

Her courageous story will also shortlyfeature in a new magazine compiled byNicole Theunissen also a current breastcancer fighter. My choices will be aboutbreast cancer awareness. The magazinewill be distributed freely nationwide andwill be available from September in clinics, oncology rooms and doctors rooms.

I will be posing with my bald head on thecover. This is me, and people need to acceptthat I am still the same person inside al-though cancer has stolen my identity. It isonly temporary.

    Beauty queen battles cancer

Sheryl Long recently won the Mzantsi Africa MrsWestern Cape title despite currently undergoing intensive chemotheraphy. Justin Hoffman of Bloubergwon the Mr Western Cape title.

The Sanccob bird rehabilitation centre inTable View was host to a very specialguest recently.

On 6 April a black-browed albatross be-came the latest addition the the centre.

The adult albatross landed ona fishing boat on its way to CapeTown and was fed fish by thecrew for a few days before dock-ing at the harbour.

The ships crew contactedSanccob and a volunteer re-sponder was sent to fetch the sea-bird which can easily live formore than 70 years in the wild.

Although very weak and un-derweight, Sanccob found no in-juries or poisoning after examin-ing the bird.

Nursing the gracious seabirdback to health, the Sanccob reha-bilitation team took extra care infeeding and hydrating the bird, and making sure it got sufficienttime in their local pool to water-proof its feathers. Over thecourse of two weeks, the birdsweight, hydration and water-proofing steadily improved withits blood tests coming back satis-factory.

On Friday 20 April the alba-tross was ready to be releasedback into the wild, but only in avery special way.

Courtesy of the WaterfrontBoat Company, which regularlydoes Sanccobs seabird releases,a special high-speed jet boat wassent to Cape Town Harbour topersonally chauffeur the alba-tross to Robben Islands westside for release. Once back in itsnatural habitat, the albatrosswas quick to broaden its large

wingspan and scoop the first gust of windback home.. Albatrosses are found on 12 islands

throughout the southern oceans and listedon the International Union for Conservationof Natures (IUCN) red list as endangered.

Despite an earthy taste and odour experi-enced in drinking water in several partsof the city over the past weeks, the cityassures residents that the water is abso-lutely safe to drink.

Peter Flower, manager: Bulk Water, Wa-ter and Sanitation Department, said thetaste and odour are caused by geosmin, originating from several of the major damssupplying the city. The presence of geos-min was noted earlier in the year, and hasrecently reoccurred, Flower said.

Treatment with activated carbon has beenreintroduced and the water is perfectly fitfor human consumption. Continuous wa-ter quality monitoring by the citys SouthAfrican National Accreditation System(SANAS) accredited laboratory has revealedelevated geosmin concentrations, greaterthan 10 nanograms per litre (ng/l), saidFlower.

He said in general, the human perceptionthreshold is about 15 and 20 ng/l for geosminodour and taste respectively. People witha heightened sense of smell and taste would

be the first to notice the presence of geosminin their water supply. These are extremelylow concentrations and it should be notedthat a nanogram is a billionth of a gram,he said.

The taste and smell of the water is causedby geosmin and MIB (2-Methyl-iso-Borneol),naturally occurring compounds found insurface waters (rivers and dams) as organicmolecules produced by blue-green algae.

Bright sun, warm temperatures and nutri-ents result in ideal growing conditions forthe algae, however neither of these com-pounds is toxic nor harmful.

It has an earthy or musty smell, a smellthe human nose is extremely sensitive to.Heating the water increases the volatility ofthese compounds, which explains why thesmell is more easily detected when you arein the shower or making hot beverages.

The city is well-equipped to deal with theproblem and has achieved a score within thetop two positions since inception of the BlueDrop drinking water quality system threeyears ago that assesses all SAs water au-thorities annually.

    ANDR BAKKES

The firefighter is breathing quickly andsweating profusely.

He just dragged two lengths of hose simulta-neously for 90metreswhile fully clothed inhisfirefighting gear. This is quite a feat sincethese hoses weigh 90 kilograms each.

The man is racing against the clock to com-plete the obstacle course at Goodwood FireStation.

He is competing against approximately 100firefighters from across South Africa in theToughest Firefighter Alive competition, which was held on Saturday.

He adjusts his breathing apparatus set andcontinues along the obstacle course throughtunnels. First he pulls a heavy human dum-my, then two drums of foam weighing 25 kilo-grams each, then he climbs a three metre walland jumps off on the other side.

With people urging him on, he runs to thetower and carries two 20 kilogram drums upto the third floor and then he pulls two lengthsof hose weighing 160 kilograms up the tower.

Finally, the man runs up a 23 floor fire es-cape with his full firefighting gear and breath-ing apparatus set. The contestant who suc-cessfully completes all four stages in theshortest period of time will be declared thewinner.

Almost 100 other firefighters completed thecourse and some of them were women!

Theo Layne, media spokesperson for Fireand Rescue Services, says some of the womenare so fit that there isnt a big difference be-tween the completion time of the sexes.

This competition is mainly strength andstamina orientated, he confirms.

As part of the firefighters daily routine, they are required to spend a certain amountof time in the gym daily. In fact, every fire sta-tion has a gym. Each firefighter will have anannual evaluation, and if they dont pass thenthey will have six months to get up to stand-ard.

Layne says that this event is the second ofits kind for Goodwood Fire Station, but thatits popularity is growing fast.

Last year we had 60 entrants and we hopewe have even more next year! he exclaims.

They opened the competition to the rest ofSouth Africa this year, so the number of con-testants nearly doubled.

There were also about 200 members of thepublic cheering on the firefighters, so Good-

wood Fire Station was buzzing with excite-ment from early on Saturday till late in theafternoon.

Next year we want a bigger venue, con-cludes Layne with a smile.

Oneof the contestants, LesleyColtman fromPort Elizabeth, had to face adversity beforethe event even started, because his gear wasstolen in Pinelands the evening before.

Says Coltman: We came through yesterday(Friday) and then someone stole all the equip-ment from the car. Theres been a lot of resist-ance for me to compete here today, but I be-lieve the breakthrough at the end will beworth it! If you cant kill me, youre only goingto make me stronger!

Its hard to believe that these firefighterscan actually become any stronger than theyalready are.

The eventual winner was Rudi van der Bergfrom Wynberg.

One of Bloubergstrands top life-guards is making the world a saferplace for children living along theWest Coast.

Derrick Frazer from Big Bay Events, aprofessional water safety service organi-sation, has joined forces with ShelleyPoint Hotel, Spa & Country Club in StHelena Bay to provide monthly swim-ming training and water safety lessons tothe children who form part of the hotelscommunity upliftment programme.

Ten children from the two local prima-ry schools, EJ Malgarte and SteenbergsCove, were selected by their teachers tobe part of the Dale Buddies programme.

Twice a month these children are givenswimming and water safety lessons in thehotels pool by professional lifesaversFrazer and Sarah Sandmann.

The children are aged between six andeight years. Their commitment to ourone-year programme will see them devel-op into competent swimmerswithagreat-er understanding of water safety, whichis of great relevance to a seaside commu-nity, says Frazer.

He adds that lifeguarding and watersafety should be more about preventinga possible drowning than recovering a pa-tient from drowning or near drowning.Frazers organisation is thus committedto teaching the children how to swim aswell as basic water safety.

Shelley Point is located in an areawhere a large percentage of the popula-tion is dependent on the sea and fishingfor a living. A significant number of thesefishermen cannot swim and are at a huge

risk daily. We feel that we can make a difference

with these youngsters by teaching themto swim so that they are more secureshould they follow the obvious careerpath for that area, Frazer adds.

Speedo has also teamed up with the ini-tiative, sponsoring towels, swimmingcaps and kick boards. Stuart Hopwood, brand president of Speedo, regularly at-tends the sessions and his hands-on ap-proach sees him spending time in the wa-ter with the children.

The Dale Buddies initiative waslaunched in 2010 by the investors of thehotel and spa The Dale Capital Group.

The community partnering pro-gramme allows the children at the localschools to use Shelley Points sporting fa-cilities its golf course, tennis courts, bowling greens and swimming pool fortraining under top coaches.

Thus far the initiative has proved huge-ly beneficial for the local community whoare often totally dependent on the fluctu-ating fishing industry.

Dale Capitals wish and intention, is toplay a big role in improving the lives ofthe disadvantaged communities in theShelley Point, St Helena and related are-as, says chairman of the group NormanNoland.

Big Bay Events is owned, managed andstaffed 100 percent by current lifeguardswho are committed to voluntary servicesfor the Big Bay Surf Lifesaving Club.Their passion and dedication to volun-tary services has been instrumental inthe organisation becoming the numberone safety company in Cape Town.
