What is heat exchanger?
• A heat exchanger is a device built for efficient heat transfer from one medium to another.
• the mediums are separated by a solid wall so that they never mix, or the media are in direct contact

Shell and tube heat exchanger
![Page 7: Type of Heat Exchangers By Cao Yu, Marcus, Ray Yan](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032701/56649ca25503460f949611cf/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Shell and tube heat exchanger• It is the most common type of heat
exchanger in oil refineries and other large chemical processes,
• is suited for higher-pressure applications.
• consists of a shell with a bundle of tubes inside it.
![Page 8: Type of Heat Exchangers By Cao Yu, Marcus, Ray Yan](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032701/56649ca25503460f949611cf/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Shell and tube heat exchanger• One fluid runs through the tubes,
and another fluid flows over the tubes to transfer heat between the two fluids.
• The set of tubes is called a tube bundle, and may be composed by several types of tubes: plain, longitudinally finned, etc.
• For more details, please kindly refer to group 2 presentation. :D

Plate heat exchanger
![Page 10: Type of Heat Exchangers By Cao Yu, Marcus, Ray Yan](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032701/56649ca25503460f949611cf/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
![Page 11: Type of Heat Exchangers By Cao Yu, Marcus, Ray Yan](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032701/56649ca25503460f949611cf/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Plate heat exchanger
• uses metal plates to transfer heat between two fluids.
• major advantage is that fluids are exposed to a much larger surface area because the fluids spread out over the plates.
• need well-sealed gaskets to prevent the fluids from escaping
![Page 12: Type of Heat Exchangers By Cao Yu, Marcus, Ray Yan](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032701/56649ca25503460f949611cf/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Regenerative heat exchanger• more commonly known as
regenerator
![Page 13: Type of Heat Exchangers By Cao Yu, Marcus, Ray Yan](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032701/56649ca25503460f949611cf/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Regenerative heat exchanger• the flow through the heat
exchanger is cyclical and periodically changes direction.
• a regenerator mixes the two fluid flows.
• The temperature profile remains at a nearly constant temperature, and this includes the fluid entering and exiting each end.
![Page 14: Type of Heat Exchangers By Cao Yu, Marcus, Ray Yan](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032701/56649ca25503460f949611cf/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Adiabatic wheel heat exchanger
![Page 15: Type of Heat Exchangers By Cao Yu, Marcus, Ray Yan](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032701/56649ca25503460f949611cf/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Adiabatic wheel heat exchanger• uses an intermediate
fluid or solid store to hold heat, which is then moved to the other side of the heat exchanger to be released.
• it is acceptable for a small amount of mixing to occur between the two streams
![Page 16: Type of Heat Exchangers By Cao Yu, Marcus, Ray Yan](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032701/56649ca25503460f949611cf/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Plate Fin heat exchanger

Plate Fin heat exchanger
• This type of heat exchanger uses "sandwiched" passages containing fins to increase the effectivity of the unit.
• The designs include crossflow and counterflow coupled with various fin configurations such as straight fins, offset fins and wavy fins.

Fluid heat exchangers
![Page 20: Type of Heat Exchangers By Cao Yu, Marcus, Ray Yan](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032701/56649ca25503460f949611cf/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Fluid heat exchangers
![Page 21: Type of Heat Exchangers By Cao Yu, Marcus, Ray Yan](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032701/56649ca25503460f949611cf/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Fluid heat exchangers
• This is a heat exchanger with a gas passing upwards through a shower of fluid, and the fluid is then taken elsewhere before being cooled.
• This is commonly used for cooling gases whilst also removing certain impurities, thus solving two problems at once.
![Page 22: Type of Heat Exchangers By Cao Yu, Marcus, Ray Yan](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032701/56649ca25503460f949611cf/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Waste Heat Recovery Units
![Page 23: Type of Heat Exchangers By Cao Yu, Marcus, Ray Yan](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032701/56649ca25503460f949611cf/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Waste Heat Recovery Units• recovers heat from a hot gas
stream while transferring it to a working medium, typically water or oils.
• The hot gas stream can be the exhaust gas from a gas turbine or a diesel engine or a waste gas from industry or refinery.
![Page 24: Type of Heat Exchangers By Cao Yu, Marcus, Ray Yan](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032701/56649ca25503460f949611cf/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Dynamic scraped surface heat exchanger• can be used either to heat a liquid
to evaporate (or boil) it or used as condensers to cool a vapor and condense it to a liquid
![Page 25: Type of Heat Exchangers By Cao Yu, Marcus, Ray Yan](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032701/56649ca25503460f949611cf/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)

Direct Contact Heat Exchangers
![Page 27: Type of Heat Exchangers By Cao Yu, Marcus, Ray Yan](https://reader030.vdocument.in/reader030/viewer/2022032701/56649ca25503460f949611cf/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Direct Contact Heat Exchangers• Direct contact heat exchangers
involve heat transfer between hot and cold streams of two phases in the absence of a separating wall.
• can be classified as:– Gas – liquid– Immiscible liquid –liquid– Solid-liquid or solid- gas
