Caledonian Park was once the site of the Metropolitan Cattle Market, opened by Prince Albert in 1855.

Once surrounded by railings, topped with the cast iron heads of livestock, the Metropolitan Cattle Market could trade more than 15,000 animals in a single day. The clock in the imposing tower is still wound each week, and from the upper balcony it’s possible to enjoy views of the City, Canary Wharf, St Paul’s Cathedral, Stratford and Alexandra Palace. Your new home at Market Gardens is situated right next to this special site, making it a fascinating talking point – as well as giving you attractive green space on your doorstep.

Living on ‘The Cally’ brings you up close to some of London’s richest history

Caledonian Road. The Cally. Just to say its name is to conjure up the fascinating past of one of the capital’s most historic districts.

From the stately splendour of the British Museum to the hushed precincts of the British Library, iconic reminders of London’s history are all around you. Just a short walk can take you to George Gilbert Scott’s magnificent Victorian St Pancras Hotel, Thomas Coram’s 18th century Foundling Hospital, or the Regent’s Canal and Camden Lock. At Market Gardens, the past is never far away - and you’re sure to see and learn something new every day.

From quirky shops and cosy cafés, right through to stylish bars and a whole world of restaurants, there’s lots to discover in your neighbourhood.

On ‘The Cally’ itself, you’ll find Housmans, which has specialised in radical books and magazines since 1945. Then there’s Piebury Corner, a casual bar and restaurant offering handmade pies, scotch eggs, craft beers and cocktails. For a buzzing café-bar serving authentic Ethiopian and Eritrean cuisine, look no further than Merkato – or sample one of its fabulous takeaways in the comfort of your new home.

If you venture a little further afield, you can quickly reach Camden and explore its famous vintage clothing shops or find a bargain among the numerous shops and stalls at Camden Lock Market. Clerkenwell is also nearby, where you can enjoy world-class coffee at Briki, stock up on gourmet groceries at the Quality Chop House Shop or pick up unusual flowers and plants at Botanique Workshop.

If pubs are your thing, you’ll be particularly spoilt for choice. Of particular note are The Hemingford Arms in Barnsbury, which is packed with personality and has a top-notch Thai menu, and The Depot in Carpenters Mews – a gem of bar, where you can relax over a board game or enjoy live music and DJs at the weekends.

You might be in the heart of the city, but there’s no shortage of opportunities for working out and keeping fit. Studio One Islington is on ‘The Cally’ itself, offering everything from yoga and pilates to barre and boxing. The neighbouring Cally Pool & Gym boasts two pools, a gym and sauna suite, while Kings Cross Studios has London’s only fully equipped Gyrotonic studio.

If you love exercising in the open air, you’ve plenty of options too. Barnard Park has a great all-weather football pitch and Caledonian Park is ideal for jogging, ball games and other sports. If you head further west, you can enjoy the 410 acres of Regent’s Park, where you can enjoy everything from cycling, tennis and hockey to rugby, ultimate frisbee and even Australian rules football.

When you live a stone’s throw from Islington, Camden and King’s Cross, you’re a resident of a district that has art in its DNA. ‘The Cally’ itself is renowned for its street art, while the Estorick Collection of Modern Art in Canonbury Square is the place to go if you want to be inspired by Futurism. The King’s Cross area in particular offers a plethora of galleries, including the House of Illustration, the prestigious Gagosian Gallery and the Lethaby Gallery – which showcases the talent work of the staff, students and alumni of Central St Martins, the famous college of the University of the Arts London. Even walking the streets is an inspiration - The King’s Cross Project is an ongoing scheme which commissions art for display across the 67-acre neighbourhood. In Battle Bridge place, you’ll also find the giant ‘birdcage’, a 9m high installation that comes alive at night in a brilliant array of neon colours.

Local venues have launched thousands of musical careers – and the vibe is as strong as ever

If you love live music, then take your pick of some of London’s most famous music venues. Nearby Camden is renowned as a Mecca for music lovers, and deservedly so. The Electric Ballroom has attracted top talent since 1938 and has hosted everyone from Madness and The Clash to Blur and The Smiths. The Camden Assembly (formerly The Barfly) is a popular indie haunt that hosts popular and budding talent, while the Roundhouse is the place to go to spot the latest up-and-coming acts. Koko, a favourite with artists including Coldplay and Madonna, is also set to reopen in 2020 after a major refurbishment.

Over in Islington, you’ve got just as much to choose from. Located on Upper Street in Angel, you'll find both The O2 Academy which is a hothouse for creative new musicians, and the Union Chapel which is renowned for hosting musicians from almost every genre – Amy Winehouse, Beck and Philip Glass included. It’s also a great venue for film screenings, comedy and even organ recitals, so be sure to check it out!

ICONICALLY N7

To live in London is to live in one of the world’s greatest cities, a crucible of world history and a beacon for culture

London is the most visited city in Europe, and the second most visited in the world. And little wonder. As the focal point of a former Empire that spanned the globe, and as the capital of the world’s first industrial nature, the city even now has huge reach and influence.

The capital’s wealth and importance has left its mark and continues to do so today. From the glories of Christopher Wren’s St Paul’s Cathedral and Pugin’s Houses of Parliament to the famous waxworks of Madame Tussauds and the street entertainers at Covent Garden, the city surrounds you with cultural treasures almost everywhere you go – giving you the pick of its world-class galleries, museums, theatres, libraries, concert halls and more.

There are also lots of fascinating and influential districts near ‘The Cally’ itself, not least Angel – home to the bustling and fashionable Upper Street and Essex Road – and nearby Clerkenwell. Over in Shoreditch, among the popular bars and restaurants, you’ll find ‘Tech City’, a cluster of high-tech companies that range from quirky start-ups to big players such as Microsoft, Google and Facebook.

With a rich past, London also has an eye on the future. The bustling, modern financial district at Canary Wharf, the Olympic-inspired regeneration at Stratford, plus iconic new buildings like the ‘Gherkin’ and ‘The Shard’ tell a story of a capital with a uniquely confident and bright outlook – and one in which it is a joy to live.
