Supporting the Canner Educational Fund- how BHS Alumni can help:

There is a group of community members hard at work promoting the Canner Educational Funds. The Canner Educational Funds were established in 2010 to enhance the qua l i t y o f t he educa t iona l experience provided to the students of the Upper Adams School District in ways not covered by the District’s annual budget. The Canner Educational Funds support our district through annual gifts, commemorative and memorial gifts and scholarship gifts to support our students. Last year, the C a n n e r E d u c a t i o n a l F u n d s distributed grants totaling $6,000 to teachers within the Upper Adams School District. The money allotments varied in size to help finance projects such as the Watershed Education Program, Technology Student Association, and many other teacher-initiated projects for students. !Currently the Canner Educational Funds are also in the process of establishing a Dollars for Scholars Fund, which will support our students. We are hoping to raise funds and create awareness for these funds, which will benefit students at Upper Adams. The success of this Fund depends on your generosity and support. If you would like to be listed as a member of the BHS Alumni, please e m a i l D i a n e M y e r s at [email protected]. Any s u p p o r t w o u l d b e g r e a t l y appreciated. !If you have any questions about the Canner Educational Fund, please contact Mike Lawrence at 7 1 7 - 6 7 7 - 7 1 9 1 o r [email protected] !

The Cultural Arts festival days hosted by the Fine Arts team in the District took place at each elementary building:

Biglerville - February 17-18

Arendtsville - February 19

Bendersville - February 20

Cultural Arts Days are an integral part of the year-long studies in the Fine Arts curriculum. Cultural themes are studied in a six year rotation; this year's theme is Eastern European countries.

Various activities highlight the half day event for all elementary students. Students moved from station to station and enjoyed such activities as art projects, music and dance, games, food sampling and storytelling.

The students also learned from guest artists who joined the Fine Arts Team for the event. Ms. Ann Griffith was our storyteller, and Mr. Mark Wilson demonstrated clogging and taught basic steps to the children. (The clogging station was a follow-up to the fall artist-in-residency with Mr. Tom Jolin.) The Fine Arts Team thanks these retired teachers for coming in to help: Barb Rouzer, Jenni Lobaugh, Jane Little and Ann Ratay.

The Fine Arts team is able to host this yearly event through grants written by the Fine Arts team.

More than ever, employers are looking to hire people with experience in their fields and who have the ability to think critically and solve problems. !Whether students are planning to enter the job market full time after graduating from high school or are looking to continue with their education, a CPAVTS education is one of the best ways to help them achieve their goals. !Students can choose instruction in a wide range of in-demand professions, such as nursing assisting, auto tech, health career technician, masonry, auto collision, carpentry, child care, culinary arts, dental assisting, electronics technology, welding, graphic communications, advertising, art and design. !Cumberland Perry students also can earn college credits, saving them time and money and putting them a step ahead of many of their peers. Industry certifications are available to all students as well, helping them stand apart in the eyes of employers and giving them the ability to land a higher-paying job while they pursue advanced studies. !Many seniors take part in the Cooperative Education program, where Cumberland Perry works with area companies to give students the chance to gain critical real-world experience in their chosen field and earn money at the same time. !A U.S. Department of Education study found that students who participate in technical programs like those at CPAVTS have increased academic achievement and are better prepared for college and careers. Additionally, a recent Georgetown University study revealed that nearly 30 percent of those with associate degrees make more than those with bachelor's degrees — underscoring the value of CPAVTS's college credits, which are directly transferable to Harrisburg Area Community College and the Pennsylvania College of Technology. !CPAVTS students receive course credits and graduate from their sending high schools while earning a Certificate of Award for completing the training in their program area. Students also take their core courses at their home high schools. !You are welcome to call with questions, tour the school and explore the programs. More information is also available on our website, www.cpavts.org. !Once you have a chance to see what is offered, you'll see why Cumberland Perry AVTS stands for Opportunities Unlimited.

Contest Winnner !Gabriella   Corson,   a   5th   grader   at   Arendtsville

Elementary,   was   perusing   the   Rush   Revere   web   site   about   a  favorite  book  series  when  she  came  across  a  contest.  She  chose  to   create   a   video   book   report   about   Freedom,   her   favorite  character   from   the   series,   and   explain   why   she   likes   her.   She  wrote   a   poem,   then   dressed   as   Freedom,   and   had   her   mom  record   her   reciting   the   poem.   Her   submission   won   Eirst   place!  Gabriella  stated,  “I  won  a  Ted  Tea  Bear,  a  $50.00  Visa  gift  card,  a  certiEicate   signed   by   the   author   and   an   iMac   computer.”  Congratulations,   Gabriella!   If   you   would   like   to   see   Gabriella’s  recitation,  you  can  go  to  facebook.com/rushrevere.  You  will  need  to  scroll  down  to  her  post  from  Dec.  19,  2014  to  see  the  video.

Freedom

By  Gabriella  Corson

!Freedom  talks  to  animals.  She  clearly  reads  their  minds

She  always  has  a  smile  and  remembers  to  be  kind.

Soon  she  realizes  Liberty’s  secret  of  disappearing  and  then,

Time  travels  to  the  past  and  finds  a  special  friend.

She  meets  a  man  named  Squanto  who  taught  her  one  cool  thing,  what  happens  when  you  mix  fish  with  soil;  the  blessing  they  will  bring.

When  she  comes  back  to  her  class  she  knows  where  her  family’s  from.  But  she’ll  always  be  with  Rush  Revere  which  means  there’s  more  adventure  to  come.

Freedom  learns  a  lot  from  her  new  friend  Mr.  Revere.  She  will  never  be  forgoJen  or  at  least  that’s  what  I  hear.

I  like  her  spirit.  I  like  her  ways  so  this  is  why  I’ve  come  to  say.

Thank  you  Rush  for  all  the  fun  you’ve  shared  because  of  you  I  know;  this  is  not  the  end  of  Freedom.  I’m  excited  to  watch  her  grow.

My  hope  lies  on  Freedom  and  when  I  have  doubt  all  I  do  is  remember  what  Freedom’s  all  about.

Mrs. Yargar-Reed, Physical Education Teacher was the Coordinator for the Jump event

February was Jump rope for heart month at Biglerville Elementary. The event teaches participants about the benefits of regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle, while promoting teamwork and building school spirit. We are really excited about this year’s Jump event and the experience that it offered our students. Students who participated in the Jump event during their Physical Education class, raised $5,210.10 which will benefit the American Heart Association.

Students receive thank you gifts depending upon the amount of donations they collect. Utz from Hanover and Knouse foods graciously donated (pretzels and apple juice) to our event. We thank both companies for their support and contribution. Thank you for being part of this lifesaving and educational event.

A thank you to the parents for supporting our Biglerville Bobcats as they raised money to fight heart disease and stroke. The physical education department will also benefit by receiving vouchers to purchase equipment for use in PE class. I am very pleased we had 120 student “heart heroes” JUMP in our event!
