Executive Summary

In 2019, nine states passed severely restrictive anti-abortion laws, including Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Missouri.

In the wake of this wave of oppressive legislation, corporate leaders are using their platforms to fight back. In Georgia, top industry leaders said they are considering moving their operations elsewhere if the state begins to enforce its ban, and in early June, a coalition of nearly 200 businesses nationwide announced their opposition to the laws, deeming them “bad for business.”

But when it comes to gender equality and health care access, many leading corporations are talking the talk, but not walking the walk.

Fifteen big-name companies — AT&T, Boeing, Coca-Cola, Comcast, Delta Air Lines, General Motors, Google, Johnson & Johnson, Lyft, Mastercard, Microsoft, PepsiCo, Pfizer, Uber and Walmart — boast their commitment to gender equality. But each of these companies contributed significant sums of money to support lawmakers (or the committees backing them) who sponsored oppressive anti-abortion legislation.

The following report demonstrates the monetary contributions of 66 corporations, including these fifteen companies, to lawmakers who are hostile to reproductive health care access. The contributions went to lawmakers directly in AL, GA, LA and MO and through the Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC), which works to elect Republican state legislators, in the past two years.

Some top findings in the report, which tracks contributions made since 2017, include:

• AT&T: While AT&T leadership claims to be proud of the company’s recognized diversityinclusion efforts, its various PACs contributed nearly $108,000 to support politicians andcommittees who pushed for these state abortion bans.

• Boeing: Boeing touts its fiscal contributions to “community initiatives” that help inspireyoung women, yet the company contributed at least $107,500 to politicians instrumentalin passing state-level abortion bans.

• Coca-Cola: Coca-Cola promised to “promote inclusion, celebrate diversity andchampion equality.” But the corporation contributed tens of thousands of dollars tosupport politicians and committees furthering anti-abortion legislation across the U.S.

• Delta Airlines: Delta says that claims that “promoting diversity and intersectionalempowerment of women is key to Delta’s success” — yet Delta has contributed at least$44,000 to politicians and committees who passed and supported restrictive state-levelabortion bans.

• Google: Despite Google’s stated commitment towards “advocating for gender equity,”the company contributed at least $51,000 to support officials and committees whosupported and pushed restrictive state-level abortion bans.

The total contributions of these 66 companies to support politicians that supported abortion bans is nearly $3 million.

At a time when people have lost faith in government institutions, they are expecting more and more out of the companies they support with their hard-earned dollars. Studies show that consumers — and employees — expect corporate CEOs to “take the lead on change.” Americans choose to support companies that take a stand on the issues that matter to them.

The American people are not aligned with the corporations on this issue. Polling shows that Americans overwhelmingly oppose these recent abortion restrictions, as they demonstrate extreme government overreach and take away women’s rights.

It’s time for these leading companies to put their money where their mouth is and defund the bans.

Netflix, Disney, AT&T’s WarnerMedia And Comcast’s NBCUniversal Have Suggested Pulling Their Work From Georgia Following The State’s Restrictive Abortion Ban

Netflix, Disney And WarnerMedia Were The First Major Studios To Suggest Pulling Their Work From Georgia Following The State’s Restrictive Abortion Ban. “This week, three entertainment giants — Netflix, Disney and WarnerMedia — became the first major studios to suggest the new law in Georgia could make them rethink their work in the state. Companies that Contributed to lawmakers who pushed for the new legislation also have come under fire from the left following an analysis of political contributions to officials who have enacted or advocated for more restrictive laws.” [Washington Post, 5/31/19]

NBCUniversal, CBS/Showtime And AMC Networks Stated That They May Pull Productions From Georgia And Other States If Restrictive New Abortion Laws Take Effect. “NBCUniversal, CBS/Showtime and AMC Networks joined other entertainment companies on Thursday in saying they may pull productions from Georgia and other states if restrictive new abortion laws take effect. ‘If any of these laws are upheld, it would strongly impact our decision-making on where we produce our content in the future,’ NBCU said in a statement. CBS and Showtime said states that ban abortion after six or eight weeks ‘may not be viable locations for our future production.’ Netflix, Disney and WarnerMedia had issued similar statements earlier. Georgia is a hub for television and film and could lose billions in an industry-wide boycott. But the companies are waiting for the outcome of legal challenges to the new laws before taking any action.” [The Daily Beast, 5/30/19]

As is always the case, we will work closely with our production partners and talent to determine how and where to shoot any given project,’ the company said in a statement, which also noted that ‘we do respect due process.’” [HuffPost 5/30/19]

Disney Says It May No Longer Film In Georgia Over The State’s Abortion Ban, Despite Contributing To Supporters Of The Ban

Disney’s CEO Suggested That It May No Longer Film In Georgia Because Of Its Extreme Anti-Abortion Law…

Disney’s CEO Suggested That The Company Would Not Film In Georgia If The State’s New Abortion Law Takes Effect… “Walt Disney Co Chief Executive Bob Iger told Reuters on Wednesday it would be ‘very difficult’ for the media company to keep filming in Georgia if a new abortion law takes effect because many people will not want to work in the U.S. state. … Disney has filmed blockbuster movies in Georgia such as “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Endgame,” and it would be a blow to the state’s efforts to create production jobs if the entertainment giant stopped filming there. … Asked if Disney would keep filming in Georgia, Iger said it would be ‘very difficult to do so’ if the abortion law is implemented. ‘I rather doubt we will,’ Iger said in an interview ahead of the dedication for a new ‘Star Wars’ section at Disneyland. ‘I think many people who work for us will not want to work there, and we will have to heed their wishes in that regard. Right now we are watching it very carefully.’” [Reuters, 5/29/19]
