u16 Champions of Armagh The English poet, Rudyard Kipling once described what it takes to be a man in the lines “If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster and treat those two impostors just the same”. This week, our club had opportunity to sample both sides of this with magnificent triumphs for our senior, u16 and u10 footballers while disappointments, if not disasters, for our u16 hurlers and u14 footballers.
Pride of place goes to our u16 footballers who were crowned county champions after a heart stopping final against Crossmaglen. Some matches are won with tremendous displays of free flowing football and some are won with sheer tenacity and grit. This match took both. Our lads would have been slight favourites going into the final and everything looked set for a comfortable evening when they turned on the style in the first half to lead by six points at the break. The key score of the first half came when Declan Donaghy got his fist to a high dropping ball to send it flying to the net. To their credit, Crossmaglen fought like terriers in the second half and we suddenly found it impossible to clear our defensive lines. To make matters worse, two yellow cards saw our best player on the night, Caolan McConville being removed from the action with 15 minutes left. The last fifteen minutes saw a tremendous rearguard performance in which every man put his body on the line to block, chase or harry their opponents. The team showed great discipline, refusing to give Crossmaglen easy frees and forcing them to shoot wide or turn over possession. We scored only one point in the second half but the defence held out, limiting Crossmaglen to five scores, leaving a two point winning margin at the final whistle. The team and supporters joined on the field to begin the celebrations as Míceál McNamee lifted the trophy to proclaim Killeavy u16 champions for the second time in three years. Many congratulations to the team, managers Johnny McKevitt, Gerry Mallon, Gerard Reel and Gordon Magennis and a big thanks to our team sponsors Friar Tucks. The team will
now go on to complete for the unofficial Ulster Championship – the Paul McGirr trophy organised by the Dromore club in Tyrone.
Our winning team was Blaise McKnight, Ryle O’Hanlon, Cathair McKinney, Daniel Darragh, Barry Doran, Kyle Mallon, Fergal Connolly, Caolan McConville, Cathal Boylan, David Grant, Paul Quinn, Marc Magennis, Miceal McNamee, Calum Quinn, Declan Donaghy, John McAleer, John Kearney, Conor Nugent, Matthew Larkin, Sean Maguire, Shea Conlon, Conor O’Neill, Paul Markey, Conor McGarry. Well done all.

Saturday Evening Double Part 1 – Hurlers just come up short No less than eight u16 footballers who won the county title on Wednesday also lined out for our hurlers in last Saturday’s u16 county hurling final. This was our first time competing in a juvenile final for seventeen years but we were still approaching the match with high hopes. Derrynoose were much quicker to settle into the game possibly because of their greater experience. Killeavy looked nervous and were often caught in possession or wayward when passing. At one stage, Derrynoose led by eight points and it looked all over for us. Just before half‐time however, we scrambled home a goal which lifted the entire team and crowd.
Killeavy dominated play in the second half and with only a few minutes left, had overcome Derrynoose’s lead to level the match at 2.08 each. Unfortunately, just when it could have gone either way, it was Derrynoose that struck the decisive blow with a breakaway goal. Killeavy had no time left to respond again and it was heartbreak for management, supporters but especially the team who had given everything and just come up short.
Congratulations to the team for all they have achieved this year; we have some exceptionally talented young hurlers and the hope is that they will stay with the game and progress with Killeavy into senior level. The final line out was Fearghal Campbell; Alex McKeown; Calum Quinn; Gareth Larkin; Marc Magennis; David Grant; Fergal Connolly; Ryle O’Hanlon; Cathal Boylan; Matthew McEvoy; Paul Quinn; Declan Donaghy; Pauric McCafferty; Emmet Donnelly; Ronan Quinn.
Many thanks also to Eddie Fearon for his work with the team all year and to our team sponsors, Andrew Macken Photography.
Saturday Evening Double Part 2 – Seniors bridge 24 year gap
Killeavy seniors bridged a 24 year gap when they qualified for their first county final since 1988. They did so in stunning fashion, simply blowing away the challenge from Mullaghbawn in an exhilarating first fifteen minutes of play. All the talk going into this game was about how much Mullaghbawn relied on their defence to stifle the opposing team with some pundits marking the match down as likely to be a dour low scoring affair.
After the first fifteen however, the game was effectively over as Killeavy had destroyed the Mullaghbawn defensive set up scoring 3.07 (3.04 from play). The accuracy of the attack was impressive as they only kicked two wides in the entire match. The goals were equally spectacular ranging from a stunning Steven McDonnell strike to a wonderful solo effort by Michael Murphy to a real poacher’s score from Caolan Trainor.
If there was slight grounds for concern it was in the way the team let Mullaghbawn back into the game in the second half but there is no doubt that mentally they had eased off and had started their preparations for the final. The first half display had inflicted terminal damage on Mullaghbawn’s hopes and the second half was literally a stroll in the park.
The other semi‐final between St. Peters and Wolfe Tones ended in a draw on Saturday evening so we must wait for tomorrow’s replay before knowing our final opponents. Whichever of the Lurgan teams eventually win through, they will pose a real challenge but if we can reproduce the flow, power and accuracy of the first half display then we must stand a real chance of winning our first title since 1986.
There was great feedback to last week’s live streaming of Killeavy’s semi‐final. Our own Eddie Hill did a ‘fantastic’ job as co‐commentator and comments came into the studio from as far afield as Australia, Madrid and New York. Since Monday, another 535 people have viewed the recording of the match on the www.destinationnewry.com website. As one comment said, “It was worth it just to see Steven’s goal”. Log on for yourself to view the goals and the all round team performance. We are also very hopeful that the final will also be streamed live so please tell your far flung friends to watch out for it.

The future’s also bright
As Saturday 15th September was the first anniversary of our U10 coach Michael Doran, it was fitting that our u10 squad were able to honour three separate tournament invitations. At Dromintee’s Thomas McCrink memorial tournament the team lost out by a single point to Forkhill in the shield final. We also brought a very young squad to Omeath Cuchullains big festival day. They compted against the host team and Roche Emmetts and had the thrill of being presented with their medals by double bronze Olympian Paddy Barnes. Meanwhile in the prestigious Donal Powell tournament orgainsed by the Pearse Og club in Armagh, Killeavy played the shirts off their backs to emerge victorious from 24 teams, after six hard games against St Marks (Dublin), Clan na Gael, Grange, Pearse Og’s, Madden and then St Marks again, who they defeated by a single point in the final to lift the Donal Powell Memorial trophy. Congratulations also to Sean Boylan who was selected as the ‘Player of the Tournament’ and the full U10 squad for a tremendous effort in all events. Great appreciation must go to the Dromintee, Omeath and Pearse Og’s clubs for inviting us to such well‐run events and also to our managers and parents who literally travelled all over the country to coach and support our young players. On Sunday the U10 and U8 pulled out early again for a hurling blitz at Sean Treacy’s Lurgan. Our U8 team competed against Keady and Dungannon whilst the U10 team proved that they can emulate our Minor and U16 dual players by beating Keady, Lurgan and Derrynoose with some fine displays of skill and effort. Well done again to the host club Sean Treacy’s and to our parents and players for their excellent commitment.

Shauna brings home the All‐Ireland
Shauna Keenan from Killeavy was part of the Armagh Under14 camogs who made history at the weekend when taking home the county’s first All Ireland title at under 14 level after they defeated all before them in the Cooper All Ireland Under 14 Div III blitz in Dublin. Well done Shauna – you are a credit to the club and inspiration for all associated with Killeavy Camogie.
Altogether, 38 children and 7 adults left Killeavy to go to Croke Park to watch the All Ireland Camogie Final. Ulster were well represented with Down and Derry playing in the junior and intermediate competitions. The senior final Cork v Wexford was a spectacular showcase of skill. Half time saw the parade of the U14 teams who had participated the day before in their final. Killeavy Camogs were very proud and loud in their cheer for the victorious Armagh team and their clubmate Shauna Keenan who was part of this team. THe camogs have two more outings this month. On Saturday 22nd the u14's head to Crossmaglen for a blitz and Saturday 29th sees u10, u12 and u14 go to Shamrocks in Newry. Camogie will finish up for a well deserved break after the Shamrocks Blitz but watch this space for the return of training when we will be hoping for more Primary 5 girls to join us.
