III. Student Services and Bridging/Support Programs
At the University of Alaska Fairbanks, with over 40 years of experience working with students
from all over the state of Alaska, Rural Student Services (RSS) is perhaps the most established and well
known. Staff at RSS assists students in achieving success by linking current information pertinent to a
student’s education, lifestyle, and goals. RSS is known for its welcoming and friendly environment. Many
students find a meaningful connection at UAF through RSS.
Throughout the past four decades RSS has evolved to the changing needs of rural students – by
“acknowledging and incorporating a strong cross-cultural counseling base and involving rural communities
in forging new directions”1. The focus of these efforts is the continued success of Native and rural students
through greater retention and matriculation in UAF degree programs.
RSS staffs provide a vital link between the rural communities and the University of Alaska
Fairbanks. RSS works in cooperation with other UAF departments and programs to facilitate the success of
students; they also provide an atmosphere which allows students to comfortably exercise their traditions on
campus. UAF's Native and rural students use RSS as a forum for their concerns and as a gathering place for
Native feasts offered in cooperation with the Alaska Native Studies (ANS) Elders-in-Residence program2.
At the University of Alaska Anchorage, Native Student Services (NSS) provides quality support services
to Native and rural students which promotes scholastic achievement, student retention, and personal
success. Staff at NSS works with students to foster academic excellence, career development, leadership
skills, personal growth, college-transitioning, a sense of belonging, and the attainment scholastic and life
goals. The Center provides a safe, affirming space on campus. It is a gathering place where students can
find support, access resources, connect with community representatives, study with classmates, meet new
friends, and interact with people who share similar experiences as indigenous peoples.
NSS established the Native Early Transitions (NET) program that offers students exceptional help
in making the transition from village life to that of Alaska’s largest city. The program is offered the week
before the traditional start of each fall semester. First-time freshmen from small rural villages participate in
a four-day program aimed at easing rural student transitions and supporting their academic and social
success as UAA. Activities are offered to familiarize incoming students from rural Alaska to life in a larger
urban setting. In addition to being exposed to the services offered at UAA, students receive an orientation

III. Student Services and Bridging/Support Programs (Continued)
to using services in Anchorage—from opening a bank account to riding the People Mover bus system. The
NET program supports student from rural Alaska to more successfully transition to Anchorage and UAA.3
At the University of Alaska Southeast, the Native & Rural Student Center (NRSC) provides quality
support services to Native and Rural students which promote their academic achievement, student
retention, and personal success. The NRSC is a place for students to meet, form friendships, receive
academic advising and support and peer mentoring. The NRSC offers staff and support services to
promote student success in college through; academic advising and support, assistance with registration,
course selection and scheduling, as well as peer advising, mentoring, special orientations. Additionally, the
Center offers opportunities and special events on and off campus to help develop leadership skills in the
student members.
In summary – all main campuses of the University of Alaska provide services for rural and Native
students. In general, information on enrollment services such as admission, registration and financial aid
including, federal, state, and institutional as well as opportunities through Native Corporations are available.
In addition, advising services – both transitional to the campus as well academic are offered. In many
instances students also choose to pursue programmatic advising through their academic major.
The offices at each MAU are integrated into the flow and fabric of the institution. In addition, staffs
within RSS, NSS or NRSC are called upon to offer insight or their perspective on rural issues.
Staffs in all three service offices are trained not only in the procedures and protocol of the university
setting, but often possess a connection to rural Alaska – which often allows a greater sense of understanding
in working with students new to the urban environments of Fairbanks, Anchorage and Juneau. This
training and connection manifests itself in a commitment to serving students – which is evident in the
testimonials often provided by students to family or other students in their home communities considering
attending UA. But perhaps the greatest testament to the efforts of staff in RSS, NSS and NRSC in serving
Native and rural students, is when some of those students from a generation ago are now sending their own
children to the University of Alaska.
