The summer abroad internship program provides students interested in human and animal global health the opportunity to gain hands-on clinical and public health experience while being immersed in a local community. Excursions and language classes, where applicable, are also an important part of the culturally immersive programs.

Dr. Flynn has developed a number of writing courses for students interested in science/medicine, including Advanced Composition for Students in Health Sciences and Advanced Composition for Students in Biological Sciences. She has also taught a number of Freshman seminars, and a Humanities course on Medicine and the Humanities.

Academics

Students will work with each other and with Dale Flynn, the UCD faculty leader for this program. Dr. Flynn will be based in Davis throughout program. Online communication platforms may include: Smartsite, Adobe Connect, Skype, Google Hangout, Word Press.

This online course facilitates successful internships by giving students a forum for reading and reflecting about various global health concerns encountered in hands-on clinical and public health settings.  A series of short writing assignments and online group discussions will guide students through all stages of their internship experience.

What do CFHI Participants DO?

Your Experience Will Depend on the Following Factors….

• The level of experience/education you have had in a clinical setting

• Your comfort level in doing procedures or tasks open to you

• Language ability

• Local laws designed to protect patients, may limit what you can do while in clinic

• Most importantly: the relationship you build with your preceptor

What do CFHI Participants Do?

Responsibilities Vary, However Under the Supervision of a Local Preceptor…

• Community-Oriented Primary Care: tasks assigned by preceptor according to clinical level

•Hospital Rounds: oncology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, pediatric surgery, nephrology, emergency and outpatient care

• Patient histories and Physical Exams (In Spanish in Latin America)

• Aiding local preceptors with differential diagnosis

• Health Brigades or Community Health Outreach /Education projects

• Malaria and Dengue Brigades• Vaccination Campaigns

Program Logistics• In both Costa Rica and Nicaragua, students will be

housed dormitory style in secure lodging in a centralized location. Wi-Fi and safe drinking water will be provided. A member of ISL staff will be available 24/7.

• In both locations, students will work with local, licensed professionals. Observational and experiential learning opportunities will be provided.

• Students will be bused across the border from Costa Rica to Nicaragua, accompanied by ISL staff
