UDL comes from the architectural movement that led architects to design facilities and projects to become available with access to all. They figured that if they took into account these need at the beginning of their projects they could fix accessibility issues from the start. Such items as ramps, curb cutouts captions on TV, and talking signs all came from this type of approach. The approach to learning involved creating flexibility and creating alternatives in curriculum, materials, and teaching methods. What Inspired UDL

Recognition Ability to identify and understand information from primary senses, hearing, seeing, touch, taste, smell.

Strategy Ability to plan, implement and measure skills and abilities, and controls muscles.

Affect Ability to make emotional connections, interests, enthusiasmThree Neural NetworksTechnology plays a significant part in UDL, especially with using digital media. E-Books, interactive software, mobile applications are all used. The content can be changed and is flexible. This flexibility helps greatly in the UDL approach. An example could be changing the language for one student or increasing the font for a student with a visual impairment.UDL and Technology

Brain ResearchBrain research indicates learning is conducted thorough the primary senses, emotional connections and behavior. The brain distributes processes to the different parts of the brain according to the type of task to be done. Those networks are Recognition, Strategic, and Affective networks If the information or skill is not used the it could become lost. CAST Online ToolsUDL Book Builder allow teachers to create their own digital books. Can be edited, have images, prompts the help readers. Our teachers can use this program, especially with younger readers. Several of our teachers have developed detailed study guides this tool could help or even replace these products.

CAST Online ToolsUDL Lesson Builder allow teachers to create customized standards based lesson plans.. Our teachers can use this online tool to standardized lesson plans within a particular department or subject area.

CAST Online ToolsUDL Science Writer uses UDL principles to guide students though the science project writing process. All of our 6th Grade students are required to complete a science project. This would be a great resource for those students and our science
