Animals that are left to graze on the curbsof busy roads pose an extreme danger tomotorists. There are thoroughfares such asthe Rocklands Road that are notoriouslydangerous.According to Pine Pienaar, MPL and

Shadow MEC for Roads, at least five to sixfatal accidents occur in the Nelson Mande-la Bay Metropole per month which can belinked to animals being on the roads.“Last week I stood witness as a vehicle

narrowly missed a cow while I was photo-

graphing cattle grazing on the RocklandsRoad,” said Pienaar.“While I appreciate the work being done

by officials in the Metropole to control theanimals during the day, a major problemoccurs after hours when there is notenough manpower to impound stock suchas cattle, donkeys and goats.”Pienaar urges the public to make use of

the 24 hour emergency number 0079 4900540 to report stray animals on roads in theMetropole.

The East Cape Offroad Club heldthe 4th round of the Data ScoutChampionship this past weekend.

This race was scheduled for twoweeks earlier, but as a result of theheavy rains the venue was not ac-cessible. The committee had toidentify a new venue near Loerieand mark a route in short time, butdid an excellent job.

Each driver had to complete fourlaps of 25km. Most of the track wascovered in grass, at some stageseven a metre high!

This provided some testing driv-ing conditions as visibility forreading the road conditions waspoor.

Eventually André Ferreiraemerged as the winner followed by

Werner Olivier in second and Mar-tin Kleingeld junior third. The topnavigator for the day was MariskaOlivier, then Ilze Grundling fol-lowed in third place by Ian van Eed-en.

This concluded the day’s racingbut the championship is far fromsettled. There are still four possiblewinners, so it will be an all out atthe last race of the season on the 1stDecember (venue to be confirmed).

Oefeninge vir aanstaande jaar seseisoen skop reeds oor ’n week af,” het MariusSwanepoel, president van Despatch Rug-byklub gesê.Die klub se eerste span het vanjaar die Oos-Kaap Super 12 toernooi gewen sowel as dieGroot Uitdaagbeker en is as die OP klubkam-pioene gekroon. Die o.21 span was ook die wen-

ners van hulle afdeling in die provinsie.Volgens Swanepoel is die Gemeenskapsbekersoortgelyk aan die Varsity Cup met tele-visiedekking van al die wedstryde. Wedstrydebegin reeds in Februarie 2013.Despatch Rugbyklub was die nasionale klub-kampioene in 1985 en 1986 en is in 2008 en van-jaar gekroon as provinsiale kampioene.“Ons is dankbaar vir ons hoofborg Willem Oli-phant van GAP Management, wat baie be-trokke is by die werwing van nuwe spelers endie bevordering van die sport. Sy hand as di-rekteur van afrigting is duidelik in die spanse spelpatroon te sien.”Die klub bedank ook Adri Geldenhuys, EricToring en Eric Sauls vir die afrigting van dieeerste span en Rudi Dickson, Keith Grobler enGabriel Leonard vir hulle afrigtingsvernufmet die o.21 spelers.

“Danie Gerber het ons aan die begin van dieseisoen gehelp met fiksheids-oefeninge en hysal weer betrokke wees met die komendeoefensessies,” het Swanepoel gesê.Die formele oorhandiging van die Groot Uit-daagbekers aan Despatch Rugbyklub se eersteen o.21 spanne vind môre-aand om 19:00 vir19:30 in die klubhuis plaas. Toegang is gratisen die publiek word uitgenooi om die gesellig-heid by te woon. ’n Biertent en karaoke salreeds vanaf 18:00 oop wees.Kluboefeninge begin 19 November.
