Until you have w orked with a com pute r , you can n o t apprec ia te th a t everyth ing must be in o rd e r and complete before try ing to hand it the in form ation .

C aro lyn Sullivan o f the M em phis C h ap te r sent me a copy of their M em bersh ip C h a i r m a n ’s Checklist which they say has eliminated h a v in g t h e i r n e w m e m b e r a p p l i c a t i o n f o r m s r e t u r n e d by H eadquar te rs . This con ta ins a copy of the 99 Items F o r Sale (copied from the Sep tem ber issue o f The 99 N E W S), a copy o f C h a p te r m em b ers ’ names and addresses, a page w h ich e x p la in s N in e ty -N in e t e r m in o lo g y a n d th e i r C h a p t e r ’s activities. C harlene states tha t she would send a copy o f this packet to any C h ap te r C h a irm an sending her postage for same. T here you have tw o good ideas, bu t in bo th of those instances, I was writing a b o u t an incom ing m em ber. H ow do we locate potential m em bers? M any C h ap te rs send me their bulletins and 1 read them with g reat interest. I’m happy to report tha t a surpris ing nu m b er of C h ap te rs seem to be engaged in a s t rong m em bersh ip drive and are em phasiz ing keeping m em bers once we have them . M any C hapters seem to find new m em bers th ro u g h constan t ly checking a t flight schools as well as personal con tact . 1 presum e tha t m eans seeing w om en a t the a irp o r t a n d ask ing if they are N inety-N ines— if not, inviting th em to a t ten d regular C h ap te r meetings. M ost C hapte rs have potentia l N inety-N ines a t all meetings and m any conduct C h a p te r business (which does n o t require a m em bersh ip vote) at C h a p te r Board Meetings which are open to all C h ap te r m em bers and closed to all outsiders . This m akes m ore t ime at the regular meetings fo r p ro g ram s a n d informative discussions on flying.

An Open Letter to the Friends of Jerrie Cobb and Ruth Lummis

It is with great sadness th a t the San J o a q u i n Valley C h a p te r r e p o r t s the deaths of D o ro th y McAllister and Irene N e a lo n , tw o o f o u r m os t t r e a su re d members, w ho died in a plane accident in M arch with their h usbands “ M a c ” and Ivan while en rou te to Utah for a skiing holiday.

Both Dott ie and Rene exemplified the 99s ' h ighes t s t a n d a r d s . As was said du r in g the McAllis ter’s m em oria l ser­vices, "they were the best” the best of h u m an beings, the best o f friends and the best o f pilots. Each con tr ibu ted greatly to o u r lives and o u r flying organ iza t ion as well.

D o t t ie a n d R ene to o k th e i r f l ight instruction together in 1965 at the Palo Alto A irport and jo ined o u r San Jo a q u in V a l ley C h a p t e r in m id 1966. E a c h became Ins t rum ent ra ted and together they flew the Pow der Puff Derby in 1972 and 1976 placing 35th and 21st. They had p lanned to fly toge the r this year in the Air Race Classic. D ott ie had also flown the P P D in 1971 and 1975 as co-pilot with Laverne Gudgel. In 1973, D ott ie flew bo th the Palms to Pines and the Pacific Air Race. Each served in most all offices o f o u r o rgan iza t ion with to ta l c o m m i t ­ment. We miss them now an d will always, as I’m sure m any o f you will w h o read these words. We have been privileged for having touched their lives. The gifts they left each o f us are m any , but most certainly those of love, integrity and h u m o r are foremost.

By the t im e you read these words, Jerrie and R u th will have been deep in the A m a zo n a s jung le fo r a b o u t ten days an d in the midst o f a very difficult project.

Last m o n th , the m ain bear ing failed on the Is lander’s new engine d u r in g a flight over a ve ry r e m o te a re a o f th e ju n g le . Fo r tuna te ly , Jerrie was able to guide her disabled plane to a small jung le strip and land safely. However, the p lane is useless w ithou t a n o th e r new engine.

The tr ip back to the S ta tes to o k Jerrie and R u th eight days. T he first p a r t o f the jo u rn ey was accom plished in a du g o u t canoe. At one o f the small villages, they encountered a D C - 3 cargo p lane with a pilot Je rr ie knew. He agreed to take them p a r t o f the way back. Finally, a n o th e r m an flew th em back to F lorida. The t r ip was far f rom easy and took qu ite a toll on R u th physically.

The engine was replaced, but then they were faced with the m o n u m e n ta l task of find ing a n o th e r a irp lane to t ran sp o r t it to the rem ote jung le str ip and then replace it w i th n o n e o f the faci l i t ies n o rm a l ly assoc ia ted with m a jo r a irc raf t repairs. M ir iam Davis, a n o th e r 99 from Florida, vo lun teered the a irc raf t an d Betty Wright, yet a n o th e r 99, volunteered her help. A nd so the fo u r 99s plus the new engine launched off to w ard the head waters o f the A m azon to replace the engine. The Indians in the village will help build an assem bly table and tr ipod and help with the physical lifting, but the mechanical w ork is beyond their abilities. Je rrie estimates th a t it will take at least two weeks to com ple te the repairs.

Needless to say, this has been a m ajo r se tback for Je r r ie ’s h u m an i ta r ian w ork in

Item: “ It is interesting to note t h a t . . . the G A O (G ove rnm en t A ccoun t ing Office) has accumula ted $4 B IL L IO N in the Aviation Trust Fund on the g ro u n d s it would be infla tionary to spend it. In o th e r words, the government is saying user taxes we have already paid c a n ’t be sp e n t— but they w ant still m ore they c a n ’t sp e n d .” (Pilot News 5/79)

This year the F A A is a t te m p t in g to increase the 7c per gallon general av ia t ion avgas tax to a flat 10% (no t to 10c per gallon as reported last issue.)

They are also a t te m p t in g a new 6% excise tax on new general av ia t ion a irc raf t and avionics.

T h is c o lu m n las t S e p t e m b e r w a rn e d , “ L ook for a n o th e r D O T re-run o f this spec tacu lar next year, and the next an d the next, ad in f in i tu m .”

2. T h is c o lu m n last Ju ly : “ F A A has aw ard ed a $6.6 million con trac t to expand passenger an d baggage-hand l ing space at Dulles In terna t iona l A irport , W ash ing ton , D C . ”

3. This co lu m n yearly since 1976: The F A A says w e’re n o t pay ing o u r “fa ir sh a re ”.

The A ir Line Pilot (5 /79 ) q u o ted above, also included this s ta tem en t , "T he D O T and F A A a re c h a rg e d w ith d isp e n s in g th is (A irp o r t and Airway Trust) fund , which is i n t e n d e d to be u se d p r i m a r i l y ( t h e i r em phasis) to im prove the safety facilities o f the a lm ost 500 a ir carr ier a irp o r ts in this c o u n try .”

The T rust is being used primari ly for im provem en ts to the a ir carr ier a irports . Perhaps , since m ost o f the trust funds come from the tax imposed on passenger tickets, this is as it should be. However, while a t te m p t in g to assess o u r “fair sh a re ” the F A A is also reducing services slowly but surely to the general av ia t ion c om m unity , and a llowing m any o f o u r a irp o r ts to sink in to d isrepair a n d oblivion.

Witness: Due to the hard winter, the FA A is a llowing Designated Pilot E xam iners to give flight in s t ruc to r check rides, which have a lways been given by the FA A . At my local a irp o r t , this ride cost one o f my friends $100.00. (W hen the back log c lears up will they rem ove this privilege f ro m the private sector? I d o u b t it!)

W rit ten tests a re also being rem oved from the FA A auspices a n d placed in the hands o f Designated G ro u n d Instruc tors , w ho are allowed to charge $ 15-$20 per test ad m in is ­tered.

This is no t all bad. The convenience o f not having to take a d ay off f rom work to take the test with the F A A could be well worth the expense. Also, the abili ty to schedule a flight test in a sho r te r t ime fram e is definitely beneficial. BUT, where does the F A A come off with reducing services, increasing taxes a n d still sc ream ing “fair sh a re ”.

Deja vu again: This co lu m n 11/76, “The D O T cou ldn 't get the cost a llocation bill th ro u g h Congress , so they figured ou t a way fo r us to pay for the services we receive to private o rgan izat ions. T hat way we can pay twice: Once th ro u g h fuel tax and the use tax . . . a n d a g a i n t h r o u g h p a y in g p r i v a t e o rgan iza t ions fo r p roviding the service the FA A is collecting the tax to p rov ide .”

N ow for those w ho feel tha t I never have a kind w ord to say a b o u t the F A A , a kind w ord f rom a s ta te av ia t ion official: “ Lang- h o m e Bond has d one m ore for general av ia t ion th an any o ther A d m in is tra to r the F A A has ever had. He is the only one who has been able to jo in all the general avia t ion assoc ia t ions toge the r in a c o m m o n cause. T h ey a re all a g a in s t h im , b u t th ey 're to g e th e r .” vv

One o f the best ever Southw est Spring Section Meetings was held M ay 4-5-6 at W o n d er Valley “ D u d e ” R anch , Sanger, CA, hosted by Sa n ta C lara Valley with the welcome help o f the F resno Chapter .

Jack ie Petty, Nancy Rogers, P a t Roberts , Pa t Rowe a n d Verna West arrived W ednes­day a n d Vera Arno ld and R u th Theriault arrived on T hursday to set up for regis tra­t io n , h o sp i t a l i ty , p a r k in g fo r R V ’s, a i r ­planes, etc. T he resort is nearly 200 miles f rom hom e base for the San ta C lara Valley C h a p t e r , w h ic h c r e a t e d s o m e u n i q u e prob lem s in p lann ing a n d staffing. With the h e lp o f a c o u r te o u s r e so r t s t a f f a n d a beneficent w eather m an som ewhere , every­th ing was in o rd e r on time.

Friday m o rn in g W o n d er Valley was a b e e h iv e o f a c t i v i t y — a i r p l a n e s a r r i v i n g (S a c ra m en to Valley’s T helm a Drew, in her M ooney , was first), cam pers arriving, tents being set up. After a huge randh b reakfast on Sa tu rday , with the Section meeting ou t o f the way, Willy G a rd n e r and Stella Leis dem o n s tra ted a great A ir Age E duca tion project a n d had m any people m ak ing and flying kites m ade from plastic ga rbage bags! The guests were i n v i t e d to t o s s w a t e r - f i l l e d b a l l o o n s , c o m p e t e in t a b l e t e n n i s , v o l le y b a l l , horseshoes, ride horseback o r in the pony cart. Peg Ewert soloed on one o f H arry W est’s windsurfers. There were canoes and sa i l b o a t s a n d k id s f i s h in g ; f i e ld s o f w i ld f low ers , b u l l f ro g s a t n ig h t (a n d an occasional scream f rom a peacock). We were trea ted to an aeroba tic show by Julie Ames (Golden West) in her T-34 and Dick Collins in his Swift. Julie is a W estern Airlines Co- Pilot.

The day ended with a ranch style d in n er (if you call f laming Crepes Suzette ranch style) with prizes given for winners and losers o f all the games. C an you believe th a t we then had a s q u a r e d a n c e th a t la s ted u n t i l a f te r midnight?

M uch o f the g ro u n d w o rk tha t m ade this event a success was d one by Phyllis Pierce and her com m ittee before she moved to Oregon. It is a lw ays d if f icu l t to list th o se w h o he lp without leaving out names, but a m o n g those to w hom th an k s are due is Peg Moseley w ho gathered items for the "goodie bags”, Hanes B u r k a r t a n d E v e ly n L u n d s t r o m w h o gathered up prizes; Alice G ard n e r w h o m ade badges for everyone and Je an n ie Collins w ho si lkscreened the San ta C lara Valley logo on shirts an d signs.

In the b a ckground , no t a lways a p p a re n t to guests, the serious business of adm in is te r ing this large Section goes on. F o r G o v e rn o r M arg o Sm ith , O range C ou n ty , it p rovided the o p p o r tu n i ty to meet personally with her B oard o f D ire c to r s an d the e x p a n d e d advisory board . The C h ap te r C h a irm e n s ’ meeting has become a valuable fo ru m for exchanges o f ideas a n d for com m u n ica t in g with m em bers Section-wide.

F o r m any of us w ho have par tic ipa ted in n um erous Section meetings, there is a sense o f sa t i s f a c t io n in w a tc h in g off icers a n d delegates evidence their increasing skills by focusing on im p o r tan t issues, no t getting “h u n g -u p ” on trivia, listening to a varie ty o f v iewpoints and then m aking a decision.

There were m em bers o f o u r In terna tiona l W om en Pilots c o m m u n i ty f rom C h a r te r M e m b e r B e tty Gillies, to I n t e r n a t io n a l P re s id e n t , T h o n G r i f f i th , to the y o u n g w om en with their b ran d new licenses; there were w om en airline pilots, c h a r te r pilots, flight instructors and ra th e r a lot o f us who fly “ju s t fo r the fun o f i t”, and really look fo rw ard to these twice a year oppor tun it ies to get together with old friends a n d to m ake new ones.

F o r m ost, it is enough jus t to experience the great adven tu re o f personal flying. But there are o thers w ho have an overw helm ­ing urge to share their th o u g h ts ab o u t avia t ion with a nyone who will l is ten—and often these w om en do it with a book . It is not easy to put d o w n on paper w ords tha t pilots will want to read. It takes hours of r e s e a r c h , c o n c e n t r a t i o n , w r i t i n g a n d rewriting before this precious brain-child is born . And then, it is p ro b ab ly not going to be easy to sell. Why? There are several reasons— lack o f ad eq u a te p ro m o tio n by the publisher; o r lack o f loyal backing by f r i e n d s , a v i a t i o n b u f f s , o r a v i a t i o n organizations.

The Shreveport C h a p te r with Jane t Du- cote as C h a i rm a n for the event, spent six m o n th s ready ing itself and the to w n fo r the Louis iana Air T o u r , which was to arrive here on April 20 a t high noon . Considerab le effort went in to this. M a r th a Chris ty m ade her in fam ous red rag roses fo r each of the 35 pilots. T h a t ’s getting to be t rad i t io n with o u r c h ap te r now th a t Shreveport is the rose capital o f the world. Red rags, however, are becom ing m ore an d m ore expensive, so we are going to s tart p icking them up off the h ig h w ay . J e r e S a u r sp e n t severa l d ays "b u g g in ” roses f rom everyone she knew and som e th a t she d id n ’t. These were placed in each o f the reserved hotel ro o m s in vases th a t were acqu ired the sam e way as were the roses. We had a cafish re s tau ran t open at n o o n ju s t fo r this event. We had a guitarist fo r the occasion to a cc o m p a n y songs we had written fo r a singalong, crawfish races, and even the m a y o r ’s assistant cam e ou t to welcome the flight. So what happened? Did you read a b o u t the f lood in Louis iana? The m o n so o n hit . . . bu t good . O ne couple f rom Ft. W o rth , 99 H enrie t ta Pence and her h u sb a n d w ho were jo in ing the to u r here, was the only plane able to get in, and they were stuck fo r 2 days before they could leave. But the c h a p te r , a n d 49'/2ers tu r n e d o u t as scheduled and enjoyed the p lanned festivi­ties. So, all was not lost. We had hosted this event a couple years before, a n d had a great t ime, and were really look ing forw ard to it.

The sixty-two entries in the T en th A nnua l llli-Nines Air D erby fought tu rbu lence and high winds to arrive a t M a t to o n , Illinois, Coles C o u n ty A irpor t before the im pound deadline. All m ade it safely, bu t the planes coming from the n o r th had s t ro n g tailwinds seldom experienced in Illinois, while Lois Fe igenbaum , past President o f The Ninety- Nines, did no t believe her Aztec could go so slow as she fought the headw inds com ing from the sou th to M a tto o n .

S a t u r d a y m o r n in g d a w n e d c lea r , a l ­though c louds were forecast to roll in f rom the west du r ing the day. The planes in the proficiency ca tegory were soon fueled and the word went ou t th a t the race was to begin.

T hon Griffith , In te rna t iona l President of The Ninety-Nines and the h o n o ra ry starter , flagged off Race No. 1, Field M orey o f Middleton, WI in a Cessna 310. Field always makes an ou ts tan d in g takeoff , which thrills all the watchers. At 30 second intervals, the remaining co n tes tan ts were flagged off by Neil Pobanz , o f Moline, IL, w h o has been a very special friend to the D erby since 1971.

All planes re tu rned in t im e an d m uch fun and fellowship was had in the Hospitali ty R o o m , w hich was m a n n e d by B a rb a ra G ross , o f the In d ia n a D u n e s C h a p te r . Barbara put Perle Mesta to sham e, as the “hostess with the m os tes t” .

1979 Jim H icklin M emorial A ir Race

The San F e rn a n d o Valley C h a p te r o f the Ninety-Nines have d one it again! They held their 2nd successful race in less th a n three months. How did they d o it? W ith a lot o f hard w ork ing people w ho spen t m o n th s preparing fo r the race and spent a whole weekend m ak ing sure tha t everyth ing went smoothly.

The race was held April 21, 1979. All the 51 planes racing arrived by F r iday night for im pound , inspection, pre-race briefing, and a little socializing. On Sa tu rd ay , the w eather was beau tifu l— not a c loud in the sky. The course, which had been a secret up until Friday a f te rnoon , was challenging, a n d even some very experienced racers had a hard time finding all the a irports . The Okie Derby

The 'Ramp Rats' made sure each plane was in order and the tanks were topped off.

How d o you con d u c t an a ir race? Last w in te r the O k l a h o m a C h a p te r m e m b e rs w eren’t quite sure, bu t th a t certain ly was no excuse no t to have one! Besides, W ays and M eans C h a irm a n Phyllis H ow ard had jus t re turned from com p e t in g in a proficiency race in Arkansas , a n d she had an inside track on the s i tuation. She was convinced th a t not o n l y c o u l d we p u t o n a s u c c c e s s f u l p ro f ic ien cy race , e x p e r ie n c e d o r n o t , it would be fun a n d it would even fa tten up the t reasury a little bit. She was confiden t, we found ou t later, because she had found an “ e x p e r t " t h a t w o u ld t a k e c a r e o f th e technicali ties for us g reenhorns . So, af te r lis tening to Phy l’s enthusiast ic p resen ta tion , the general consensus was “ W hy not?!" and we decided to indeed have an a ir race.

One o f the largest areas o f concern was w hat to nam e the race. W hat cou ld be m ore na tura l than “Okie D e rb y ”? So, th a t was settled. The race was scheduled fo r S a tu r ­d ay A pri l 28 th , w ith i m p o u n d m e n t o n Friday, April 27th. Phyl, meanwhile, called h e r “ e x p e r t ” , K a y N e w t h , w h o is a professional race c o o rd in a to r f rom Little Rock, A R , and plans began in earnest. 49!^ers were drafted in to the “ R am p R a t ” sq u a d ro n so fast th a t they had assignm ents before m any could even say “ Okie D erb y ” !

Since the race was to be sanctioned by the N a t i o n a l R a ce P i lo t s A s s o c i a t i o n o f Am erica, it had to co n fo rm to very strict requirements. The course , which rem ained a secret until the night before briefing, would take the pilots on a three-legged course orig inat ing an d te rm ina t ing at N o r m a n ’s Westheimer Field. W ayne C ox o f Aero Flite, Inc., agreed to host the race and provide fuel, t ie-downs an d briefing room s for the contestants . Planes were limited to single and twin-engine a ircraft m an u fa c ­tured after Ja n u a ry , 1946.

Everything progressed beautifully . . . until the day before the race. Everyth ing was in o rd e r . T he t r o p h ie s w e re re ad y , the h o sp i ta l i ty r o o m was o v e r f lo w in g w ith culinary delights, the b a n q u e t a r ran g em en ts were finalized, the par t ic ipan ts were com ing f ro m fa r a n d wide ( l i te ra l ly ! )— a n d the weather started to fall in. Panic!!!This couldn't he happening!! T he sky was overcast and the ceiling low V F R with scattered showers. The ex tended forecast w asn ’t encourag ing either. But, the racers, optim ists that they were, cam e anyway. By deadline, seventeen planes were im p o u n d ed and despite the weather, there were no d am pened spirits.

was w rong . . . at least for a few hours. The racers d ep ar ted N o rm a n b o u n d for D uran t , in s o u t h e a s t O k l a h o m a , t h e n o v e r to Eufau la , the land o f lakes in the east centra l p a r t o f the s ta te , a n d f inal ly back to N o r m a n ’s m o re centra l locale. And then, in the e te rnal t rad i t io n of “perfect t im ing”, the last p lane re tu rned to the roost and the rains c am e . All d a y a n d all n ig h t long. But abso lu te ly n o b o d y cared . We had d one it! F irst- t imers and all, we had conducted a small , bu t highly successful race and it was jus t like Phyl had prom ised. We had all had

a w onderfu l t ime, the race, which went like c lockw ork , was history and the rem ainder of the activit ies were indoors anyway, so we could even celebrate the rain. And celebrate we did! The banquet was a feast deluxe, the speakers were am using , the doorpr izes were o u ts tan d in g an d there was nearly a t rophy for everyone. O n top o f tha t , it was a beautiful day Su n d a y for the flight home. The entire event c o u ld n ’t have been better.

Co-pilot duties were easier tor some than they were for others. It wasn't too bad for Nancy Smith, who co-piloted for Jan Million in their Cessna 182, 99NJ, but it was another story entirely for Ruth lummis, who serves as Jerrie Cobb's co-pilot in the Islander. N12JC.

This was the only 'uniformed' crew on the field. Jerrie Cobb, who was flying her 10-place Brittain- Norman Islander, invited a few friends along to share the fun. She had also found a big sale on shirts for some of her Indian friends in the Amazonas. Since they were all alike, they made excellent crew shirts, so the passengers and pilots alike donned shirts for the race Afterward, all were returned to resume their trip to the Amazonas. T h e p r o g r a m w as M C ’d by President o f the 0 X 5 , R alph M ajo rs and V ic e - P re s id e n t A b b y H a d d a w a y , b o t h aviation pioneers in their right.

Many Ninety-Nines were h o n o red at the luncheon . H e a d in g th e list o f h o n o re e s present were Melba Beard o f Scottsdale , AZ, who is a flight in s t ruc to r a n d a C h a r te r M ember o f the Ninety Nines, Inc. Ms. Beard flew in the w o m e n ’s air reserve an d m any National Air Races.

Claire Walters, a flight in s t ruc to r and P res iden t o f th e C la i re W a l te r s F l igh t Academy, Inc. at Sa n ta M onica was also honored. She is a past w inner o f the Pow der Puff Derby (A W T A R ) in 1951, has been a m em ber of the N inety-N ines fo r m ore than 34 years with over 33,000 logged hours to her credit. She was one o f the first w om en to fly solo across the Pacific, an d has flown all over the world. Ms. W alters is the C h a irm an of the Pa lms C h a p te r Ninety-N ines and also C ha irm an o f the Palms to Pines Air Race. Claire W alters is a co -fo u n d e r of the race which is now in its ten th successful year, scheduled to depar t f rom Sa n ta M onica on August 10. Ms. W alters is a lso the curren t start C h a irm an o f the Air Race Classic.

Youngest o f the honorees was Elizabeth Dinan. also a flight in s t ru c to r a t the Claire Walters Flight Academ y, Inc. A m em ber of the San Fe rn a n d o C h ap te r , she is know n for her a ir racing and has flown in m any Pow der Puff Derbys, In terna tiona l Angel Derbys and m any local races such as the Pa lms to Pines Air Race, the Pacific Air Race and the Valley Air Derby.

Elizabeth has devoted m uch time to the Wing Scouts and is well kno w n for her efforts with this g roup . She has been a winner o f the W o m a n Pilot of the Year Award from the San F e rn a n d o C h ap te r and the Southwest Section Ninety-Nines. Mrs. Dinan is a recent winner o f the Amelia Earhart Mem oria l Scho larsh ip which she used to advance her multi-engine training.

This year was the biggest yet. A ppro x im ate ly 70 a irp lanes registered with m ore than 200 po k e r hands being played. Most planes m ade the first s top o f their extremely windy and b o uncy 4 h o u r ride a t D anbury , C L where R u th D obrescu and her d a u g h te r were overwhelm ed. A dd it iona l poker sheets had to be con tinuously run off by Xerox until the final regis trants sta rted an h o u r a f te r post-t ime. The very next weekend comes the 4th A nnua l Buckeye Air Rally. Being held at Toledo M etcalf A irport , To ledo , Ohio on the 13th, 14th and 15th o f Ju ly . The R a llyan ed uca tiona l type o f event concen tra t ing on safety, pilo tage a n d naviga t ion is open to all l icensed pilots.

T h e n e x t w eek h a s tw o i m p o r t a n t occassions. The D ay ton Air Fair which is chaired by Vi Blowers. The Fa ir has been ex p an d e d to four days this year. Also the 5 0 th A n n iv e r s a ry o f the 99s w ith the conven t ion in A lbany begins with most Ohio m em bers a ttend ing . Som e m em bers have consen ted to remain behind and work the Fa ir so o thers m ay go to In ternational.

N .A .T .A . C o nven tion in St. Louis was served by hostesses f rom the Greater St. Louis C h a p te r w ho all say it was such a fun t im e for them . This is one vo lun teer project th a t is highly recom m ended , due to all the lovely flyin’ folk you meet, the fabulous meals p rovided fo r o u r services, and in teres ting speakers like M aureen O ’Hara Blair. Also, when the Missouri Pilots held their an n u a l conven t ion in St. Louis at the S h e ra to n W estport , Sue M atheis delighted the a ttendees with her speech “ Y our W omen in A v ia t io n ” tha t was very serious a bou t w om en flying, bu t a t the same time, laced with h u m o ro u s episodes f rom the trials of a w o m a n learning to fly!

Diane is a m em b er o f the Chicage Area Chapter and the o thers a re m em bers o f the I n d ia n a D u n e s C h a p t e r . B a r b a r a , t h e winner o f the N o r th C entra l scholarsh ip to the w orkshop in O K C last Ju ly presented this w orkshop as the first o f two, which all winners are m an d a ted to do.

T h e p u b l ic was invited to review four reels o f film, da t ing from 1927 th ro u g h 1938, o f Air Races, L indbergh; Amelia E arhar t; the opening o f the dirigible hanger in A k ro n , Col. Udett; Blanche and Dewey Noyes and m any o ther fam o u s avia tors .

Mr. W eiant is 80 years young, no t only is an avid pilot, bu t is now driving his 1914 Rolls Royce in an A ntique A u tom obile Rally, f rom Key West, FL to Nova Scota. Airlift was an overwhelm ing success thanks to all the volunteers w ho helped an d flew, to the good w eather th a t held over the weekend and to the public w ho tu rned o u t in d roves at Hayward Airport on M a rch 25. W ea the r c o n d i t i o n s w e re p e r fe c t a n d t h e w in d s t ra ig h t d o w n th e ru n w a y . So , g reased landings were the t r a d e m a rk o f the day. W ith o u t e x c e p t io n , all p a s se n g e rs were delighted and asked to be advised o f the next scheduled airlift. U nfo r tuna te ly , we had to turn m any away as there was a 2 h o u r wait later in the day. F ro m all o f this suppor t , o u r chap ter m anaged to raise close to $700, and we will be in excellent posi t ion to suppor t our c h a p te r ’s var ious Air Age Education p ro jec ts . Seve ra l p e o p le in th e a v ia t io n sector gave their su p p o r t in flying time and p u b l ic i ty . A1 H o u le a n d J i m R o b e r t s ( H a y w a r d A i r w a y s F ly in g C l u b ) e a c h volunteered to fly an h o u r and actual ly flew much m ore to help a cc o m m o d a te the riders. A v ia t io n T r a i n i n g , H a y w a r d A i r w a y s Flying C lub and Executive Air (who were also having the g ran d open ing tha t day) helped with publicity. It seems from the popularity o f this event and the b o o th we sponsor a t the Livermore Air Show th a t the general public still has a keen interest in all types o f aviation.

May 20th was bright and c lear th o u g h windy w h en F r a n c i s , J e a n S t r o o b a n t , L in d a Anderson and H ayw ard School District employee D o n Bacon to o k off with eight s tudents f rom H ayw ard 's T ennyson High.

The tr ip to S o u th C o u n ty A irport in San M ar t in was shor t but the som ew hat bum py a i r a n d tes ty c ro s sw in d re q u ir e d so m e c o n cen tra t io n on landing. After d in ing at the f am o u s Flying Lady R es tau ra n t su r­rounded by a beau tifu l 18-hole golf course in the foothills o f this ru ral c o m m u n ity , a tou r of the nearby Avia tion a n d A utom obile M useum com ple ted the day. This a irpo r t which is s i tuated only 23 miles sou theas t of San Jo se offers accessibil ity to this re s tau ­rant a n d recreat ion a rea co m p lex by on ly a te lephone call f rom the a i rp o r t fo r the c a r ’s s ta tion wagon. The day we visited all bu t a few tie d ow ns were full. The y oung m an who drove the s ta t ion wagon in to which we stuffed 13 adu lts said he had pu t over 200 miles on the ca r m ak in g tr ips to the a irp o r t t h a t d ay between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., and the d is tance is on ly 4 miles to the res tauran t. We were all intrigued by the severa l h u n d r e d large sca le m o d e l s o f fam o u s a irc raf t th a t m ade a hanging collage f rom the re s tau ran t ceiling.

As pa r t o f this endeavor , Je a n S t ro o b a n t . C h ap te r C h a ir ­m an , has been nam ed to be on the Air T r a n s p o r t a t i o n T e c h n o l o g y A d v i s o r y C o m m it tee a t Ohlone.

On July 7th, o u r c h ap te r is ga ther ing for th e G r e a t G o l d e n W es t F u n d R a i s e r Spaghett i Feed and Swim Festival at Pat F o r b e s ’ house . T o m a k e o u r T r e a s u r e r ecstatic, w e l l d o n a te $5 per person to help her ba lance the budget. E veryone’s bringing pilot friends for a real su m m er b lowout. I t ’s a great way to share wonderfu l “ h angar tales, shop talk, flying adven tu res , etc. and m ake m oney, too.

A lthough it required two sessions the Las Vegas Valley C h a p te r m anaged to comple te the a irm ark in g o f N or th Las Vegas Air T erm inal one m inute before official sunset M ay 19th, ru nn ing ou t o f pa in t an d daylight at ju s t a b o u t the same time. Those a t tend ing th a t second session were t rea ted to a “T ow er T o u r " where the ha rd -w orkers were able to ad m ire their a r tw o rk from aloft.

Plans for Las Vegas Valley’s first Flying C o m p an io n S em in a r a re also well un d e r­way. S c h e d u le d fo r O c to b e r 5 -7th the sem inar is sure to be a com ple te success as it is the first to be held in the Las Vegas area and has full c o m m u n i ty support .

Orange C o un ty C h a p te r ’s biggest Flying C o m p a n io n Sem inar yet! This one was different in m any ways. Due to the off-field l o c a t io n , t r a n s p o r t a t i o n had to be c o ­o rd in a ted to the a irp o r t fo r the pre-flight. More c h ap te r m em bers pa r tic ipa ted , m ore s im ula tors were needed, m ore help from local FBOs, a n d best o f all More Interested P eople! Now it’s on to new ventures! A Flight Ins t ruc to r Revalidat ion Clinic will be sponsored by the c h ap te r on Ju n e 29, 30 & Ju ly 1, 1979.

Verna West served as one ol the three m em b er panel to select a consu lting firm to draw up a new M aster Plan for the San ta C lara C o u n ty A irport system. Eleven firms subm itted bids, five were chosen to ap p ea r in person before the panel. The final selection was Hodges & S hu t t from San ta Rosa.

The Air Age E duca tion C om m it tee o f the San ta R osa C h a p te r has been very busy this spring d is t r ibu t ing av ia t ion curricu lum in fo rm at ion and av ia t ion co lor ing books to all school distric ts within S o n o m a C ounty . These booklets will be kept on file by the curricu lum resource co o rd in a to rs in each school district. A cover letter was enclosed with this m ateria l exp la in ing the pu rpose of the 99s and listing nam es and phone n u m b ers o f the Air Age C om m it tee m em bers w ho were available to go out to a school upon request to give a p ro g ram on som e aspect o f avia t ion . T o da te , th e c h a p te r has been able to a cc o m m o d a te and fill all requests with vo lun tee r speakers from the chap te r itself.

On M ay 8th. Carol Valette and Sherry Knight presented a p ro g ram to all 250 first, second, and th ird g raders at Yulupa School in San ta Rosa. C aro l and Sherry wore their “racing j ac k e ts" and talked ab o u t their experiences racing toge the r as a team over the past three years. T he children were to ta l ly fascinated with the p resen ta tion which included a skit and a hom e movie.

A special guest was Jean D a le -Jo h n so n , also a m em ber o f the A lber ta 99s, w h o lives 200 miles west o f C ra n b ro o k a t Cast legar B.C., nestled in between the M onashee and Selkirk m o u n ta in ranges.

The 99s and two 49!^ers in a t ten d an ce were given a slide p resen ta tion and talk by Liz W ebster o f the In te rm o u n ta in C hap te r , and her sister R o b e r ta T ay lo r o f C ra n b ro o k .

Their p resen ta tion described their bush flying experiences in N o r thw es tern O n ta r io when they worked fo r their fa ther 's char te r airline, flying seaplanes and ski-planes in sparsely settled areas.

Following the slide p resen ta t ion an aw ard was m ade to the past C h a irm a n o f the Alberta C h ap te r , on behalf o f the c h ap te r members.

Past Alberta Chapter Chairman Anola Laing (R) was presented an award by Nancy Rand on behalf of all the Alberta Chapter members during the joint meeting of the Alberta and Intermoun­tain Chapters held in Cranbrook, BC, May 12th. The award recognized Anola for her efforts in building the Alberta Chapter membership from 8 to 31 in the past three years.

In February , August Kreuger, fo rm erly a meteorologist with United Airlines, spoke to us on weather in te rp re ta t ion and a g o / n o go decision. His tips on ho w to in te rpret the in fo rm at ion assem bled by the w e a th e rm a n were gra tefu l­ly received by o u r m embers.

In April, H o w ard H u n te r spoke to us on gliding with pa r t icu la r em phasis on th e r ­mals, how to find an d utilize them . He ended his talk with time-lapse p h o to g rap h y of c louds im p o r ta n t to gliders in m o u n ta in o u s terr i to ry , especially the lent icular a n d ro to r clouds. Of spec tacu la r b eau ty was the time- lapse p h o to g rap h y o f g ro u n d fog.

George A nn G arm s and her husband , Mickey, a re presently en joy ing a flight to S o u th A m erica in their Cessna Skylane. The latest posta l describes their thril l in landing a t La Paz, the w o r ld ’s highest a i rp o r t at 13,400 feet, acco rd ing to George Ann.

Then B onnie a n d S a c r a m e n t o Valley m e m b e r R u th L um m is acco m p an ied Jerr ie on to New York City to see her accept the Bishop Wright Aw ard , nam ed after the fa the r o f the Wright Brothers. The three then flew on to Flor ida to help Jerrie get ready for her next t r ip to the A m azon .

Greater St. I .ouis m em bers were treated to a really super T.V. interview by St. Louis’ K S D T .V .’s J o h n Auble on the M ay 21st. 6:30 P .M . news. Val J o h n s o n and co-pilot Nelda Lee described their p lans to fly the H u g h es A irw es t Air R a ce Classic . Mr. Auble and the cam era crew met Val and Nelda at Weiss a irpo r t , shot pictures o f her landing and taxiing to pa rk ing ram p ( thank goodness tha t was a good one!) and they had a nice chat with Mr. Auble a b o u t the race. He had some still pho tos m ade an d Val is to call him with progress reports du r ing the race. He plans to use the phone reports “live", with the still p h o to s as background . Looks like we will finally get som e up-da ted race coverage in St. Louis , which until now, has been p oor , at best.

Chris Murdock, IN Dunes Activities Chairman, had planned a spot landing contest for the meeting, but was shot down by the weather again. Eleven planes flew in for the event in spite of the rain Flying wasn't too bad, but there was no way she could keep the line on the runway, so each plane that landed was declared a winner. Chris left the meeting with an arm full of Air Age Education materials to distribute to local schools.

Central Illinois Chapter is also selling copies of this photo taken after the May 6 meeting to mqmbers for $5 each, with all proceeds going to the Jerrie Cobb Foundation. Another project with profits going to the Foundation is waiting in the wings to be finalized at the next meeting. Idaho 99s flew fo Baker, OR for a meeting on the airport lawn. The person in charge of the weather was congratulated for performing above and beyond the call. Northwest Section Governor, Louise Wicks, who was the special guest of honor, accepts a cup of coffee from her co-pilot, Noel "Pappy" Wicks. Idaho Chapter's borders now push into eastern Oregon and include members from Baker, Ontario, Burns and Bend. This fly-in brought out six prospective members. Since then two of them have decided to join the Idaho Chapter.

President J a n e t Green flew in f rom Ocean Springs, MS. Their second surprise was to hear Irene Flewellen, C h a p te r C h a irm a n , call for Ja n e Hilbert , Evelyn Jo h n s o n , and R u th T h o m a s to com e forw ard to receive Life m em bersh ip in the Ninety-Nines.

Jane H ilbert was cited as the chap ter 's avia tion pioneer. She has been flying since 1930, first jo ined the Ninety-N ines in 1932 and is a c h a r te r m em ber o f the chapter .

Evelyn Jo h n so n , m an ag er o f the M o rr i s ­town Airport with m ore th an 35,000 hours o f f ly ing logged , was h o n o r e d fo r her con tinu ing efforts to w ard c h ap te r m e m b e r ­ship growth. She has been m em bersh ip cha irm an since 1967.

R uth T h o m as , retired school l ibrarian and char te r m em b er o f the chap ter , was paid tr ibute for her c o n tr ib u t io n s to Aerospace Education for children th ro u g h Aerospace W orkshops for Tennessee teachers since 1953.

T he activities a t this un ique d ude ranch m ade this " the funnes t” sectional o f all. In add it ion the flying aeroba tic s o f Ju l ie A m es (a pi lot for Hughes Airwest) an d the 99s w ho landed there left the o p e ra to r o f the ranch am azed with the com m en t, “ D am n. These w om en can fly!”. The three J ’s and Frances climbed in the m o to r hom e on Sun d ay a f te r a n o th e r delicious meal, and drove h o m e vowing to do this kind o f th ing again.

O ur c hap ter has purchased a copy o f the History o f the Ninety-Nines. Inc. to present to o u r public l ibrary in H ayw ard . This will be done on an auspic ious da te in the near future.

Golden W est’s D o n n a Vasco and Geri Wiecks took “ Rookie o f the Y ear” h onors for the best score fo r first-time pa r tic ipan ts in the Hayward-Las Vegas Air Race in May.

O ur very own Julie Ames was ho n o red as one o f four prest igious w om en in av ia t ion to pu t on a sym posium a t N o r th ru p School of Technology in Los Angeles recently. Julie spoke on her career as a com m ercia l airline pilot; Bobbi T rou t told stories o f when she first soloed (in a Jen n y ) and when she flew

the first w o m e n ’s a ir derby; Wally Funk spoke as a m em b er o f the N T S B ’s Accident Investigation Board; and R h ea Sed d o n who is a c and ida te a s t ro n a u t fo r the space shuttle gave som e interesting insights in the future.

Ju l ie ’s been busy flying too . She flew in the F resno 400 Air Race, which is a speed race with planes hand icap p ed accord ing to type. Ju lie cam e in 4th place and had the h ighest team score o f all the w om en in the race!

An unscheduled land ing was neces­sary in F resno due to a hydraulic failure and within two hours Hughes had d ispa tched a n o th e r a ircraft , this one a new T u rb o C en tu r io n piloted by ace a irc raf t sa lesman, T om Pickard . A quick ind o c tr in a t io n into the world o f a ir racing for T o m , and the team was off the following m o rn in g en rou te to Bakersfield and Las Vegas flying race # 7 1 and est im ating time and fuel strictly from the Cessna m anual . With th a t kind o f an unwelcom e hand icap , the g ro u p m anaged to finish 21st a rriv ing #2 in Las Vegas in t ime to greet the o th e r racers. Hughes Aviation hosted the open bar a t the a i r p o r t ’s Skyrider R estau ran t , a welcome sight for all the tired an d thirs ty pilots a n d co-pilots.

M onte rey Bay would like to th a n k the San ta C lara Valley C h a p te r fo r a most delightful Spring Sectional. Seven m em bers enjoyed a lovely weekend at W o n d er Valley. Som e were able to drive R V ’s, in spite o f the gas shortage, to park in the grass a longside the a irp lanes. D o n 't know which was the most enjoyable? O u r M ay meeting was a po tluck hosted by Sally and J im P lu m m e r in their gorgeous M onte rey hom e on one o f the m ost beautiful spring evenings ever. Fourteen m em b ers and their 49'/2ers a ttended . H arr ie t and Bill Brin p rovided slides o f building the VariEze and their in teres ting fly ing-cam ping experiences w i t h i t . W h a t h a r d w o r k , b u t w h a t reward ing excitem ent and fun-fun.

San Gabriel Valley 99s have been flying whenever possible. We have been to Santa Rosa fo r wine tas ting a lo n g with glider lessons as pa r t o f the package.

Several planes flew to Bullhead City on the C o lo rad o River where we rented a large houseboa t fo r the weekend and ju s t cruised up the river and relaxed. A few tried their hand at fishing, but that d id n ’t prove to be the way to go, so the ba r-b -que on board cam e in h an d y S a tu rd ay night fo r the steak fry.

We a t tended the an n u a l D ate Festival in Indio. We flew to Berm uda D unes for b runch and traveled by c a r to the Date Festival, which featured camel and ostrich races, horse show, exhibi ts and a carnival.

The big event for M ay is a fly-in to F rog T ow n for the an n u a l F rog Ju m p in g Contes t, where one may bring their ow n frog o r rent one. G o o d luck to all!
