PREFACE

Chapter 1. About this Manual

This user manual is intended to describe the contents and use of the UG/Hole Table Generator. It discusses all the functions that are available in the current version and the procedures that the user must follow to accomplish various tasks.

Scope

The main function of UG Hole table is to assist you to manage large number of holes by defining the properties of the holes with respect to its manufacturing process requirement for verification.

Audience

This manual is intended for the users of UG/Hole Table Generator. Prerequisities

Knowledge of Unigraphics Modeling and Drafting modules. Hardware and Software Requirements

a) Hardware requirements: Same as Unigraphics requirements b) Software requirements: Unigraphics NX2 – NX3

Organization of the User’s Manual

The User’s Manual for Hole Table Generator is organized as follows :

Chapter 2 Takes you on a quick tour of Hole Table features and lists all the functions Chapter 3 Gives you on a quick start on the use of Hole Table Generator, introducing

the basic steps of how to accomplish various tasks.

3 Quick Start3 Quick Start3 Quick Start3 Quick Start This section will guide you to prepare a Hole Table in a step by step manner. Let’s have a sample test file which is composed of 3 solids with holes ; In order to run the Hole Table you should activate either : a) Application ->Modeling OR b) Application -> Drafting - Activate Modeling application - Go to Tools > SIEMENS Toolbox > Hole Table

Unigraphics UG/Hole Table 3.1 Creating a new group

Creating or selecting a group is a must for activating the rest of the buttons. The group is actually represented by a WCS. So basically you are dedicating a WCS to a group of holes. The point here is that , the program initially filters all the holes with respect to their axial direction if it aligns with the WCS’s +Z or –Z direction. If there is no alignment, you can not select this hole in the proceeding steps.

- let’s select the intersection of two edges as the WCS origin while edges are the directions of X and Y respectively.

Group Name: Type in a descriptive single word Layer: The layer of all the stuff which will be

created during this activity.

Push

- Push button.

In this step you are free to use any WCS selection method. You can select an existing WCS as well which might be more appropriate for you. FAQ: What if you have some holes on the upper surface and on the sides as well? ANS: Think about the manufacturing of these holes, when you place the work piece on the drilling machine, drilling tool traverses in a single direction. In order to drill holes on the sides, you have to unclamp the work piece and rotate it over. So for the holes which are not aligning with the selected WCS Z-direction you need to create a new group.

3.2 Adding holes to group

- Select “Specify Face(s)” You can select any number of faces where the holes are residing.

For this sample case the upper surface of the green solid is chosen.

- Select “HT_GROUP_1” to activate all the buttons

The functions for adding holes to active Group are as follows:

For adding hole features only. If the parameters are removed or the part file is imported from another CAD system, it should not be used. The depth of hole is got from the parameters of the feature. For thru holes, the depth of the hole might be different than the actual depth.

A general purpose hole adding function. It can handle either parametric or nonparametric holes. The depth of the hole is the result of a physical analysis ; therefore it is the actual depth.

Add a point to the group and treat it as if it is a hole.

- Push button.

Simple Hole Type, Diameter = 10.2 Depth = 50 Occurrence = 9

Check “Pack similar holes” toggle to see the holes in compact form.

Select first and third entry to place them into the table. (Use Ctrl to select)

FAQ: What is the use of Feature Filter ? ANS: In some cases the number of hole types are so big that you need to see only certain types of holes , for instance only counterbore types or only simple hole and countersinks etc.

3.4 Assigning properties to holes

- Now, let us attend H7 tolerance to holes with Diameter=10.2 - Then push Apply … - and for the holes with Diameter=10, change the callout to “User Defined” and as Hole ID type in : “M10” - Then push “OK”

- Push button.

Select the hole first, to assign properties

Set the tolerance type (ISO)

When you select “Edit” button, the existing table is modified by the new values. If there are more than one table, user selects the one to be modified.

3.5 Reporting hole coordinates with respect to a C SYS You can get the hole report with respect to any CSYS. For doing that you need to first create a CSYS. Note that CSYS ,in general, is used for two purpose : 1- Defining the +Z and –Z for filtering holes which aligns to this vector. 2- Setting the +X , +Y and the origin. Most of the case a single CSYS is enough for fulfilling these definitions. For the sample here, we used this approach. We defined only one CSYS and used this CSYS through out the process. Now let us define a second CSYS and report the holes with respect to this CSYS.

- Create a CSYS with a descriptive name , “ref_1” for this sample case ,

- push “Edit” to update the table.

- Push button.

- Push button.

This time select the new reference CSYS

3.6 Creating Hole ID-Symbols in Modeling

Select ID-Symbol

Set ID-Symbol size

If you want to play with the character size or diameter of the already created ID-Symbols you can use Unigraphics functions : - Drafting > Edit > Style to edit size of ID-Symbol and size of character Another method would be to use Hole Table : delete the created ID-Symbols , set the new size and select edit to re-create.

3.7 Creating Hole ID-Symbols in Drafting To create hole ID-Symbols in Drafting: i - Create the ID-Symbols in Modeling ii - Delete the Hole Table in Modeling iii - Save the view iv - Goto Drafting and import the view v - Re-create the Hole Table in Drafting

Make sure that checkboxes are ON

FAQ: When you rotate the part, the ID-Symbols also rotate how to fix this case? ANS: Use Refresh button.
