What was planned
• Pilot project– Digitization

What has been done
• Pilot project– Digitisation
• Learned to use the scanners and the software• Scanned several documents and images• Tested OCR scanning• Tested negative film scanning
– USDL• Trained project employees in using DSpace• Submitted items into DSpace - USDL• Assessed some copyright issues• Submission worksheets have been produced
Results
• Scans are of good quality – it is an advantage to scan several pages to one document
• The project employees learned to upload documents into the Dspace software
• Created three communities and three collections in the USDL - DSpace.
• Uploaded small sized items to USDL - DSpace • Problem: uploading big files to the Makerere server in
Bergen• Copyright issues: many articles by MAK staff can be
published in the institutional repository if provided

Recommendations
• PDF should be the supported document format• The two suggested project computers should be laptops• More scanners for each of the USDL implementing staff• The staff of the university should be involved in selecting
what to scan and publish• Upload problem – use FTP server?• Create project information material – web-site and e-
publishing guide
