COMPETENCE (what you know or can do), IMAGE (what you are

known for) and NETWORK (who you know or who knows you)...

Therefore, if you deepen and/or broaden your Competence, manage your Image (reputation) positively

and build a strong Network; success becomes a sure banker...without a

Page 21: UICS Alumni Reunion Lecture 2011

A model for achieving success: Managing your IMAGE Your IMAGE is your PERSONAL BRAND:

Managing your image starts with being DISCIPLINED

Discipline comprises four major components (culled from the book: The Road Less Travelled by M. Scott

Peck):1. Delaying gratification: Sacrificing in the

present comfort (short-term) for future (long-term) gains.

2. Acceptance of responsibility: Accepting responsibility for your decisions and actions.

3. Dedication to truth: Honesty, both in word and deed, at all times.

4. Balancing: Handling conflicting requirements e.g. Work/ Life balance, Quest for money vs. Quest for professional accomplishments, etc.

Page 22: UICS Alumni Reunion Lecture 2011

A model for achieving success: Build a formidable NETWORK Your NETWORK enhances your reach:

Build and extend your personal network strategically

Key networking tips:1. Start from the obvious: Explore your

Alumni, Social and Professional groups.2. Group your network into three broad

categories: Your Mentors or Role Models, Your Peers and Your Protégés.

3. Develop creative ways of keeping your network active: Social media, Telephone or Instant messaging, face-to-face networking forum such as seminars, conferences, etc.

4. Seek opportunity to contribute to your network and not just be a receiver from the network.
