MDS AND UKCLOUD – THE PERFECT PARTNERSHIP

MDS technologies Limited (MDS) offers a cloud platform provided by the award winning cloud

services provider, UKCloud. We have a strong, committed relationship with UKCloud, the market

leader in the Digital Marketplace for G-Cloud Infrastructure as a Service, through a long-standing

relationship underpinned by a formal partnering agreement. MDS is a reseller, at cost, of UKCloud’s

cloud and we have resold services since the launch of the G-Cloud framework in February 2012.

Services. We have been a UKCloud Partner since their creation in 2011, and became a Preferred

Partner in 2016. This status enables us to provide a high level of service to our customers and gain

enhanced support from UKCloud.

As a UKCloud Preferred partner, MDS offers true National Institute of Standards and Technology

(NIST) cloud services, which are offered as part of a community cloud service only available to the UK

Public Sector and secured and managed in line with UK government security classifications.

UKCloud and MDS both utilise pricing models based on transparent charges and “pay for what you

use” on an hourly and/or monthly basis.

Service assessment guide

What the service provides

Unlike cloud-native applications, enterprise applications were designed in the age of virtualisation and

traditional hosting. Many applications running in the UK public sector today have a backbone powered

by Oracle software. They include ERP solutions, finance systems (such as payroll), HR systems and

a wide variety of citizen-supporting applications.

Oracle solutions have traditionally been subject to licensing and technical requirements that have

made it challenging to carry out cloud transition projects, and meet the government's Cloud First

policy.

Enterprise Compute Cloud for Oracle allows you to start your cloud journey with your Oracle

applications. It overcomes the licensing and technical barriers, and provides trusted, connected and

flexible Assured OFFICIAL and non-internet-connected Elevated OFFICIAL cloud platforms you need

to deliver your critical Oracle applications in the cloud. Enterprise Compute Cloud for Oracle can help

you achieve the business goals at the centre of your strategy, without risking your operational ability

to execute.

Given that we also provide other compute solutions, including Cloud Native Infrastructure (powered

by OpenStack) and Enterprise Compute Cloud (based on VMware), we can deliver a suite of services

to meet all your needs, enabling you to leverage the benefits of digital transformation while

maintaining your investment and integration with traditional Oracle-based services.

What the service can help you achieve

You can maintain, and even improve, existing citizen-facing services without interruption

There is no contractual or technology lock-in. You have the flexibility to re-architect the solution if your requirements change or you wish to adopt a new technology

Because the service is optimised for the performance and availability of Oracle workloads, and is compliant with Oracle’s licensing requirements, you can license only the processor cores used

You can ensure business continuity by using the UKCloud Oracle platform for Disaster Recovery as a Service

Enterprise projects, especially those involving Oracle software, are often large and complex. Our

platform is tailored to enterprise application needs, but we appreciate that may be just part of the

overall solution. We have a broad partner ecosystem that understands the UK public sector and has

expertise in supporting and managing enterprise infrastructure projects into the cloud. Our partners

include:

Managed service providers (MSPs). Specialists in the design, management and support of environments built on UKCloud’s cloud platform, or that span multiple cloud and on-premises environments, MSPs help to reduce the complexities of platform management.

Systems integrators (SIs). Understand UKCloud’s cloud portfolio and are experts at bringing together individual components to deliver entire cloud transformation projects, efficiency drives or complex, multi-faceted cloud solutions.

Developers and independent software vendors (ISVs). Able to provide fully packaged applications or SaaS solutions that leverage UKCloud’s secure cloud capabilities.

Strategic advisors and consultants. Specialists who can help define strategy, develop action plans and create solutions, if you require additional advice about delivering solutions in the cloud.

Configuration options

Enterprise Compute Cloud for Oracle provides workloads with an uncontended infrastructure

optimised for the performance and availability of Oracle workloads.

You can right-size the allocated resources to suit the changing demands of your application; ensuring

performance and avoiding over-capacity. You can specify the resource allocation of each workload

independently: simply choose the appropriate number of CPU cores, amount of memory and required

storage from the catalogue.

This Oracle-powered platform is compliant with Oracle’s licensing requirements, enabling you to

license just the processor cores you use.

In addition to these commercial benefits, Enterprise Compute Cloud for Oracle offers a number of

technical benefits specific to Oracle workloads:

Use of core-pinning technology means that Oracle workloads operating on the UKCloud platform aren't subject to the types of movement that can unbalance Oracle applications running on other cloud platforms

The scalable nature of UKCloud’s service enables you to add or remove cores in line with your understanding of the performance requirements of your solution

Self-service management of your environment via our Customer Portal, which can also be used to programmatically control your Oracle environment

You also benefit from:

Virtual firewalls. Manage connectivity into and out of your environment — self-service and free of charge.

IPsec and SSL VPN/SDN. Create secure connections between users and other environments using a variety of included tunnelling technologies.

Basic load balancing. Configure active/active solutions that are resilient to outages and can handle high levels of activity, using our on-platform out-of-the-box load balancers.

Persistent storage. Your data remains, even when a VM is turned off. Our persistent storage ensures your application data remains consistent and available.

Whether you’re looking for high performance or long term retention with a view to cost efficiency,

there's a storage option to meet your needs.

Tier 1 block storage Tier 2 block storage Object storage

Fast storage ideal for data warehouses, fast transactional databases or randomly executing workloads

General all-purpose storage, suitable for systems with human interactions or predictable work patterns

Ideal for serving media content or as a medium-term repository; can be used to store recovery manager (RMAN) backups

Protection

Enterprise Compute Cloud for Oracle doesn't include infrastructure-level backup or restore products.

Instead, we offer an underpinning infrastructure that can support native Oracle technologies such as

Data Guard and RMAN data protection solutions.

If you need help to include these Oracle technologies in your solution design, we can introduce you to

one of our partners who specialise in Oracle solutions.

Pricing and packaging

Oracle workloads are priced per hour, and your bills are based on the resources you actually allocate

to your solution. In contrast to traditional hosting models, this ensures there's no lock-in to

unnecessarily licensed or under-utilised hardware.

Our flexible pricing enables you to map neatly to your existing specifications and scale resources up

or down based on new or changing requirements. You’re not constrained to the resources identified in

a design phase.

To model a total cost of ownership, you should consider additional elements, such as licensing,

connectivity and service options, which are described in the UKCloud pricing guide.

Our service doesn't include licences for the Oracle applications and databases you choose to run. As

the underlying platform is powered by OVM technology, you can either transfer your existing licences,

or confidently buy new licences based on the quantity of virtual processors you allocate within each

VM.

If you need help defining the best licensing approach for your situation, we can introduce you to one

of our partners who specialise in Oracle licensing compliance, optimisation and fulfilment.

Connectivity options

UKCloud provides one of the best-connected cloud platforms for the UK public sector. We offer a range of flexible connectivity options that enables access to our secure platform by virtually any government user community or system. Discount and purchase schemes

You can find full details of each scheme in our pricing guide.

An SLA you can trust

We understand that UK public sector organisations need a dependable service that demonstrates

value to stakeholders, which is why we offer one of the best SLAs on G-Cloud.

What's more, we back our SLA with Service Credits. If we fall short of our agreement, we'll

compensate you with Service Credits so that you can be confident we have a financial incentive to

deliver on our promises.

The table below outlines the SLA and Service Credit details. For more information, see the terms and

conditions.

Service level agreement 99.95%

Portal level agreement 99.90%

Availability calculation Availability is calculated based on the number of hours in the billing month (for example, 744 hours for months with 31 days), excluding any planned and emergency maintenance.

Measurement of SLA Unavailability applies to existing workloads that become unresponsive due to a fault recognised at the IaaS layer or below, that is, the fault is within UKCloud-controlled components, such as the physical infrastructure availability, storage, power and internal networking such as physical firewalls and routers.

Owing to the nature of Oracle workloads and the need to pin them to processor cores, workloads will be moved only in the event of a hardware failure. This will not be a live migration and an application restart is likely to be required.

Key exclusions The following are examples of what is not covered by the SLA:

Faults within your control, such as client application issues

Faults within external connectivity providers (for example, DDoS-protected internet, PSN, Janet or N3/HSCN) and components colocated at UKCloud

Service Credit 10% of monthly spend

1% of monthly spend per 1% below service level target or part thereof for the UKCloud API and Portal.

Service constraints

Enterprise Compute Cloud for Oracle includes features such as reducing the activity of live migration, which means that workloads are more likely to be disrupted during planned maintenance activities such as patching and tuning.

UKCloud will adhere to the following in terms of maintenance windows:

“Planned Maintenance” means any pre-planned disruptive maintenance to any of the infrastructure relating to the service. Planned Maintenance activity may result in periods of degradation or loss of availability depending on the nature of the activity required. In such cases, UKCloud shall provide affected customers with at least fourteen (14) days' advance notice of the Planned Maintenance.

If during Planned Maintenance there is a loss of availability outside the scope described in the planned maintenance notification to the service, an SLA event will be triggered, but excluded from Service Credits.

“Emergency Maintenance” means any urgent maintenance required to prevent or mitigate against any event compromising the infrastructure relating to the service. Whenever possible, UKCloud shall: a) provide affected customers with at least six (6) hours’ advance notice and b) carry out the emergency maintenance between the hours of 00:00 and 06:00 (UK local time) Monday to Friday or between the hours of Saturday 00:00 to 06:00 (UK local time) on Monday, (including bank holidays) unless there is an identified and demonstrable immediate risk to customer

environment(s). Emergency Maintenance may result in periods of degradation or loss of availability depending on the nature of the activity required.

If during Emergency Maintenance there is a loss of availability to the service, an SLA event will be triggered. This time will be excluded from the availability calculation but will be included in monthly service reporting related to the service.

Technical requirements

Customers will require appropriate network connectivity such as DDoS-protected internet access or accredited connectivity such as a government secure network to our platforms. Connectivity via the DDoS-protected internet, a government secure network (PSN, Janet or N3/HSCN) or private leased line is available but may incur additional charges if the hosting of CPE routers is required — see the pricing section for more details. Where they are required, customers are responsible for procuring and managing appropriate devices or software to meet the requirement for data security over the various forms of connectivity.

Customer responsibilities

Ensuring appropriate Oracle licences are in place for the database and application components of the solution. UKCloud partners can assist with this if required.

Management configuration and administration of layers above the IaaS (for example, OS patching, application performance monitoring and database administration).

The control and management of access and responsibilities for end users including appropriate connectivity, security and accreditation if required. If access is required over government secure networks such as N3/HSCN, Janet, RLI or PSN (including legacy networks), the customer is responsible for adhering to the relevant Code of Connection (CoCo) and for providing evidence of their CoCo to UKCloud upon request. UKCloud is unable to provide access to secure networks where such evidence has not been provided by the customer.

Customers must be aware of the variable nature of the billing based on usage.

The customer is also responsible for ensuring only lawful data that supports the UK public sector is stored and processed by applications on this environment, and that they fully comply

with the UKCloud Security Operating Procedures (SyOPs) and other information assurance requirements as specified in the UKCloud System Interconnect and Security Policy (SISP) and associated accreditation documentation sets.

Termination

Terms

Customer can terminate this service by providing UKCloud with not less than 30 days' advance notice in writing.

Customers using Global Load Balancing or Application-tuned DDoS protection service options have a minimum term of 12 months for these specific services.

At the point of termination, all customer data, accounts and access will be permanently deleted, and will not be able to be subsequently recovered or restored.

Costs

There are no termination costs for this service. Customers are responsible for extracting their own data from Enterprise Compute Cloud for Oracle if required.

UKCloud may make an additional charge for transferring data out of the service.

Offboarding

Customers are expected to maintain a master

copy or backup copy of the data used in

Enterprise Compute Cloud for Oracle. So

there is no requirement for the customer to

transfer their data out of the solution at the end

of the contract. Rather, the customer simply

has to securely delete the data prior to the

termination of the contract.
