JOINT LETTER FROM SCA & SPC

The COVID-19 outbreak has made the last few months difficult for most of us and very distressing for many. We have had to learn to cope with a new way of living and the response to these new challenges by members of the community in Saltford has been magnificent and we are very grateful to so many persons. In March representatives of local organisations came together to establish the Saltford Support Hub, which, as many of you will know, set up a Helpline to assist residents in need through the provision of shopping, pharmacy and emergency food deliveries, post office services, counselling and other support. The work of the Hub has been made possible through over 200 volunteers, including a group of local chefs who provided over 900 hot meals to vulnerable persons during the first three months of the crisis. Volunteers also delivered over 200 afternoon teas to elderly persons in the area on each of the 75th anniversary of VE Day and the Queen’s Official Birthday and will do the same to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VJ Day on August 15th. Funding for the operation has been provided by Saltford Parish Council, the SCA, a grant from the Quarter COVID-19 Support Fund and amazingly generous personal contributions from local residents, including £1950 from members of Saltford Community Church. Although restrictions are slowly being lifted it is expected that the consequences of the crisis will result in continued hardship for many in the community and the work of the Support Hub will continue over the coming months – simply ring 01225 632216.Saltford Parish Council has generously approved a grant to the SCA to cover the costs of this special edition of the SCAN. This has enabled the SCA to provide all local businesses with a free advert. The SCA would encourage you to support all advertisers at this difficult time.In addition Saltford Parish Council has provided a grant to the SCA to cover the cost of the 2020-21 affiliation fees for all not-for-profit organisations affiliated to the SCA to enable them to get back up and running. Inside this edition many of them give an update on their future plans as lockdown starts to relax. Again please support these organisations which play such a vital part in our village.The SCA is planning to reopen the Saltford Hall on Monday August 10th for hirers whose activities lie within the government guidance for restarting. Strict protocols concerning cleaning and social distanc-ing will be maintained to ensure adequate protection against the virus and we look forward to seeing as many users as possible as we resume our steps back to a more normal life.Our thanks again to all residents who have supported Saltford’s COVID19 response, both during lock-down and as restrictions have eased. Saltford Parish Council and the SCA are currently discussing ways to recognise and thank volunteers for their efforts. SALTFORD COVID-19 SUPPORT HUB

Whilst SCAN has been “off air” the SCA has been busy setting up and running our vital support hub for vulnerable residents. This is ongoing, albeit in a reduced capacity and residents should still ring 01225 632216. The following is a very brief description of the operation of the Hub since the end of March 2020.

All this was made possible by 200 volunteers who came forward from across the village and a few in Keynsham. A huge thank you for your time and dedication especially if you are still actively helping residents.

We set up a call centre with much help from Jon Godfrey a dedicated phone number for residents to ring, which is answered by a bank of volunteers in their own home using VoIP technology.

From the start, all calls resulting in some form of help being needed, have been centrally logged. We have provided help with emergency shopping, pharmacy, PO Services, dog walking, home visits, phone conversations, bike repairs, sample pickup, emergency plumbingand electrical work and pastoral support.

We have done 2 leaflet drops and countless Facebook posts and emails to residents in the village to ensure that everyone knew how to get help if they needed it. We have also done all we can to support and promote local businesses throughout this crisis.

In addition we provided over 900 hot meals on a Saturday night to vulnerable residents. This has been possible through the volunteering of a team of chefs, a large number of deliverers and through the generous donations people have made to the hardship fund. We have also provided 400 afternoon teas to residents 75 or older to mark 75th Anniversary of VE Day and the Queen’s Official Birthday. Huge thanks to everyone who made cakes and scones for these or came down to the Hall to make mountains of sandwiches and box them all up for delivery. We have also helped mark some landmark birthdays and anniversaries during the lockdown as their planned events had to be cancelled. It was great to see so many of their neighbours come out and support.

Planting, when all steps are considered, releases considerable quantities of carbon and thus requires substantial time to become carbon neutral, let alone carbon positive. SALTFORD WOMBLESWell, the Wombles have certainly been very busy indeed during the last few months. Our volunteers have been using their exercise time during lockdown to litter pick around the village and when lockdown rules were relaxed slightly in May/June and so many visitors came to the river area and left their litter behind, we really came into our own.Saltford Wombles would like to thank ALL of you for the tremendous amount of support you have shown us and for helping us in cleaning up the huge amount of litter the village has had to contend with, (in May alone we collected over 300 bags of litter and around 6000 nitrous oxide canis-ters), we couldn’t have done it without you! We now have a clear plan of action should it happen again and with thanks to a generous grant from SEG to buy new equipment and our award from SPC, we are ready!Following the Keep Britain Tidy guidelines, we can’t resume large group picks as yet, but we are planning to have small socially distanced picks to clear hot spot areas as they arise and of course you can all help by looking after your own patch or favourite spot!If you would like to join us or know more about Saltford Wombles, please contact Barbara at saltfordwombles@gmail.com

KEYNSHAM & SALTFORD WINE CIRCLEHello to all Members of Keynsham & Saltford Wine Circle. I hope that you are all keeping safe and well in these strange times. Thankfully there is some easing of the Covid-19 lockdown restric-tions that we have all been enduring, although it probably will mean little change for many of us. Mercifully we can now have physical contact with our families, which is a great relief to us all.

SALTFORD ENVIRONMENT GROUP

Don’t blight the land that feeds you!During the lockdown residents may have seen local news coverage that Mactaggart and Mickel Homes Ltd are looking again at trying to get plan-ning permission to build 200 homes on 25 acres of safeguarded Green Belt land between Saltford and Keynsham next to Crest Nicholson’s new Hygge Park development after their failed attempt last year (2019). SEG and Saltford Parish Council (SPC) submitted robust objections to those proposals that so clearly ignored any informed knowledge of what sustainable development actually is and means. SEG is maintaining a close watching brief on this and our Green Belt Campaign is ready to mount a campaign to resist such developments should this prove necessary.A report in June “Let Nature Help” from the Wild-life Trusts highlights measures other than tree cov-er for sequestering (storing) carbon as a response to climate change. For example grasslands lock in a lot of carbon and thus for many areas of B&NES it may be more appropriate to protect and restore existing grassland and other similar habitats to protect both the species-rich habitat these provide and also the carbon they do or can lock in rather than change those valuable ecosystems to young

The Wine Circle met last March just before lock-down, when Alan gave a tasting of some excellent wines from Waitrose - what a long time ago it was!Since then as a result of the ongoing events, the Committee decided that no further Wine Circle meetings will be held until at least March 2021. Of course this also means that the Christmas Dance is cancelled. This is a sad time for us all when we cannot meet to enjoy a glass of wine and the convivial company of our friends. Hopefully we will be able to get together in the New Year. KEYNSHAM PARKINSON’S UK I am most grateful for the message about SCAN and the offer by the Association of a free year’s membership for our Parkinson’s Bath branch. We would like to take up this opportunity as we do find it useful. At the local Keynsham coffee mornings we are pleased some Saltford people find their way there, and we enjoy being part of your special events.Our committee met recently via Zoom and it was good to see everyone again. As you can imag-ine, we are still a long way from planning a firm programme for the coming autumn.

K&S DEMENTIA ACTION ALLIANCEI’m afraid that our club’s activities have been seri-ously compromised by the coronavirus pandemic. Shortly after our Music for the Mind session on Thursday 12th March in St Dunstan’s we realised sadly that we would have to stop our singing ses-sions until further notice. At the moment we don’t know when we will be able to restart. It’s a great shame as we had built our group up and were regularly getting 12 to 18 people living with demen-tia coming to our sessions along with their carers. We all get a lot of enjoyment from the singing . It is wonderful to see the effect that music has on those living with dementia and their carers as they share precious time together.We have been in touch with the local care homes in Saltford and Keynsham that look after dementia patients and that includes Kingfisher Lodge. We’ve

been looking at ways that we may be able to help them to make life more interesting with those who are living with dementia. None of the homes appear to have had any major problems with Covid 19 so far. Let’s hope that continues. SALTFORD WALKERSHello Fellow WalkersHope you are all safe and well. It has been a long time since our last walk and I know you are all very keen to start walking as a group again, however current guidelines still limit groups to 6 including the leader, all social distancing ,there-fore at this time it is with great regret that the com-mittee feel it is not feasible to resume our regular walks. I apologise that there is no better news but im-mediately the guidelines change we have walks ready to go.Please feel free to organise your own walks within small groups if you wish to.Please remember the anniversary walk and coach trip have been cancelled.Please stay safe.

SALTFORD MORNING WIWe are living in unprecedented times and have all faced challenges we could not have imagined at the start of 2020. Sadly many have lost loved ones to Covid 19 or know or are related to people that have. Our magnificent Health Service staff have worked tirelessly as have carers in our community and key workers who have kept vital services running and we at Saltford Morning thank them for their commitment. We had members who contacted and shopped for others. We were due to attend events which were subsequently cancelled and instead have donated our deposits of more than £450 to the local foodbank, oth-ers have manned helplines, made masks , made contact with those living alone. We have recently organised “friendship bubbles” where groups of six members can come together safely and have a good old chat. Not to mention the newly formed discussion group. Thanks to one member and her husband we have held weekly committee Zoom

meetings. Lockdown gave us the kick we needed to embrace technology! Not all of us liked what we saw as we carried out DIY haircare! We have kept in touch with regular newsletters drafted by our President. Our committee are pleased to announce, plans are afoot for us to be reunited at Saltford Hall beginning October 2020 . To maintain safe social distancing we aim to meet in the main hall on the third FRIDAY MORNING of each month. KEYNSHAM ROTARYKeynsham Mencap Music Man Project - sup-ported by Keynsham RotaryThis year Keynsham Rotary had earmarked a major part of its Community fundraising activity to supporting Keynsham Mencap. It had been the intention to donate to them the proceeds from our annual Plant Fair (scheduled for 16th May) but, as with many other organisations, COVID-19 thwarted our plans. Luckily some funds were available from last year which, augmented from Rotary International Foun-dation sources raised a total of £1500, which has been now been transferred to Keynsham Mencap. This money is going towards their ‘Music Man Project’ which provides enjoyable and engaging experiences that gives ‘voice’ to their musicians and helps educate the wider community about the valued work undertaken by Mencap.A spokes person commented: ‘Keynsham Mencap has only the highest aspira-tions for what can be achieved by a person with a learning disability and the Music Man Project provides inspirational performances from our creative artists and offers a platform to raise awareness about the incredible difference music can make. As a result, emotional well-being, basic skill development, self-discipline, teamwork, co-ordination, communication and social skills are all significantly enhanced through the study of music. In the last year the group has grown in membership and the number of performances has increased, therefore this kind donation will go a long way to providing some much needed musical equipment, that includes percussion tubes, a mix-ing desk, additional drums, shaky eggs, triangle

holders, and small folding tables for members to put instruments on safely’.Lisa O’Brien (Keynsham Mencap Chairperson) added: ‘This donation will really help in these challenging times. The Music Man project, although not able to meet in person, has used Zoom to link members and their music together, encouraging home made instruments and certainly bringing joy, particularly to some of our rather isolated members.’Keynsham Rotary is keen to support such community projects and we look forward to being able to resume our important fundraising projects in the coming months. John Pike has just been inau-gurated as the new President of Keynsham Rotary, suc-ceeding his wife Lynne whose year in office has, sadly, been blighted by the pandemic. Saltford Santa Dash is back for 2020!We are delighted to announce that the Saltford Santa Dash is back for 2020, after taking a rest last year. We had hoped that this festive event would return bigger and better than ever this year, but as with many things in 2020, we’ve had to adapt our plans slightly to suit the times we’re living in.The Santa Dash will still be an event for the whole family to take part in, bringing the local community together at Christmas and raising much needed funds for local charities. However, this year it will be a virtual “dash”, inviting participants to com-plete a chosen route anytime between Saturday 5th December and Saturday 19th December.

BATH GUILD OF EMBROIDERSBath Guild of Embroiderers meet at Saltford Hall monthly. We are a friendly group of embroider-ers who would welcome newcomers to join us, either as a member or just on our workshop days.Unfortunately, like many other groups, we have had to cancel tutors this year because of Covid 19. We hope to be able to resume classes soon. SALTFORD SCRABBLE CLUBOur friendly club which meets on Monday after-noons can’t wait to get back to the tables but as we are all very much over 70 we are not expecting this to happen before the first Monday of October 2020.In the meantime in the last month just a few of us have met one to one and had an occasional game in the garden. SALTFORD PRIMARY SCHOOLSaltford Primary School is looking forward to wel-coming pupils from all year groups back to school in September. Thorough planning is required to make sure that we comply with Government Guidelines and do our very best to alleviate any concerns that children or parents may be feeling. By the new school year, some of our children will have been away from the classroom for six months but we want to reassure them that, although dif-ferent in some ways, school will still be a place where they will be cared for and have fun. Our thanks to all our families who have been based at home for working hard via our online systems.School will be slightly different in September and each year group will have an induction day on either 3rd or 4th September. Children in years 1 – 6

will be back at school full time from Monday 7th September.We hope to resume our usual extra-curricular ac-tivities as soon as possible, although this will not be possible for the first couple of weeks of Term 1.We are also looking forward to welcoming our 60+ children new to Reception and other year groups to our Saltford family.Many thanks to Saltford Community Associa-tion and residents of Saltford for all their support throughout this very challenging time – it is much appreciated by our school community.

SALTFORD BRASS MILL Very sadly Saltford Brass Mill will remain closed to visitors this year. We are targeting May next year to reopen provided we can make the Mill environment safe for our visitors and volunteers. So all the displays and models which form the Education and History Interpretation Centre inside this Scheduled Ancient Monument remain stacked high or taken away in their winter storage. Storm Dennis did visit and brought more than a foot of water to parts of the Mill. Fortunately the water didn’t say for long - the volunteers spent a Saturday morning washing and sweeping out a layer of fine, slippery silt!Saltford Brass Mill Project volunteers work through the year to keep the mill and garden in good shape and develop new ways to interpret its fascinating story for visitors. Did you know that a young man named Abraham Darby was sent by Quaker merchants to the Low Countries in the very early 1700s to discover some of the secrets of their success in brass making? He brought back immigrant workers and their families to the Avon Valley. These were skilled men, used to metal working with charcoal made in the abundant local forest as their fuel. Changing regimes meant some suffered religious discrimination and welcomed the opportunity to move to this area. Many of their families worked here in the brass industry for generations, their names cropping up well into the twentieth century. K&S FOREVER FRIENDSThe ever enthusiastic Keynsham and Saltford Forever Friends Group, through the inspired efforts of one of their members, have continued their fundraising for the new Cancer Care Centre at the RUH throughout the lockdown.Betty Smith, a Saltford resident and keen member of the group, has used her green fingers to tremendous success by selling vegetable plants to local villagers. During lockdown Betty realised that it was going to be difficult for people to source plants for their gardens and allotments and so the seed was sewn to fundraise through selling her spare plants. In addition, Betty has also been busy making gorgeous floral lavender bags, raising £40 for the RUH in her latest sale. It just goes to show how individuals can make a difference!The Keynsham and Saltford RUH Fundraising Group have recently reached a total of £10,000 fund-raised and put their planned summer events, a jazz picnic, a flower arranging demonstration and music concerts on hold due to the virus re-strictions. SALTFORD WHIST CLUBDue to the constant handling of playing cards, the close proximity required for players and, not least, the age of the majority of club members, the Monday afternoon meetings will not recommence until safety for all can be assured.It may be necessary to wait until a vaccination has been found and given to all elderly folk.

AVON WILDLIFE TRUSTKeynsham Group of Avon Wildlife Trust had to can-cel all activities for the Spring & Summer season. But that didn’t stop some of our members from getting out there on their own, replicating planned trips. Our annual Dawn Chorus with our chair, Dave Sage, went ahead as normal as he undertook a solo early morning walk in Stockwood Vale. A different venue from the normal River Avon route that he has used for many years, however just as productive as he heard and saw 30 species of birds including a male tawny owl calling, several blackcaps, a garden warbler and a great spotted woodpecker “drumming” loudly above his head.

Our field trips officer Liz Wintle enjoyed the botany of Keynsham Park, while walking her dog each day. And she produced three photo reports of the wild flowers and magnificent trees as they came into flower and leaf. It is surprising how much is in front of our eyes and at our fingertips if we just stop and look!We encouraged people, via social media, to send us their lockdown wildlife photos to share (and continue to do so), and during this time of lockdown our website has been created, www.keynshamawt.org, so our season has not been a complete disaster. Plans are afoot for a very different Autumn/Winter program, with our first walk on Saturday 5th September, so sign up for our monthly e-news through our website or e-mail keynshamawt@gmail.com to find out more.

KEYNSHAM FOODBANKThis is our first entry into Saltford’s SCAN maga-zine. Keynsham Foodbank has had a very busy few months. In March we had to move out of our warehouse in Broadlands School when the school was closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. We moved temporarily into a commercial storage unit in Longwell Green. After a long search we will be moving the warehouse into a permanent unit in Marksbury near the Co-op. Broadlands was free so we have recently been raising funds the cover the rental cost of our new warehouse.In the last 3 months we have seen a significant increase in the number of people turning to the foodbank for help. In the 12 months ending 31st March 2020, we fed 1283 people that included 612 children. In the last 3 months we have already fed about 1200 people.Prior to the pandemic, our Saltford Distribution Centre was issuing food to an average of 7 people per week. Once coronavirus started to get a hold the number of people needing food increased to an average of 30 per week. PART TIME POST OFFICE COUNTER CLERKVACANCYWe have a vacancy for a part time Post Office Clerk at SaltfordCommunity Post Office. We are looking for someone to undertake a job share initially covering Fridays and occasional holidays. The successful applicant will be expected to work 9am – 1pm and 2pm - 5pm on Fridays with 5 weeks equivalent paid annual leave. Pay will be £10 per hour.

Previous Post Office experience is not essential as training will be provided by Post Office Limited, but previous experience in sales with a customer service focus and a background in handling money will be an advantage.

During lockdown we have been making plans for the return of our beloved stage and our desire to put on more amazing shows and performances at the hall.

At the time of going to print we have just completed the building of our new mezzanine floor space in the hall and we are all very excited at what this new space will allow us to provide.

We must ask that you are enthusiastic, physically fit and prepared to embrace modern technology and work in dark places!!

However if the dark side of the stage is not quite what you are looking for in a new hobby then our groups that put on performances are always looking for actors who are prepared to be in the limelight.

Saltford Community Post Office and Library As you may be aware, the Post Office and retail operation has been available on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday throughout the lock down period. The Saltford Community Library and Post Office Hub management committee are pleased to announce that from the week commencing 24 August, the Post Office and retail operation will be open to our Saltford residents, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday each week. Our counter clerk, Trish, has gone above and beyond by covering Friday opening for Judi who had to care for her aged parents under lock down. Sadly, Judi’s mother died recently and we offer her our sincere condolences. Judi will be returning to staff the Post Office on Fridays from the 14 August. At last we are making progress in reopening the library. We have agreed that the library will open one day each week on a Thursday commencing Thursday 17 September. Please note: The 17th September and the 24th September will be to return books only. We are expecting a large number of books that have settled on your shelves during lock down and it will take a couple of weeks to process these. From Thursday 1 October, the library will be open for browsing, reserving books and enjoying a friendly chat, (at a social distance and with face covering, of course!) Thereafter the library will be open every Thursday until we can see a way through to open more frequently. Please rest assured we will be monitoring the situation and will return to full library service as soon as it is safe to do so. I would like to pay tribute to our wonderful team of volunteers who have learnt to operate a traffic light system whilst under the duress of wearing a face visor as well as keeping their hands sanitised. Thank you so much. I would also like to thank our committee members who have put in long hours and wrangled with regulatory authorities in order to provide as full a service as possible to our residents through the pandemic. Let’s hope we can move forward and grow our business and library as we approach 2021.

SPC’s COVID19 response

SPC’s role in Saltford’s response to the impact of COVID19 can be seen on the front page of this edition, in a joint letter from Cllr Chris Warren (SPC Chair) and John Davies (SCA Chair). On 17th March, Cllr Warren chaired an emergency meeting of key community members (‘the Saltford Hub’) to discuss how the village would support residents thorough the pandemic. Cllr Warren chaired a second meeting on 24th June to discuss future support needs for residents, local organisations and businesses.

An SPC grant was awarded to fund the leaflet sent to allresidences in late March (pictured), which detailed the Saltford Hub’s contact details for support and volunteering. SPC also awarded funding to provide hand sanitiser for COVID19 volunteers. More recent funding includes a grant to the SCA for this edition of SCAN, as well as covering local not-for-profit organisaions SCA affiliation fees for the coming year. A letter of thanks from Cllr Warren to everyone that has volunteered their time and resources can be found on SPC’s website. SPC will continue to play a central role in Saltford’s response to COVID19.

SPC actions during periods of high visitor numbers

As lockdown restrictions eased, Saltford experienced a high number of visitors to its ‘old village’ and river side areas. Many residents contacted SPC to raise their concerns. For a full report on SPC actions in response to this please see ‘Latest News’ on the SPC website. SPC continues to advise residents to contact the police on 101 if urgent (or 999 in an emergency). Excessive littering can be reported to B&NES Council at www.fixmystreet.com. Thank you to those residents who have called the police when required and a special thanks to the Saltford Wombles for their hard work these past weeks. SPC continues to be in regular contact with A&S Police and B&NES Council regarding this matter. Frequent police patrols will continue and B&NES Council launched their ‘Don’t be a Tosser’ anti-littering campaign in July. B&NES Council have also installed temporary parking bans at Mead Lane and The Shallows (in place at the time of printing).

SPC meetings - update

As reported in local press, Saltford Parish Council was one of the first Parish Councils locally to take steps to ensure its effective continuation in light of the COVID19 crisis. An extraordinary SPC meeting was held on 20th March to a to approve its High Consequence Diseases Policy. Thisensured the smooth functioning of the council if unable to meet in person. Following new legislation allowing Parish Councils to meet remotely, SPC resumed meetings on 2nd June via Zoom. SPC will continue to meet remotely and will reassess this following any change in government guidance. The public are welcome to join SPC’s remote meetings, details are on our website. PERMISSIVE FOOTPATH DONATION APPEAL Firstly our thanks to everyone last year for their generous donations which allowed us to raise the £3000 (including Gift Aid) needed to keep 4.5km of permissive paths open to the end of October 2020. Due to the coronavirus lockdown we have not been able to publish SCAN since the end of January 2020 and have therefore not had a chance to launch this year’s appeal before other than on Faceook. I know very many of you during lockdown especially enjoyed your daily walk and taking advantage of the lovely countryside around us. We hope that many of you enjoyed using these wonderful permissive paths to the south and west of Saltford/east of Keynsham. We are therefore sure that many more of you will this year be happy to make a donation to keep these paths open for casual walkers, dog walkers, runners and horse riders. If we can’t raise £3000 by the end of October 2020 all the paths marked in green will close forever. So, if you walk, run or ride a horse on any part of the 4.5km of permissive paths, then we strongly encourage you to support this appeal. An average of £25, plus Gift Aid, is a small price to pay for continuing to enjoy over 4.5km of footpaths. Appeal for Plastic BagsDuring lockdown restrictions many of us have changed to re-ceiving our supermarket shopping through deliveries. One of the less positive consequences of this change is that quantities of plastic bags are coming into our homes. What can you do with them?

The Foodbank, Keynsham’s Coronavirus COVID-19 Response group and the new Children’s Centre Food Club all need clean plastic bags for their deliveries.

A Saltford craft group, looking for things to keep their hands occupied, have offered to fold our spare clean plastic bags and transfer them for re-use to the food distribution groups. You can see the result of some of their bag folding here (picture insert)

Free Fuel VouchersCitizens Advice B&NES have received funding from the Energy Redress Scheme to pro-vide £50,000 of free fuel vouchers to 1,000 B&NES residents. The vouchers are available in denominations of £28 for a single person or £49 for a couple or family and over the course of the funding each family or person can receive 3 vouchers so potentially £147 of free gas & electricity.There is no use by date on the vouchers.

The only 2 criteria for eligibility is that you’re on a pre-payment meter of some sort (this can be key, card or web/app top up) and you’ve been affected by Covid in some way (e.g. kids at home schooling using more electricity)

B&NES councillors’ report – Saltford ward

Thank you to everyone involved in the amazing community response to the Covid-19 emergency. Thank you to all the key workers in our ward. Thank you to all residents for following the guidelines without question. Cllr Hounsell spoke to a B&NES full Council meeting highlighting the community effort in Saltford.

We acted decisively and introduced a series of temporary parking bans in Mead Lane and The Shallows to deal with congestion caused by large numbers of visitors trying to access the riverside area. B&NES Council has worked closely with the local police to keep traffic flowing and to make social distancing possible. B&NES Council has removed vast numbers of bags of litter waste. Thank you to “Saltford Wombles” for col-lecting so much of the discarded litter.

The speed calming VAS (visually activated sign) sign has been moved to the entrance to Saltford on the A4 near The Glen where it is more effective in slowing traffic.

The engineering surveys of the river-bank and road in Mead Lane are going ahead and will take place soon.

Fred Smedley - 9 April 1934 - 18 April 2020

We are sad to report that during lockdown local retired

dentist and Company Secretary of Saltford Community

Library/PO Hub died. He will be sorely missed. The

following has been provided by Erica Davies, his daughter :

Fred was born a Yorkshireman but lived most of his life in

Saltford. The legacy of his Yorkshire beginnings meant he

would never pay for anything if he could do it himself and

this led him to acquire many skills over his lifetime. After the

War by watching builders he learnt to brick-lay, electronics

from school theatrical productions, and we all remember

him repairing his 1964 Landrover up until very recently.

He qualified as a dentist at Bristol University in 1960 and

moved to Saltford after marrying his wife Hilary and getting

a job with Somerset County Council at the Health Centre

in Park Road, Keynsham which has now been demolished. He was one of the school

dentists driving around the Somerset villages towing the caravan and equipment

behind his Landrover at a time when dentistry for children was very limited. He and his

wife Hilary purchased a dental practice in Charlton Park, Keynsham in 1968 where they

practiced as National Health dentists until they retired in 1998.

Fred was a man of many interests and after retirement he spent more time working on

his hobbies including: rebuilding pipe organs, photography and walking with Saltford

Walkers. Most recently he became very involved with the reopening of Saltford Post

Office, training as a counter clerk and recruiting staff and volunteers which he enjoyed

enormously.

He had a dry but wicked sense of humour which included merciless but gentle teasing

of his longtime neighbour Johnny Bake who had been a sweet salesman for Trebor, the

joke being that John’s profession provided a constant source of sweets for the children

in the road and a subsequent income for Fred’s dentistry practice!

He leaves his wife Hilary and three daughters, Erica, Corinne and Jeanette and two

grandchildren, Francesca and Luke.

Update on Hall Improvements during closureSaltford Hall has been closed since 23 March and three of our four part-time staff were immediately furloughed to reduce our significant monthly losses. With effect from 1st July two of our staff have partly been taken out of furlough to make preparations for reopening on 10 August. Our income stream has fallen almost to zero but we were grateful for a one-off government grant of £25,000 which will all be used up and more to cover our monthly losses.

Fortunately, our reserves are sufficient to enable us to weather the crisis and make investments for the future. Wherever possible these have been done using local people/companies. When you next visit the Hall, you will notice several improvements to the buildings :-

New Chairs - The final batch of our new chairs has arrived (cost was £12,000).

Main Kitchen – this was modernised using a local firm, with installation of a new gas cooker range and a much improved extraction and ventilation system. Our thanks to Lionel Saunders (cost was £4450).

Upstairs ceilings – these have been completely replaced by local ceiling specialist Mark Jones (cost was £3990). The ceiling lighting wasalso modernised by the installation of LED panels throughout the first floor by NDH Installations at a cost of £2000, which was supported by a grant from the B&NES Ward Councillors’ Empowerment Fund.

Upstairs Rooms – we took the opportunity for amuch-needed redecoration and instead of using our normal group of volunteers asked local decorator Andrew Bentley to undertake the work(cost £1680). We also decided to replace the very old curtains with modern vertical blinds and used Paul from Blind Base in Saltford to make and install them.

Mezzanine – after more than 3 years in the planning, we finally undertook the work to construct a mezzanine balcony at the rear of the main hall to accommodate the sound and lighting equipment and its operators. The balcony itself has been constructed by Saltford builders A C Martin Ltd and the wiring installed by our local electrician Nigel of NDH Installations.

We thank all our local suppliers and with the hall reopening on Monday 10 August we slowly and carefully look forward to welcoming you all back.

SALTFORD & KEYNSHAM FLOWER CLUB

At a time when we are all looking for hobbies to do indoors, flower arranging can provide a sense of achievement and brighten up our homes.

During Lockdown members have been creative, making Door Rings to show their appreciation of the NHS staff and essential workers. They decorated them in green and blue, with ribbons and foliage. The ring symbolises everlasting love, the cycle of life and hope with green for renewal and blue for the NHS.

This stunning arrangement shows different types of foliage and seed heads from the garden, cutting leaves to make different shapes and being arty with vase and placement of the finished design.

Another idea was to create a ‘Still Life’ arrangement by setting up a design combining objects with a flowers and plant material. A Guide can be found on our

It seems like a different world, but earlier this year we were pleased to welcome Rev Mike Leaves as the new pastor of our small local church. Mike and his wife Jayne joined us, from Bethany Church in Swansea where he was pastor for 25 years. Then it all changed as a result of this pandemic, and in line with Uk Gov guidance, and with most business and premises, we had to halt and postpone most of our regular activities. We have, however, been able to continue with our Sunday services by having them pre-recorded and viewed either on our website or on our Youtube channel. Now as things start to return to some sort of normality and with new government guidelines, we are now able to use the church premise for our Sunday morning services, but our evening service is still pre-recorded and uploaded to the internet. SUNDAY SERVICES11 am - A shorter, modified service. With social distancing and other mitigations in place.6.00 pm - A pre-recorded message available via our website or our Youtube channel.(Unfortunately we have no Sunday school or creche facilities available at this time).

WEDNESDAY - PRAYER MEETING & BIBLE STUDYWe have been able to continue to have our mid week bible study by using the Skype and Zoom platforms. This is where we study the bible and relate it to our own lives, this includes vibrant discussion and practical application. We also firmly believe that prayer works and unashamedly pray for our community, family, friends and the needs of others. A message from our pastor Rev. Mike Leaves

In these days in which we are coming out slowly from 'Lockdown' we all can be anxious and quite frightened. How will things work out, am I going to keep my job, is there going to be a second spike, what if I catch Covid 19. Let me draw you to one of the psalms in the Bible, Psalm 139. This is a tremendous psalm of King David and one of my favourites. It is a psalm that declares the greatness of God and that God is all powerful, He knows all things and He is everywhere. This surely must be a great comfort to all who truly believe in Jesus. Because this psalm tells us that wherever I am God is always there for me, there is nowhere that I can go where He is not. He knows all about me and yet He still loves me. He is almighty God and so in Christ Jesus He can deliver me from all my enemies, as David tells us, from death, and hell itself to life eternal with Him.God is always near to all who love Jesus in whatever circumstances we find ourselves "Even there [in that circumstance] your hand shall lead me and Your right hand shall hold me." Psalm 139 verse 10. Praise God that the believer in Jesus is held by God and nothing, nothing can take us out of His hand.As I close, let me quote to you something that a godly Christian lady said in a concentration camp in Germany during World War II, just before she died she said; "There is no hell so deep that He [Jesus] is not deeper still."May you find peace and comfort from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.Rev.
