LOST PROPERTY The following items were left behind at Salt ford Hall after the recent KLOGs performances of Sweet Charity : A round blue cushion. a ladies red scarf and a small silver ring (which was found in the car park .) Contact Margaret or Keith Richards on 01225400256 to reclaim. SALTFORD SHORT MAT BOWLS CLUB Another good bowling break at the Victoria Hotel, Torquay, was enjoyed by 31 members and friends of 55MBC. Different names were winners this year, and trophies were awarded for Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours . The matches were hard fought, as players adapted to the new faster bowling mats . Ex-Saltford members, Pat and Norman Graham, brought their new team mates from Bishop Kerswell to play against us. Sadly, they won! The weather was unkind, but with a full programme of bowls, the new large swimming pool, and many other facilities, all agreed it was a most enjoyable 6 days . -A Cryer At the end of our third season in t.he 2nd Division of the Bristol & District League Short Mat Bowls Association, we arc delighted to have won the Division trophy and will be promoted to the 1st Division next season. Our team will of course experience evcn harder competition in a league where most teams include County players . This however can only be good

those days, but some of us are still around and it is important that we record our memories of those days. Saltford Communiry Association is inviting anyone interested to come along to an informal reunion on Tuesday, September II th at 2.30 pm in the Wansdyke Room at Saltford Hall to talk about their experiences or to listen to the experiences of others. If you are interested but unable to attend for any reason, please call 01225 873231 and we can arrange to see you. Everyone's memories are worth hearing. Bunry Dunford (nee Waller) The Cares and Concerns of Older People - Dee Foot of Age Concern Insurance Services says: No-one likes paying for insurance after all you are paying to protect yourself from something that you hope will never happen. But what if disaster or an accident does happen? When you are older your home and its contents mean so much to you, your comfort and your security should be protected . You put good locks on your doors so that you feel safe and you need good insurance at a sensible price, for your peace of mind. Age Concern contents insurance starts from as little as £18 p.a. for £7,000 cover.

Come to see me at 3, Abbey Green or phone on 01225 443279, if you need advice and information on safeguarding your home and your personal possessions. Don't delay and live to regret it. Obituary - DA vro SAYER It is with deep regret that SCAN reports the death of David Sayer aged 53, who was one of the villages most dedicated, prolific marathon runners. He collapsed and died suddenly in March from a dilated artery. A service of thanksgiving was held at St Mary's Church on Friday 6th April conducted by Chris Hare, now rector of Timsbury & Priston, who returned to Saltford especially to pay respects to a longstanding friend. Participant in countlcss local marathons & mini marathons, David was in training for his sixth appearance in the London Marathon this year. He leaves a wife Chris, who recalls him, "as a wonderful husband & father", and children, Jane 20, Simon 18 and David 16. A modest & self- effacing man, he will be missed by early starting Saltfordians for his cheerful "good morning" as he pounded out the training miks in preparation for his ncxt race.

Association News

Project 0102 First our thanks to those of you who read the flyer enclosed with the last issue of SCAN - if you didn't receive one then

874081 and we can rectify the omIssIon. And our thanks to the distribution teams for handling the extra paperwork - what a smooth operation that is every two months. It cannot be said that, as a result of the extra publicity, people were queuing up to offer to become SCA Chairman - we still have a vacancy, and others. However, one was made about offering assistance with the monthly Celia Lapin, a former Honorary Officer, has to hold the cover a week's holiday in and Peter Dando has offered his expertise in the Health and field when we come to carrying out an audit of the entire

but there is still a great need to involve some fresh thinking into the running of the Association as well as the Hall itself. In the two months we have visited many of the regular which take

at the Hall. The members of these groups have by ideas for the site more user-friendly which will be collated into a "wish list" and will be discussed at the

& Finance Committees in

The main thrust of this month's article is to consider the Hall fabric and maintenance programme. Of the "guestimated" 40,000 people who come to the site in the course of the year how many a thought to the maintenance and presentation of the building (other than when something gaes wrong!)

6

At the AGM of the association in March, ordinary SCA those who have paid their SUbscription (and who also bothered to turn up), elected three groups to run the Association. One of these is the Building Committee and from its members a chairman is elected. For many years there has been little in this group and the honour (?) of it's chairman has fallen to Anthony Tonkin. The Association has been, and served by Anthony and his team who between them many hours at the HaJi in the course of a year. Just think how high our hire charges would have to be if we had to employ professional and trade personnel to carry out all the jobs that need to be done. Even a broken window, probably two or three times a month, involves a visit to th.e Hall Anthony to assess the prior to calling a glazing firm, while minor repairs such as toilet cistern overflows are by one of the team. AI the same lime we are by our

licence to meet many parameters on public and keeping an eye on such as emergency lighting, exit and doors all fal~ to the Building Committee. Gas, electrical and fire safety must also be observed and all the official requirements upon

local authorities have to be v""""u.~~ to.

lf we consider the work we have to into our own houses to the maintenance up to standard, we should be amazed at the size of the task when comparing the relative dimensions of the Hall. We have a large and one that is set to grow of which in another article). We are approaching the season of slack Hall usage and an assessment has been made of the rooms that need decorating attention thls

Page 7: aldoN ODUDuuity l!iUlii4Xiation 2001.pdf · Association & Other News - List of S.C.A. Contacts Hon Secretary SCA Mrs SHarrow 0117 986 6038 SCAN Distribution Stan Hamblin 01225 872389

Summer. Help is always acceptable and the programme is master-minded by Anthony Tonkin and Ray Moore, other members of the Building Committee acting as foremen on decorating days. Please consider helping. You could ring 872479 or 872080 to find out more about when and where. It's easy to complain when something is found to be out of place, untidy or dirty, but in such heavily used premises the practical solution must be to get involved and help solve some of the problems. As they used to say in the Electricity Supply Industry "many bands make light work!"

STOP PRESS! The Saltford Centre Steering Group, comprising four members each from the SCA and Saltford Sports Club, continue their series of meetings to consider development and extension of t.he

site . They are working towards a date in September when plans can be presented to the general membership for approval, following which formal planning applications can be made and financial grant sources explored. This is an exciting idea for the site and for Salt ford generally so be prepared to find out more and have your say .

News for Young People

Following the example of the Parish Council who are endeavouring to provide facilities for those youngsters who seem at a loose end by gathering around our Hall premises, new initiatives are being explored to find ways of keeping them occupied. In a really practical step the Short Mat Bowls Club have started a class for young people and were encouraged by the response at the first session. SALTFORD PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Clerk - P. Godfrey, 489, Bath Road, Saltford, Bristol BSJI JBA Tel: 4(}()()58

RE-APPOINTMENT OF CHAIRMAN AND VICE CHAIRMAN Cllr Maurice Short and Cllr Mrs Julia Scott have been re-elected Chairman and Vice Chairman respectively of Salt ford Parish Council at our meeting held in St Mary's Church Hall on 1st May 2001 WEDMORE ROAD GARAGES The garages were discussed with a representative from Somer Housing on I st May. They are in a very poor condition not having been attended to for years yet rentals have vastly increased. There is also a discrepancy over rates for private and Council rental charges, the former having V AT added. It was reported that out of 800 garages owned by Somer Housing in the B&NES area, only 300 were in actual use. CAR PARK OUTSIDE SHOPS Concern has been raised that this area is still being used by cars being parked' long term' causing annoyance to those who just wish to use the car park to pop into the shops/surgery/restaurant for a few minutes and it is being considered whether this ought to be monitored for a period. NEW PARISH CLERK APPOINTMENT Following the resignation of Madeleine Sobey who bas served as Clerk for the last five years, Peter Godfrey (ex subpostmaster of Salt ford Post Office) bas taken over from the I st May. Please treat him kindly for the first few months and then you can get your own back! The Parish Council thanks Madeleine for all her hard work over the last five years and wishes her well for the future. COUNCaLORSSURGE~ These are continuing - the next one being from lOam to 12 noon on Saturday 28th July in the Parish Council office at t.he rear of Davies and Way. Please feel free to pop in and express your concerns/delights for the benefit of all in Saltford. POOP-SCOOPS have been purchased by the Council and are available from the office between the hours of9am to 3pm on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday on a first come first served basis . Will dogs please bring their owners with them when collecting these throw-away-in-tbe-bin freebies . COST OF V ANDALlSM This is regrettably an item that has to be regularly taken into account these days and this Parish Council is no exception. Recently it has been necessary to bring in heavy lifting gear to replace and repair the new sundial in the Memorial Gardens. Did anyone see it being moved or damaged? This is all un-necessary expense when the money being used to repair it could have been put to a more worthwhile purpose for the benefit of the village. If you do see or hear of other damage in and around our village please inform the clerk on 01225 400058 OVERHANGING TREES AND HEDGES These can be so annoying to pedestrians so please take a serious look at your properties and snip back that overgrowth thus allowing people to pass by admiring your property rather than cussing it. All property owners have a legal responsibility for their own vegetation. - Peter Godfrey, Saltford Parish Clerk 400058

PARISH COUNCil RECYCLING NEWS

In the local newspaper Bath Star recently there appeared an advertisement recommending Natural Nappy Week to raise awareness about the environment impact of nappies and ensure parents have a fair choice. It highlighted the fact that disposables contained chemicals and materials that might have an effect on the environment and the concerns about possible health risks from some of them. Over 8 million disposables are used in Britain every day, most are discarded in the household waste, 94% end up in land fill sites and some parts take up to 500 years to decompose. They recommend that you consider using linen nappies estimated to save £400 - £1000 for your first child; join a local real nappy network, or Real Nappy Association.

Saltford Evening W.1. The April meeting heard a fascinating talk on Lace and its history by Mrs Flux and everyone enjoyed seeing her precious samples and examples of various types of the craft. A most interesting visit to the Police H.Q. at Portishead was arranged during April by one of our own members. We saw many facets of police work and behjnd the scenes details . In May the meeting started with a discussion on the resolutions to be put forward at the National General meeting. These resolutions are always interesting and after discussion our delegate was instructed how to vote . Later Alice Frere was congratulated on her success at Bath Flower Show -gaining I st prize in the class for lace and 3rd prize for a picture using gold thread . The Denman bursary worth £100 has been awarded to loan Butler. A walk at Stourhead was planned for 24th May and a lively Beetle Drive ended an interesting evening. Next Meeting: 12th lune at Saltford Hall at 7.3Opm. The speaker will be Denise lames on "Waste Management". The Sales table will be Garden produce.
