The Programme collaborates with African partner universities and hospitals to:• Identify Fellows from countries with high child mortality rates, as well as the specifi c needs of their home country;

• Enhance the training programme to ensure specialists are trained for the African context;

• Create a network of paediatric doctors on the continent to increase retention of specialists in Africa; and

• Actively support Fellows once they’ve graduated.

In Africa, 5 children under-fi ve die every minute, resulting in Africa having the highest under-fi ve mortality rate in the world. More than half of these deaths are due to preventable and treatable causes such as Pneumonia, which alone causes almost 500 000 child deaths in the region each year. Other leading causes include diarrhoea, pre-term disorders and severe acute malnutrition.

One of the factors contributing to these high numbers is a severe shortage of qualified paediatricians and paediatric sub-specialists in African countries. African paediatric doctors usually receive training from institutions that are outside the continent, where there are more training programmes available, and they either never return or return to home countries with training that is ill-suited for the African patient and setting.

Poor Child Health Care in Africa

The UKZN African Paediatric Fellowship Programme (APFP) was launched with the aim of training doctors from peer African universities in specialist and sub-specialist paediatric health care. The programme’s main objective is to increase the number of paediatric doctors on the continent, resulting in an improvement of care and treatment of sick children and subsequent reduction of preventable child deaths in Africa. The University of KwaZulu-Natal is one of three world-class training sites for the programme, with others being the University of Cape Town (Cape Town) and University of Witwatersrand (Johannesburg).

UKZN Fellows undergo specialised training at the UKZN Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, in collaboration with paediatric sub-specialties at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital and General Paediatrics at UKZN Teaching Hospitals. These institutions offer a patient profi le and setting that is similar to what fellows will fi nd in their home countries. The specialities offered by the programme include: Cardiology; Critical Care; Developmental Paediatrics; Infectious Diseases; Neonatology; Neurology; Nephrology; Haematology/Oncology; Rheumatology; Pulmonology; and General Paediatrics.

A Truly African Solution

UKZN can offer various profi le-raising opportunities to donors who substantially invest in this project, which include: media coverage and publicity in reports, website and publications of UKZN and UKZN Foundation.

Benefi ts for Donors

The Paediatric and Child Health Department currently supports the undergraduate training programme which has an intake of 250 students and graduates more than 200 students per year. The Department undertakes sub-specialist training across 9 disciplines and offers a Master’s in Medical Sciences (MMedSci), which has a 100% research thesis weighting.

The Department has had numerous achievements:• Successfully hosted the inaugural UKZN Paediatrics and

Paediatric Surgery (UPPS) Congress, which was attended by paediatricians from private and public hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal.

• A number of staff members have been invited topresent research and chair sessions at various local and international conferences.

• Awarded ‘Best Department’ prize at Nelson R MandelaSchool of Medicine in 2016 for the 2nd year in a row.

About the UKZN Paediatrics Department

The UKZN Paediatrics Department received a multi-year educational grant to initiate this programme at UKZN.

We are seeking additional funders to ensure the longevity and sustainability of the training programme in order to succeed in reducing child morbidity and mortality. Partners can provide support by making general donations to the programme or fi nancing the training of a student.
