Context
Paradigm change in ocean studies.Multiplatforms observing systems are combined with forecasting numerical models in response to science
and society needs.

Satellite products have various applications
– Examples (not exhaustive!):

Challenge– Observing the ocean synoptically in space and time (e.g. from
minutes to months) at global scale in a cost-eective way and long term run.– NEED for a Coordinated observation data: Constellation of SmallSats + Combination
of in-situ robotic capabilities will considerably boost the study of the oceans, provide synoptic views potentially close to real-time (Guerra et al., 2016)
– Detection of targeted features by satellite for driving robotic assets in situ.– To feed numercial models with collected observations for forcasting (opeartional
oceanography)– Application: climate change, security, monitoring of the ocean (e.g. plume, front,
currents, SST, sea surface elevation), detection of harmfull events (e.g. anoxic zones, harmfull Algal bloom), maritime traffic, . . . .

BLUEMED– research and innovation initiative for blue jobs
and growth in the Mediterranean area I– List of strategic actions potentially linked with Skywin activities.
– Develop new ideas for robotic systems and devices to explore and work on the seabed in deep-sea areas
– Develop new technologies and systems to enable spatial and temporal resolution and observation parameters to be improved in the coastal region (using both in situ and remote tools).
– Develop advanced concept of robotic systems for submarine archaeology.– Develop and market environmental sensors to assess human impact and implement the Marine
Strategy Framework Directive.

BLUEMED– Develop Unmanned Autonomous Vehicles and related infrastructure that
can extend the area - on the sea surface and underwater – for different types of operation, e.g. monitoring illegal activities, supporting search and rescue activities, helping the Civil Protection service respond to disasters, supporting offshore economic activities.
– Develop tailor-made technologies to improve eciency on installations for the exploitation of marine renewable energies (wind, current and waves).
– Take advantage of retrieved data and information to create a Virtual Museum of Mediterranean Submarine Archaeology.
