2 August 2011 The Ultimate Insider

It is my great pleasure to be providing this update to you as part of UMA’s first newsletter. It does not seem very long ago that UMA was just a single campus in Clearwater. Today, we have expanded to include a large campus in Tampa, an Online school with over 5,000 students and an office in Miami where the newest member of the UMA team in our CCM unit are focusing on Continuing Medical Education (CME) conferences for physicians. All of this growth has been a result of the efforts of the talented network of over 900 UMA staff and online instruc-tors who now span across the United States. And, through your dedication to empower our students so that they can succeed in their educational endeav-ors, over 7,000 students have successfully completed an educational program at UMA. This is something we can all be truly proud of.

In the midst of the growth that we are experiencing and the regulatory changes in our industry, I get asked “what is most important to me?” My focus for the school has not changed. No matter how many students, employees, or locations we have, how much growth and change we experience, the executive team and I are committed to making the business decisions needed for UMA to remain true to its Mission. In order to make needed improvements and meet particular goals, certain elements that support our Mission may require more focus from time to time than others. We will not always achieve every goal and we will make mis-takes along the way. However, we are committed to continuous improvement, correcting our mistakes and building a culture where high achievement, both for ourselves and our students, is the norm.

We are focused on changing and improving from a highly successful start-up to an outstanding mid-size organization. To that point, on August 5th, we brought UMA’s full team of Directors, Senior Directors, and Vice Presidents together in order to identify and address opportunities for improvement in the following ar-eas: Student Success, Commitment to Our People, Compliance, Organizational Excellence, and the UMA Brand. During that meeting, working groups were as-signed to each of these areas and I look forward to the actions from these groups in helping to accelerate our development.

We are committed to making UMA an outstanding workplace. An organization where we continue to create an environment of mutual respect that foster’s cre-ativity and personal development so that each of you are empowered to provide our students with a superior educational experience. The path toward achieving this includes the investments we are making in leadership development, prod-uct training, employee health initiatives, and improvements to our operating structure, processes, systems, and policies. The executive team and I are also focused on improving communications and the spirit of collaboration across de-partments. This newsletter is just one related initiative.

There will be more to follow in coming months.

Dear Team UMA,

As you know from our last company-wide meeting, one of our key corporate goals for 2011 is to increase revenue diversity. We have been working on several strategic projects related to our revenue diversification goal and I am excited to inform you that UMA has just completed the acquisition of Com-plete Conference Management (CCM), www.ccmcme.com, a company based in Miami that offers Continuing Medical Education (CME) training to doctors.

CCM has approximately 15 staff and presents over a dozen conferences per year with a focus on cardiovascular and vascular medicine. CCM is accred-ited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and generates revenue from three sources: grants from medical device com-panies, conference attendees (physicians) and exhibitors (primarily medical device companies). By integrating CCM into our business, we enable UMA to expand into a new market within the healthcare vertical where we can branch out into other, complementary training activities and open up new opportunities for non-Title IV revenues.

The CCM team also benefits as a new part of the UMA family, from UMA’s marketing expertise to technology resources. While CCM will remain based in Miami, we have planned an upcoming visit next month for their staff to tour our facilities in Tampa and meet with key members of our team. Please join me in welcoming CCM into the UMA family and stay tuned for further updates!

The Tampa campus sponsors several student clubs dedicated to support the Tampa Bay community. The Pharmacy Tech Club, Mighty Meds is sponsored by Amy Pauley, Instructor at the Tampa Campus. Since the club first launched in April 2011, Mighty Meds has raised $300 in fundraisers such as bake sales and jeans day. All proceeds were donated to Shriner’s Hospital. Due of the success of the fundraisers, Mighty Meds is planning to have a jeans day the first Thursday and Sat-urday of each month for the remainder of this calendar year. As they continue to grow, they will be donating their proceeds to additional organizations.

The Super Care Techs Club is the MCLA, PCT, NA & Phle-botomy Club sponsored by Rachel Gebo, Instructor at the Tampa Campus. In May, the Super Care Techs par-ticipated in and raised $250 for the Relay for Life Walk which is an organization through the American Cancer Society. Most recently in July, they raised $300 and UMA donated $250 for the Kiss for Pink event where all proceeds were donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Monthly club members volunteer their time to provide free dental screenings to various elementary schools. This regular event is a great way for students to give back to the community and an excellent way to expose our students to their future career in dental health-care. In March, The Choppers staffed UMA’s Wild Splash Booth to promote the dental program.

Maximum Exposure is the Basic X-Ray Club sponsored by Jamie Martin, Instructor at the Tampa Campus. In April, the club participated in the Walk for Autism for Autism Speaks. Maximum Exposure is planning an event for Breast Cancer Awareness in late September. They are also excited about the State Conference for X-Ray Techs which selected students will get the op-portunity to attend. In November, they are planning to sponsor a Radiology Education Event.

We are proud of all of the events and donations our clubs have raised for the community and are looking forward to their future success.

The first UMA Online “Meet and Greet” held at Whiskey Joe’s on Saturday, August 13, 2011 went off without a hitch. Among many were, Sr. VP Derek Apanovitch and Director Joe Piechura who came out to speak to online students within a 75 mile radius of the Tampa Bay area. This was an opportunity for the students to meet the SVP and Campus Director (Derek Apanovitch) , the Learner Services Director (Joe Piechura Jr.), Online instruc-tors, Learner Services Advisors, and a Career Services rep. It was a great event!

UMA ONLINE “MEET AND GREET”

We are excited to announce the beginning of a Health and Wellness program called Ultimate Healthy Living. As an industry leader in health education, UMA is committed to ensure its employees have the oppor-tunity to enhance their own health and/or lifestyle based around individual interests and needs.

This program will provide information on various health topics, promote participation in health events, and support more opportunities to exercise. In ad-dition to expanding the current UMA athletics team, we will phase in opportunities over the course of the year for employees to participate in health related seminars, discounted gym memberships, and interof-fice health challenges.

Prospective goals for Ultimate Healthy Living include employee access to healthcare and fitness profes-sionals as well as readily available healthy snack op-tions. Keep an eye out for an employee survey aiming to gather specific employee interests and a series of introductory training classes.

We look forward to your survey feedback and partici-pation in the training classes as we launch Ultimate Healthy Living!

Learner Services Hits a Home Run On June 9th the Learner Services Department attended the baseball game between the Tampa Yankees & Clear-water Threshers as a team-building night out for the entire Department. Some of the highlights were our own Learner Services Advisor, Syreeda Battle singing the National Anthem and Sr. VP Derek Apanovitch throwing out the ceremonial first-pitch. More than 50 people attended, all wearing their favorite baseball gear to get in the spirit. They had a great time, and enjoyed getting to spend some time together outside of work! All in all, the event was a home-run!

UMA Financial Literacy Update

Over the last few months UMA has been focusing on implementing financial literacy into the coursework for all of our students. Both ground and online programs have implemented one or more of USA-Funds (United Student Aids Funds) financial literacy courses into the TBLS platform. It is expected that this partnership with USA-Funds will allow UMA to provide an enhanced Life-skills learning course to its students with a focus on student financial management.

We are very excited to provide this additional assistance to our stu-dents and we are confident these courses will greatly enhance our student knowledge of financial aid awareness and help them during their enrollment at UMA.

The establishment of the OPFAR Department (Office of Personal Fi-nance & Alumni Relations) in early 2011 has been instrumental coor-dinating debt management activities and financial literacy initiatives for UMA and we are excited about the future expected progress.

Tommy SimsSenior Director of OPFAR

UMA’s success is highly dependent upon our employ-ees and their continued improvement of professional skills. Active participation in a professional organiza-tion is an effective way to stay current with skills and trends in a specific profession. Robert Alderson, one of the project managers in UMA’s Project Manage-ment Office, is active in the local chapter of the Proj-ect Management Institute (PMI). Many people join the PMI primarily to earn the training hours needed to stay qualified as a PMP (Project Management Profes-sional), but Robert also volunteers as Director of Aca-demic Outreach. The Academic Outreach program is intended to help educate students about a career in project management. So far this year, Robert has spo-ken to students at DeVry University and the University of Tampa. “I think that students benefit from hearing about a career from somebody who is actually active in that field,” said Robert.

Later this year, Robert will be working on the PMI’s contribution to the Great American Teach In. “People often do not understand what a project manager does – even though it is one of the fastest growing profes-sions. So we decided to reach out to younger chil-dren to teach them about this promising – but little understood – career possibility.” The Great American Teach In is a national program that encourages parents and other members of the community to go into K-12 schools and talk about their jobs. Robert is hoping to organize about 20 project managers to present infor-mation about their careers at local schools. “Many of my high school friends are now in project management careers. But when we were in high school none of us knew about this career. I want to help the students of today be fully informed about their career options.”

UMA & THE COMMUNITY

Military & Government Affairs Brief Summary:

In honor of the United States Coast Guard’s 221st birthday, the Clearwater Regional Cham-ber of Commerce hosted a Birthday Party at Air Station Clearwater last Thursday.

The Clearwater US Coast Guard Station is the largest and busiest Coast Guard air station in the country.

The U.S. Coast Guard 221st birthday event was a great success and served as a forum to interact with local officials and network with other area businesses. It also offered the opportunity to discuss UMA’s military friendly programs with some active duty military personnel. It was a successful “brand building” opportunity. (Kevin Crews, Operations Data Analyst, attended on behalf of UMA Military & Government Affairs). Invitation below:

“Career Services did mock interviews with me until I was comfortable, and the very next interview I had, I got the job. UMA is very passionate about getting you work when you finish.”-Bessie DaneMedical Billing and Coding Graduate

“I like my teachers best at UMA. Oh my teachers were just phenomenal. I had the best teachers. If anyone can teach anything, it was my professors—all of them were excel-lent.”-April WatfordMedical/Clinical Laboratory Assistant

“When I started at UMA, the first thing I thought was, am I crazy? Everything was going over my head and I did not understand anything. I didn’t know if it was really right for me. After a week though, everything started falling into place, and everything took off from there. It’s been great.”-Tom SissonPatient Care Technician

JOKE OF THE MONTH

Family Tradition

The Smith family was proud of their family tradition. Their an-cestors had come to America on the Mayflower. They had in-cluded Senators and Wall Street wizards.

They decided to compile a family history, a legacy for their children and grandchildren. They hired a fine author. Only one problem arose - how to handle that great-uncle George, who was executed in the electric chair.

The author assured the family he could handle the story as tact-fully as possible and was given the go-ahead to write the book.

The book was completed. It read “Great-uncle George occupied a chair of applied electronics at an important government insti-tution and was attached to his position by the strongest of ties. His death came as a great shock”.

Q² (Quick Quiz)

1. Who is FAPSC?2. What does FAPSC do?3. Why and how does UMA support FAPSC?4. Can I be a member?5. How can I find out more about FAPSC?

ANSWERS:

1. Florida Association of Postsecondary Schools and Colleges2. Provides Leadership, Support and Advocacy for Quality Career Education for

Florida’s Career Schools and Colleges which includes over 800 licensed, pri-vate career schools and colleges and serving over 379,000 students. FAPSC schools offering training in over 200 occupations from business to nursing, and providing training relevant to careers like a world class chef or law en-forcement officers.. FAPSC helps Floridians achieve their dreams. (Right down our alley, huh?)

3. UMA supports FAPSC because we understand the value of strength in num-bers. Though member schools may compete in their markets, we still share a common goal—the goal of serving an often underserved population, being responsive to the needs of employers, training in high-demand fields, and in strengthening Florida’s occupational outlook. As for the how, UMA is in-volved with FAPSC in several ways—we are represented on the FAPSC board of Directors where we co-chair the Education Committee and two annual conferences; we are an Eagle member of the FAPSC Political Action Commit-tee (PAC) which keeps us active in legislative issues in Florida that might im-pact our schools, our staff and our students; we attend Hill Day in Tallahas-see annually to personally lobby for issues like equal treatment and equal access for our students , transferability of credits and other education and funding issues; and we send our faculty and administrators to conferences to share “best practices” and to play an active role in our sector.

4. UMA is a member as an institution, but FAPSC also has individual member-ships and opportunities to serve on committees both state wide and in Re-gion VII—the region covering the greater Bay Area.

The UMA Cares website provides a phone and email service directory for both ground and online students who need to reach out to a specific department for assistance, such as Learner Services, Student Finance, Technical Support, or Ca-reer Services. Also provided is the information for the Attendance hotline for ground students, and Emergen-cy Alerts information where students can call or link to the website providing information on the campuses in the event of a hurricane or other emergency situa-tions.

Additionally, a dedicated UMA Cares phone line and email has been established for any student or staff

member who feels that an issue they have faced in UMA did not receive the appropriate attention, and would like to escalate the situation with a Resolu-tion Specialist. Through UMA Cares, Ultimate Medi-cal Academy is making strides towards improving how students are informed about and access services. The site can be accessed through the “Contact Us” link at www.ultimatemedical.edu, or directly at www.uma-cares.com. Also, in development is a link inside the LMS to improve online student access to the site’s in-formation.
