It has been an outstanding start to the year and there have been so many dynamic and innovative events

occurring at Brisbane Water Secondary College Umina Campus. It is certainly a dynamic place to learn with

so many exciting things happening at the campus. These include:

The annual Yr. 6 Parent Information Evening was held last week and was also very well received.

Highly professional videos outlining the features of the College and PBL were launched on the

evening and had parents amazed at the outstanding opportunities provided on the campus. The

videos created by teachers Shane Emmett, Ben Ross and Kieran Lawler can be viewed on You-

Tube through links found on the schools website. Please promote our outstanding school by show-

ing family and friends the video. I think you will be amazed by the amount of choice and incredible

success our students have had in recent times. The video also shows how lucky our students are

to have such an incredibly dedicated staff who provide such a diverse range of opportunities in an

amazingly safe and supportive environment.

The inaugural Yr. 7 Learning Conference organised by Mrs Smith and Mr Montgomery was held last

Friday. This course looked at providing a range of skills and information to our outstanding Yr. 7

cohort. Areas addressed included motivational speeches on the theme of resilience by Bruce Waia

and Leisl Tesch. Also Umina Campus initiatives such as Focus on Reading and Positive Behaviour

for Learning were also addressed to ensure a consistent message about high expectations was

provided. Initial feedback has been very positive and it is envisaged that these types of learning

initiatives can be expanded upon in 2015 and beyond.

The entire teaching staff has been undertaking training after school in the Focus on Reading

program which will become the core literacy strategy across the campus. Staff have been very

enthusiastic about the program and it will enable staff to have a consistent approach to teaching

reading in the years to come.

Principal’s Report contd.

The Support Unit have been working tirelessly in class and are involved in a range of environmental

program as part of their syllabus. Mrs Leaver, Mrs Martin and Mrs Connolly have been building on

their hard work of previous years and have established a community garden at the back of the

school and will soon establish a feature at the front of the school. Their innovative practices are

wonderful to see and allow even more opportunities for our Support students.

The Agricultural Department have just returned from the prestigious Canberra Royal Show and

achieved amazing results. The next stop is the Royal Easter Show and we wish them every suc-

cess.

Mrs Conn (College Principal), Mrs Smith and I are also conducting a series of parent forums with

our partner primary schools to ascertain community attitudes towards Brisbane Water Secondary

College. From here we can establish the strengths, identify areas for improvement and plan for the

future. I have also been taking primary school parents on guided tours of the school to show what

a calm and innovative learning environment we have. If you know a parent who may be interested

in a tour of the school please tell them to contact me at the school.

There is certainly an amazing amount of exciting opportunities for students at our school.

In other events the school has recently contacted an arborist after the awful events in Pitt Town in which an 8

year old girl was tragically killed after being struck by a falling gum tree branch. The Department of Education

and Communities has directed all schools to ascertain risk and have the trees removed for student safety.

This will unfortunately lead to the removal of 39 trees on our site- but will hopefully ensure that these tragic

events do not occur at our school.

The Umina Campus has also sent out enrolment paperwork to a number of Year 7 students. The reason

behind this decision is that some forms did not contain either the employment status or level of education of

parents. The information obtained here will be held in the strictest confidence- but is very important as it de-

termines the FOEI (Family Occupation and Education Index) and hence the level of funding given to the

school. Every student who returns the completed form to the office receives a free FREDDO FROG to help

the process. Year 8 and 9 will received ghosted enrolment forms shortly to ensure that information retained

on the schools administration system is also accurate.

A reminder of a few dates to note for the future. Parent Teacher Night is on Tuesday April 1st, there is a Staff

Development Day on Monday April 28th and NAPLAN examination (Yr. 7 and 9 only) are May 13th to 16th.

Looking forward to an exciting conclusion to the term.

S. Warren Deputy Principal

Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Community Members, As Term 1 draws to a close can I acknowledge the outstanding start we have had to the year. This year has begun with the majority of students working to their full potential, and as I have moved around the school, I have been amazed at the high standard of work being produced in all classes. This is a credit to our staff and the attitude that our students bring with them from home. Thank you also to parents and students for making such an effort to have the correct uniform (including shoes) throughout this term. As the weather begins to turn, your support in ensuring that the high standards expected by the whole school community are met is greatly appreciated. For Parents and Carers please note that the first Parent Teacher Information Evening is during Week 10 this term, Tuesday 1st April 2014. Bookings can be made through the Parent Portal or by students arranging times with their Teachers.

Finally, a note of concern. I am always thrilled to see our students riding bikes, skateboards and scooters to school. I need to remind all Students, Parents and Carers that Helmets must be worn. We do not wish to stop students riding to school but need all students to protect themselves. Looking forward to a great end of term 1 and ahead for Term 2.

Welcome back to all of our wonderful staff and students and to those new to the team, like myself, I look forward to making this year, 2014, a very successful, positive and high achieving year for all involved. Our school values are RESPECT, COMMITMENT AND RELATIONSHIPS and like every staff member at BWSC, these are three areas we wish for every student to succeed in under the guidance of our dedicated and com-mitted team 3 staff. 7.3.1 Our year 7 students have now settled into the routine of high school life and have already begun to impress many of their teachers with some very impressive efforts in the wide variety of different subjects they now complete each day. It has been pleasing to hear so many positive comments from the students on how much they are enjoying being here at our school and that the transition from primary to middle school has been fun, exciting and not quite as scary as some may have thought it would be. I welcome you all to our team and look forward to seeing you all involved in some way or another in many of the excellent academic, artistic and sporting opportunities we offer here at Brisbane Water Secondary College. 8.3.1 After their first full year of high school our 8.3.1 class now moves into their second year, I am sure full of confi-dence, experience and an even greater desire to further their education with us here at BWSC. All students have the potential to excel in the many subjects they undertake and I have already witnessed some excellent work from most of the students. Many demonstrate great leadership qualities which exemplifies their hard work and dedication to completing their class work to a high standard and to the best of their ability. In our new positive behaviour for learning (PBL) course the students have demonstrated that they have a deep understanding for what positive behaviour is and how they can use it to earn the respect of their teachers and their peers. I wish every student a successful year and look forward to seeing the best qualities of this class shine throughout the year. 9.3.1 Our young leaders, our role models, and the senior students of our team. With such status comes an even greater responsibility and it is to our students in 9.3.1 that we as staff expect to lead and be shining examples to our younger students in year 7 and 8. We are lucky to have a group of students who have already shown that with positive, mature, behaviour comes success and respect. A big shout out to Rohan Maunder for his playground heroics as he dealt with a rare occurrence of playground bullying. It shows that the message in our school is clear, bullying will not be tolerated here and as a school we can all work together in eliminating it! It will be a big year for year 9 with mock interviews, graduation ceremony, ½ yearly exams, yearly exams and NAPLAN so to every student I say, be prepared, be organised and be smart. Have a great year and make every moment memorable and always remember your teachers are there to support you, guide you and most importantly educate you to become successful members of our fine community here on the Peninsula. Yours in Education! Mr M. Dixon Assistant Team Leader Team 3

Barista Course A successful day was again achieved at the Ourimbah Campus. Twenty students completed the very popular Barista Course last month. Students will be awarded their certificates during assembly in the next few weeks. A special thanks to Ms. Peyser who es-corted and supervised the students on the day. There will only be one more Barista course on offer this year through the school and it will be in May. For more information please look at 'Careers and Transition' on our school website. Careers Classes Students are settling into the careers classes and many have already taken advantage of the structured classes by submitting tax file application forms and surfing our school website for information on up-coming courses. Students do need to keep in mind that there will only be two Barista and two Whitecard courses held through the school. Both of these courses are in March and are again repeated in May. Students must also remember to hand in permission notes and payments by the due date, as all of these excursions have limited availability. All information is available on our school website. I would also like to encourage students and parents to download our smart phone Ap and find our school on Facebook so that you can all keep up to date with activities promoted and organised for students throughout the year.

Parent and teacher night April 1

Parents may wish to make an appointment with the schools career advisor, Ms. Nerrida Lewis.

Time can be allocated to discuss the following;

How to access the Careers section off our school website

What's on offer for students for 2014

What taster TAFE courses exist

And useful websites that can help both the parent and student explore career options and pathways.

Thanks Mrs. Lewis

Dear Parents,

Welcome to first term. Your children are very busy in English classes composing posters, speeches and

essays.

Year Seven are required to compose a poster. This poster needs to support a theme from the novel they

have been reading in class. They will need to incorporate literary and visual devices. Students are choos-

ing from themes such as friendship, discrimination, bullying, resiliency and accepting others. This is a

complex task as students must display an understanding of poetic devices and illustration techniques.

Year Eight are composing a three to five minute speech which they will present to their class. This speech

relates to the themes of the novel they have been studying and will be an excellent opportunity for them to

improve their public speaking ability. Public speaking is an essential skill required by many HSC subjects.

Year Nine are embarking on essay composition as a conclusion to a diligent study of poetry written by

Aboriginal poet Oodgeroo of the tribe Noonuccal.

We are expecting some brilliant work samples as students have displayed intelligent and creative re-

sponses to their focus texts.

For your interest we have included a variety of quotes and statistics from famous people and organisations

about our topic focuses for this term. Read and enjoy.

Visual Literacy:

The ability to look at visual information with perception. A visually literate person understands how visual

elements contribute to the meaning of the whole. –PBS Media Literacy Glossary (www.pbs.org/weta/

myjourneyhome/teachers/glossary.html)

―Visual literacy requires the students be able to both ‗read‘ and ‗write‘ visual language. In other words, the

students learn to analyze and interpret visual information and create and compose their own meaningful

forms of visual communication.‖ –Theron Lund and Rob Poole, ―A Visual Literacy Lesson for Art and

Visual literacy in the classroom has become increasingly important as more and more information is ac-

cessed through technology. Students must maintain the ability to think critically and visually about the

images presented to them in today‘s society. –Timothy Gangwer, Visual Impact, Visual Teaching: Using

Year 9 Sport Surfing for sport is RAD and COOL!! All the students have SO MUCH FUN!!

This term the students have surfed or learnt to surf, battled each other in handball tournaments, played beach and water frisbee, enjoyed a casual game of beach footy, participated in skim ball competitions, chatted to the lifeguards and had a great time on the sand and in the water.

―It‘s great to go to the beach and be active,‖ commented one student. Be a grom, go surfing!!!!

Canberra Royal Cattle Show 2014 In late February this year 18 students 2 steers and 1 heifer travelled to Canberra to participate in the

Canberra Royal Agricultural Show.

All students who attended are to be congratulated on their enthusiasm in the preparation of cattle for the

show and on their outstanding conduct throughout the show where, despite some very challenging

weather, excellent showmanship was displayed. This year we camped next to St Johns College, Dubbo

who our school has had a long standing relationship with and many students enjoyed re-kindling old friend-

ships formed throughout previous show experiences. On Tuesday afternoon Mr Ben Toll from St Johns ran

a cattle judging clinic for the schools which was beneficial for many students from both colleges.

We see the BWSC cattle program as an opportunity for many student‘s to gain important interpersonal

skills and confidence as well as obvious practical skills. We would like to thank all of our cattle breeders for

their on-going support as well as our sponsors Woy Woy and Umina Rotary Clubs for enabling this pro-

gram to continue. We are also thankful to Mr Kevin Smith and Mrs Dixie Brown for their voluntary participa-

tion in assisting at the show.

SUPPORT UNIT NEWS

We have been very busy in the Support Unit since the start of the new year, settling in new students and getting to know each other. We have so far been involved in Clean Up Australia Day and we have had a very successful BBQ to raise money for a new iPad for our class.

Sydney Coastrek 2014 We would like to send out a BIG ‗thankyou‘ to all of you who supported us

on our trek to restore sight - supporting the awesome work of The Fred

Hollows Foundation.

We were part of ‗Team F&F‘, who were ‗Rocking the 50k Day‘ from Palm

Beach to Balmoral on Friday the 28th of February.

To those who donated money- THANKYOU!

We exceeded our target which was fantastic! - We have a new appreciation for those

who work tirelessly to fundraise for such worthy causes.

To those who sent us constant messages of support, either verbally,

through FB, texting or emails- THANKYOU!

You have no idea how much your encouragement kept us going.

Despite the rain, a sore foot and a sore knee, we crossed the finish line in

just under 12 hours and would do it all again. Kris & Erika

―BWSC is very different to rural Victoria and Queensland and to teaching

African and Caribbean ESL students in South London.

―Wherever you are, it‘s always good to see students make progress.‖

BECOMING a permanent staff member is a coming home for History and

Geography graduate Talara Freeman. Miss Freeman has worked as a

tutor, teacher‘s aide and Aboriginal dance teacher at both campuses and

completed her last practicum at the Umina campus. She grew up on the

Central Coast and attended St Scholastica‘s in Glebe on an Aboriginal

academic scholarship before finishing her HSC at Wadalba Community

College.

Miss Freeman values the support of the staff and the local community.

She is teaching classes in teams 6, 1 and 8.

―Eventually, I would like to work towards teaching the entire campus about

Aboriginal culture. I will encourage staff and provide resources to imple-

ment Indigenous culture in all areas, such as games in PE, art and stories in English.‖

―I would love to follow all of my year 7 students through to year 12 and cry at their graduation. I hope that I

am here forever.‖

INTRODUCING TEAM SIXCESSFUL STUDENTS …

NICOLE DELOS SANTOS, 761

THE VARIETY of subjects at high school and the chance to

make new friends has made year 7 an enjoyable experi-

ence for 12-year-old Nicole.

Nicole, who arrived six months ago from the Philippines,

has embraced the learning experiences on offer and the

opportunity to try new activities both at school and in the

community.

―I have had some swimming lessons and am learning how

to do roller-blading.‖

She is happy to be extended academically.

―I would say to someone in year 6 to just do their best.‖

TYSON JACOB, 961

THE team system at BWSC stands out for Tyson as a positive

structure at BWSC.

―It‘s a change from other schools and it‘s safer because your

team leader has time to deal with problems.‖

Tyson has been part of the rugby union team with Mr Hunter

and appreciates the sporting opportunities he has had since

year 7.

He is setting his sights on carpentry as a career like his

grandfather and is extremely positive about his opportunities.

―Every day is a new day. You definitely shouldn‘t say negative things about yourself.‖

JASON FAWCETT, 861

BEING a member of the year 8 rugby league elective is one of the

bonuses of attending BWSC for talented sportsman Jason.

Jason holds the 2013 Australian boxing title in his weight range and,

because of his boxing commitments, is unable to play league out of

school time.

―I really like to play league at school. I play at lunchtime, and the team

goes away to tournaments with Mr Crouch.‖
