SOUTHBOUND UMKC women’s basketball heads south to play in the Fun in the Sun Tournament in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The Kangaroos will take on the Western Kentucky Lady Hilltopers in the first round on Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004 at 8 p.m. CST. LAST TIME OUT Megan Mahoney scored 13 of her game high 15 points in the second half as the No. 22 Kansas State Wildcats defeated the UMKC Kangaroos 63-31, in Municipal Auditorium on Saturday (Dec. 11). A UMKC single-game record crowd of 2,611 witnessed the game. UMKC jumped out to a 3-0 on a free throw by sophomore guard Jowan Ortega and a layup by junior center Liz Obrecht. After a 5-5 tie, Kansas State took the lead on a Shana Wheeler jumper and never trailed again. LAST TIME OUTMegan Mahoney scored 13 of

her game high 15 points in the secondhalf as the No. 22 Kansas StateWildcats defeated the UMKC Kangaroos63-31, in Municipal Auditorium on Saturday(Dec. 11). A UMKC single-game record crowd of 2,611witnessed the game.

court. Since the 1,500-seat on-campus facility opened to the public in1987, UMKC has fashioned an 82-67 (.550) all-time record. TheKangaroos are 15-10 (.600) at Swinney over the last three seasons.

SCORING FROM DOWNTOWNThe Kangaroos play two regular season games this year at his-

toric Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City. UMKCsports a 31-19 (.633) all-time record in games played at theAuditorium. The last win for the Kangaroos at MunicipalAuditorium was an 82-46 victory over Texas State on Dec. 18,2003.

THE SERIESU M K C trails the series with both Western Kentucky and

Memphis, 0-1 and 0-4 respectively. The last meeting with the LadyHilltopers was a 82-40 loss on January 16, 1994 in Bowling Green,Kentucky. The last meeting with the Tigers was on November 23,2001, a 71-43 loss in Memphis. The Kangaroos lead the series withOral Roberts 15-9 and won both contests last season.

BO OVERTON Head Coach, First Season (Oklahoma ‘83)

Bo Overton, a former assistant basketball coach at the University of Oklahoma, was named women's basketball coachat UMKC June 7, 2004.

Prior to his appointment at UMKC, Overton spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Oklahoma, where the Soonerscompiled a 143-54 record. During Overton's tenure, Oklahoma won three Big 12 Conference regular season titles. OUalso advanced to the NCAA Tournament five times, including an appearance in the 2002 NCAA NationalChampionship game.

Overton, the starting point guard for the Sooners in the early 1980s, is considered one of the top recruiters in thecountry. The native of Ada, Okla., worked with all phases of the Oklahoma women's basketball program.

Overton began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for the Oklahoma men's basketball program in 1983-84,followed by a year each as an assistant coach with the Continental Basketball Association's Pensacola (Fla.) Tornadoes(1985-86) and Oral Roberts University (1987-88). He then landed his first head coaching position at Murray StateJunior College in Tishomingo, Okla. After a two-year stay at MSJC, Overton returned to Oral Roberts to assist coachKen Trickey. He remained with the Golden Eagles for two seasons before accepting an assistant coach position atSouthwest Texas State under current Kansas State men's head coach Jim Wooldridge. Overton's and Wooldridge's work-ing relationship extended over five years and two institutions as the pair teamed up for one year at Southwest Texas andfour years at Louisiana Tech (1994-98).

During his four seasons as a player for the Sooners (1980-83), Overton led the team in assists his final three seasonsand currently ranks third on the school's all-time assists list with 517. He also ranks second on the Sooners' career listin free throw percentage after he converted 85.2 percent of his shots (184-of-216). He concluded his collegiate playingcareer by leading Oklahoma to the NCAA Mideast Regional and a second-place Big Eight Conference finish.

Overton became the 22nd player in OU men's basketball history to be drafted professionally. He was selected by thePhoenix Suns in 1983 NBA Draft.

He was a four-year letterwinner at Ada High School, earning Oklahoma Coaches, Tulsa World and Daily OklahomanPlayer-of-the-Year recognition in 1979. Overton was also a member of the McDonald's and National High SchoolCoaches Association All-America squads. He received the prestigious Jim Thorpe Award in 1979, which is presentedannually to the top athlete in each sport at the Oklahoma state high school championships.

Overton is a 1983 graduate of Oklahoma, earning a bachelor's degree in communications.
