UNC Online Proctoring Network• 12 institutions participate in the UNC Online
proctoring network
• What is the proctoring network?– A unified proctor scheduling system for UNC
• What to know– Services for online/distance education courses– No financial cost to campus/program– Appointments are with pre-approved face-to-face
proctors or taking exams via webcam
UNC Online Proctoring Network
UNC Online Proctoring Network
Why require proctored exams?
• Not mandatory for online courses• But, proctoring helps:
As a preventative measure to
Increase academic integrityby
Identifying distance learning students
Academic Integrity• Proctored exams, as with other methods of
ensuring academic integrity, is a preventative measure
• Nothing is foolproof…
Academic Integrity
• Proctored exams should be used in conjunction with other resources– Post/review campus codes of conduct– Randomize test questions– Know your students– Do not recycle exams– Be alert
A new AI issue…
• Bogus proctors– Students attempt to become proctors– Students invite friends, family members, co-workers
etc…to become proctors• It is not easy to verify proctors
– UNC Online proctors submit an application– Formally agree to guidelines– In the future, independent proctors must pass a
criminal background check
Who are the F2F proctors?
• Approved – Submitted application
• 764 approved proctors– Private, public and limited– Number of approved proctors in flux
• Many located in NC– And growing across the country and globe
Who are the webcam proctors? • ProctorU welcomes site visits• Appointments are real time with live proctors• Proctors are based in ProctorU testing centers • Extensive supervisory and support staff• Proctors receive FERPA and proctor training • Proctors are audited on a regular basis• ProctorU is fully compatible with any LMS• Fees comparable to face-to-face proctoring• Strong student identification process
UNC Online Courses

The system is designed to streamline the registration, credit transfer and tuition calculation
processes between UNC system campuses
UNC Online Courses Search
Who can register for UNC Online courses?
Students currently enrolled as a degree-seeking student at any of the 16 universities* in the UNC system can cross-register for two online courses
per semester through UNC Online.
*UNC Chapel Hill does not fully participate in UNC Online registration. The UNC Online billing and registration process is slightly different for UNC-CH courses.
Do students need to meet with their advisor before registering?
Yes.
Students should meet with their advisor to confirm that the course they want to take from
another institution will count toward their degree program.
How can students register?
It’s easy! They log into UNC Online with their campus credentials to search and register for courses. Let’s take a quick look at the search
feature (http://courses.northcarolina.edu/).
Will my online courses be automatically listed?
Possibly…
There is no separate UNC Online course catalog. All courses are passed into the UNC Online website
directly from each campuses' registration system (Banner or PeopleSoft). The campus decides which
online courses will be imported into UNC Online.
How can I list my course?
If your online course is not listed in UNC Online, and you would like for it to be, contact your department head and registrar to request
for the course to be added to the system.
How will I know if a student registers for my course?
You will receive an automated email message and the student will be listed on your course roster.
How are grades handled?
Grades are handled following the current transfer credit rules of your institution. Generally, as a rule,
grades do not transfer.
The grade at the host school is digitally conveyed automatically to the registrar at the home school,
and they transfer it to the student record in Banner following their policies.
How are students billed? If the student is a full-time UNC system student, there is no
additional charge for courses that they register for through UNC Online (it is covered by the student's tuition just as if they were taking it at their home campus, and there is no ‘billing’ for it from the host school).
If a student is a part-time UNC system student, they will pay the home campus hourly rate for the course, and it will be billed to their home campus. If there is a specific class that a student is interested in, they must check with the school’s registrar to confirm the course rate.
