GENERAL INFORMATION
1. Due date for SPRING 2013 tuition and fees is December 14, 2012. 2. The student is responsible for properly completing the registration process. Incomplete forms or missing paperwork can
result in the student not appearing on the official class list, not receiving a grade, or having problems with billing. 3. All students are encouraged to meet with her/his advisor(s) to discuss course selection. 4. Day program classes are open to all students unless otherwise indicated. Adult Degree (CAP) and Weekend (WEC) courses
are open to traditional students with advisor’s approval. 5. If a cumulative QPA at the end of the last semester was 3.20 or better, a student may take up to twenty (20) credits without
written permission from the Academic Dean. In all other cases, written permission to take more than eighteen (18) credits is required before registration.
6. Independent Study*, Tutorial*, Cross Registration*, and Permission to take Course off Campus* forms must be brought to the Office of the Registrar for processing.
7. For questions about invoices, payment arrangements, bursar holds or financial aid, the student should contact the Student HUB at (412) 578‐6389 or e‐mail [email protected] or [email protected].
*Independent Study An independent study is a course devised by a student that is supervised by a faculty member. It consists of original student research and/or experience and does not duplicate the content and objectives of a course in the university catalog.
*Tutorial A tutorial is a course supervised by a faculty member. It duplicates the number, content, and objectives of a course presently in the university catalog that is not scheduled for this semester.
*Cross Registration After their first semester at Carlow, all full‐time students earning a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher are eligible to register, through Carlow, for one course each semester to be taken at any of the other nine colleges and universities which are members of the Pittsburgh Council on Higher Education, provided the course is open for cross registration and the student has met the prerequisites. The registrant must have the approval of the Academic Advisor and the Registrar. Grades earned through cross registration are posted on the Carlow transcript and counted in the GPA. Students may not repeat courses for which they received a D‐ or above at Carlow for credit or to replace a grade. Students must meet the prerequisites at the host institution. Cross
registration privileges are not available for summer classes. Cross registration forms are available in the Student HUB. Students are responsible for special course or lab fees at the host institution. Academic rules and regulations of the host institution prevail.
*Taking Courses Off Campus After matriculation at Carlow, a Carlow student could be permitted to transfer a maximum of twelve (12) credits from other universities, exclusive of cross‐registration. The student will be required to have permission of the Academic Advisor(s) and the Office of the Registrar before registering for each course.
CHANGE OF REGISTRATION
A student can add or drop from a course by fully completing a Change of Registration form (the “Add/Drop form”). If the student is considered to be First Year, the form must be signed by the student’s advisor(s). Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors may add/drop courses in WebAdvisor without completing a Change of Registration form. If a student is registered for a course, she or he is responsible for paying for it. A student cannot drop a course by simply telling an advisor, an instructor, or a staff member that they intend to do so, or by not attending classes. NOTE: It is recommended that you consult with your academic advisor before adding or dropping courses.
Check deadline dates in the academic calendar for adding or dropping classes.
CLASS ATTENDANCE Students have a responsibility to attend classes for which they have registered. The instructor establishes specific attendance requirements for each course. Students who miss examinations and tests should not assume at they will receive permission to take the examination or test at a later date. For Weekend College (WEC) and Carlow Accelerated Program (CAP) courses, attendance is crucial because of the compressed nature of the courses. University policy states that students missing more than two class meetings of a course will receive a failing grade.
GRADING PROCEDURES End of semester/session grade reports can be accessed on WebAdvisor. Grade reports are not automatically mailed. If you need a paper copy of your grades from the Office of the Registrar you must make that request in writing. You must make the request for each semester/session. You can do this by mail (Carlow University, Student HUB, 3333 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh 15213), fax (412‐578‐6689), or print a request form at https://myportal.carlow.edu/academics/registrar/Pages/RegistrarForms.aspx. Withdrawal from a course must be made officially in the Office of the Registrar by the dates listed in the Academic Calendar. If the student has officially withdrawn in the Office of the Registrar within the prescribed period, “WD” will be indicated on the computerized grade sheet. Grades of students not officially withdrawn by the final withdrawal date who fail to complete the course will be listed by the faculty as “F” or “I” according to the instructor’s evaluation. An Incomplete grade (I) is given to students who have completed at least 75% of the course work, that work is passing, but due to extenuating circumstances have other assignments or evaluations to complete after the final grade is due. The instructor assigns an (I) grade at her or his discretion on the final grade sheet. The student has (6) weeks after the beginning of the next academic semester or CAP session to turn in her or his complete work to the instructor. That instructor then must complete a Change of Grade form and submit it to the Registrar by the designated date. The rating of (I) is automatically changed to (F) by the Registrar if not removed within six (6) weeks after the beginning of the next academic semester or CAP session. After final grades have been submitted to the Office of the Registrar, no grade can be changed unless there has been an error on the part of the faculty member and may be changed only by the faculty member who assigned the grade. In such a case, the faculty member must complete the Change of Grade form in the Office of the Registrar. A student wishing to repeat a course can do so only by repeating the same course at Carlow University. If the student repeats the course, both grades are recorded on the transcript. The grade earned by repeating the course is used to calculate the Cumulative Quality Point Average (QPA). No course may be taken more than three times.

CONFIDENTIALITY OF STUDENT RECORDS (FERPA)
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords students certain rights with respect to their educational records. Students are afforded the right to inspect and review their educational records within 45 days of the day the University receives a request for access. A student should submit to the registrar, dean, head of the academic department, or other appropriate official, a written request that identifies the record(s) the student wishes to inspect. Students may submit their request using this form - https://myportal.carlow.edu/academics/registrar/Documents/FERPA%20Student%20request%20view%20personal%20records.pdf. The University official will make arrangements for access and notify the student of the time and place where the records may be inspected. If the records are not maintained by the University official to whom the request was submitted, that official shall advise the student of the correct official to whom the request should be addressed. Students are afforded the right to request the amendment of their education records that the student believes are inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise in violation of the student’s privacy rights under FERPA. To request an amendment of records, the student should write the University official responsible for the record, clearly identify the part of the record the student wants changed, and specify why it should be changed. If the University decides not to amend the record as requested, the University will notify the student in writing of the decision and the student's right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. Additional information regarding the hearing procedure will be provided to the student when notified of the right to a hearing. Students are afforded the right to provide written consent before the University discloses personally identifiable information from the student’s education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent. The University discloses education records without a student's prior written consent under the FERPA exception for disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a person employed by the University in an administrative, supervisory, academic or research, or support staff position (including law enforcement unit personnel and health staff); a person or company with whom the University has contracted as its agent to provide a service instead of using University employees or officials (such as an attorney, auditor, or collection agent); a person serving on the Board of Trustees; or a student serving on an official committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance committee, or assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibilities for the University. Upon request, the University also discloses education records without consent to officials of another school in which a student seeks or intends to enroll. Students are afforded the right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the University to comply with the requirements of FERPA. The name and address of the Office that administers FERPA is: Family Policy Compliance Office, U.S. Department of Education, 400 Maryland Avenue, SW, Washington, DC 20202-5901. Carlow University does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, age, sex, handicap, or national and ethnic origin in the administration of its policies, admissions policies, scholarships and loan programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs.

Note – Please check your course schedule as some dates may vary in certain disciplines
COURSE CHANGES AND CANCELLATIONS All changes to this printed schedule (additions, cancellations, times, instructors, rooms) may be viewed at https://webadvisor.carlow.edu and https://myportal.carlow.edu. The Office of the Registrar will automatically withdraw students who are registered in courses which are cancelled and notify them by student e‐mail. Students must complete a Change of Registration Form to add or drop a course. The University reserves the right to make changes in the course schedules and is subject to change in case of University closing or other emergency.
REGISTRATION DATES All students are expected to meet with their academic advisor to discuss their schedule.
Web registration opens to advisors as well as Graduate students on October 31st. Instructions for registering online are on the Carlow website, Blackboard, MyPORTAL, and WebAdvisor.
GENERAL INFORMATION 1. Due date for SUMMER 2013 tuition and fees is May 3, 2013. 2. The student is responsible for properly completing the registration process. Incomplete forms or missing paperwork can
result in the student not appearing on the official class list, not receiving a grade, or having problems with billing. 3. For questions about invoices, payment arrangements, bursar holds or financial aid, the student should contact the Student
HUB at (412) 578‐6389 or e‐mail [email protected] or [email protected]. 4. Independent Study*, Tutorial*, and, Permission to take Course off Campus* forms must be brought to the Office of the
Registrar for processing.
*Taking Courses Off Campus After matriculation at Carlow, a Carlow student could be permitted to transfer a maximum* of twelve (12) credits from other universities, exclusive of cross‐registration. The student will be required to have permission of the Academic Advisor(s) and the Office of the Registrar before registering for each course. *Graduate students – refer to transfer policies in Graduate catalog.
CHANGE OF REGISTRATION
A student can add or drop a course by fully completing a Change of Registration form (the “Add/Drop form”). If the student is considered to be First Year, the form must be signed by the student’s advisor(s). Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate students may add/drop courses in WebAdvisor without completing a Change of Registration form.
Students who miss examination and tests should not assume at they will receive permission to take the examination or test at a later date. For Weekend College (WEC) and Carlow Accelerated Program (CAP) courses, attendance is crucial because of the compressed nature of the courses. University policy states that students missing more than two class meetings of a course will receive a failing grade.
GRADING PROCEDURES
End of semester/session grade reports can be accessed on WebAdvisor. Withdrawal from a course must be made officially in the Office of the Registrar by the dates as they appear in the Academic Calendar. For clarification of the policy on Incompletes, see the catalog. An Incomplete grade is given to students whose work is passing but due to extenuating circumstances have assignments or evaluations to complete. The instructor is required to assign the “I” grade on her/his final grade sheet. The rating of “I” for undergraduate courses is automatically changed to “F” by the Registrar if not removed within six (6) weeks after the beginning of the next academic semester or CAP session. Graduate “I” grades are changed to “F” if not removed six weeks after the end of the academic semester or CAP session. After final grades have been submitted to the Office of the Registrar, no grade can be changed unless there has been an error on the part of the faculty member and may be changed only by the faculty member who assigned the grade. In such a case, the faculty member must complete the Change of Grade Form in the Office of the Registrar. An undergraduate student wishing to make up an F or D grade can do so only by repeating the same course. If the student repeats the course, both grades are recorded on the transcript. The higher grade is used to calculate the Cumulative Quality Point Average (QPA).
