A thought:
On average if you read 20 mins per day you will
read 1,800,000 words a year. If you read just 1
book a day to your child, they would have been
read 1825 books by their 5th birthday.
“The more words you know, the more clearly and
powerfully you will think … and the more ideas
you will invite into your mind.” (Wilfred Funk,
1986)
What it means to ‘know’ a word is not a simple
notion. Word learning is incremental: that is,
understanding a word is usually partial at first and
grows with repeated exposures. (Dale and
O’Rourke 1986)
We know vocabulary is critical to success in read-
ing and in broader academic achievement. The
size of a child’s vocabulary in the preschool years
of schooling, is a significant predictor of reading
comprehension in Primary school.
Our educators at Ungarra Primary school continue to
strategically support the growth of our students’ vocabu-
lary so students can use increasingly more precise and
descriptive words. This will continue to improve both
oral language and written language.
Term 3 welcomes back Playcentre families and opens the
door for private piano lessons to continue on site. We
are also aiming to have the Upper Primary Camp, Tabloid
Sports Day, PAT testing and School Photos occur. Dates
for these events will be sent to families asap. We also
would like to welcome back our volunteers to classrooms
and kindly remind people to use our Site Entry Form
when signing in at the office. Term 3 will be another busy
term with lots of rich learning so watch this space for
updates on student achievement.
Year 2 to 7 students will participate in an online Maths
Competition which provides feedback on student
achievement for parents and teachers. This will be held
30th July. If you don’t wish your child to participate,
please let me know. Welcome back - Karl Robst

This year I have been playing for Modbury Vista and have been driving over each Sunday for Soccer games. I got in this
team from a coach asking if I would want to play for Modbury Vista as he saw me trying out for the State School Girls
team.
Last week on Sunday I played in Adelaide and we won 19-0. The game was fun and I stole the ball off a lot of people.
Earlier this year I travelled to Tasmania with a team of girls and we played about seven games.
Next Modbury Vista is versing Fulham United. I enjoy playing with a joyful team but I don’t enjoy driving all the way to
Adelaide.

Billycart Breakdown
It all started with the idea to build Billycarts. Bunnings had
supplied us all the materials we needed to build the carts in
under 5 weeks. The idea was to design the billycarts, build the
them and then race them down Modra’s farm. Everyone was
excited to build the cart but before we could start anything,
we had to write the procedure.
Week one: The Procedure
The first week we had to pick all six teams and write the procedure. Bunnings had sent us a video on how to
make the carts. We had to watch the video and write down all the steps, materials, tools and method on
scrap paper. After writing everything on scrap paper we had to write a good copy down in our books. Then it
was onto the building stage.
Week two: The Build
The building stage was the hardest and funniest part of the hole project. First, we had to gather all the mate-
rials we needed and label them. Then we needed to build the carts. One at a time Mr Robst took a group to
round up the parts, piece them together and then drill the parts in to for the base of the cart.
Week three: The Build (Part Two)
Week three came around and most people had almost finished building. All we had to do was drill in the
axles and then attach the wheels. By the end of the week everyone had finished their carts . Next was
painting!
Week four: Painting
Painting the carts was the easiest part of the project. Everyone had chosen their colours and started
painting. Most of the groups had got their base layer finished by the end of the day and by the end of the
week everyone had their carts done.
Week 5: Race Day
2nd of July, Thursday afternoon, everyone was excited. Today was race day at Modra’s farm. After recess,
everyone grabbed their gear and lined up for the bus. We were happily accompanied by ABC news, some of
the Bunnings staff and two paramedics. After the bus took us to Modra’s, it was lunch. Everyone ate their
ordered lunch and then at one o’clock, it was time for the race. All the carts were rolled up the hill and then
it was time to start!
Week 5: The Race!
There were four heats to the race. The team with the least points wins, with the winners getting a trophy
and 2nd and 3rd getting ribbons. Each race, three teams would ride down the track and receive ribbons
depending on their placement. Overall, everyone had fun. There were a lot of laughs, there was a bit of
drama and only one accident. In my eyes, it was a great day!
