B R E A K I N G T H R O U G H W I T H

A SEEMINGLY ORDINARY Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practice in 2012 proved to be anything but for Austin, Texas resident and BJJ practitioner Shama Ko. As she went to pass, her opponent went to sweep and Shama’s life took an unexpected turn. “My knee was stretched in opposite directions and immediately popped,” Shama recalls. “It was very painful to say the least.”

The prognosis came back as a torn meniscus, which worsened until Shama eventually had to step away from the mat completely. “The doctors say I have to make the decision between training for life or risk never training again if I am hurt again,” Shama says. “This was heart breaking news, but I don’t give up that easily and I have not lost hope.”

Born and raised on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, Shama began her BJJ career in 2003 and now trains at Gracie Humaitá in Austin. At the time of her injury in 2012, Shama was working toward an International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation world championship title, with a second place finish already under her belt. Having to put her competitive dreams on hold could have been a devastating blow, but for Shama, it proved to be a blessing in disguise.

“It opened up a lot of doors for me,” Shama says, “and it made me realize that I have the rest of my life to train jiu-jitsu.”

Refusing to stand idly by with her injury, Shama has redirected her energy toward an innovative idea called Girls in Gis. The program, founded by Ashley Freeman-Nguyen in Houston, Texas in 2009, brings together female BJJ practitioners in an environment of learning and camaraderie.

“Girls in Gis is the essence of every woman who steps on the mat,” Shama says. “Our events are just a meeting ground for us, but ultimately it’s a community. It’s building a sisterhood, it’s inspiring each other.”

The basic structure of Girls in Gis is a once-a-month, free event hosted at a dierent school around the state. (Currently there are chapters in Texas, Colorado, and a Midwest chapter that encompasses Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri and Kansas.) At each event the host school teaches techniques that the participants can try out right there, making new friends and ultimately breaking down barriers.

“Instead of going to competitions and thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, this girl is going to rip my arm o,’ you’re competing with your friends,” Shama explains. “You have this compassion and understanding for each other. … When you’re friends with that person and you have a healthy competitive relationship with them—with the understanding that it’s going to uplift both of you—it’s dierent.”

From the girl who slapped an arm bar on her abusive boyfriend, to the countless women who have overcome eects of post-traumatic stress disorder, Shama sees the Girls in Gis mantra of “strength in solidarity” coming to fruition.

“I think Girls in Gis is part of a much larger entity than just our events or what we do,” she says. “It’s part of a movement in a lot of ways. It’s a movement to empower women.”

“I found my strength with jiu-jitsu

and it gave me the confidence to pull

myself out of the darkness and I rose

to levels I never thought I could.”

FOR MATT POLACK, owner and head instructor at Key Martial Arts in Oceanside, California, discovering that the majority of his students are children of deployed military personnel was the chance to answer an especially unique—and important—calling.

“We’re talking six months to two years before they will get to see their parents again,” Matt says. “Especially when very young children and babies are involved, it can be a struggle to keep the memories going until their parent returns from deployment. That alone can be very stressful to deal with.”

And so Matt decided to help these military families by focusing his time and eort into not only teaching the children martial arts, but also being a support for the parent left at home.

“These parents have my personal number and can call me and my wife anytime of the night or day,” Matt says. He has also begun programs and special classes free of charge especially for military families. “And of course, we oer a military discount,” he adds with a smile.

A former Marine Corp sergeant himself, Matt entered the service at Camp Pendleton in 1998, which is located just 14 miles from where his martial arts school now sits in The Golden State.

Originally from Kent, Ohio, Matt admits he hung around a rough crowd and ended up being the only student in his group of friends to graduate from high school.

“I could have gone either way in life, but thanks to a very tough karate teacher named Professor Malcolm, I went in the right direction.”

He recalls how Professor Malcolm told a then-brown belt Matt that he would kick him out of class if he didn’t start to make better choices.

“He told me that he was not going to let me test for black belt,” Matt recalls. “That was exactly what I needed: someone to be strict with me and give me some sort of structure in my life.”

Matt went on to earn black belts in taekwondo, Isshinryu, and Kempo. Eventually, he ended up teaching hand-to-hand combat in the Marine Corps. It was during that time in the Marines that Matt first saw the heartbreak of moms and dads having to leave their families behind when deployed for military duty, and is also what prompted his desire to help the children and families that come into his studio now.

“You go from two parents to one. And when one child is acting out because he or she misses daddy, and you have a newborn baby you’re trying to take care of as well, it’s a lot to handle,” says Matt.

Because of his own positive experience as a youth in martial arts, his service in the Marines, and his genuine concern for military families, he has found himself being the “hang in there” coach—and joyfully accepts and fulfills that role every day.

“These soldiers put their lives at risk to

make sure that we get to keep certain

freedoms at home,” Matt says with

gratitude. “The least I can do is to

help them hold down the fort while

they perform their duties over there.”
