Okanlawon tasks youths on career building By Fatima Abubakre

he Director, Bureau of C o m m u n i c a t i o n a n d Strategy, Osun State, Mr. T

Semiu Okanlawon, has advised Nigerian youths to strive to build a career for themselves before aspiring to political offices, stressing that having a career will put them in a vantage position to contribute more effectively to the country's political development.

Mr. Okanlawon gave the advice at the University of Ilorin last Wednesday (June 15, 2016) while delivering a lecture at the maiden edition of the Omoluabi Leadership and Cultural Summit, organised by the University Branch of the National Association of Osun State Students (NAOSS).

The Summit was held in honour of Prof. Mojeed Olujinmi Alabi of the University's Department of Political Science and a serving m e m b e r o f t h e H o u s e o f Representatives.

In his lecture, entitled “Seventeen Years of Democratic Rule in Nigeria: Youth Contributions to Democratic Governance”, the Osun State Governor's Chief Media Adviser described as “a ray of hope for the youths” the proposed reduction in the age limit for people who seek political offices from the Presidency to the State Houses of Assemblies.

No twi ths t and ing th i s , h o w e v e r , M r . O k a n l a w o n maintained that “this is not to say that I support seeking political offices without building careers”.

The Guest Lecturer said, “Perhaps in the race to want to be like the reckless, flamboyant and ostentatious politicians outside, many Nigerians have forgotten that building a career is also most paramount before seeking political offices. Fresh from school, some people just want to find themselves at the National Assembly to partake in what they believe is being shared

at the national level. My advice is this, build your career to become a success, you are more likely to be sought after to fill some vital positions when the opportunities arise.”

According to him, “the political terrain appears structured against the youth. The result is that Nigeria witnesses one of the highest places of recycling of political office holders while youths are relegated to the background...for the current generation of Nigerian youths, it is my candid opinion that the task ahead of them is to recognise the problems that have confronted the institution of democracy in Nigeria.” While declaring that “the future is here,” Mr. Okanlawon enjoined the youths to engage in ventures that would make them less reliant on politicians who may want to exploit them for selfish gains. The Unilorin alumnus noted that “analysts of the Nigerian situation are quick to conclude that Nigeria is sick because our youths are unstable. With the military forced back to the barracks, the Nigerian system has diminished the roles of the youths especially at the critical decision making levels. Rather, it is these youths that are armed and are encouraged to perpetuate political violence before, during and after elections. It is the same youths who have also been the worst hit.”

Noting that “just on Monday, the Federal Government revealed that a staggering 403,000 applicants

registered on its portal for police job placement within 36 hours that that portal was opened”, Mr. Okanlawon said, “That is to tell you the grim situation that we face on job creation and job availability in our country”.

According to him, “Poor educational background, lack of access to funds either as loans or scholarship have combined to make the youths ill-prepared to take on such responsibilities that democratic culture could also impose on them. Obviously, the multi-dimensional, multifarious and multi-faceted problems facing the youths of Nigeria have robbed them of their rightful place in the scheme of democratic affairs. At the age of 35, most Nigerian youths are yet to find their bearings due to societal conspiracies that continue to undermine them.”

The Guest Speaker lamented that “17 years after the country returned to civil rule and 56 years after independence, Nigeria is still challenged in critical elements of true democracies such as free and fair elections, rule of law, recognition of basic human rights and getting the majority of the people to be active in democratic activities”.

In view of this, Mr Okanlawon said, “It, therefore, lies on the current generation of youths to bring an end to the deficiencies of our democratic culture”, which, he noted, can be ach ieved th rough advocacy, education, enlightenment of the populace and other related strategies.

Myth: Eating lots of fruits and veggies is a great way to lose weight

Fact: A diet that's high in fruits and vegetables has many health benefits, including lower risk for heart attacks and strokes. However, this habit alone isn't enough to whittle off weight unless you also make other changes in your behavior, such as exercising more and cutting down on sweets. Otherwise, you could even gain weight on a diet that's high in fruits and vegetables.

Meanwhile, while Innis anticipated that, as the media observed that the new media technologies have, indeed, evolved to evolved, the powerful group of people would be using then to exploit the point that McLuhan had predicted, but rather than bringing the others, McLuhan, on the other hand, laid more emphasis on the utopian peace, prosperity and unity, they have led the world to the positive transformation that the electronic media would bring to dystopian state where the new media ate being used blatantly for individuals and societies. In his prediction, which many of his acquiring power, profit, personal aggrandizements and revenge. It is, however, amazing that the new media are not just assertion that the “medium is the message”, meaning that the media, being exploited by the more powerful to exploit the less powerful, at a point in human history, would extend our experiences and senses, they are being flagrantly used by the less powerful, too, to exploit, and they would create new pattern of thought and behavior. oppress, damage and destroy the more powerful.
