Union Christian College, Aluva is a premier educational institution in Kerala, South India, established in 1921 as
a Centre of Higher Education and as a venture in inter denominational co-operation among the four major non -
catholic Christian denomination of South India viz. the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, the Malankara
Jacobite Syrian Church ,the Church of South India and the Malankara Marthoma Syrian Church , with the
founding fathers of the College being, the late Prof.K.C. Chacko,the late Prof.A.M.Varki,the late Prof. C.P. Mathew
and the late Prof. V.M. Ittyerah.
The idyllic campus, spread out in forty two acres, is located close to the banks of river Periyar Aluva, hardly ten
kilometers away from the Cochin International Airport, and four kilometers from Aluva Railway/Bus station, on
the Aluva-Paravoor road. The location privileges the campus with the refreshing ambiguity of urban proximity
and rural ambience.

Governance
Union Christian College, Aluva is a minority institution managed by
the Union Christian College Association.
The Business of the College is managed by the Board of Directors
(Governing body) consisting of the Manager (ex-Officio), the Principal
(ex-Officio) , the Bursar (ex-Officio) and six other members from the
Association.
The Standing Council consisting of twenty seven members is a
committe of the Union Christian College Association and consists of all
members of the association. The standing council is required to make
all required bye-laws necessary for the management of the affairs of the
Association. Sixteen members of the standing council are drawn from
eminent educationalists, industrialists, scientists, judges, advocates,
doctors and spiritual leaders. Eight members of the standing council
represent the teaching staff. The Manager,Principal and Bursar are ex-
officio members.
Ever since its inception, the College enjoyed recognition and admiration from men of
eminence at the national and international level, as is evidenced by the visits of Tagore in
1922 and Mahatma Gandhi in 1925. Mahatma addressed the teachers and students of the
College and wrote in the visitor’s diary of the College that he was delighted with the ideal
situation. The mango sapling planted by Gandhiji still graces the campus and remains a
hallowed spot.
The College was accredited at the five star level in 1999 and recently reaccredited with ‘A‘ level in 2011 by the
National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The college has grown in to an outstanding institution in
terms of teaching, learning and research with fifteen undergraduate programmmes and twelve post graduate
programmes covering almost all branches of arts and science. Eight departments are approved research centers of
the Mahatma Gandhi University.
The Union Christian College has made signal contributions
over several decades in producing scholars and responsible
citizens in all spheres of life. It has overseen the formative
years of eminent scientists, bureaucrats, entrepreneurs,
spiritual leaders, political leaders, creative writers, captains
of industry and public men. The College was awarded the
R. Sankar Award in 2005 for the best private special grade
college in the state adjudged by Government of Kerala.
Union Christian College aims at the wholesome
education of the young to bring out the best in each
individual. It strives to produce intellectually
competent, morally upright, spiritually inspired
and the patriotic young men and women in the
service of the country.
MISSION OF THE COLLEGE
MASTER OF COMPUTER APPLICATIONS
In 2001, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) approved the proposal of the Association of the Union Christian
College to start a new technical institution under the name and style of Union Christian College for conducting the three year Post
Graduate Course of Master of Computer Applications. 2.5 acres of land was set apart for the new institution with academic,
administrative and financial records including accounts maintained separately. The institution is affiliated to the Mahatma
Gandhi University, Kottayam. In the year 2014, the department also started the AICTE approved MCA Lateral Entry stream of 2
years with 60 seats.
The institution has highly competent faculty of permanent and visiting teachers. They move beyond the formal requirement of the
syllabus, incorporating the latest developments in the different areas of the discipline. The teaching faculty constantly updates
their skills and knowledge by attending enrichment programmes, refresher courses, national and regional level seminars and
workshops.
The learning environment is intense and stimulating. The regular academic programme is supplemented by seminars, workshops,
self development and communication sessions and aptitude reinforcement modules. The academic transactions are rigorous and
innovative.
The students and the faculty are kept exposed to the latest developments in the industry. The department places very high
expectations on the students. The prime values of discipline, punctuality and commitment are emphasized. The objective is to
produce quality software professionals who are also excellent human beings. The Department has the ideal infrastructure for
quality Computer Applications Programme. A full fledged internet lab, advanced projection tools, smart class rooms and a well
stocked and expanding library are some of the key features. A new seminar hall of seating capacity of 250 was opened in 2010.

Evaluation
The student evaluation consists of two components-
1. Sessional / Internal Assessment 2. End Semester Examination.
The Department had evolved an objective method of continuous evaluation system to
rate the students for internal assessment of 25 marks for each subject in a semester as
prescribed by the university. Periodic assessment of students is conducted through
internal class tests scheduled during the semester and comprehensive model
examination held at the end of the semester. In addition, students have to take
seminars and/or assignments and the same to be submitted in every subject during the
semester. The students score in the test, assignments, seminars and attendance are
tabulated as per the norms prescribed by the University to arrive at the students
internal assessment marks. The end semester examination for each subject in a
semester is conducted by the University and carries 75 marks.
Unique Features
The Institution gives emphasis not only on academics but also on co –curricular and extra curricular activities. There is a wide
spectrum of opportunities available outside classrooms which contribute to a great extent in developing the overall personality of
the students at Union Christian College. Keeping in mind the Vision, Mission and Goals and Objectives of the College, the
Department plans activities which encourage the students to strive for social justice and the uplift for the poor and under privileged
sections of the society.
Awards & Scholarships
Computer Labs
The department has three DLINK certified LAN connected computer labs with
more than 150 systems and are equipped with the latest technology Servers.
The labs are supported with uninterrupted power supply and adequate number
of printers. The Department has an academic alliance with Microsoft
Dreamspark Premium.
Infrastructural Facilities
The department is housed at a selfcontained building with all modern amenities and
spacious rooms. It is situated in the midst of a lush green plantation. It has a well equiped
conference room, a large seminar complex, a good library and state of the art computer lab.
Library
More than 8000 volumes of books / titles on computer science /
Mathematics are available in the library. The College subscribes to about
21 national/ international journals & 2 e-journals (IEEE & N-List)
The College has instituted the following awards and scholarships
and will be awarded only to those students who appear for the
internal assessment tests/test papers conducted by the college
* Semester Topper Award: Semester Topper of the University
Examination will be given an award as decided by the
Management Committee.
* Prof. Mathew Koshy Endowment Scholarship is instituted for
the best student in MCA. It is judged on the basis of securing
highest marks for the university examination in the 1st semester
and 2nd semester.
* Prof. Mathew Koshy Endowment Scholarship is awarded to the
top scorer in mathematics in the first semester.
* Mrs. Krishnambal Scholarship is awarded for the best outgoing
student in MCA. This scholarship is instituted by Mr. Mahesh
S.R, an alumnus (2001- 03 Batch) of MCA in memory of his
mother.
* Dr. Sheela Kumari Issac Award is for the best student in MCA
instituted by the Course coordinator, Dr. Sheela Kumari Issac.
* Dr. Abraham C Kulangara Scholarship is given for the students
on the basis of merit cum means during the period of regular
study.
Tuition Fee Waiver Scheme (TFW) - TFW is applicable
to seats up to a max 5% of sanctioned intake and shall
be supernumerary in nature. Children of parents whose
annual income is less than Rs: 2.5 lakhs from all
sources shall be eligible under the scheme. The waiver
is limited to the tuition fee as per government norms for
self financing courses. All other fee will have to be paid
by the beneficiary. Rank list will be prepared as per
AICTE norms for Tuition Fee Waiver Scheme
Industry Institute Partnership Cell (IIPC)
To bring industry closer to the academia and vice-versa, the
Department mooted the idea of an Industry Institute
Partnership Cell. The purpose is to bring together at a common
forum academicians, industrialist, practicing managers and
administrators to participate in discussion and help evolving
consensus on various emerging issues besides identifications of
thrust areas for joint programmes of research and development
between industries and college. The Cell conducts transITion, a’
Distinguished Lecture Series’ every year and experts from
industries give lectures.
The Training and Placement Cell is committed to empowering
the students for employability. The Cell conducts training
programmes in Communication Skill, Aptitude, Reasoning
Ability etc. The training is imparted by qualified experts from
different parts of the country. A good number of students have
been placed in reputed companies.
This year many of our students have received campus
placement offers from companies such as Wipro, IBS,
Accenture, Speridian Technologies, UST Global and
Cognizant Technology Solutions.Many of the top IT
Companies such as Infosys, IBS Software Services, UST
Global, Tata Elxsi etc visit our Campus frequently to
conduct their recruitment drive for MCA.
Cells & ActivitiesStudents of the department engage in large number of activities which generally help them to develop their talents, leadership
quality and organising skills. These extra curricular activities of the department are organised through various cells in which each
student actively gets involved.
Alumni Association
The Alumni Association is a common
platform for all former students as well as
teachers of the college to meet and share
ideas, to renew and strengthen relations
and share experience of their college days.
The Association conducts various
programmes - organize alumni meetings
for the happy reunion of former students
of Department of Computer Applications .
The Training and Placement Cell
Value Education Program
This program helps the students to develop positive
attitudes that are important for a better society. This is also
a means of providing students with a philosophy of life, to
ensure their overall growth, development, and to help them
to make choices which will integrate them into the
community with respect, confidence and clarity of purpose
as mentioned in the Mission Statement of the College.
MCA Association
The MCA Association co-ordinates a number of activities like
Resonance – an inter house competition meet, intercollegiate fests,
Annual day celebrations, social service programs,Sports meet and
celebrations of various festivals in kerala.
The Institution regularly organizes seminars and workshops on
frontier areas in computer science and application at the
regional and national level with the sponsorship of AICTE, UGC,
UBCHEA etc. Experts and delegates from across the state
participate in such events.
Free Open Source Software (FOSS) Cell
The Department has formed a Free Open Source Software Cell
to make the staff and students aware of vast possibilities in the
making and use of free software. This is an extension activity of
the department. Organizing seminars on the free software,
conducting internationally and nationally acclaimed
symposiums, workshops etc. are some of the activities that the
FOSS Cell takes up.
Seminars / Workshops
Debate Club
The department has an active debate club which conducts
debate competitions so as to improve the communication skill
of the students. All students are invited and encouraged to join
this extracurricular club. Students learn to create
factual/logical, ethical and emotional arguments to persuade
others in the club that their "side" is correct.
Software Development Cell
The Cell provides students a wide exposure to various Software
tools, Software Development, Project Management etc. Various
in-house projects have been developed by the members of the cell
& some of the projects are under construction.
Open House
The Department provides a platform to review and analyse the
performance of students through Open house for each semester.
The faculty, parents and students sit together to discuss various
aspects related to the academics and overall development of
students and to suggest improvements. The strength and
weakness of the stduents are given due importance in these
discussions.
The department offer courses in frontier areas in Computer
Applications based on students requirements. The
department also provides Oracle Certified Course.
Ancillary Courses
Outreach Activities
The department extends its service to the society through
various outreach activities such as IT Literacy Awareness
Sessions for senior citizens & Kudumbasree workers.
Students of the department are also actively engaged in
spreading the awareness of bad effects of improper waste
management

Candidates belonging to Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) referred to GO(P) 208/66/ Edn dated. 2-5-96 and
subsequent amendments to order issued by the Government shall be given a relaxation of 2% marks in the prescribed minimum for
admission. A relaxation of 5% marks from the prescribed minimum shall be allowed in the case of physically handicapped persons. Candidates who have passed the qualifying examination in more than one chance in the subject (excluding languages) will have their
percentage marks derated at the rate of 5% for every additional appearance for the purpose of ranking.Candidates with such degrees awarded by the Mahatma Gandhi University or any other degree recognized as equivalent to degrees by
the Mahatma Gandhi University also are eligible to apply.

A pass with not less than 50% marks in any recognized regular Bachelors Degree course of minimum three years duration in any discipline with Mathematics at 10+2 level ORA pass with not less than 50% marks in any recognized Regular Bachelors Degree course of minimum three years duration in any discipline with Mathematics/Statistics (this does not include Business Mathematics or Business Statistics) as one of the Subjects. ORA pass with not less than 50% marks in BCA degree of minimum three
years duration from a recognized University.

Union Christian College, Aluva. The full address of the candidate should be shown in the request for application form. Application form duly
filled in together with the necessary documents should reach the Director, MCA, Union Christian College, U.C. College P O, Aluva-683102
before the last date to be announced later. It should be noted that all necessary details should be furnished and supported by copies of certificates
duly attested by a Gazetted Officer or The Head of the Institution in which the candidate studied last. Application forms can also be downloaded
from the department website www.mcaucc.edu.in. Such form should be accompanied by the DD favoring Principal/Director, MCA, Union
Christian College, Aluva along with all other necessary documents

regarding admission. The Director will decide any other details not specifically covered by the above and his decision will be final. The
Director is also empowered to cancel any admission if found to be illegal subsequent to the admission.

– The College will not be responsible for the loss or theft of any valuables. Students are advised against wearing costly ornaments or
bringing excess cash.
Students are advised to keep the premises clean. The cost of repiar/replacement of damaged college property will be
realized by a common fine levied on all the students if the person/persons responsible for the same cannot be identified.
– The college insists on all students wearing uniform and identity cards to uphold the identity & dignity of the professional course.
As per the Supreme court verdict in SLP No. 24295 of 2006 dated 16-05-2007 and in civil appeal number 887 of 2009,
dated 8-5- 2009, ragging is totally banned & anyone found guilty of ragging and/or abetting ragging is liable to be severely punished. The
parents must sign an affidavit to the effect that he or she is aware of the law against ragging & agrees to the punishment meted out to his/her ward
in case the latter is found guilty of ragging and /or abetting ragging. The students must also sign a similar affidavit.
As per the direction from Govt. of Kerala the use of mobile phones is banned while in the campus.
Transfer and Conduct Certificates- Students who leave the institution before the completion of course will be given Transfer Certificate only on
payment of fee for the whole course. Conduct Certificate is not issued as a matter of right; it has to be earned by the student by proper conduct .
