TERMINOLOGY Some terms and acronyms are used frequently and interchangeably throughout this handbook. These include: • UBPC: Union Band Parents Club • UPS: Union Public Schools • Band, Band Program, Union High School Band Program, ensemble, performance unit, marching band, Renegade Regiment • Member = Band member = Guard member = student • OBA: Oklahoma Bandmasters Association • BOA: Bands of America (a portion of Music for All) • OSSAA: Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association PREFACE This handbook describes the Union High School Band Program and its policies and procedures. The high school band program includes the Union 9th Grade Center and Senior High School/UCA. Band members are required to follow policies and procedures of the Union Public Schools and the Union Band Program. School rules and policies are in force at all times that a member is directly or indirectly involved in any activity sponsored by or in the name of Union High School or Union Bands. School policy shall have priority over band policy in the event of any policy conflict. The band directors shall have authority to suspend or amend any band policy at any time deemed necessary in the best interest of the overall band program. BAND MEMBERS: The High School Band Experience is what you make of it. Every year we see seniors graduate from Union who have truly maxed-out their opportunities in our program. We also observe students that could have made so much more of their high school years. Which group will you fit into? Participating fully in the band program can reap numerous individual rewards. Along with the personal benefits available, our program also relies heavily on extensive group principles. Please remember that there are quite a few students in the program and that a key element of success in our organization hinges on the ability for everyone to get along and work toward common goals. True, you will not always be best of friends with every single member of our organization, but hopefully you will gain an appreciation for each member’s role and their commitment to the group. Remember that at times involvement in any organization of this type is like a roller coaster. There will be highs and lows along the way. Keep this in mind and try to refrain from emotionally getting too high or low. An even-keel approach can be an extremely valuable trait to strive to possess. Simply put, the more you put in to the organization, the more you will get out of our group. The more dedicated members in our organization, the further we as a group can progress. Lastly, with regard to the policies and procedures toward the end of this handbook, if you have to ask the question “would the band staff approve of what I’m doing?”, then it’s probably not a good idea. This is your organization, and sometimes it’s your job to speak up if you see others harming the organization in any way. Don’t sit back and watch others damage what you’ve invested so much effort in building! Best of luck to you and strive for excellence as you push yourself to new heights and standards!

BAND PARENTS: Welcome! Our organization could not exist and thrive like it does without the incredible volunteer support that exists. There are extensive and numerous opportunities to assist the program in a variety of ways. Please take the time to decide the most effective way to share your talents with the organization. Spoken from a former band student with a very involved parent, your child and their colleagues will appreciate all of your efforts. After all, what other activity can you actually share in the experience with your child? The band program produces a calendar each spring. Please get these dates on your family calendar now. Feel free to call or email any director or UBPC officer for help and remember to come to the meetings to get the latest information about each event. In the case of a last minute emergency, please contact the band office at (918)357-7225. Rarely do you see such a large group of students assembled in one organization with such a strong focus on achieving excellence. Take the opportunity to get to know the instructors, other parents, and the members who make our success a reality. As much as we and the entire program appreciate your involvement and support, please remember that staff members are the decision makers and are the ones who have to live with the program long after your child has graduated. Lastly, and probably most importantly, your attendance at concerts and performances is greatly appreciated. Seeing the look on a child’s face when family members are at an event supporting them is priceless! Be proud of all that work your child has invested in their performance! On behalf of all directors and staff: Matthew McCready, Director of Bands

BAND PROGRAM OVERVIEW OF OFFERINGS MARCHING BAND Union has one marching band. This band is a competitive group and students audition for performing positions. Membership is open to all students grades 9-12 who are enrolled in band. CONCERT BAND Students enroll in band as a class, which meets during the normal school day at the HS campus. Auditions for placement in concert band takes place near the end of marching band season, usually around the beginning of November. JAZZ ENSEMBLE 9th through 12th grade students may elect to enroll in jazz ensemble as a class, which meets during the normal school day. Students in jazz ensemble must first be enrolled in 1st hour marching/concert band. Other band members not selected for the high school jazz band may elect to participate in jazz ensemble as an after school activity. PERCUSSION The percussion department emphasizes a well-rounded education on all percussion instruments, specifically via the concert band literature and concert band performance experiences during the second semester. Students participate in master classes, solo preparation & coaching, ensemble participation & coaching, and performance in the annual spring semester percussion showcase concert. Additionally, students have the option to participate in the following Spring Semester opportunities: the Indoor Competitive Percussion Ensemble (“Winter Drumline”), Rufus Posse (a student-led “Stomp-style” production), and solo/ensemble contest. GUARD Fall Guard: Auditions for the fall guard will take place in May of the previous school year. Membership is open to all students grades 9-12. Winter Guard: Auditions for winter guard will be held at the conclusion of the marching band season. Membership is open to anyone grades 7-12. PEP BAND During the winter season of athletics, a pep band is formed to play for various events. Information regarding this ensemble is dispersed in class at the end of marching season, well in advance of any performances. PIT ORCHESTRA The pit orchestra provides musical support for the annual all-school musical production, usually taking place in early February. Auditions for this group usually take place towards the end of marching band. Rehearsals greatly increase in intensity until the production takes place. ORCHESTRA WINDS & PERCUSSION During the early second semester, certain winds and percussion are selected to participate alongside string players to create the Union symphony orchestra. Contest is in late February and playing orchestral repertoire in this environment is extremely enriching and one which is strongly suggested for able students to participate. CONCERT BAND: WINTER and SPRING MONTHS CONCERT SEASON INFO Because the marching band performs so often in public, the concert season often seems “forgotten” by those not involved in the band program; this is far from being true. Concert season is the time when the majority of musical training takes place. Each band member will earn a position in a concert band based on an audition usually held toward the end of marching season. The concert bands perform several concerts during the spring semester, as well as participate in several festivals, clinics, and work with guest clinicians. SOLO AND ENSEMBLE CONTEST Solo and Ensemble contests give the band member and director a good idea of how each member is progressing musically, as well as providing an additional musical opportunity for the student. District Solo and Ensemble contest is usually held in February. All soloists should make appropriate plans for hiring a piano accompanist. All band members may be required to participate and will be given ample notice for proper preparation. ALL-DISTRICT AND ALL-STATE HONOR BANDS Individual band members are strongly encouraged to audition for these bands. Pre-selected tryout music is available to all students in May

4

of the previous school year. The band tryouts are held in early November and the Second Round state audition occurs in December. Band members who become All-State musicians are highly praised and honored. These students assemble in Tulsa in January to perform at the Oklahoma Music Educators Association convention. The honor band, made up of these wonderful musicians, represents the top high school band members in the state of Oklahoma. Advancing to All-State is the highest individual honor a high school musician can achieve. PRIVATE LESSONS Private lessons give the student a chance to progress at an accelerated rate toward the mastery of his/her instrument. The private instructor is able to work with the student on an individual level, gearing the lessons to fit the specific needs of the performer. The student is able to hear improvement in his/her playing almost immediately, unlike the full band setting where players can “hide” or cover their areas of inexperience by allowing stronger players to carry the weight of the section. Students with the benefits of private lessons have a history of becoming top players in the program (and sometimes become private lesson instructors themselves while in college). The cost per lesson varies with the instructor, as does the location. Some teach at home, at school, others at area music stores, and some at our neighboring universities. It is well worth the time and effort of scheduling lessons when the student achieves a higher level of proficiency on his/her instrument. A list of private instructors are available online at www.UnionBands.com GRADUATION PERFORMANCES All non-senior band members will be expected to perform for these ceremonies. The ceremony is usually held at the ORU Mabee Center in May. It is not necessary for parents to attend unless they desire. SPRING AUDITION The spring semester is a very busy time for all band members. Tryouts for marching band, jazz band, drum majors, guard and drum line are all held during this time. You will receive all pertinent information in class from the directors. MARCHING BAND – “RENEGADE REGIMENT” MARCHING SEASON The majority of the fall semester comprises the marching band season. The Renegade Regiment meets during the school day as a class, as well as for numerous extra-curricular rehearsals, performances, and events. Please consult the schedule provided. SECTIONS WINDS The Renegade Regiment wind section (consisting of all brass and woodwind players) is selected following the musical and visual audition that takes place in conjunction with the May Camp. GUARD The fall guard greatly enhances the visual performance of the marching band. Selection is based on tryouts in the spring. The group has their own specially trained instructors and may work with dance, rifles, sabers, flags, and props. The majority of the fall guard will proceed to winter guard at the conclusion of the marching season. PERCUSSION The percussion section of the Renegade Regiment Marching Band consists of the following: Field Battery Instruments (Snare Drums, Tenor Drums, and Bass Drums) and the Front Ensemble (Auxiliary Instruments, Keyboard Percussion, and Electronics). The percussion section is selected based on a musical and visual audition, which usually takes place in May. The specific instrumentation and instruments used in the percussion section will vary from year to year based on the demands of the overall show design. DRUM MAJOR Members are eligible to audition for Drum Major after completion of a full season in the Renegade Regiment. Drum Majors audition in areas that demonstrate their skills in leadership, conducting, maturity, musicianship and marching ability. A clinic is held in May to prepare the interested students, followed by an audition. Past performance in regards to academic eligibility will be considered in the selection process. SECTION LEADER One or more members of a section may be selected to be a section leader. Leaders are selected in May based on an application process. Leadership duties are many, and students willing to fulfill the role of a section leader are truly selfless givers of their time and efforts for the betterment of the band program. Section leaders should set a positive example and model appropriate behavior at all times. REHEARSALS Since the Renegade Regiment has such a high expectation for quality performance, a number of rehearsals fall outside of the typical school day. Rehearsals are as follows, but not limited to: - Summer Rehearsal: Rehearsal during May, June, and July. - 2-a-Days Band Camp: Begins approximately two weeks before the first day of school and usually lasts eight hours per rehearsal day. - School Day rehearsals: 7:00 AM rehearsal on most school days. - Sectional Rehearsal: An additional rehearsal per week devoted to just the members’ particular section (i.e. Percussion, Guard, Brass, Woodwinds, etc.). - Extra Rehearsals: Typically every Thursday night for the duration of marching season, as well as an occasional rehearsal sometimes on Tuesday and/or Saturday. - A Detailed calendar with all rehearsal dates and times will be provided as well as posted on the internet at www.UnionBands.com AUGUST CAMP (SUMMER BAND CAMP) aka “2-a-DAYS” Approximately two weeks before school starts our busy marching season begins. Attendance at this camp is mandatory so plan vacations

5

accordingly. Camp usually concludes with a picnic for students, parents, all family members, and any Renegade Regiment fans. At this evening picnic, much information is discussed regarding the upcoming season and a brief demonstration of what’s been learned at band camp is displayed by the students and staff. The summer band camp will consist of the most concentrated rehearsal time for the entire season. During this time, we build fundamental skills and teach a large amount of the competitive marching show. As you can imagine, this puts important emphasis on this camp. The dates and times vary, but plan for 8-hour days. Comfortable cross-trainers, light colored clothes, and a cap are the best type of attire. It also will be necessary to have a water jug, sunscreen, and sunglasses. Have your student check with their section members for other good advice. Some of the activities at this camp include: • Learning show music • Learning drill • Uniform distribution • Learning “stand tunes” (music for football games and pep rallies) • Lots & lots of bonding between old and new band members. “SCHOOL DAY” REHEARSALS Once school starts, the practice schedule during marching season can be rather hectic. It will greatly aid your student to mark your family calendar accordingly. Managing ones time and activities becomes an absolute necessity. Time management of activities and schedules is a mandatory and integral part of the group being able to achieve its goals. PERFORMANCES The Renegade Regiment marching band performs at all home varsity football games as well as most away varsity football games (travel schedule permitting). The Renegade Regiment also performs at contests and festivals. The format of most contests is a prelims / finals format. The Renegade Regiment also performs at various community appearances based on need and accessibility. VARSITY FOOTBALL GAMES Fridays in the fall semester become fast paced for the Renegade Regiment. Often, there are pep rally performances at the high school at the end of the school day to promote school spirit. The members will usually have a “dress-rehearsal” after school is dismissed, then the band is sometimes fed dinner on campus. Following the dinner break, members will have time to change into uniform and make necessary adjustments prior to the designated report time. Warm-ups and inspections will take place prior to marching to the stadium for home games or before loading the buses for an ‘away’ game. MUSIC FOR ALL / BANDS OF AMERICA Bands of America--BOA--is a premier national organization for high school music students. Based in Indiana, BOA hosts many excellent contests and symposiums. BOA is probably best known for marching contests held each fall. There are many regional contests held around the US. St. Louis, San Antonio, and Atlanta are familiar BOA destinations for the Renegade Regiment. Each year the directors choose locations to fit our busy fall schedule. You will know in advance so that you can plan accordingly. While many parents are needed to chaperone, some parents choose to follow the buses to these contests and make reservations to stay at a nearby hotel. Charter buses are usually the mode of transportation with each student paying a trip fee that covers such things as: transportation, meals, lodging, entertainment, and contest registration. Each year the schedule varies due to performance times. There is a preliminary performance and, hopefully, inclusion in the finals. There’s plenty of time to purchase T-shirts, patches, videos, etc. We usually get home very late but it’s well worth the opportunity to see other high-caliber bands. These contests require lots of parental involvement. The Grand National Championships are held each year in Indianapolis at the Lucas Oil Stadium. The Renegade Regiment Marching Band first attended this contest in 1984, and has often been a finalist (from a field of 90+ bands). This is a tremendous honor for our program, school, community, city, and state. We hope to continue our trips to BOA Grand Nationals in future years. BOA also hosts a concert festival in the spring in Indianapolis. Individual band members may audition for inclusion in the Honor Band of America, which is comprised of high school students across the US. There is expense involved, but if you wish your band member to try out, please contact one of the directors. The BOA web site, www.musicforall.org, is full of information and will keep you logging on all year. You will be able to keep up-to-date on scores, news, etc. RENEGADE REVIEW Union hosts an annual marching band competition on a Saturday in early October. Everyone should mark this on their calendar and plan on working this huge event. Participation in running this festival from both students and parents is the only way that such a large show is able to be successful. This is also a major fundraiser for the band program, with the ultimate goal of providing as much income as possible to be contributed to band costs for the year. We also take pride in providing a top-notch event with an extremely hospitable and welcoming environment for all visiting bands and guests. SPECIAL EVENTS From time to time, special events may arise in addition to athletic performances, contests, parades, concerts, and other such appearances. Participation in special events not previously scheduled will be at the discretion of the band director and school officials after conferring with the band regarding the feasibility of the event. The band is not able to accept all invitations for obvious reasons and is not able to do instant performances.

6

TRIPS The band takes several bus trips throughout the year. Charter buses are used for “big” trips while yellow school buses are used for Friday night football games and local contests. These bus trips are great fun for the band. Bus assignments are made in advance via student sign ups according to seniority. Students are expected to be on their best behavior. There will be adult chaperones on each bus. Band members are usually permitted to bring small coolers, snacks, videos, ipods, blankets, and pillows on the charter bus trips. Quite often band parents donate snacks and drinks for the trips in addition to items that students bring. You will be notified if spending money is needed for additional meals for longer trips. You will receive itineraries with times, locations, and phone numbers for longer bus trips. GENERAL BAND PROGRAM INFORMATION EARNING A LETTER In order to earn a letter to wear on your band letter jacket, a student must have completed their first marching season in the Renegade Regiment and be in good standing with the organization. Students should not wear their letter on their letter jacket until appropriately awarded the letter at the completion of their first marching season. Band staff reserves the right to deny a letter to any student not living up to the standards of the organization. BAND BANQUET The Union High School Band holds a formal annual awards banquet in the spring. The purpose of the banquet is to reflect upon the year’s accomplishments, to honor those who have realized special achievements, and to recognize graduating seniors for their years of service to the band. Participation certificates and outstanding achievement awards are also presented at the banquet as well. We strive to make the banquet a special evening for everyone and the format changes slightly from year to year. This special evening brings the band together one last time to review the year and wish the seniors a fond farewell. The location varies from year to year but it is usually held on campus and is considered a semi - formal evening. Some students bring dates, but many prefer to come with their family and group of friends. A fee is collected to cover the cost of the dinner. UNIFORMS School owned uniforms will be issued to band members. Members may be required to purchase uniform parts not owned by the school. Union High School Band has a large stock of uniforms. Uniforms are inventoried, repaired, distributed, and collected by the UBPC. There are several personal accessory items that each marching band member is responsible for purchasing. For marching band, these include gloves, shoes, socks, tuxedo shirt, etc. These items are often included in the student account fee. However, additional quantities may be purchased. All members (excluding guard) will wear the same designated T-shirt under their uniform at all times. Please refer to the Uniform Guidelines later in this handbook. SPIRITWEAR Spirit wear is available for parents and other family members. We have many different types of shirts, sweatshirts, caps, etc. that are available over the course of the year. You will have opportunities to view the products for sale at the band parent meetings, and at some football games. It is a great way to show your support for the band. FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS FEES Each Renegade Regiment member’s costs and fees are based on but not limited to the following; • Uniform Accessories: Each Wind and Percussion student purchases their uniform shoes, uniform T-shirt, gloves, socks, tuxedo shirt, etc. Some of these items are ordered as a group to achieve the lowest possible discount pricing to each student. Each guard student will also have additional items, such as uniform shoes, makeup, gloves, etc. • Trip Food: The members are fed before most ballgame performances and contests. • Out-of-State contests: Each member pays or fundraises their portion of the overall cost for the band to travel to an out-of-state event. This cost includes transportation, lodging, meals, entertainment, etc. for the entire trip. All student accounts must be kept in good standing or performance spots and/or travel opportunities may be relinquished. 5) Each rehearsal should be considered its own entity. IF a student needs to miss both a morning AND afterschool rehearsal, please communicate with staff regarding both absences.

C) Consequences of unexcused absences i) An unexcused absence may result in a reduction of one letter grade for the semester and/or two letter grades for the reporting period.

ii) Process a) First absence: Student and Director conference. b) Second absence: Student is placed on probationary status by Directors.

c) Third absence: Student may lose his/her position in the performing group and become an alternate performer to the main performing group.

iii) If the student is already an alternate and obtains more than the allowed number of absences, his/her grade will be affected according to School Board Policy or he/she may be removed from the extra curricular activity. iv) If an alternate is not available at the time the student is removed from the performing group, the student may be suspended for upcoming performances. 8

5) Eligibility A) All members must be eligible to compete according to guidelines set by Union Public Schools and the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association. B) Eligibility is defined as passing (60% or better) in all classes.

i) The eligibility report is processed mid-week by school personnel. ii) A member that is failing one or more classes should be designated to a PROBATIONARY STATUS for the following week of school activities. IF a student was placed on the probation list by error, they have until 3pm Friday of that same week to rectify this error. UNLESS the member clears their name off of “the list” by 3pm Friday, they are deemed to be on probation for the following week. iii) Once a member is on probation, they may be placed in an alternate position until their grade deficiency has been resolved. iv) A member who is failing a class in two or more consecutive weeks (regardless of course) will be designated to an INELIGIBLE STATUS for the following week of school activities. IF a student was placed on the ineligible list by error, they have until 3pm Friday to rectify this error. UNLESS the member clears their name off of “the list” by 3pm Friday, they are deemed to be ineligible for the following week. v) Once a student is ineligible, he/she remains ineligible for the entire eligibility week/period. vi) BE AWARE!!! Dropping a class results in an immediate 3-week status of ineligibility. vii) Once deemed ineligible, a member must be confirmed as passing all of their classes to regain their ability to participate, and may only be cleared by the district’s eligibility office. The student remains ineligible until the next eligibility week/period and is confirmed as passing all classes. Handing a band staff member a note from a teacher, parent, or student will not suffice, the student MUST be cleared by the eligibility office. viii) Once ineligible, a student may be removed from rehearsal in order to focus on studies and returning their academic status to an eligible state.

C) Ineligible members may not compete nor travel with the group in any capacity. In order to maintain the integrity of the group, the directors have the responsibility to replace or reassign positions as needed to cover the absence of ineligible members. D) Previous academic performance may be considered when deciding future performing opportunities and performance “spots.” E) Ineligible students may not be allowed to participate in home Union events and will be assigned an alternative assignment during the time of the event in order to earn credit for the performance/participation grade. 6) Hazing, Initiation Hazing or initiating in any way is completely prohibited and will not be tolerated. 7) Internet Etiquette A) Background

i) There are an abundance of newsgroups, bulletin boards, Facebook, Myspace, etc. visited by band members and parents. These sites are a great way to hear about what bands and individuals are doing around the area, state, and country.

ii) Though entertaining, these places are littered with posts, which often reflect poorly on individuals and organizations. It’s obvious that many people either don’t realize or don’t care that their personal thoughts, when subjective or inflammatory, reflect on their entire group. iii) Unfortunately, we’ve had incidents where someone from Union posted something they thought was innocent, but it upset others when taken a certain way. Even when not intended, this is embarrassing.

B) Policy: Do not post comments on band related newsgroups and bulletin boards. i) The safest way to avoid criticism or scrutiny is NOT to post. ii) This policy applies to members and parents. C) Only staff or their designee is allowed to post performance footage on the internet. i) Posting video from our rehearsals, shows, or performances is a copyright violation.

ii) Posting performances from early in the year might give false impressions about the quality of our group. 8) Medications on trips A) The UPS has very specific policies on student administration of medications on band trips. B) Consult with a Band Director at your school site for the current school policy on medications. 9) Misbehavior / General Conduct Reasons for dismissal from the band program, dismissal from the activity with no credit, and/or suspension from performances are set by the Band Directors and the School Board as described in the Student and Faculty Handbook. Additional penalties are at the discretion of the band directors and could be imposed for the following violations: A) Consumption of alcohol, drugs, smoking, chewing, dipping i) Drinking alcohol, taking drugs, smoking, chewing tobacco, or dipping is not permitted. ii) Violation of this policy may result in immediate dismissal. iii) Violation of this policy at an event, which requires overnight travel, may result in being sent home in advance of the conclusion

of the event. a) All costs associated with being sent home in advance will become the responsibility of the member and/or his family. This will include the cost of transportation for the member and a chaperone.

B) Destruction or damaging of property i) Clearly apparent attempts, whether successful or not, to damage or destroy property, are not permitted nor acceptable.

ii) This policy applies to any property, whether personal, school, or private. iii) Band members and/or their parent(s) will be financially responsible for costs associated with restoring or replacing damaged or destroyed property. iv) If required, band members who are suspected of violating this policy may be reported to appropriate civil authorities.

C) Using Profanity D) Conduct detrimental to the organization

9

E) Theft of any kind F) Public Displays of Affection 10) Obedience A) Band members will show respect for directors, staff, clinicians, chaperones, guests, and all school officials. 11) School owned property A) All property i) Band members must properly care for school owned property. ii) Band members may be financially responsible to repair or replace school owned property, which is not properly cared for. B) Instruments and related equipment

i) A user fee per semester may be required for use of school owned instruments (percussion included). ii) If school owned property appears to require repair, notify a director prior to attempting to repair or hire such repair. C) Uniforms

i) You are responsible for the EXACT NUMBERED UNIFORM ITEMS that you receive. ii) Please refer to the attached “Uniform Guidelines” for further information. D) Marching band members will be issued a uniform. E) Members may be required to pay for some parts of their uniform (e.g. shoes, socks, gloves, tuxedo shirt). Directors will identify which parts must be purchased and which must be purchased from designated sources. F) Uniforms are inspected before every performance. Everything must be clean and in good repair. Failure to comply with this policy may lead to being excluded from performing. G) UPS owned uniforms will be stored at school and may not be taken home without written permission, unless otherwise instructed. H) UPS owned equipment is specifically checked out to individual students. Do not touch equipment that is not yours! 12) Trips A) Bands take trips for contests and performances. B) Code of Conduct

i) As members of the Union Fine Arts Department you will be highly visible, not only as a musical organization, but as representatives of our school, community, and state. That responsibility and opportunity carries with it an obligation to project and maintain the absolute highest moral and musical integrity. Many of those who come into contact with us as we perform and travel will form their opinions of Union based upon the impressions we create, both in close proximity and from a distance. Therefore, the rules of the Union Public School District and individual campus program rules and regulations apply at all times. As in any situation, good judgment must always prevail.

ii) All rules and expectations are set forth to help you enjoy your trips to the fullest and to avoid the embarrassment and inconvenience which momentary lapses in judgment may bring about. It is the goal of the Union Bands, that upon our return home to Tulsa, you will have acquired an even greater sense of pride as a Renegade Regiment member and as a Union Public School musical ambassador.

iii) Punctuality is essential in adhering to our busy trip schedule. Be early for everything and help each other stay organized. When enjoying free time and during sightseeing excursions, always stay in groups of three or more members. This is for your safety. There should not be any deviation.

iv) School dress code is required on all trips. In swimming pool areas, keep attire modest. When in concert attire, remain in full concert attire. It is unprofessional to have shirttails out, to wear athletic shoes while in formal attire, to chew gum, etc. The loading of equipment may necessitate adjustments to these expectations. Follow the instructions of the chaperone or adult sponsor in charge.

v) Mixed company in hotel rooms is prohibited. vi) While staying in hotels we will share facilities with other student groups and individuals from other schools and programs. Some of these groups and individuals may be unsupervised at times and may engage in behavior that would violate this Code of Conduct. Do not be influenced nor persuaded to engage in any behavior that is in conflict with the spirit of this Code of Conduct.

vii) Members must remain reasonably quiet at all times when in hotel facilities. Curfews will be strictly observed. Any personal needs, which might require leaving your room after curfew, must be arranged in advance with a chaperone or director. viii) Members are responsible for all their own equipment and personal items (triple check for uniform parts, extra reeds, valve oil, mutes, music, etc.) However, we all must share in the logistical responsibilities of the trip. We will all participate as equipment movers, sanitation engineers, stagehands, etc. Please perform the duties asked of you.

ix) There will be times when changes to our plans become necessary. Look for solutions to problems and avoid complaining. Concerns should be expressed at an appropriate time and in an appropriate manner. Suggestion: Never complain to anyone who cannot solve your problem. See a director.

13) Grading A) Grading is exactly the same for all band classes. 60% of the grade is participation and 40% of the grade is tests (including concerts, performances, and the final exam).

i) The participation portion of the grade is achieved by earning 20 points per rehearsal or class day. Absence from any rehearsal results in the earning of 0 points.

ii) IF the absence is excused, the points may be made up with the band staff before or after school. iii) Tardiness, no instrument, or no supplies for rehearsal removes a portion of the daily grade per infraction.

iv) Improper or unproductive rehearsal techniques by a student may result in additional point reductions or other more severe consequences and are subject to the band staff’s judgment. v) Any unexcused performance absence will not be tolerated and may result in a letter grade drop for the semester as well as an immediate 2-grade drop for the quarter. It may additionally result in more severe consequences up to and including dismissal from the program.

14) Alternates / Shadows:

10

A) Some members of the marching band will be alternates. Members become alternates after evaluation of their marching and playing performance from the spring camp, academic performance from the previous semester, as well as continued monitoring throughout the season. B) Members who are alternates may have a chance to fill a vacant marching position as they become available. Positions become available as the members assigned to the position encounter attendance problems, eligibility problems, performance inadequacies, failure to meet financial deadlines or physical injuries. More specifically, a student may be assigned to alternate status when their name appears on the probation or ineligible list. Should there be a computational error, it is the students’ responsibility to provide written proof from their teacher in order to retain their position. C) Band staff members assign alternates to the open positions based on many factors and instrumentation will be adhered to when possible. Directors have final say regarding all personnel decisions. D) Student UBPC account balances could also effect starting and performance positions. Accounts must be kept up to date and in good standing. E) Alternates/Shadows are still full members of the organization, must abide by all rules, and attend all full member obligations. F) Alternates/Shadows that maintain an acceptable performance level will participate in game performances whenever possible. 15) Buses A) Loading

i) Members will load in a prescribed orderly manner when instructed. B) Seating i) Members may be required to sit in designated seats previously chosen by the students.

ii) Seating rules for some trips may differ from other trips. Directors will notify members of the process for each bus trip. iii) Generally, members are permitted to sign up to request specific seats and seatmates on specific buses. Members who fail to sign up will be assigned a seat and bus by the directors.

iv) Stay seated when requested to do so and when buses are in motion. C) Chaperones i) Chaperones ride on buses. ii) Members are expected to respond appropriately to directions given by chaperones. D) Unloading i) Upon arrival, all members and chaperones are to stay on the bus until further instructions are given. ii) Orderly unloading of buses is expected. E) Cleanliness i) All buses should be left clean upon completion of trip. F) Equipment i) All students are responsible for taking all belongings and equipment off of bus at completion of trip. 16) Rehearsals A) Please enter rehearsal calmly and quietly. Hats and gum are not allowed in concert band. Gum is never allowed in rehearsals of any kind. Take your assigned seat with necessary instruments, music, and equipment. B) Cease talking and making noise when the director requests. C) Warm-up should take place per normal instruction of the director. D) Return instruments, music, and equipment to storage upon dismissal by the director. Each member should store his or her own items. Lockers should be kept clean and orderly at all times. E) Often there are specific rehearsal clothing requirements. Proper notification will be given for rehearsal clothing needs. (black/white, show shirt/black, etc…) 17) Football games (marching band) A) Report times will vary with the football schedule, and will be announced well in advance. Students should keep game days free from other scheduled activities. B) Members will change into FULL uniform in a facility on campus. Once dressed in uniform, all members will remain in FULL uniform for the entire event. NEVER wear a “partial” uniform, unless instructed by the directors. C) Instrument cases will not be needed in the stands for a performance, except in the event of inclement weather. D) All instruments and uniform parts should be CLEAN and in good condition. Instruments should be cleaned regularly to remove the excess dirt that accumulates when playing outdoors. E) Members are not permitted to leave prior to dismissal at any time, unless excused by the director PRIOR TO THE PERFORMANCE. This requires a written note from a parent. F) While seated in the stands, only members are allowed in the band seating area. G) The band will always sit in assigned seats and sections. H) Attention will be given to the Band Directors and Drum Majors when they are standing in front of the band. I) We play only as a group in the stands. Solo performance is strictly prohibited. No honking or hacking! J) No inappropriate cheers. Organized cheers, planned ahead of time, or done with the cheerleaders are permitted. These must be approved by a director prior to a ballgame. K) Members should remain calm in order to avoid accidental damage to the instruments. L) In order to move from place to place in a rapid manner, we must be able to give instructions to the group in an organized manner. Everyone will give full attention to staff members, chaperones, or to the Drum Majors when instructions are being given. M) Members will ride buses back to Union following away games (except members who have been released to their parents, with prior written approval) and will be released after the announcements. N) Members are personally responsible for loading and unloading their own equipment from trucks and buses. O) No non-uniform hats, bandanas, or accessories are allowed. P) Members should never leave the band without permission. Groups will be allowed to take brief restroom breaks as needed. Q) No eating or drinking is allowed in the stands or in uniform other than water.

2013 – 2014 RENEGADE REGIMENT

UNION BAND PARENTS CLUB AGREEMENT

Please READ CAREFULLY and THROUGHLY. You and your Renegade Regiment member

are accountable for all rules and procedures in this document. This document covers two areas: 1.)

Student Participation, and 2.) Union Band Parents Club (UBPC) Participation

The Renegade Regiment consists of very dedicated and talented student musicians who

perform at all home football games, most away games and in band competitions both inside and

outside of Oklahoma.

The Renegade Regiment is a representative of Union Public Schools. The Renegade Regiment

shall represent Union Public Schools with the highest degree of integrity, sportsmanship and

cooperation among themselves, the student body, faculty, and with other band members and visiting

bands. A high level of commitment to the band is necessary in order to maintain a position in the

Renegade Regiment.

Student Participation

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Academics and Eligibility

A. Students who participate in extracurricular activities must also maintain their eligibility

in accordance with OSSAA regulations and the Department of Education of the State of Oklahoma.

All band members will be governed by the eligibility rules of the Oklahoma Secondary Schools

Activities Association and Union High School. (See Eligibility section of Policies and Procedures in

Handbook.)

B. Grade checks will be done each week in order to determine eligibility. A band member

falling below the required grade point requirement will not be allowed to travel with the band until

his/her grades are brought up to the acceptable grade point level.

2. Rules and Regulations

A. Discipline

dismissal from the band: smoking, use of alcohol or other drugs, fighting,

unsportsman-like conduct, using inappropriate language at school, practice,

games, competitions, and inappropriate physical contact.

(ii) Any band member assigned to In-School Suspension for the first time will not

be allowed to participate in the next event. The band member may be required to

schedule of events is in this handbook. Band members are expected to adhere to all rules and

Failure to be on time to rehearsal may result in disciplinary action.

In addition to morning rehearsals there will be additional after school, evening, and weekend

rehearsals are mandatory for band members unless excused by the band director. In order to be

excused from rehearsal, the member must have been absent from school due to illness, family

emergency or have prior consent from the director. As soon as a band member knows that he/she will

Union Band Parents Club

1. Student Financial Responsibilities

There are MANY opportunities in which you can participate (i.e., working concessions,

offset these costs. Each band member has the opportunity to raise as much money as possible to

diminish his/her own bill. It is the responsibility of the band member and his/her parent(s)/guardian(s)
