David S. Dockery was elected the 15th president of Union University on December 8, 1995. Since that time the university has seen an increase in student enrollment from 1975 in the Fall of 1996 to 2900 in 2005. The number of donors to the university has increased from around 2000 to 3900. The significant increase in giving to the university during this period has included ten of the largest gifts in Union’s long history. Dr. Dockery is providing leadership for a major five year strategic plan called Union 2010: A Vision for Excellence. The plan will be enabled by a $110 million campaign, of which over $70 million has been raised.

During his tenure the university has seen a strong increase in commitment to excellence in teaching and scholarship. Union has been listed among the top tier institutions in the South each of the past nine years by U.S. News and World Report. Union has also been recognized during this time by Peterson’s Competitive College Guide, the Time/Princeton Review, and Templeton’s Colleges that Encourage Character Development.

The university has added several new degree programs including undergraduate majors in digital media studies, engineering, physics, sports medicine, political science, and ethics, among others, and graduate programs in business, intercultural studies, nursing, and education, including the doctor of education program and a graduate program in nurse anesthesia. Faculty development programs have been greatly enhanced and the breadth of student services has been visibly increased. A new campus master plan has seen the addition of two residence halls, the Miller Tower, Jennings Hall, Hammons Hall, the Fesmire baseball/softball complex, an athletic fieldhouse, and a soccer complex. Construction began on White Hall, a new 63,000 square foot science facility in 2005. A branch campus was established in Germantown, TN in 1997, which offers programs in education, business, and nursing.

Dockery is the author or editor of twenty-five books including The Holman Bible Handbook, Biblical Interpretation Then and Now, Theologians of the Baptist Tradition, and Shaping a Christian Worldview. In addition he has contributed to nearly thirty others including some of the most important reference books of the past decade such as The Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels, The Dictionary of Paul and His Letters, The Holman Bible Dictionary, and The Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology. He is the author of almost 200 articles, chapters, and book reviews. A much sought after speaker on issues of higher education and cultural issues, Dockery has been invited to present lectures at numerous colleges, universities, and seminaries across the country.

In 2002 Dockery was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He serves on the board of directors of several civic groups and local foundations. Over the first eight years of the program, White has compiled an overall record of 81-61-8. From 1999-2003, White has led Union to six consecutive seasons of .500 or better soccer. During his tenure, White has also coached the Bulldogs to five NCCAA MidEast Region Championships and one NCCAA National Championship (2003). Coach White’s most successful season was the 2000 season as he led that team to a .709 (17-7) regular season winning percentage, the highest for Union soccer. Union’s defense boasted the 3rd lowest goals against average in the country and the offense included a player that finished in the top five in the country for points per game average.

White, a native of Alabama, earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Birmingham-Southern College in 1989. In doing this, Union became the first ever, first-year program to qualify for the National Christian College Athletic Association’s (NCCAA) national tournament.

His second season at the helm was truly historic in 1999. The Bulldogs achieved their first ever national ranking when College Soccer Weekly ranked the team #1 in the country for two weeks in September. They also spent several weeks ranked in the NAIA top 25. In addition, the Bulldogs achieved the longest winning streak in school history when they started the season with 11 straight victories. UNION UNIVERSITY Season Outlook / Summary

www.uu.edu/athletics Union University Men’s Soccer Media Guide - 15

The 2004 season for the Union University men’s soccer program proved to be one of the most successful seasons in terms of a NAIA postseason finish. In this, the seventh season of varsity competition, the Union Bulldogs advanced to the NAIA Region XI Tournament for the first time in men’s soccer history.

Union battled through the season to finish with a 9-9-2 overall record and 2-2-1 conference record. Union started the season 2-0 with wins over Lambuth University and St. Gregory’s University. Only once more during the season did Union win back-to-back games. However, on the other side of the coin, Union only produced one losing streak in which they lost more than one game in a row. That was a three-game skid from Sept. 8 through Sept. 16, with two of those losses coming to NCAA Div. II opponents and the third coming to TranSouth No. 2 Cumberland University.

Entering the TranSouth Conference Tournament, only the top four teams in regular season play participated, and Union found themselves as the No. 3 seed. In the first round, Union evened the score versus Cumberland with a 1-0 win to boost the Bulldogs to the championship game for the second time in their seven year history. In the finals, Union lost 1-0 to top seed and nationally ranked Martin Methodist. Union then earned a bid to the NAIA Region XI Tournament for the first time. For the third time in the season, Union had to play conference foe Cumberland as they met in the opening round of the region tournament. Like the time before, Union earned a 1-0 win to advance to the semifinals. In the semifinals, Union battled the six-time NAIA National Champions and eventual region champs Lindsey Wilson College to a 3-0 loss to end the Bulldogs’ season.

Union earned several individual honors during and following this historic season. Sophomore Gareth Munro and freshman Benny Crozier, both of Scotland, earned TranSouth Conference Players of the Week one time each. Munro also earned an NAIA Region XI Player of the Week honor once during the year. Three players from Union made the TranSouth All-Conference teams led by Crozier as the lone first team All-Conference performer. Sophomore Brett Martin of Jackson and freshman Bobby McColl of Scotland each were named second team All-Conference players. Crozier continued to rack up honors as he was named to the NAIA All-Region XI team, NAIA All-American Honorable Mentioned, as well as, being named the TranSouth Freshman of the Year.

The 2005 season for the Union University men’s soccer program begins with great expectations and excitement. Last season’s efforts produced the most successful postseason in Union soccer history. In addition to their runner-up finish in the TranSouth Conference Tournament, the Bulldogs earned their first ever trip to the NAIA Region XI tournament where they earned a win and posted a semifinal finish. Many players are returning from that team and should provide the necessary leadership and direction to build on those successes in 2005.

Of the 23 players on the 2005 Union Bulldog varsity soccer roster, 17 of those players are returning from a year ago. Head Coach Dr. Darin White has added six new and talented players to the mix in hopes of taking the next step towards a conference championship. Included in the six newcomers on the varsity squad are five freshman and one junior.

Union’s upper classes make up only seven of the 23 spots on the roster. Union’s senior class is the smallest with just two players. Robert Stinson and Marko Pavlovic are both returning players that have contributed greatly over their careers. The junior class has five players including four returning players. Duncan Nicol, Mark Forrest, Christopher Prentice, and Gareth Munro are all returning players who have each been starters for the majority of their careers. Kirk Childers, a junior college transfer, marks the only newcomer in the junior class.

The sophomore class makes up the largest class on the 2005 varsity roster with 11 players, all of which are returning players. This is good news for Coach White who has seen these freshmen make major contributions already in their young careers. The group includes last season’s TranSouth Conference Freshman of the Year, as well as, an All-American, All-Region, and All-Conference performer in Benny Crozier. Crozier has been named this season’s Team Captain by his teammates. Bobby McColl also earned honors during his freshman season as he was named an All-Conference performer. In addition to Crozier and McColl, the sophomore class has Chris Lean, Clayton Stockett, Colin Bonner, Scott Sinclair, Craig Clark, Michael Pugh, Kyle Sanders, John Michael Ryall, and Nikola Djordjevic. Crozier, McColl, Lean, Sinclair, Djordjevic, and Clark each saw major minutes as freshmen last season. Finally, the freshman class on the varsity roster has five players. Cody Curtis, Matthew Lynn, Graham Stirling, Wagner Oliveira, and Jordan Hall fill out the rookie class of 2005.

Looking at this team, several of the key spots on the field are filled with experienced players. Stinson and Lean have formed a great competition for the starting goalie spot over the past few years; however, the senior Stinson will get the nod between the posts to start this season. On the offensive side of the ball, Crozier, Munro and McColl will be the ones called on to lead the scoring attack. However, according to Coach White, freshman Vagner Oliveira will step in at the striker position as on of the top newcomers on the team. Defensively, Sinclair and Pavlovic have proven they can lead the defense to the high quality that Coach White stresses from his teams.

In the 2005 TranSouth Conference Preseason Coach’s Poll, the coaches in the league picked Union to finish second in the regular season standings. According to Coach White, this team is well capable of making that kind of run, however, he also believes that this team could easily challenge for the conference title.

Union adds women’s soccer team, builds soccer stadium & athletic field house

An expanded soccer program and construction of a new soccer stadium and four sport field house are underway for Union University’s athletic department.

This season, Union launched a women’s intercollegiate soccer program at the varsity levels, with a junior varsity program to begin in the fall of 2006. Brandon Boylan, who as a student helped start the men’s soccer program at Union, has been hired as the women’s soccer coach.

In addition, this season the men’s soccer program began a full junior varsity team. Junior varsity soccer was offered on a limited basis in the fall of 2004.

“We are expanding our soccer program in response to the national growth trend that has been going on in our nation for several years in regards to soccer,” said Union men’s soccer coach Darin White. “Soccer has grown in both participation and in fan and student support.”

To accommodate these expansions, Union will build a lighted competition soccer field with Blue Tag Certified T-10 Bermuda turf that will be finished during the fall. This will give the university two lighted soccer fields, which

Union will make available for community use as well.

Also in the works is a new 18,000-square foot field house that will support both the men’s and women’s soccer teams, the men’s baseball team, and the women’s softball team. The facility will include a 9,000-square foot turf room, locker rooms and showers for each home and visiting team, coaches offices and an athletic training room.

Construction on the field house is scheduled to be completed in late spring of 2006.

Funding for the soccer program and the field house has been provided by gifts from university friends and the athletic booster club. The lead gift of $500,000 was provided by Benny and Norma Fesmire and the Fesmire Foundation.

Union is seeking additional donations to help fund the athletic projects. For more information, contact Tommy Sadler at (731) 661-5218.

NAIA Champions of CharacterThe National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character program is designed to instill an understanding of character values in sport and provide practical tools for student-athletes, coaches and parents to use in modeling exemplary character traits.

Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Character program addresses character issues more comprehensively than any other national program for youth. The

program currently reaches hundreds of thousands of students on nearly 300 college and university campuses in North America and extends into their surrounding communities.

The NAIA Champions of Character program is an educational outreach initiative which emphasizes the tenets of character and integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but for younger students, coaches and parents in our communities.

Coaches, parents, administrators and community partners all have a role in developing students of character. The NAIA Champions of Character program brings them training, guidelines and behavior models to create positive environments that promote personal growth and fun sport activity.

Champions of Character is a program of the NAIA designed to promote character development in youth and change the culture of sport.

The NAIA developed the Champions of Character program in response to the growing problem of deteriorating standards of integrity in sports and society. At a time when all of sport has experienced increasingly abhorrent behavior by athletes, coaches, fans and parents, NAIA Champions of Character raises the standards for positive youth development in athletics and academics.

The NAIA has been informally teaching character development through athletics for decades. Now our core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship are addressed comprehensively in the Champions of Character program.

The NAIA sees a tremendous need to supplement character development in younger students from the elementary through high school level. Lessons on character and integrity through sports are a natural extension of classroom learning.

UNION UNIVERSITY NAIA & Opponent Info.NAIA - National Association of Intercollegiate AthleticsThroughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate championship basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering first-rate athletics programs.

With its major emphasis on educational development, it was natural for the NAIA to strengthen academic eligibility requirements. All NAIA participating student-athletes must maintain a certain grade-point-average (GPA) while accumulating credit hours for a declared academic degree. Unlike other associations, NAIA student-athlete academic eligibility is monitored on a semester-by-semester basis.

The NAIA includes more than 60,000 participating student-athletes. The NAIA offers 24 separate championships in 13 sports including baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, football, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling.
