Unit 1 Lesson 1 Intro to Matter

Page 2: Unit 1 lesson 1 Matter quick notes/review

Matter

• Anything that has mass and takes up space

• House• Rock• Air• Atoms

Page 3: Unit 1 lesson 1 Matter quick notes/review

Mass

• The amount of matter in an object – measured in grams (g) or kilograms (kg)

• (how much stuff is inside something)

• We find mass with an electronic balance

• What has more mass?

• Ping pong ball Golf ball

Page 4: Unit 1 lesson 1 Matter quick notes/review

• The golf ball has more mass because it has more stuff in it. The ping pong ball has just air in it.

Weight

A measure of the gravitational force exerted on an object. Units = g, N

We use a scale or spring scale to weight

Where do you weigh more?

Earth Jupiter

Page 6: Unit 1 lesson 1 Matter quick notes/review

• You weigh much more on Jupiter because it has more gravity than Earth

Volume• The amount of space an object takes up is its

volume. Volume is measured in cm3 or mL.• We measure with a ruler for a solid object• We measure with a graduated cylinder for an

irregularly shaped object.

• What has more volume?

• A hot air balloon A birthday balloon

Page 8: Unit 1 lesson 1 Matter quick notes/review

• A hot air balloon has a greater volume that a birthday balloon

Density• Density is equal to the mass in a given volume – • units are g/mL or g/cm3

• Density determines whether an object will sink or float

• Objects more dense than 1 will sink.

• Which object will sink in water?

Page 10: Unit 1 lesson 1 Matter quick notes/review

The rock will sink because its density is great than g/mL
