• The LEAVES take in air and sunlight

• The STEM supports the plant

• The FLOWERS produce seeds

SEEDS• Seeds grow inside fruit. • Fruit protects the seeds. • Animals eat fruit and throw the seeds away. • New plants grow from the seeds.

IDENTIFYING LEAVES• Leaves have two parts.

They have a stalk and a blade. Some leaves are big and some are small.

• Leaves are different shapes. This is because they have different margins.

WHAT DO PLANTS NEED TO GROW?

• Water• Light (sun)• Air• Soil

WATER

• Water is necessary for proper germination of seeds.

• Plants need water for growth.

LIGHT

• Green plants need sunlight in to make their own food.

LIFE CYCLE OF A PLANT• Plants are born,

they grow, they reproduce and they die.

TYPES OF PLANTS• BUSHES

They are plants with a lot stems and leaves.

• GRASSIt is a plant. It is thin and bendy.

TYPES OF PLANTS• TREES

Trees are plants with a thick, hard stem called trunk. They have branches, leaves and twigs. Some trees have flowers and fruit.Trees have a lot of roots!

TYPES OF TREESThere are two types of trees: deciduous and evergreen.

• DECIDUOUS: Trees lose their leaves in autumn.

• EVERGREEN: Trees have green leaves all year.

PLANTS REPRODUCE• Flowers have stamens which contain pollen.

Wind or insects move the pollen to other flowers and the flowers reproduce.

PLANTS REPRODUCE• Some flowers turn into fruit. The fruit contains seeds.

The fruit matures and falls to the ground. New plants grow from the seeds.

THE USAGE OF PLANTS• Some plants are aromatic. Lavander smells

nice and we use it in perfumes.• Some plants are medicinal. • Some plants taste nice. We use them as a

condiment in cooking. – Examples: AROMATIC: Lavander & roseMEDICINAL: Lime blossom (tila) & camomileCONDIMENT: Parsley & oregano

PLANTS ARE IMPORTANT• Plants are very important. They give us the

vitamins and minerals we need to grow and stay healthy. Plants give us the oxygen we need to breathe, too.

• Wood from trees gives us heat and shelter, and we also make paper from trees. We make medicine from plants, too.
