LEADER Bible StudyJesus was on His way to Jerusalem when He stopped in a village. He was approached by ten men who had leprosy. The men didn’t get too close because according to Jewish law, their disease meant they were unclean. Leviticus 13–14 details the law regarding skin diseases such as leprosy. A person had to go to a priest for a diagnosis, isolate himself from others, and then—after healing occurred—return to the priest to be examined, cleansed, and restored to the community.

The men cried out to Jesus for mercy, and He commanded them to go and show themselves to the priests. As they went, Jesus miraculously healed them. This healing gave the men a new beginning. They would be able to return to their friends and family members. One of the men—a Samaritan among Jews—seeing that he was healed, returned to Jesus.

Luke tells us how this man responded: “He … gave glory to God. He fell facedown at [Jesus’] feet, thanking him” (Luke 17:15-16). This humility and gratitude were evidences of faith. The man’s response shows an understanding of God’s mercy and goodness. Jesus declared, “Get up and go on your way. Your faith has saved you” (v. 19). This man was healed not just physically but spiritually.

The Bible says all of us have sinned. Our sin makes us unclean, but we can cry out to God like the men with leprosy: “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” God hears our prayers and answers. (See Ps. 51:17.) The gospel welcomes all people who turn from their sin and trust in Jesus.

As you teach kids, emphasize that when we trust in Jesus by faith, He heals us from something greater than a disease; He saves us from our sins. We can give Him thanks and worship Him for making us new.

Jesus Healed Ten MenLuke 17

Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem when He entered a village. Ten men cried out to Him, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” The men did not come close to Jesus because they had a skin disease called leprosy.

Jesus saw them and said, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” Jesus wanted

the men to follow the law God had given to Moses. The law said a

person who had a skin disease had to go to a priest to be examined when the disease was gone. The priest and the person had to follow certain rules so the person could live a normal life among people again.

As they went, the ten men were miraculously healed.

One of the men, seeing that he was healed, went back to

Jesus. He praised God and fell facedown at Jesus’ feet, thanking

Him over and over. This man wasn’t a Jew; he was a Samaritan.Jesus asked the man, “Weren’t ten

men cleansed? Where are the others?” Only this man—a foreigner—had returned to give

thanks and praise to God.Jesus told him, “Get up and go on your way. Your faith has

saved you.”

Bible Storytelling Tips

• Use people figures: Display one figure for Jesus and ten figures for the men with leprosy. Move around the figures to reflect their movement during the story.

• Vary your voice: Use various voices for each speaker. Distinguish between Jesus, the group of men, and the one man who returned.

to worship Him, love Him, and show His glory.

Welcome timeGreet each kid as he or she arrives. Use this time to collect the offering, fill out attendance sheets, and help new kids connect to your group. Prompt kids to share about a time they shouted for joy because they were so happy. What other circumstances might cause that reaction?

Activity page (5 minutes)

Invite kids to complete “One in Ten” on the activity page. Guide kids to find the path that leads to Jesus.SAY • In today’s Bible story, Jesus encountered ten men. But

only one came back to thank Jesus! We’ll find out what happened.

Session starter (10 minutes)

OPTION 1: What time is it?Clear a large playing area for a variation of tag. Designate one player as the Doctor. Instruct him to stand at one side of the room with his back to the group. The rest of the players (“the patients”) should stand at the opposite side of the room. The patients will shout, “What time is it, Doctor?” The Doctor will respond by calling out an hour. (For

example, “It’s two o’clock!”) The patients will move forward a corresponding number of steps and then ask the question again.

At any point, the Doctor can respond, “It’s midnight!” Then the Doctor will turn around and try to tag a patient as they race back to the starting line. Tagged patients must join the Doctor as a tagger for additional rounds.SAY • In the Bible story we are going to hear today, ten men

had a disease. They approached Jesus to ask for help. Jesus told them it was time to go see the priests. That could only mean one thing: they would be healed!

OPTION 2: First aid relayPrint two copies of the “First Aid Scramble” list. Arrange medical supplies in a central location on the floor or on a table. (Tip: Prepare a scrambled supply list to reflect the supplies you have available.)

Form two teams of kids. Give each team a pencil, empty first aid kit, and a scrambled first aid supply list. Challenge kids to unscramble the names of supplies they might find in a first aid kit. When kids finish unscrambling a supply name, a player from the team may collect that supply and place it in the team’s first aid kit. The first team to unscramble the list and collect the supplies wins.SAY • A lot of injuries and common illnesses can be treated

with things we find at home or in a first aid kit. In the Bible story we will hear today, ten men needed healing. So they called out to Jesus. Listen carefully to hear what Jesus did.

[Pick up the Bible.] I’ll think on it some more, but right now I am excited to share with you a story I’ve been reading in the Bible. The people in this Bible story—and in the stories we’ll hear over the next few weeks—had problems they couldn’t fix on their own. But as you’ll see, they found an answer in the One who can make all things right.

Big picture question (1 minute)

LEADER • When you hear about the people in our Bible story today, I want you to think about this big picture question: Why did God create people?

Do you have any ideas? [Allow kids to respond.] e answer to our big picture question is, God created people to worship Him, love Him, and show His glory.

leprosy. The Jewish law said that their skin disease made them unclean, and they had to follow rules about staying away from other people. That’s why they didn’t get too close to Jesus. They stood at a distance and called out to Him.

What did the men say to Jesus? Find and read Luke 17:13. [Allow kids to read the verse and respond.] e men cried out for mercy. ey didn’t ask Him for money or food. ey wanted Jesus to have compassion on them and to heal them!

Jesus told them to go to the priests. at was unusual because that’s what they were supposed to do after they had been healed. But as they went, they were healed! When one of the men realized he was healed, what did he do? Look at Luke 17:15-16. [Allow kids to read the verse and respond.] e man returned to Jesus. He understood that the healing had come from Him. He praised God and honored Him. Jesus healed ten men, and one was saved. Missions moment (3 minutes)

LEADER • A long time ago, a missionary named Amy Carmichael felt God calling her to minister to people who were very poor. She lived among them and taught them the Bible. Amy wanted the people around her to have their bodies healed, but also be healed of their sin by trusting in Jesus as Savior. Let’s watch a video about Amy and learn more.

Play the missions video. Close in prayer, thanking God for missionaries like Amy Carmichael.

Key passage (5 minutes)

Show the key passage poster. Lead the boys and girls to read together Isaiah 53:4-5.LEADER • Long before Jesus was born, the prophet Isaiah

wrote about a Servant who would come from God. Isaiah said this Servant would bear our sicknesses and carry our pains. Jesus fulfilled this prophecy when He healed many people. [See Matt. 8:16-17.]

The Gospel: God’s Plan for MeAsk kids if they have ever heard the word gospel. Clarify that the word gospel means “good news.” It is the message about Christ, the kingdom of God, and salvation. Use the following guide to share the gospel with kids.

God rules. Explain to kids that the Bible tells us God created everything, and He is in charge of everything. Invite a volunteer to read Genesis 1:1 from the Bible. Read Revelation 4:11 or Colossians 1:16-17 aloud and explain what these verses mean.

We sinned. Tell kids that since the time of Adam and Eve, everyone has chosen to disobey God. (Romans 3:23) The Bible calls this sin. Because God is holy, God cannot be around sin. Sin separates us from God and deserves God’s punishment of death. (Romans 6:23)

God provided. Choose a child to read John 3:16 aloud. Say that God sent His Son, Jesus, the perfect solution to our sin problem, to rescue us from the punishment we deserve. It’s something we, as sinners, could never earn on our own. Jesus alone saves us. Read and explain Ephesians 2:8-9.

Jesus gives. Share with kids that Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again. Because Jesus gave up His life for us, we can be welcomed into God’s family for eternity. This is the best gift ever! Read Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21; or 1 Peter 3:18.

We respond. Tell kids that they can respond to Jesus. Read Romans 10:9-10,13. Review these aspects of our response: Believe in your heart that Jesus alone saves you through what He’s already done on the cross. Repent, turning from self and sin to Jesus. Tell God and others that your faith is in Jesus.

Offer to talk with any child who is interested in responding to Jesus. Provide I’m a Christian Now! for new Christians to take home and complete with their families.

to worship Him, love Him, and show His glory.

Key passage activity (5 minutes)

Tape a large piece of paper to a focal wall. Display the key passage poster and lead kids to read aloud Isaiah 53:4-5.

Separate the key passage into phrases that include key words. Choose several key words and call for volunteers to draw pictures on the paper to represent the key words. (A green frowning face might represent sickness, a crying face might represent the word pain.) Guide kids to say the key passage, using the illustrations as prompts.SAY • When Jesus was on earth, He not only healed the sick

and raised the dead, He also defeated sin and death once and for all when He died on the cross and rose again. Jesus will return one day and put an end to sickness and suffering forever.

Why did God create people? God created people to worship Him, love Him, and show His glory.

Discussion & Bible skills (10 minutes)

Remind kids that Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem. [Point to Jerusalem (H4) on the New Testament Israel Map.] Choose a volunteer to read aloud Luke 17:15.SAY • In this story, Jesus healed ten men, and one was

saved. The man who returned to Jesus in faith thanked Him and gave glory to God. He was healed physically and spiritually. e Bible says all of us have sinned. Our sin makes us unclean, but we can cry out to God like the men with leprosy: “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” God hears our prayers and answers them for His glory and our good.

Ask the following questions. Lead the group to discuss:1. What did the man who was healed realize about

Jesus? Invite kids to share their ideas. Point out the man’s reaction to his healing: he returned to thank Jesus. e man recognized that Jesus had healed him, and he praised God.(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Ps. 103:2-4.)

2. How should our lives change when we trust in Jesus for salvation? Guide kids to discuss the diff erence between a person who is forgiven and someone who is unforgiven before God. Regardless of their outward behavior, people who do not trust in Jesus are guilty before Him. ose who trust in Him are declared righteous and have complete forgiveness and eternal life. Help kids identify that a believer’s life should be marked by gratitude and worship for what Jesus has done.(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Heb. 12:28.)

3. What should we do when good things happen? What should we do when bad things happen? Emphasize that when we experience God’s grace, the best way to respond is with worship, thanking Him for what He has

Option: Retell or review the Bible story using the bolded text of the Bible story script.

Activity choice (10 minutes)

OPTION 1: Types of housesPrint the “Types of Houses” printable and tape the

pictures around the room. Invite kids to stand next to the house they would choose to live in. Let kids explain their choices. Then stand next to the rundown shack.SAY • Missionary Amy Carmichael chose to live in the

worst neighborhoods and the poorest slums. She wanted to live closest to the people she was trying to help. She lived in places no one else even wanted to visit and started Bible studies there. God used Amy Carmichael in powerful ways. She saw many people turn to Jesus and be saved.

Ask kids if they would be willing to obey if God called them somewhere to live in a house that isn’t very nice. Acknowledge any hesitancies or questions about giving up comforts for the sake of the gospel.SAY • As you grow and become more like Jesus, He will

change your heart to want to obey Him and go where He wants you to go. You can be a part of God’s mission to share the gospel with the world!

OPTION 2: Thank-you notesDistribute construction paper and art supplies. Encourage kids to write thank-you notes to people who have given them a gift. Emphasize that the gift may be a physical gift—

[Allow kids to respond.] God is good, and He gives good gifts. The Bible says that every good gift comes from Him. Sometimes God blesses us through the generosity of others. In all things, we can thank God for His love and care. God’s greatest gift to us is His Son, Jesus, who died on the cross and rose again so we can have forgiveness and life with God forever.

Journal and prayer (5 minutes)

Distribute journal pages and pencils. Guide kids to think about and answer the questions listed on the page:

• Are there any promises in this story to remember? How do they help me trust and love God?

• How does this story help me to live on mission better?

As kids journal, invite them to share their ideas. Then pray, thanking God for sending Jesus to save us from our sins. Praise Him for making all who trust in Him new.

As time allows, lead kids to complete “Made New” on the activity page. Kids should use the key to decode Jesus’ words to the man He healed.
