Task One

Page 2: Unit 51 alex nesbit

The movie magazine, Empire. Containsdifferent film reviews and various ads for thetarget audience. Their target audience seemto be around the age of 18 and up due tosome of the adverts seem to involve some likecars, clothing alcohol and movies. The adsmostly contains DVDs/Blu-ray which is wellfitted with the magazine because it relevantand people might consider buying them whenreading the magazine. When it comes tosocial status you could say that it would rangefrom C to E because most of the royal familywouldn’t go for such things but people whowatch movies on a week basic would probablyinto this which would be a person like mewho enjoys watching movies.

This magazine is gaming and contains gamereviews and stories on gaming, such shown on thecover; “how to build your own arcade” and “insideNaughty Dog” this is a gaming company thatproduce games such as Uncharted as it shows thatit is the main story it shows that when it says “Thestory behind the biggest game of the year”. Whenit comes to the adverts of the advert it seems it ismostly relevant to the genre in that inspect gamingit features a few games which could identify theage group of audience most of the games were 18so but there was one game that was a 9 so, that Iguess it is the minimum age and the maximumcould vary depending on if you like gamingbecause gaming for computing such has beengoing on for over 60 years so if there are anypeople still living to tell their tales of their gamingexperiences that they still enjoy the new games ofthis generation. There were other ads too but theyconsist on other magazines so it was hard toidentify their target audience on that because theyadvertised other genres too. For the social class itwould be the same for the empire magazinebecause you don’t hear about the royals playingcomputer games in their spare time.

Now I will analyse and discuses how the audience’s needs aremet by; Text, Colour, Design and layout and genre codes andconventions. So first there is text, this insist on what kind of language itconsists of such as informal or formal language and the fontthat it uses. As for the sizes you can see there are over 5 sizesfont colour scene to be red, black and white. It seems formalwith no slang used in and it shows its main story as theavengers it attracts the audience because it the film that comesout the next month with exclusive as you can see on the badgewhen it says ‘20-page marvel exclusive!’ The audience wouldmostly read on when looking at the different size fonts andwords to be intrigued on what the stories are about such as‘How to top the biggest superhero movie ever made’ this maymake the audience feel as though it can’t be beat “theirfavourite superhero movie”. Then there is the double pagewhich I'll analyse, the most noticeable thing is the big ‘A’ as adrop cap this could refer to the avengers as they use a similarlogo for most things in the film and is also used on the cover ofempire magazine, also can see the red text which can bereferred to a subhead. Other than that don’t think there isanything for it. It could attract the audience using the drop capbecause they would see it in the movie and feel a connectionfrom it.

Text

ColourLike I said in the previous slide the colours for the font

consist of; black, white and red. The other colours are of thepicture which features colours like; blue, gold, green, purpleand silver. It attracts the audience because it suits well withthe title which is red originally and seems to go in a patternas starts from the top with other films down to the names ofactors and actress it seems as though the pattern goes; red, white, red, white, red. The badge on the left middle of thecover has all three colours but that the only object that easysee other than the banner like object over the mastheadwhich also share the same colours. This would attract theaudience because its not vivid with colours and easy on theeyes for older viewers, therefore it works well on the frontcover. For colour on the two page spread seems to be similarbut takes the colours on captain America other than that itsabout it for colours.

Design and Layout

Using Guttenberg principle this consists of; Primary Optical

area, Terminal area, Weak Fallow area and Strong Fallow rea. Theway we look at it is also called the axis of orientation this justmeans that looking at the cover from the top left to the bottomright. First is the Primary Optical area, as shown it shows a fewmovies that are out this year but more importantly there is thebeginning of the masthead and the date and price is there. Thenacross to the strong fallow area, this consist of the other half ofthe masthead and a banner to the right corner showing anotherstory. As you go down to the weak fallow area you can see thecast of the main story and there is badge it also feature the firstbit of the main story line and a few celebrities at the bottom. Finally there is the Terminal area which features the last of themain story title but more importantly it features the barcode. Sooverall you can see that the page is well structured and attractsthe audience looking at each object making the audience lookinside. For this it simply article on the left side and the mainpicture on the right this would be because its a small article andit the start of the it.

Genre Codes & Conventions

This would consist on mise en scene, style, language and

anchorage. So lets start with mise en scene, as shown the imageare the avengers this indicates that this is there main article, toadd to that they use sort of Repetition where it says ‘ Moreheroes! More action! More robots!’ this would do alot for thismagazine to get audience because the avengers are well knownmaking people want to read about the upcoming film. Alsothere are different stories to with name drops at the bottom togets peoples interests with that with films at the top just toshow what else they have got for their audience to read. Thereis also a few small badges and a banner to show there stories incase they didn’t seem to like the stories on the cover. So overallas it shows its clear to see that it meets the audiences needbecause the picture of the avengers makes fans want to readabout what happening in the story and find sneak peaks fromthe film. For the two page spread I have probably alreadymentioned the previous slides most that there is to need toknow about it when it comes to how the audience will beattracted to it because of the drop cap and because of thepicture of captain America.

TextNext is the Edge magazine, so for starters, you can see that

the bigger the font the more important it is, for examplethe biggest text is the masthead letting the audienceknow that edge is the magazine, then its the main article, then lesser story and few titles to put in to place. Thelanguage use seems to be formal with no slang.Something that caught my was the text over themasthead it stands out because it seems its in bold andseem to be the only text that is in bold which seems tome that it is one of the main stories other than the maingame that is advertised on the cover, other than thatthere is only one title underlined maybe so some sort ifimportant to some fans. This would bring in thereaudience depending on the story making theminterested to read on. It seems this page has alot morethings than the previous one I analysed so for referencecheck the diagram I created a few slides back to see whatexactly it has but an overall of it would be that is formalgoing into detailed on the story of the game as it alsofollows with shots of the game using captions, drop capsquotes, it would attract the audience because theinformation that you can read makes the audience wantto read making it better for the reader.

Page 13: Unit 51 alex nesbit

Colour

The colour scheme seems to be red, white and few

other colours for the background is black and thenyou have the photo which is a person’s face so it hasskin colours with light and shadow and shoulder sshow his shirt which seem to be a shade of blue. Itvery smooth with the text because it makes it easy toread but also still show off the good colouringworking well with the image, I would say that thecolouring could have something to do with the mainstory because its the colour scheme to the game sothey used the same colour for their front cover toshow that it goes well to advertise it. It seems to bevery similar to the front cover so not much to sayabout it but it works well and connects well with thefront cover even though it isn’t the same article.

Page 14: Unit 51 alex nesbit

Design & Layout

The layout seems to be the similar to the previous one with

having masthead in the strong fallow area and the primaryoptical area, this also includes the story and a title to showoff the magazine and the website of the magazine to checkout more news from previous magazines. Then when yougo down can see the background picture of the character,on top of that there is the title with a kicker, then at thebottom you finish off with the other cover lines and abadge identifying the issue of the magazine. It is wellstructured for easy readers so that the people reading itwould have to look inside to find out more about thestories because it doesn't reveal to much. For theGuttenberg principle, it has a selection of photos on allarea, all based on the game ‘until dawn’ you can tell thatbecause primary optical area has the title of the game andheadline then you have some of the captions that are nextto their appropriate image, it is well designed very similarto the cover making the audience appeal to it by reading iteasy enough, from left to right.

Page 15: Unit 51 alex nesbit

Genre Codes & Conventions

For this one there is only one character for the image, it

is really neat and tidy so it attracts the audiencemaking the audience look at the page and wonderwhat's inside but with that look at the image andthink how amazing gaming technology has come tocreate such a realistic face for gaming compared tothe first game of the franchise. Other than that thereisn’t much to show as it keeps from telling you alot soyou can look inside to read more about theinteresting articles that it holds. Finally for the twopage spread there are shots of the game whichrelevant to the caption and the text, also showing offa famous actor like Hayden Panettiere people whoare familiar with her she is in things like Heroes butshe was in scream 4, so she came from one horror tothe next, this could show that she is well suited forthe role. Overall it would attract audience using theimage to tease the game but also giving detailed storyon the game so that people can read before theydecide to the game.
