Object clauses with that

To say what we know, think, believe, agree, etc., we can use that followed by an object clause. We often omit that, especially in speech.

Some educators believe that the more children watch TV commercials, the more materialistic they become. I disagree that commercials are bad for children.

Page 4: Unit 6 A variety of viewpoints Module 3. Grammar

Find the object clause in the passage.

a.One estimate says a typical Asian child sees more than 10,000 minutes of TV commercials a year. (line7)

b.Some educators believe that the more TV commercials children watch, the more materialistic they become. (line18)

c. I disagree that commercials are bad for children. (line53)

d.This explains why the ‘Magic Babies’ are one of the world’s best-selling toys, ever. (line58)

1.动词宾语有句子充当,这个句子叫做宾语从句。2.带宾语从句的一般是表示说话人的想法、意见、观

点的动词,如 know, think, believe 等。3. that 在宾语从句中只起连接作用,不担任句子成分,

因此可以省略。4.在口语中,如果宾语从句较短,则 that 经常省

略。 Do you know Professor Wang is ill? 你知道王教授生病了吗?

5.有些动词,如 tell, inform, explain 等的宾语从句可以做直接宾语,接在间接宾语的后面。 He told me that he knew nothing about the car accident. 他告诉我他对这场车祸一无所知。

要点提示 1

Page 6: Unit 6 A variety of viewpoints Module 3. Grammar

6. 有些动词,如 think, consider, find 等先接先行词 it +

形容词,再接宾语从句。 I think it necessary that

we ask for our teacher’s advice on how to do this

project. 我认为有必要问问老师关于如何开展这个课题的意见。

主句和宾语从句的时态要前后一致。如:主句谓语动词是过去式,则从句的谓语动词也要相应用过去时态。

Page 7: Unit 6 A variety of viewpoints Module 3. Grammar

7. I found nothing wrong with what he had said. (NOT: I found nothing wrong with what he says.)

8. He said he would prepare for a trip next month. (NOT: He said he will prepare for a trip next month.)

9. 在表示“命令、建议、请求”等动词( suggest, recommend, insist, request 等)后的宾语从句中,要用虚拟语气,即“ should+ 动词原形”,如: He suggested that we (should) make a decision as early as possible.

Page 8: Unit 6 A variety of viewpoints Module 3. Grammar

要点提示 2

1.动词后面可以接“疑问词 + 宾语从句”。此时,宾语从句的语序为陈述句语序,而不是疑问句语序。疑问词不可以省略。

2.在这些句子中,有些动词可以先接间接宾语,再接“疑问词 + 宾语从句”。间接宾语也可以省略。He asked (the doctor) what food was good for his mother’s health. 他问医生哪些食物对她母亲的健康有益。

3.介词也可以接“疑问词 + 宾语从句” The old man wrote a book on how young people should view their lives. 那位老人写了一本关于年轻人该如何看待生活的书。

Ida and Suzy did a survey about a TV programme they help produce. Use the verbs in the box and the notes below to complete the conversation. The first one has been done for you.

However, _____________________________________________________________Ida: That’s good. At least some of the teenagers can understand the language. Did anyone like the programme?

Page 12: Unit 6 A variety of viewpoints Module 3. Grammar

Suzy: Yes, _______________________________ _____________________________________Ida: Hmm. That’s nice to know, but it’s only a small number of teenagers who think that. How do the rest feel about the programme?Suzy: _____________________________________________, and _____________________________________________.Ida: Oh, dear. We must do something about that.Suzy: ____________________________________________________________________________Ida: Yes, that’s a good idea. Let’s have more.

sixteen per cent think that the programme is interesting and enjoyable

twenty-four per cent feel that the programme is boring ten per cent explain that they

don’t listen to our programme

Twenty per cent suggested that the programme should have more music

Object clauses with question wordsTo say what we know, think, believe, explain, etc., we can also use the question words, what, where, which, who, why or how, followed by an object clause. Please note that object clause beginning with question words do not use the same word order as question do.

This explain why the ‘Magic Babies’ are one of the world’s best selling toys, ever.
