Puritans-established the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1620-the government was a theocracy (based on God)-they wanted to reform the church from within

Pilgrims/Separatists -established the Plymouth Colony in 1620-withdrew completely from the church

Myths- traditional stories, often about immortal beings, that ware passed down from generation to generation

Origin Myths- stories that tell the origins of earthly life

Tribes-Onondaga, lived in Central New York, stories- The Earth on Turtle’s Back- Modoc, lived in Oregon and Northern California, stories- When Grizzlies Walked Upright- Navajo, lived in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah, stories- The Navajo Origin Legend -Iroquois, lived in North Eastern U.S., stories- from The Iroquois Constitution

included: didn’t see daylight for a long time, in chains, just kept healthy enough for them to survive. - wrote it in big words to try and show that just because he was black he wasn’t stupid.

Anne Bradstreet

Wrote a love poem to her husband- “To My Dear and Loving Husband”-published in 1650- used aa,bb,cc,dd,ee,ff rhyme scheme

Poetry shows the Puritan way of explaining stories and the voice of the bible.

Her love to write poems was frowned upon by the Puritan people and considered, “ unladylike”
