Unit Title: Number and Algebra; Measurement and Geometry

Year: 8 semester one 2017

Teacher/s: Mr J O'Connor, Mrs K Palmer, Ms Lee-Anne Schiller

Head of Learning Area: Mrs Anna Burrows

This semester, students perform calculations to determine perimeter and area of parallelograms, rhombuses and kites. They name the features of circles and calculate the areas and circumferences ofcircles. Students solve everyday problems involving rates, ratios and percentages; profit and loss; andvolume of prisms. They make sense of time duration in real applications; iden$ry conditions for thecongruence oftriangles and deduce the properties of quadrilaterals. Students also use efficient mentaland written strategies to carry out the four operations with integers.

Year 8 students begin the yearwith lnvestigating Scientifically. ln particular scientific method, graphing, the use of laboratory equipment, basic laboratory skills and working salely within the laboratoryenvironment are revised. In Physical Science students classify energy into its different forms and describehow energy transformations and transfers cause changes within systems. This then ties in to Earth andSpace Science where sludents describe how energy driven processes within the Earth's structure formsedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks over a variety of timescales.
