Running for the Gold Billy Mills

1 When I was seven years old, my mom died. One day not long afterward, my dad and I were fishing. He reached across and stroked my arm. “Son,” he said, “you have broken wings. But I’ll share something with you, and if you follow it, someday you can have wings of an eagle.”

2 “Find your positive desires,” he told me. “With desire comes self-motivation, with self-motivation comes work, and with work comes success.”

4 Just before the next season, my father died from a stroke. As my cousin Butch and I sat on the porch steps outside my home, he tried to ease my pain. “Although you can’t play baseball very well,” he said, “I bet you’ll do something famous in sports.”

5 “Why do you say that?” I asked.6 “All the great athletes I’ve read about had

to overcome hardships,” Butch said. “They were either poor or orphaned, and people made fun of

some of them. All three of those things have happened to you, Billy.”

7 Sparked by his words and my father’s advice, I tried a multitude of sports. I tried boxing. My boxing record was zero wins and six losses. I tried basketball. In my first high-school game, with just 31 seconds left to go, I got a jump ball and went for the basket. My name echoed off the walls: “Billy! Billy!” What I didn’t realize was that I was going toward the wrong goal! I scored two points and lost the game for us.

8 My dad always said, “If you can go to the center of your soul, you’ll find wisdom.” In time, I discovered that running took me to the center of my soul. Desire, self-motivation, and work led me to the Olympics.

9 In 1964, I competed in the 10,000-meter race. With 100 meters to go, I was in third place, and we were lapping some runners. I was boxed in by the lapped runners. Then, the German runner moved aside to let me pass. I glanced at his uniform as I raced by. On it, I saw an eagle, and remembered my father’s words. They had come true.

10 In 1964, Billy Mills won an Olympic gold medal in the 10,000-meter race. To this date, no other American has won this race. Mills shares his inspiring stories in books and as the national spokesperson for “Running Strong for American Indian Youth.”

Billy Mills

(born June 30, 1938) is the second Native American ever to win an Olympic gold medal. (Jim Thorpe won 2 gold medals in the 1912 Stockholm Olympics but they were later taken away because it was learned that he had played two seasons of minor league baseball prior to the Olympics. The two gold medals were later reinstated in 1983 see Jim Thorpe ) He accomplished this feat in the 10,000 meter run at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics making him the only American ever to win the Olympic gold in this event. Many consider his victory in 1964 to be the greatest upset in Olympic history.
