Why is observationImportant?

Class Discussion, PowerPoint

Students divided in groups by array interaction inventory for mystery box activity.

Is it ok for a hypothesis to be proven wrong? What happens when hypothesis are proven wrong?

Power point, examples, Lab activity

Students divided in groups by array interaction inventory for the lab activity.

How do we applyThe sci. methodTo a problem?

Problem solving Students grouped by Sternberg learning profile, and given their activities according to Sternburg for problem solving activity.

Summarizing Strategy

Why is observation important in the scientific method?

Group students in 4 according to their array. Give them a mystery box that contains an object, such as a marshmallow or piece of gum. They will not be able to see the item, but will have to record as many observations as they can about the item using other senses. The teacher will then allow the students to open the box and see the item. Class discussion of observations and ancient myths. Spontaneous Generation

Ticket out the door: Students answer why observation is not enough to draw a conclusion.

Summarizing Strategy

Is it ok for a hypothesis to be proven wrong? What happens when hypothesis are proven wrong?

Students stay in their array groups. Teacher discusses different inventors and how their inventions sometimes came from their mistakes and how some persevered until they reached their goal. (ie Dyson and Edison, post it notes and Velcro) They Did Not Give Up , Mistakes that Worked Clips from Mythbusters Students are then given a lab in which to apply the scientific method. They are given the ingredients for silly putty, and must work through the scientific method to create an experiment to make silly putty. Lab Procedure Lab Rubric Checklist Teacher asks why observation is not enough to draw a conclusion, students write answer and hold up their answers when finished. If they are correct, they may pack up. If they are incorrect, teacher will redirect.

Summarizing Strategy

How do we apply the scientific method to a problem?

Students are organized into groups according to Sternberg. (Analytical, creative, and practical) The groups have to come up with a topic to be approved by the teacher. They will research their problems online and as a group decide on the topic. The students must use the scientific method to solve the problem. The analytical group must write a letter to their senator to give their solution, the practical group must make a table, graphic organizer, or chart to give the solution, and the the creative group would create an advertisement for their solution. Rubrics: Letter to the Senator, Solution in Chart Form, Advertisement

Quiz: The students will justify why each step of the scientific method is important.
