    1.MetalMul-toolThiscomponentismadeoutofmildsteel.Thisparttookalong)metomakeduetothelargeamountofmetalfilingthat

    hadtobedone.Firstthepiecehadtobecutfromalongmetalbartothedesireddimensionsof100x50mm.The2DAD

    metalmul)-tooldesignwasprintedoutusingaprinter.Thispaperwasthenusedasaguidetoshowwhereeitherdrilling,

    sawingormetalfillingneededtobedonetocreatethedesiredtool.Igluedthepaperguidetothemetalandthencentre

    punchedmul)pleholesintothedesiredareas.Theythenhadtodrilledthroughwith5mmand12mmdrillbit.Themul)ple

    holesaredrilledclosetogetherinordertokeepthefilingworktoaminimum,andalsousedahacksawtocutanypartsof

    themetaloffwhichwereeasiertocutinsteadifdrilling.Ithenfiledthemetaldownusingmetalfilesandmetalneedlefiles

    tomaketheedgessmooth.Italsotakesoffanyexcessmetaltoachievethedesireddimensions.Tofinishthemetaloff,

    wirewoolwasusedtocleanupandtoremoveanygreasethemetalhadle_onit.IalsousedBrasso,whichpolishesthe

    metalandthenitfinallyneedstobecleanedwithglasspaperwhichgivesitaaCrac)veshinyfinish.Whenallofthese

    processeshavebeencompleted,differentshapeshavebeencutoutofthemetalallowingthemtoworkasamul)-tool.

    2.PlascHandles(2.12.4)Thiscomponentisdesignedonacomputerusinga.A.D(omputeraideddesignprogramcalled2DDesign.Whenthe

    designwascompleteitwassenttothe.A.M(omputeraidedmodellingmachine.The.A.Mmachinebeingusedwasa

    lasercuCer.ThelasercuCercutthedesiredshapefromapieceofA3sizeacrylic.UseofthelasercuCerensuredthatthe

    cutwouldbeaccurate.ThisisbecausethelasercuCerisaprecisionmachine,andbeingcomputercontrolled,thereisno

    roomforhumanerrorwhenthispartiscutout.

    Whentheshapehasbeencutoutfromthemachine,itwasnecessarytopushouttheblankplas)choleswherethelaser

    hadcut.Theplas)cspacers(Part3werethengluedtotheplas)chandles.Plas)cHandlesPart2.1wasgluedusingaraldite

    toaplas)cspacer(Part3,whichinturnwasgluedtoPart2.2.Thesameprocesswasrepeatedfortheplas)chandle2.3,

    2.4andtheplas)cspacer(Part3separa)ngthem.

    3.PlascSpacers(2)ThiscomponentwasonceagaindesignusingaADprogramandwascutoutusingaAMmachine,whichwasthelasercuCer.TheADandAMprocessesfortheplas)cspacersareiden)caltothoseoftheplas)cspacers.

    dimensions.Thiswouldeventuallygivethedesireddimensionsbutaswitheverymethodavailable,alotofmetalfillingwouldneedtobe

    done.EvenifIdidthecutasaccuratelyaspossible,thecutwouldnotbeasaccurateasitcouldbe.

    2.AnothermethodwhichIcouldhaveemployedishainDrilling.Thisiswhenyoucentrepunchmul)pleholesintothemetal,andthendrillthroughthem.Themul)pleholesaredrilledclosetogether.Iwouldthenuseahacksawtocutanyexcessmetaloff,andwouldthenfilethe

    Itwouldbevery)meconsuminghavingtomanuallycuttheacrylicoutbyhand. AmoreaccuratecutwillbecreatedbyusingthelasercuCerinsteadofcungbyhand,duetohumanerror. Theacrylicwouldthenneedtobesandeda_erthecungtomakethesidesoftheacrylicsmoothandtoalso

    correcttheacrylictothecorrectdimensions.

    Iusedthelasercu'erinsteadofmanuallycu_ngtheacrylicoutbyhand.Advantagestousingthelasercu'erare

    thatIcoulddesignthepartquicklyonacomputer,andthencutitoutusingaC.A.M(Computeraided

    modelling)machine.Inthiscase,Iusedthelasercu_ngmachine.

    EventhoughitwouldtakemetodesignthepartonaC.A.D(ComputerAidedDesign)program,itwouldbemore

    meefficienttodesignthepartaccuratelyonacomputerthancu_ngitoutmanually.Thecomputerprogram

    Iusediscalled2DDesign.

    AnotherreasonwhytheLasercu'erisamoreeffecveoponisbecausethelasercu'erisaprecisionmachine.

    Thereisnoroomforhumanerrorwhenthepartiscutout.Thismeansthatusingthelasercu'erisquicker

    andismoreaccuratemeanstocreangthispart.

    Thispiececouldhavepossiblybeenmadeoutofwood,howeveraswoodisrela)velyso_,itwouldbepronetodeforma)onwheneithercung,pulling,or)ghteningotherhardermaterials.Thiswouldleadtodamageofthemetal.Anotherdisadvantageisthatyouwouldberestrictedtothetypeofitemsthat

    youcouldhold.Arequirementofthispartisthatthemul)-toolmustberobustenoughtotakegeneraldaytodayuseandabuse.Itmustbeabletocope

    withgreatamountsofpressuretobeusedforgeneralpurposeac)vi)es.Asmetalisahardmaterialandwoodisarela)velyso_materialthedesignof

    themul)-tooltendsitsselftobemanufacturedfrommetal.Thereforewoodwouldntbethepurposeswerequireitfor.

    Wechoosetousemildsteelasitisharderthanwoodandcanbeusedundergreatpressureandwillnotdeform.Steelisverystrong,butittakesagreatdeal

    of)metomanufactureasallworkismanualandisnotprocessedbyacomputer.Asaresult,theextra)metakenbythemanufacturingofthemetal

    sliderisbeneficialasitmakesthemul=-toolamuchmorerobustproduct,allowingittobeusedforgeneraldaytodayuse ,whichisstatedinmyoriginal

    2.12.4PlascHandles1. Thefirstmaterialiswood.Woodisfairlystrong,light,andiseasytoworkwith.However,inourproductspecifica)onitstatesthattheclampIssafetobe

    usedbychildren.Woodispronetosplinters,sothismaterialisnotidealfortheproductspecifica)onprovided.

    2. AnothermaterialIcouldhaveusedwasSteel.Steelisverystrong,butitwouldhavemadetheclampveryheavy,costlyandwouldtakeagreatdealof)metomanufacture.BychoosingsteelIwouldhavehadless)metocreateothervitalcomponentpieces.Anotherdisadvantagetosteelisthatifitis

    contactwithwaterandair,itcanbepronetorust.

    Thedecisionwasmadetouseacrylicfortheplas)chandles,whilstusingothermaterialsforotherspecificcomponentparts.Ichoosetouseplas)c

    becauseitislight,rela)velystrongandiseasytoprocess.TheadvantageofusingacrylicisthatIcouldquicklydesignthecomponentonacomputer,and

    thensendittoalasercuCer.A.Mmachine.Theadvantageofusingacrylicoverusingsteelinthemanufactureofthepartisthatitremovestheneedfor

    intensivemanualworkincungandfiling.Asplas)cdoesntsplinteritalsohasanimmediatesafetyadvantageoverwood.

    ThereforeIwasabletos)cktothespecifieddimensionsonmytechnicaldrawingssheet.

    AllcomponentpartsarewithinthespecifiedsizesandIkeptthequalityofmydimensionshighbymeasuringtwice,andonlycungonce.Byusingthis

    method,theaccuracyofourdimensionswillbemoreaccurateandfewerreplacementspartswouldhavebeenneededtomanufacture.Thismaintainsahigh

    standardofqualityandless)mewillbeneededtoreplaceormodifypartstofulfiltheiroriginalneeds.UsingthismethodensuresthattheclampHasbeen

    manufacturedtoahighstandard,asstatedintheproductspecifica)on.

    FormWhenevalua)ngtheformofthetool,wemustinves)gatewhetherthematerialsusedweresuitablefortheiroriginalpurpose.Beforewestartedtheconstruc)onoftheproductweresearchedwhichmaterialswouldbesuitableforeachpart.Allthepartswereanalysedandassessedinthealterna)ve

    materials&materialjus)fica)onsheet.Throughoutthemanufacturingandtheconstruc)onoftheclamp,allpartsservedtheirpurposewellandnoobvious

    flawshaveappearedusingthechosenmaterials.Asaresult,allmaterialsused,appeartobesuitablefortheproduct.Usingthecorrectmaterialsmeansthat

    thetoolisrobustenoughtotakegeneraldaytodayuseandabuse .Nomaterialsalterna)veswererequiredtoallowtheclamptoworkmoreeffec)velyand

    assuchIbelievethebestmaterialshavebeenchosen,thereforetheclampfullyfulfilsthisvitalrequirement.

    Allcomponentpartshavesmoothedges;allburrsremovedandhavenosharpcornersbydesign,soastolimitpoten)alcausesofinjury.Fromthestartofthis

    project,amainprioritywastomakesurethetoolissafelysecuredinsomecasingmethod.ThereforeIchoosefortheplas)chandlestorotatearound,from

    whenthetoolisfullyopentoencloseandhidethemetalmul)-tool.Bydoingthisthemetalmul)-toolsitssafelyinsidetheplas)chandles,whichthenactas

    humansinvolvedintheprocessingofthemetal,thusthereisnohumanerror.Acrylicischeaptopurchase,andiseasilyprocessedbyaAMmachine,likethe

    LasercuCerweusedsoitcouldeasilybemadeformassproduc)on,atalowprice.Overall,themul)-toolthereforefullyqualifiesthatitcanbebuiltand

    constructedforalowprice,sothatitcancomefreewithamagazine.

    FunconThemainfunc)onoftheclampisthatitwillrequiretohavemanyuseful&essen=altools. Thetoolachievesitspurposebyhavingmanygeneralpurpose

    toolscapableofmanyfunc)onsforac)vi)es,andthereforeitalsomeetstherequirementspecifiedintheproductspecifica)on.Thismeansthatthemul)-

    Ihavethoroughlyenjoyedmakingthemul=-tool.Ihavecompletedallnecessaryworkwhichneededtobedonetothefully

    completethetool.IfeelthatIhavefinishedthewholeproducttoahighstandard,whichisafundamentalpointofthe

    wholeproject(andspecifiedintheDesignSpecifica=on).Ihavefurtherimprovedmyknowledgeonhowtousecertain

    machineryanddesigningproductsonpaperandusingCADprogramssuchas2DDesignandGoogleSketchUp.Ihavealso

    completedeverycomponentpartwithintheset=me,keepingthequalityofmyproductshighandthedimensionsofmy

    partsaccuratetotheiroriginaldimensions.OverallIwouldsaythatthisproductisamassivesuccess.Ihavethoroughlyenjoyeddesigning,crea=ng,usingandevalua=ngthisproduct.Iamlookingforwardtothenextproject,andtofurther

    improvemyknowledgeandtocreatenewandinnova=veproducts.

    IfIweretomakethiscomponentagain,Iwouldhavelikedtohavebeenmoreeffec=vewithmyuseofavailable=me.Much
