Inspired to Worship
Called to Serve
United in Fellowship
Thank You, God
In response to all the blessings that we have
received from God, we have opportunities to
thank God as we make commitments through
MHUMC for 2017. We have received 46
commitments and 41 Time and Talent forms as of
October 25th. This is a great start! Our hope is to
have Thank You, God Commitment Cards and
Time and Talent Forms from each family or
member. Pray about how you will thank God
through the ministries of MHUMC. If you need a
Commitment Card and/or Time and Talent Form,
contact the office or use those in the yellow
envelopes in the pew racks. Bring or mail it to the
office, or place your completed commitment in the
offering plate and join in as we offer our thanks to
God.
Stacey Everett is our volunteer Children’s Ministry
Team Leader (CMT). You may contact Stacey by
calling or texting at 601-955-8282 or e-mail at
Sunday School 9:45 Each Week
Toddlers and Twos: The nursery teaches our toddlers
and twos Bible stories using picture cards. In November
they will learn about Ten Commandments, from
Exodus.
3 year old-3rd Grade: The children will learn that God
Provides: In the Wilderness, Ten Commandments, A
House for God, and The Peaceable Kingdom.
4th-6th Grade Bible Scholars Class: We are using the
Submerge lesson plans that offer a one-year Bible
survey by following the Christian Year. In October, we
dive deeper into The Kings and Prophets: Being
Anointed by God, Praising God, Living Faithfully and
God’s Vision.
Acolyte Training
Acolytes serve each Sunday by lighting the candles and
assisting Pastor Vicki when she needs special help in the
worship service. At MHUMC, children in grades 2nd—
6th may serve as acolytes. Our acolytes are:
Preston Campbell Aden Lowry
Nathan Everett Galen Walter
Philip Jaynes J P Williams
Ariana Layton Stephanie Winstead
Moira Layton
An additional training will be offered Sunday November
6th at 9:45 am.
Trunk or Treat
Trunk or Treat will be Sunday, October 30th in the West
Parking lot. Children, wear non-scary costumes and join
in the fun! We will have candy, games, a sketch artist
and hot dogs. See label page for more information.
Youth Ministry Update
We continue to look for a part-time youth
director to lead our youth ministry. In this
time of transition, Trey Fontaine is serving as
interim youth director. He and Lori
Smithhart, Youth Coordinator, are working
together to provide adult coverage for Sunday and
Wednesday night Youth Group. Joey Fontaine continues
to teach Youth Sunday School each Sunday at 9:45. If
you know of qualified candidates who might be
interested in the youth director job, please share this
information with them. For a job description and/or
application requirements, contact Danny Layton, SPRC
Chairperson, cell 601-826-2264; e-mail
[email protected]; or McLaurin Heights UMC, 325
Mary Ann Drive, Pearl, MS 39208.

ADULT MINISTRY
Sunday School for Adults meets at 9:45 am.
Most classes use the Adult Bible Studies book. In
November, we will study Alpha and Omega, from
Revelation.
New Upper Room
Where the World Meets to Pray
The Upper Room daily devotional magazine offers short,
daily devotions that apply the message of scripture to the
challenges and opportunities of everyday life. The
November/December issue cover depicts Mary holding
Jesus. In the center are Advent Worship Litanies, to be
used at home for the four Sundays of Advent and
Christmas. Advent calls us to ask ourselves, “Will we be
ready, and how will we prepare to welcome God with
us?” The new editions are located on the benches outside
the sanctuary, in the wall rack on the Sunday School area,
and in the Narthex. You may also receive it by email by
signing up at upperroom.org.
What Happens to the Old Upper Rooms?
The UMW Wesleyanna Circle collects used Sunday
School literature and Upper Room devotional books.
Each quarter, the material is taken to the Central MS
Correctional Facility where the Chaplain uses it with the
inmates. There are baskets in the adult Sunday School
hallway where the books can be left when you have
finished with them. This is a simple way to share God’s
word with those that may have no other way to read it.
You are Invited to Adult Advent
Wednesday Night Bible Study
Starting November 9th, Pastor Vicki will lead an Advent
study. What a great way to prepare our hearts for
Christmas! Everyone is welcome to attend on
Wednesdays in the Conference Room from 6-7 pm. This
study will meet November 9th, 30th, December 7th, 14th
and 21st.
Be Active; Live Longer (BALL) Club
Ball Club Trip to Lorman, MS
On Thursday, October 20th, the BALL Club boarded
the church bus and headed to Lorman, MS to eat lunch at
The Old Country Store. The buffet included fried chicken,
ribs, pork chops, chicken tenders, chicken & dressing,
turnip greens, mustard greens, green beans, sweet
potatoes, corn on the cob, field peas, rice & gravy, tossed
salad, cucumber/tomato salad, potato salad, cole slaw, mac
& cheese, biscuits, and cornbread. Desserts included
peach cobbler or blackberry cobbler with or without ice
cream. Now, is your mouth watering? The owner, Arthur
Davis (Mr. D) entertained us with his singing.
After lunch we rode by the Ruins of Windsor near Port
Gibson, then took a drive to the Mississippi River where
we viewed a sign that showed line markings of past
floods. Our next stop was the Grand Gulf Military Park
which is located 10 miles northwest of Port Gibson in the
unincorporated area that is now the ghost town of Grand
Gulf. This 400 acre landmark is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places and includes Fort Cobun &
Fort Wade, the Grand Gulf Cemetery, a museum,
campground, picnic area, hiking trails, an observation
tower, and several restored buildings. The museum
contained early photographs, maps, scale models, and
authentic artifacts. On the way home, we stopped at
Rocky Springs Methodist Church.
The following people went on this trip: Shirley
Rogers, Fay Green, Sherry Wilson, Marion Heard, Mack
Robinson, Martha Robinson, Bennie Rogers, and Patsy
Rogers.
Watch the bulletin for the next scheduled trip.
Mutzie
Thou Shalt Laugh
Comedian Mutzie will be in concert at Shiloh UMC
Friday, November 4th at 7 pm. His concert will be free.
Seating is on a first come basis. Mutzie has twice been
named the New Orleans Entertainer of the year. Three
times, he was awarded the prize as “Funniest Person in
Louisiana”. He has performed in 287 countries. He was a
regular on Carnival Cruise lines until he recently decided
to be a full-time Christian comedian. He has performed in
churches coast to coast. Pastor David Slaughter of Shiloh
invites MHUMC to Shiloh UMC, located at 2394 Shiloh
Road in Pelahatchie, between Brandon and Pelahatchie on
Shiloh Road to hear Mutzie.
ADULT MINISTRY
Harvest Lunch
Harvest Lunch will be Sunday, November 13th.
Bring your favorite side dish or dessert. Contact Betty
Wade if you can help with set up or clean up at 601-906-
3475.
Harvest Lunch at MHUMC started out around 12
years ago as a Thanksgiving Dinner the Sunday before
Thanksgiving. In the very beginning, it was planned as
a homecoming event to bring the member’s families
together. There was a consensus that it was the time of
the year we should celebrate fall and our blessings. The
men always provided the meat and others brought side
dishes and desserts. It was moved to earlier in the
month due to the conflict of cooking for MHUMC and
cooking for the family Thanksgiving in the same week.
It became the Harvest Lunch we will have November
13th this year.
Feed the Pirates
On Friday, October 21st, MHUMC fed
approximately 135 Pearl High School football players,
coaches, cheerleaders and dance team members before
their game with Jim Hill High School (which they won,
57-14.) There was enough left over to share with the
Pearl Fire Department. Stan Croxton and James Bostick
cooked the hamburgers when Joey Fontaine was called
away. Many people (approximately 22) helped in the
kitchen, in decorating the Fellowship Hall, bringing
food, and the unglamorous, but needed, cleanup.
Thanks to all who helped make Feed the Pirates a huge
success. Sissie Haynie, Hospitality Chairman
Join the Church November 13th
During morning worship November 13th, we will have
new members join MHUMC. Invite your family and
friends to celebrate this joyful event, and ask them to
stay for our Harvest Lunch following worship as our
guests.

Laity Sunday November 6th
Teresa Cothen keynote speaker
Laity Sunday calls the church to celebrate the ministry of all
lay Christians, as their lives are empowered for ministry by
the Holy Spirit. The ministry of the laity flows from a
commitment to Christ’s outreaching love. Lay members of
the UMC are, by history and calling, active advocates of the
gospel of Jesus Christ. Every layperson is called to carry out
the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20); every layperson
is called to be missional. The witness of the laity, their
Christ-like examples of everyday living as well as the sharing
of their own faith experiences of the gospel, is the primary
evangelistic ministry through which all people will come to
know Christ and the United Methodist Church will fulfill its
mission.
The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church,
2012, par. 127, 264.2
Veteran’s Recognition Sunday

MHUMC members and constituents who have died since

We will also light an additional candle and provide you the
opportunity to say aloud the names of other loved ones and
friends who died in this past year, but who were not
members of MHUMC. The office records indicate that
Richard Warren is the only member who has died since last
All Saints Sunday. If you have any additions, contact the
