From the Pastor: Father Paul Shovelain

As the Father loves me, so I also love you!

“I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice,

holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. Do not conform yourselves to this age

but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God,

what is good and pleasing and perfect.” Romans 12:1-2 (2nd Reading from Mass this Sunday)

St. Paul encourages us to unite ourselves to God in our 2nd reading this weekend. He knows that we are sinners and thus need the mercy of God. Yet, God’s mercy makes us holy and pleasing to God. By cooperating with God’s grace and goodness we unite ourselves to Jesus Christ and his Church. We can make a living sacrifice of ourselves and shine as lights on our dark world. So, what does this look like? Our schoolteachers coming back to teach in the classroom amid many un-certainties. First Responders and Health Care Workers continuing to serve on the front lines against this pandemic. Our church staff adjusting their hours and work to make sure we can maintain your safety and the cleanliness of our campus. All of us together taking precautions to protect those who are high risk. These are a few examples of living sacrifices in our world today. The last 6 months have been challenging, yet we can offer it as a living sacrifice with Christ as we are motivated by love of God and neighbor. The second half of this scripture passage invites us to live in hope and not be conformed to this age. There is a tension there as we need to follow just laws, yet we need to live as people of faith and hope. There is a lot of fear in our world right now. Christ casts a light on the world that allows us to see. We need to live in that light and follow his guidance. Thus, this year we are focusing on being “United in the Holy Spirit.” We need to be led by the Holy Spirit to make prudential decisions and trust that God is at work in our lives. Come Holy Spirit, fill our hearts, minds, and spirits with your love. Guide us always along the path of salvation. We offer ourselves as a living sacrifice to you knowing that you are at work in our hearts. May we be courageous in following you and transformed through our cooperation with your grace. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen. Please continue to pray for our leaders, that we serve sacrificially as St. Paul encourages us in our 2nd reading at Mass this weekend.

Celebrate SJB! Join us Saturday, August 29th at 7pm in the West Parking Lot for a bonfire and s’mores! Fr. Paul will give a short reflection and teaching on our patron, St. John the Baptist, as we celebrate his feast day. After the reflection we will pray the rosary together and then make s’mores. Parents are required to supervise children around the fire and s’more roasting. We will have s’more supplies safely packaged and ready to use for those in attendance. This is a great opportunity to get outside, pray, and socialize with fellow parishioners. Contact Fr. Paul with any questions. Please bring your own lawn chair.

Communion Appointments We realize there are many parishioners who still may not feel comfortable coming to Mass because of being in a large group. Therefore, we are again providing appoint-ment times to receive Holy Communion. We will begin appointments on the third Tuesday and Wednesday of the month, with times available in the morning and evening. The times for September are: Tuesday, Septem-ber 15 from 6:30 – 8:00 PM & Wednesday, September 16 from 10:00 AM – noon Please keep in mind that these appointments are intended to serve those parishioners who are at high risk for COVID-19 and for that reason do not feel comfortable attending Sunday or daily Mass.

Update Membership Information Does our Church database have YOUR family member-ship record correct? It is time for us to update our database with any changes, additions, or deletions that may have occurred in YOUR family over the past year. Have you changed your phone number? Have you moved? Are you preparing to move soon? Are all of your children still at home and are they all included in your membership record? Do you want your record published? If you have not already informed the Church Office about changes to your record, please contact Bonnie Haik at 651-633-8333 ext. 1210 or [email protected].

We are looking for NET Host Homes for this upcoming year!

This is a great opportunity to get connected to the par-ish – see what others are saying! • “It’s not a lot of commitment and they are so

grateful and pleasant! Fills your heart.” • “It was incredible having young, faith filled

adults to witness how their love of Jesus touched their lives.”

• “It was a great way for our kids to get to know people on NET.”

Please contact: Mikayla Anderson at [email protected] or Rita Arndorfer at [email protected] for more information and COVID-19 policies!

WELCOME BACK TO SCRIPTURE 2020-2021! FALL SCRIPTURE CLASS It will be wonderful to see you all, even with the masks. It has been a long time! Scripture for this fall will be the “SPIRITUALITY OF THE GOSPELS”. Our culture seems to mesh the terms, spiritu-ality and religion together. Spirituality is defined as an encounter with God causing a drastic change in our life journey. The fall class will look at each of the four evan-gelists and how their spirituality effected the way they wrote their gospel. It should be exciting! Classes begin on Wednesday, September 16th at 9:30 AM. Registrations can be found on the parish website www.stjohnnb.com SUNDAY MORNING SCRIPTURE This class will begin on Tuesday, September 15th at 9:00 after the morning Mass. The books will be ready on the morning of the first class. We will start our reflections with the 25th Sunday in ordinary time, which is Septem-ber 20th. You will receive a copy of the scheduled classes for the year. Registrations can be found on the parish website www.stjohnnb.com
