Report from Congregational Meetings
On June 2 and 3, the Church Ministry Leaders presented their draft strategic ministry plans to the congregation. After verbal presentations, those church members in attendance broke into small groups to review each plan in more depth. A facilitator for leading discussion and scribe for taking notes were assigned to each group. All notes were collected at the end of each session.
The Action Team then met to review the compiled notes and have captured the congregational feedback for each ministry plan, as presented below. If you would like to discuss these comments with Action Team members, please contact us through the church or e‐mail: [email protected].
Worship (Related Article on Page 9) • Responses seem evenly split between support for two services and concerns about
moving to two services.
• There is some concern about moving the 8:45 service out of the Harris Activity Center.
• There is reluctance by some members to worship in the Sanctuary.
• The Worship segment of the Strategic Ministry Plan is perceived to be very good.
• There is support for enhanced technology with caveat that it be appropriately placed so that it is not “in your face".
• The need for a "nourishing" room is affirmed.
• There is support for enhanced communication in worship related activity, professionalism in all areas of worship, and training of all persons participating in the worship service; e.g., ushers, greeters, acolytes, etc.
Connecting Ministry • Good plan in general.
• The terms 'Welcoming Center' and 'gathering space' should be better defined and explained.
• The reason for using the number 600 should be included as it pertains to adequate parking and space to accommodate persons close to a commercial kitchen.

Dear Congregation:
WOW! That’s all I can say! I certainly felt the love of all of you in an overwhelming way as I had my last Sunday here on June 6, and for my ordination on June 11. You blessed me with your presence, with your kind words, with a beautiful reception and lunch, with your gifts and most of all, with your love. I will miss First United Methodist Church so much! I am looking forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead with Ogden Friendship House, and I hope you will come visit sometime. Volunteers are always welcome at the new distribution center! I won’t be far away - and I will carry all of you in my heart. Diana
Congregational Items of Interest Continued from Page 1
• Transportation to cover our many needs should be included.
• Use of electronics and communication should be expanded and properly used, but not at the expense of the personal touch
Small Group Ministry • There was not a clear understanding of the definition of small groups, which lead many to wonder if their current
group qualifies or if they would have to change groups.
• Greater communication is needed around the definitions as well as sharing what small groups are available.
• Questions were raised on the tracking of participation and how the congregation will be placed into small groups.
Hands‐on Mission Ministry • Is the church trying to take on too much at this time? There seems to be a large list of items presented.
• Communicating and coordinating with other organizations may help the need for participants.
• A more definitive description of the outreach center is needed to determine how it differs from what is already offered in the community.
• The food pantry has been a good thing and should be expanded.
• There is real need for storage for all of the ministries.
Children’s Ministry • The Children’s Ministry is a high priority for the congregation who strongly agree with the plan as presented –
this ministry was deemed a need, not a want.
• Ensuring a safe and healthy environment for all children is vital.
• Having the children more connected to and participating in the worship services would benefit the congregation.
• It is important to relocate the nursery into the same building where worship is held.
• Keep Sunday School strong and expand offering to run concurrent with worship services.
Youth Ministry • Continue positive youth and scouting ministries.
• Current transportation is either too small or too big, need to obtain another bus to adequately serve the youth needs.
• Shower facilities would add significant value for visiting groups and existing youth programs.
• Youth activities would be greatly enhanced by the addition of a gymnasium.
• Expand youth services in the Harris Activity Center.
General needs as summarized from congregational meetings • Safety in all areas of the church.
• Training for leadership and specific tasks.
• Communication and providing information.
• Accessibility for special needs.
This is an exciting time of communication among FUMC Manhattan members. Please continue to share your ideas with members of the ministry leaders, Action Team and the Facilities Planning Committee.
Attention: UMW Members (especially members at large)

HELP KIDS IN OGDEN EAT! — The summer school program in Ogden has been cut dramatically. By working together, the Ogden Elementary School, with the Ogden Friendship House UMC, Boys and Girls Club and the Ogden Community Center, will host a summer school program for needy children in Ogden. A grant has been received to cover some expenses, but the cost of breakfast, which is normally provided for the children, cannot be covered. Needed items include dry cereals, fresh fruit, yogurt and milk for 35 children each weekday from June 7 through July 3. Please support this very important program by donating some of the needed items to the Ogden Friendship House. Many thanks!
Disciple Bible Study
As we look ahead to fall Bible studies, it will help us to know who might be interested in a Disciple Bible Study. Indicating an interest does not obligate you to participate. Below is a brief description of each class. For more information, contact Rev. Nancy (776‐8821, [email protected]). Official sign‐up will start in August. Childcare is available at no cost for all classes if reserved at least one week before the class.
DISCIPLE I: Becoming Disciples through Bible Study This study is the foundational DISCIPLE class. It is strongly recommended that you take this class before taking any of the other DISCIPLE Bible Study classes. DISCIPLE I is a 34‐week study that provides an overview of the entire Bible. Each weekly meeting will be 2½ hours and requires 20–30 minutes/day of independent preparation for the weekly sessions. You will read about 70% of the Bible during the course, from Genesis to Revelation.
DISCIPLE II: Into the Word, Into the World This 32‐week study selects specific portions of Scripture and delves deeper into them. The course concentration is on Genesis, Exodus, Luke, and Acts.
DISCIPLE III: Remember Who You Are Participants in this 32‐week study will read the major and minor Old Testament prophets (except Daniel) and the 13 letters traditionally attributed to Paul, and will draw on Deuteronomy through Chronicles to establish the historical context.
DDDISCIPLEISCIPLEISCIPLE IV: Under the Tree of Life IV: Under the Tree of Life IV: Under the Tree of Life This 32‐week study concentrates on Ruth, 1 and 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, Lamentations, Daniel, the Gospel of John; 1, 2, and 3 John; James; Jude; and Revelation.
Jesus in the Gospels While not part of the Disciple Bible Study series, this 30‐week study does have some similarities. Jesus in the Gospels focuses on the portraits of Jesus found in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. This study takes an approach different from the familiar “life and teaching of Jesus” approach of reading stories and accounts of what Jesus said and did. This study looks at the way each Gospel writer presents events and teachings and the picture of Jesus that emerges in each of the Gospels.

5 de Mayo Celebration at FUMC Manhattan, Kansas
We (Arely, and my husband Ryan) have been invited to the 5 de Mayo celebration for at least two years in a row, and it seems to me that the Amigos de Anapra group at First United Methodist Church in Manhattan Kansas, has decided that every year will be in every way possible better than the last. This year
there was an incredible wealth of chips and salsas (mine included) made with much love and the surreptitious hope of victory (which has been rightfully monopolized by the Funks, who have twice consecutively won). Mary Funk, dear friend, next year, your corn salsa is going
down!! (... to Lawrence, with me, if there is any left. It was delish!) I have always been an expert public speaker in Spanish but a terrible ball of nerves when addressing a large group in English. This year the task seemed even harder to complete, though I had the most wonderful reason to tear up. The love and support we experience every time we work beside FUMC is very difficult to explain. I saw God’s face in every man and woman I encountered – the love, the effort, the joy in their service and in their sacrifice. I felt like the basement of that church was an extension of Anapra. The room was dressed up for the occasion: musicians were playing Mexican music, cards, drawings, and letters from Susana Wesley school’s children, teachers, and from my parents, were being displayed. Two people, one of them Pastor Kay, talked about their experiences in Anapra, and I was the third. I can only reiterate my appreciation to FUMC, which has become in many ways an intrinsic part of the ministry my family started in Anapra: We love you, we think of you every day, and we keep each of you in our prayers. May the Lord continue to bless you and bring about the fruition of your work. May we continue to serve, love, and walk with the people of Anapra “ hasta que Él diga “ (till He decides). Congregational Items of Interest WORSHIP INFORMATION AND QUESTIONNAIRE
At the congregational sessions, the Worship Strategic Ministry Area proposed moving to two services both in the sanctuary as soon as July 1 if possible. The worship action and design teams have spent many hours in prayer, discernment and conversation in making the proposal, and they do so with much love for God and this church. Some reasons for the change include:
• Responding to the consultant’s report (October 2009) – John Laster recommended a refocusing of worship and the combining of the traditional services, and the team is open to the possibilities of this recommendation.
• Continuing the pattern of one preacher at all services – This pattern offers unity of the message in the congregation. In addition, the regular preaching pastor should spend approximately 15‐20 hours per week designing series and crafting sermons; our current staffing plan does not allow for more than one such pastor. Having the preacher stay for the whole service will offer more flexibility and creativity to the worship design and experience.
• Holding both services in the sanctuary – Doing so will aid in the connection of the congregation by encouraging folks to participate in the coffee time in Fellowship Hall. In addition, the contemporary service in the auditorium has almost reached the capacity where it does not have room to grow, and thus a larger space will invite more persons to worship.
As a result of congregational feedback, we are now planning to move to two services in August. To receive more input from the congregation, a short questionnaire will be distributed during all three worship services on June 20 and 27.
If you have questions, contact the Action Team or Rev. Kay.
