WHO WE AREThe United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945, after the Second World War by 51 countries committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations, and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights. The Republic of Kazakhstan became a member of the United Nations on 2 March 1992 (GA resolution 46/224) and there are now 193 members.

The United Nations system began its country-based operations in Kazakhstan in early 1993, after the conclusion of an agreement between President Nazarbayev and then Secretary-General of the United Nations Boutros Boutros-Ghali on 5 October 1992.

Within the United Nations System, every agency has its own area of expertise, focus and mission. The heads of these agencies form the UN Country Team (UNCT) led by the Resident Coordinator.
