Dear Friends,
This year marked important changes for Green Mountain United Way. I joined the organization in September of 2015 and together with the Board of Directors and staff, transitioned the agency and took steps to increase efforts to bring significant positive impact to our community. We are now moving forward stronger than ever to address specific needs in our priority areas of Education, Health, Financial Stability, and Community Caring through our traditional role as a community partner and by broadening our reach through innovative program development.
For 2015-16 we continued our work in Education and the early learning needs of young children. In the area of Financial Stability, we maintained our support of individuals through financial literacy education while creating the foundation to provide programs that directly support the needs of working families and communities. In Health, we took considerable steps in creating pathways that link our work to address the cycle of poverty, food insecurity and long term health effects.
Under our Community Caring initiative we continued the commitment to keeping our local community at the heart of the work we do by holding Days of Caring in Barre and the Mad River Valley, and Literacy Kit team building events to mobilize the power of giving time and sharing talents. We discovered the true heart of generosity through the outpouring of support for our Tatum’s Totes program which provides backpacks for children entering emergency foster care through the Department for Children and Families in the Barre and Newport Districts.
On behalf of everyone at Green Mountain United Way, we thank you for your continued belief in our work and the power to LIVE UNITED to create better solutions for every person in our community. I welcome your continued involvement, whether through the investment of time or treasure, and honor all the ways you have supported our work thus far.
With Gratitude,
Tawnya Kristen, Executive Director

GREEN MOUNTAIN UNITED WAY’S PRIORITY AREAS OF IMPACTEDUCATION HEALTH FINANCIAL STABILITY COMMUNITY CARING
We promote a high quality accessible system of care and education to ensure the success of all children. We do this through partnerships with Building Bright Futures Councils in our regions, our Promise Communities and through the creation and distribution of Children’s Literacy Kits in cooperation with local businesses and nonprofit partners.
We work to increase access to healthy food and physical activity and to increase knowledge of available resources for prevention and treatment of substance abuse. We work on regional health teams and Hunger Councils, and through collective impact partnerships including C4C in Caledonia/Southern Essex County and ONE Care in Newport/Northern Essex.
We support the financial health and well-being of all families with a special focus on working families. Through our Working Bridges™ program we work to improve job stability. We improve access to knowledge by providing Financial Literacy workshops and through the development of programs to bring more financial literacy education and support to our communities.
We engage individuals and partners in activities which enhance the quality of life in our communities. This work includes coordination of the Tatum’s Totes programs in Barre and Newport DCF regions, Volunteer Days of Caring, donations for basic needs, support of Vermont 2-1-1, and our Community Impact Grants and funding of partner agencies through designations.
