Phoniatrics is the medical field for communication disorders, concerned with functions and diseases of

voice, speech, language, hearing and swallowing. In practice, Phoniatrics is a multidisciplinary discipline

combining information from medical and non-medical sciences. In addition to general medical

investigations and treatment procedures, Phoniatrics encloses complex competencies in the fields of

cognition, learning abilities and rehabilitation procedures.

Program Aims: The aim of this program is :

1. To provide advanced theoretical studies and clinical work in areas of voice, speech and language and

swallowing founded in the degree of Master of Phoniatrics.

2. To develop areas of expertise and provide quality clinical services to individuals with communication

disorders in the community.

3. To remain competitive as future professional advances occur in the field.

4. To become a knowledgeable and skilled consumer of research and scholarship in voice, speech and

language, swallowing disorders.

5. To understands the importance and application of evidence-based treatment.

6. To become familiar with the administration and legislation of the health care system.

The candidate deals with the recent areas of articulatory and acoustic phonetics with

emphasis on instrumental analysis of speech. The course studies in details the 4 language

components: Phonology, Semantics, Syntax and Pragmatics. It includes the psychology of

language, and linguistic competence and performance.

The candidate will be able to:

1. Enumerate the acoustic characteristics of Arabic speech sounds.

2. Analyze acoustic characteristics of nasality.

3. Review acoustic analysis findings in speech disorders.

Voice Disorders II

The course covers the voice disorders and swallowing disorders.

• The student has to distinguish the different types of dysphonias and determine

symptomatology of swallowing disorders. He has to assess the voice of the patients. 1-Acquire specific knowledge in the epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, prophylaxis, clinical

physiology, diagnostics, differential diagnostics, therapeutics and rehabilitation of the voice

disorders that include:

a. Congenital voice disorders.

b. Developmental voice disorders.

c. Non-organic (functional) voice disorders with and without secondary organic lesions in the

larynx, including occupational dysphonia and also singers’ voice.

d. Dysphonia caused by hormones.

e. Dysphonia as a result of organic alterations in the larynx.

f. Voice disorders due to neurological and psychiatric diseases, including vocal fold paralysis.

g.Voice disorders after operation or trauma of the larynx.

2- Identify the developmental and aging processes as to voice, and swallowing.

3- Analyse and relate the results of all different items of the battery of investigations in order to

reach at an etiological diagnosis and possible differential diagnosis utilizing his/her theoretical

background that draws charts for different groups of aliments in the field of Phoniatrics.

4- Acquire specific knowledge in the epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, prophylaxis,

clinical physiology, diagnostics, differential diagnostics, therapeutics and rehabilitation of

the swallowing disorders (Dysphagia) due to problems in the oral, and/or pharyngeal

stages of swallowing (structural lesions, neurological disorders).

• The course covers language disorders.

• The student has to distinguish the different types of language disorders. He has to recognize the

types of hearing impairment, discriminate causes of delayed language development, describe

characteristic features of autism and identify the types of brain damaged motorly handicapped

children. The candidate should recognize linguistic features of each type of delayed language

development. He should describe characteristic features of aphasia and identify both apraxia of

speech and oral apraxia. He has to compare the various types of dysphasias, note types of agnosias

and identify features of dyslexia. • By the end of the course the candidate will be able:

1- Describe pathophysiological backgrounds of language Development.

2- Identify Phoniatrics deviance in each causes of Delayed language development.

• The course covers the speech disorders.

• The student has to recognize the types of Dyslalias, discriminate causes of velopharyngeal

incompetence, describe characteristic features of dysarthias. The candidate should identify the

etiology and type of dysarthria and describe the speech clusters of each type of dysarthria. The

candidate should outline etiology of stuttering, evaluate the symptoms and severity of

stuttering, specify the etiology and recognize characteristic features. • By the end of the course the candidate will be able:

1. Recognize the types of Dyslalias, discriminate causes of velopharyngeal incompetence.

2. Identify the etiology and type of dysarthria and describe the speech clusters of each

type.

3. Outline etiology of stuttering, evaluate the symptoms and severity of stuttering, specify

the etiology and recognize characteristic features.

• This course deals with the intervention and rehabilitation of different voice disorders using

pharmacological, surgical and training methods. It entails management of voice disorders and care of

laryngectomee and treatment of dysphagia. 1-Outline the therapeutic measures in the field of diseases of voice, and swallowing and apply them

surgically, pharmacologically and behaviorally in order to be able to draw and perform the strategy of

the therapy in the field efficiently.

2- Outline the role of pharmacological therapeutic agents in treatment of diseases of voice, and

swallowing in order to be able to describe them when needed.

3- Identify the role of prosthetic devices and aids in the therapeutic program for diseases of voice, and

swallowing in order to be able to use it efficiently when indicated.

4- Practice rehabilitation methods for speakers’ and singers’ voice.

5- Practice rehabilitation of the laryngectomized clients.

6-Practice rehabilitation methods in oro-pharyngeal dysphagias.

• This course deals with the intervention and rehabilitation of different speech disorders using

pharmacological, surgical and training methods. The candidate has to outline the communicative

intervention programs for hypernasality, dysarthias and dyslalia problems. The candidate should

implant treatment strategies for stuttering. 1- Acquire specific knowledge in the epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, prophylaxis, clinical

physiology, diagnostics, differential diagnostics, therapeutics and rehabilitation of the speech disorders

that include:

a. Organic and functional articulation disorders.

b. Nasality, including cleft palate.

c. Dysfluency (stuttering and cluttering)

d. Dysartheria due to neurological (central, peripheral) and muscular diseases.

2- Analyze and relate the results of all different items of the battery of investigations in order to reach at

an etiological diagnosis and possible differential diagnosis utilizing his/her theoretical background that

draws charts for different groups of aliments in the field of Phoniatrics.

3-Collect complete, clear and organized information about the client’s ailments in order to be able to

analyze it and formulate a preliminary idea concerning the etiological diagnosis of ailments.
