ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE FOR SUSTAINABLE ENERGY AND TECHNOLOGY
Environmental Science for Sustainable
Energy and Technology offers excellent
job opportunities. Government agencies
offer jobs in the development and
implementation of environmental
policies. The industry has
Environmental Health and Safety
positions on offer. There is also
a high demand for our graduates
from consultancies.
This course is aimed at solving environmental issues. Due to world developments
there is a growing demand for young internationally-oriented environmental
specialists. You could be one of them. Setting up an Environmental Energy Plan
for a multinational. Investigating new sustainable energy sources. Improving
air, water or soil quality.
In the first year we focus on maths,
chemistry, physics, biology and on basic
language and communication skills. We also
introduce the main environmental problems
in projects and courses. In the second
year, you will be assigned more advanced
coursework and work on more advanced
projects. New environmental areas of
interest will be introduced. The third
year begins with a 5-month individual
work placement. These work placements
range from working for an environmental
consultancy to performing research with
a research organisation or university.
In the second half of the third year,
you will follow the compulsory minor
in Environmental Consultancy. In your
fourth year, you can study the minor
in Sustainable Energy. Or alternatively
a minor in another programme or at
another university. In the second half
of the fourth year, you will complete
your graduation assignment.

INTERNATIONAL MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT
Maintenance professionals are active
at multinationals all over the world.
But also in small and medium-sized
companies. You will start working at
a company that utilises technical
systems, or at a manufacturer of
complex systems, as an adviser or
a project manager. The International Maintenance Academy
is an initiative by:
Aircraft. Power plants. Drilling platforms. All technical systems need to
be maintained. The larger and more complex the system, the more important
proper maintenance becomes. And the more difficult. A refinery, airport or
hospital cannot simply be shut down while a maintenance check is carried
out. This is what makes international maintenance management so challenging
and rewarding.
Technology forms an important part of
the programme. You will learn how to
design maintenance procedures and make
reliable predictions on operating life
and replacement of assets. You will
also learn how to assess safety risks
and maintenance tenders. Business
administration will become your second
area of expertise. You will learn how
to deal with management processes,
quality control and more. But also with
planning and budgeting, cost analyses
and logistical issues. Maintenance is
teamwork. For this reason we devote
considerable attention to management
and leadership in an international
environment. But also to ergonomics,
health and safety.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE SHORT TRACK
Your prospects are excellent. Government agencies look for graduates
for the development and implementation of environmental policies.
The industry offers EHS positions. Consultancies look for specialists
who know how to handle subjects varying from technical solutions to
environmental licensing to policy-making.
Society is faced with the challenge of sustainable development. We need
professionals who have the skills to engage in these developments. During
this course you will learn, apply and integrate various technical and
managerial skills to solve environmental problems. At the end of the
programme you will spend five months on a graduation assignment at a
company or organisation anywhere in the world.
The first semester focuses on chemistry,
English, Dutch and environmental subjects.
In the second and third semesters there are
two minors. Here you will be joined by other
students of Environmental Sciences. The
minor in Environmental Consultancy focuses
on solving common environmental issues.
Soil remediation. Water treatment. Air
pollution. All solutions need to be
presented professionally. For this you
need tools such as consultancy skills and
English writing and presentation skills.
These are part of the minor programme.
The minor in Sustainable Energy focuses
on the energy problem. The projects and
lectures are developed in close cooperation
with our Sustainable Energy research group.
During the fourth semester you will work
on an individual assignment. This is to
demonstrate your ability to function as
an environmental scientist.

MEDICAL RESEARCH AND BIOTECHNOLOGY
On completing the
programme you will
have both theoretical
knowledge and hands-on
laboratory experience.
This will give you an
excellent start on the
job market or for a
subsequent master’s
degree programme.
A huge amount of scientific research is carried out worldwide in the fields
of medical research and biotechnology. Researchers use techniques involving
molecular biology and biochemistry to gain more insight into the mechanisms
of disease. On the other hand, very similar techniques can also be applied
in order to engineer organisms and microorganisms or direct their metabolism
in such a way that they produce valuable products.
The two-year bachelor’s programme in Medical
Research and Biotechnology explores both
interconnecting worlds. The programme consists
of four semesters. It combines two “minor”
programmes - Biotechnology and Medical Research
- a 6-month work placement and a 6-month final
research project. This project is to be carried
out at an international research institute or
company. On completing the programme you will
have both theoretical knowledge and hands-on
laboratory experience.
This programme covers the following topics:
The subjects are presented in the form of
courses, master classes and laboratory training
sessions. Research projects are defined in
close collaboration with the professional
field, and are carried out by students with
comprehensive coaching from tutors.

At least three years of higher education in Architecture, Town Planning or related studies
TOWN PLANNING
After graduating you will
start a career in a company
involved in urban planning.
Or you will join an authority
that is responsible for
developing policy for the built
environment. You will become
an urban designer. In this
function you will analyse
urban areas and develop the
drafts for zoning and land use
plans. Or you will start as a
project leader and coordinate
policy development in relation
to urban areas.
This programme focuses on urban areas. Places where different parties live
and work together. As Geoffrey West – professor at Stanford University –
stated, urban population growth is the great theme of modern life. One
that’s unfolding all across the world. From the factory boomtowns of
Southern China to the sprawling favelas of Rio de Janeiro. For the first
time in history, the majority of human beings live in urban areas. How
do you develop these areas in terms of their function, design and the
quality of life they provide? Which stakeholders are involved? What rules
and regulations apply? And what is technically possible? As a Town Planner
you incorporate all this into your designs for the urban environment.
The facilities and buildings in an existing
residential area need to be improved or
renovated. As a town planner you design
an image quality plan and a zoning plan.
You develop the legislative provisions
and consult with the developer and other
interested parties. You then analyse
the residential area from different
perspectives and you draw up a zoning
plan together with the stakeholders.
During the implementation you ensure
that the original plans are followed.
You review and discuss whether the
project has achieved its goals. The study
programme comprises two semesters of
project-based and problem-based learning,
and a one-semester graduation assignment.
A double degree is possible if there is
a collaboration agreement between your own
university and Avans University of Applied
Sciences. Students who have studied
Architecture, Town Planning or related
studies for at least 3 years can follow
this programme. The final semester, leading
to a bachelor’s or master’s degree, can
be completed at your own university.
