The history of the University of ColoradodatesbacktotheearliestdaysofColorado

and precedes the creation of the state . At itsfirst session in 1861, the Colorado territoriallegislature passed an act providing for thecreationofauniversity inBoulder .Toestablishthe university, the legislature appropriated$15,000, which was matched by Boulderresidents . However, the formal founding wasdelayed for another fifteen years by the CivilWar .WhenColoradobecamethe38thstateintheUnion in1876, theuniversitywasdeclaredan institution of the state, and the Board ofRegents of the University of Colorado wasestablishedunderColorado’sStateConstitutionasitsgoverningauthority .

The University of Colorado Colorado Springshasarichhistoryasasiteandcampus .Manymillennia before any students began studyinghere, a small group of ancestral AmericanIndianssetupcampoverlookinganarroyoonthe west edge of what is now the campus .Remains fromapproximately 30 sites usedbyPlainsIndiansfromabout100A .D .to1400A .D .dotthecampusgrounds .Theculturalheritageoftheareaiswitnessednotonlyarchitecturallyand in diverse ecological phenomena butalso in the significant prehistoric archeologicalcomponents observable throughout thecampusacreage .Thedailydiscardedartifactsof Cragmor Sanitorium life -medicine bottles,crumbling foundations, andbrokendishes areintertwinedwithartifactsfromtheprehistoryoftheregion .

HenryAustin, forwhom thebluffs oncampuswere named, purchased a large part of whatis now the campus in 1873 to graze herdsof sheep . The first known building on thesite was a cabin built by the world-famousphysician, Dr . Edwin Solly . Dr . Solly sufferedfrom tuberculosisandmoved fromEngland tothe area, as the regionwas becoming knownforitshealthyclimate .Afteryearsofplanningforasanatoriumonthesite,Dr .Sollywasspurredinto action in 1902 when General WilliamJacksonPalmer (founderofColoradoSprings)gavehim100acresoflandonAustinBluffsand

$50,000 towards the start of his sanatorium .Solly selected one of the most importantand versatile architects working in SouthernColorado,ThomasMacLaren .MacLaren(1863-1928), acknowledged master of architecture,designedmanystructuresinColoradoSpringsincluding several sections of the opulentBROaDMOOR Hotel . The sanitorium buildingechoedtheaestheticsofthefoundersmergingwith Spanish-Moorish influence; it embodiedtheheritageofthebuildersofColoradoSpringsand the understated beauty of the Hispanicculture . Cragmor Sanitorium (now Main Hall)openeditsdoorstopatientsonJune20,1905,and thereafter became the most luxuriousplaceforwell-to-doconsumptivesintheUnitedStates .Dr .SollynamedthesiteCragmoor(latershortenedtoCragmor),reminiscentofthecragsandmoorshehadleftbehindinGreatBritain .

Cragmorbecamethehealthmeccaforartists,writers,andcorporate tycoonswho foundnotonlytheirhealthbutalsoanewhomeinColoradoSprings . Laura la Tille (Broadway performer),ConstancePulitzer(JosephPulitzer’sdaughter),MurielanePancost(concertsoprano),JeanetteMacCoil (well-knownNewYorkmusician),andRussellCheney (renownedpainter) spent timeandregainedtheirhealthatCragmor .

Upon his death Solly was memorialized as aworld class physician who had brought theColoradoSpringscommunitytoglobalacclaimfor itsoutstandinghealth facility . Ironically, theworld forgot Solly as Cragmor became evenmore established under the direction of newleadersinhealthcare:GeraldB .Webb,AlexiusM .Forster,OttoEinstein,andGeorgeJ .Dwire .

The1930’sstockmarketcrashbroughtfinancialdisaster tomany of theCragmorSanitorium’sexclusive clientele . The facility was adaptedto serve the health needs of less affluentpatients .Alexius Forster’sdeath in 1954 (tookcharge of Cragmor in 1910 at age 29) foundCragmor at a loss for medical and financialleadership .Thelastdecadeofthesanitorium’shomeopathic life was to become tied to theBureauofIndianAffairsasNavahoIndianswereflown in toCragmor .Thiswasoneof the first



publichealthprograms launchedby thenewlyformed U .S . Department of Health, Educationand Welfare (HEW) . The first Indian patientsarrivedatCragmor in1952with thesigningofa government contract between the CragmorFoundation and HEW . The institution wouldbe guaranteed a permanent base of financialsupport . In return,Cragmorwould provide forthemedicalneedsofhundredsof tuberculousNavajos . George J . Dwire,Managing Director,oversaw the decade of fiscal recovery for theinstitution . He created a dynamic programwhichnotonlyprovidedforthehealthneedsofhundredsofNavajosinfectedwithtuberculosisbut alsoexpanded to includeeducational andoccupational therapy . As the health crisis oftheNavajopeoplesubsidedsodidtheFederalfundingforCragmor .ByAprilof1962,remainingpatientswerebeingtransferredtootherfacilities .

Asearlyasthe1920s,theUniversityofColoradooffered courses at numerous ColoradoSprings locations including Colorado Collegeand various storefronts . By the mid-1960s,community leaders were pressing for a full-fledged University of Colorado presence inthe community . In his negotiations with then-Governor John Love, Hewlett-Packard (HP)co-founder David Packard, a Pueblo native,wanted a permanent University of Coloradocampus in Colorado Springs to support theeducationalneedsofcompanyemployees .The

combinationof thestate’sdesire toattractHPtoColoradoSpringsandGeorgeJ .Dwire’ssaleof the defunct 80-acre Cragmor Sanatoriumproperty for $1 led to birth of the ColoradoSprings Center of the University of Colorado .June15,1964,commemoratedthefundingandlegislationsignedbyGovernorLoveallowingtheUniversity of Colorado to assume custody ofCragmor .In1965,theColoradoSpringsCenteropenedon the south sideofAustinBluffs, anareawhichshowcasedaspectacularpanoramicviewofPikesPeakandtheGardenoftheGods;tuitionwas$13percredithour .Professorofficesin Cragmor Manor (now Cragmor Hall) wereequipped with small kitchenettes and privatebathrooms, due to thebuilding’s previous useas a nursing home, which was added to theSanitorium in the 1950s . A few offices werestill outfitted with this unique piece of historyas lateas2002;CragmorHallwascompletelyremodeledandreopenedinJanuary2004 .

From1965to1972theColoradoSpringsCenteroperatedasadivisionorextensionoftheBouldercampus . It became the first permanent homefor a growing following of scholars . ColoradoConstitutional Amendment 4, approved at the1972 Colorado General Election, designatedthe Colorado Springs campus and two othercentersasdistinctcampusesof theUniversityof Colorado . Dwire Hall opened as the firstsolely academic building on campus in 1972;

itwascompletely remodeled in2007 . In1974,the University of Colorado reorganized intofour campuses – Colorado Springs, Boulder,Denver, and the Health Sciences Center inDenver . The two Denver campuses laterconsolidated administratively in June 2004;the model was reversed in 2014 for eachcampus to again have its own chancellor .1974alsomarkedtheestablishmentofthefirstChancellor of the Colorado Springs campus,withtiestotheBouldercampusbeingchangedto have the campus directly reporting to thePresidentoftheUniversity .UCCSgrewovertheyears,andin1997thefirston-campusstudenthousingopened .Thatsameyearacommunityreferendum merged the city-owned Beth-ElCollegeofNursingwiththecampus .Duringthe2010-2011UniversityofColoradoSystem’snewbrandingcampaign,“at”wasremovedfromtheofficial UCCS name – University of ColoradoatColoradoSprings–tobecomeUniversityofColoradoColoradoSprings .

Because of the ties to HP, initial universityprogramsfocusedonengineeringandbusiness .Today,49yearsafteritsbeginning,UCCSoffers37 bachelor’s, 19 master’s, and five doctoraldegreesinsixcollegesandschools .Theinitialuniversityprogramsofengineeringandbusinessstill serve as pillars of the university, and arejoined by a broad range of degree programsoffered in the liberal arts and sciences, aswell as professional programs in nursing,

educationandpublicaffairstomeettheneedsofColorado’ssecond-largestmetropolitanareaandbeyond .Inrecentyears,programssuchastheCU Institute forBioenergetics and theCUCenteronAgingcastaneyetowardthefuture .In2012,ColoradoSpringsvotersagainaddedto the UCCS campus by agreeing to leasecity-ownedMemorial Hospital to University ofColorado Health . As part of the agreement,an administrative branch of theCUSchool ofMedicineisintheLaneCenteratUCCS .Fromits original 80 acres, UCCS has added 450additional acres along Austin Bluffs Parkwayand North Nevada Avenue . The studentpopulationhasgrownsignificantlyaswell;asoffall2014morethan11,000studentsareenrolledoncampus .

UCCSspringcommencementceremonieshavebeenheldattheoldBROaDMOORIceArena,acampusparkinglotwheretheOsborneCenterforScience&Engineeringnowstands,andtheBROaDMOORWorldArena .ThefirstDecembercommencementceremonyforsummerandfallgraduateswasheldonDecember14,2007atthe Pikes Peak Center . After only two years,the December graduates outgrew the PikesPeakCenter,andnowbothyearlyceremoniesare held at the BROaDMOOR World Arena .SincethefirstUCCScommencement in1975,approximately39,000studentshavegraduatedfrom the University of Colorado ColoradoSprings .


uccs mascOt

The University of ColoradoColorado Springs mascot is

the mountain lion . It is visibleacross campus in a variety ofways— as the artistic logo onUCCSshuttles,thegrandmarblestatue in the University CenterLowerPlaza, and thecostumedmascot who ignites crowds atathletic games and official cam-pusevents .Themountainlionisan integral part of campus life,but that has not always beenthecase .

As UCCS began to develop anintercollegiate sportsprogram inthe 1980s, it became neces-sary to establish team identitywithofficialcolorsandamascot . In1986,thefirst UCCS mascot, the hawk, was chosenand green and white sports uniforms werepurchased . TheEditor’sCorner in TheScribe(student newspaper)was even renamed “TheHawk’sEye .”Until this time, thecampuswastold it was part of the University of ColoradoSystem, and as such, already had a mascot-- the buffalo . NCAA rules stated that due todifferencesindivisionlevelsportsplayedattheBoulderandColoradoSpringscampusesthatUCCSwasnotallowedtoclaimthebuffaloasits mascot . At the June 18, 1987 Universityof Colorado Board of Regents Meeting, the“regents decided not to officially designatea school mascot and colors for UCCS, butinstead opted to allow UCCS to choose itsownmascot while still maintaining the officialCUcolorsofgold,silver,blueandblack” (TheScribe,August1987,pg1) .“CUGold”becamethe accepted identity of the sports teams inFall1987 .

In1991,thestudentbodyvotedforthe“FightingLongneckers” – or giraffes – to become theunofficial spirit symbol . This was personifiedby “Stretch,” a costumed giraffe obtainedby former chancellor Dwayne Nuzum . Otheroptions foranewspiritsymbolconsideredbythe Student Government Association (SGA)

Committee were eagles, prospectors, golddiggers, golden avalanche, and pronghorns .Popularityofthespiritsymbolwanedwithtime .Many did not connect the giraffe with “CUGold”andwantedastrongeridentity .

Notuntil1997didanewcampaignforaUCCSmascot begin .Realizing a need for a crediblemascot, the SGA collected nominees for anofficial mascot . The overwhelming suggestionwas themountain lion,whichwonby86%ofthe student body vote in spring 1998 . Sincethat time, it has been the officially recognizedsymboloftheUniversityofColoradoColoradoSprings .Dakota,a14-year-oldmountainlionattheCheyenneMountainZoo,wasadoptedbythestudentbodyinDecember2002 .Boomer,the costumed mascot, was named by thewinner of the “Name the Mascot” contest inSeptember2003andwasofficially introducedatFallFest(originalnameforBacktotheBluffsandHomecoming)thatyear .

Inspring2011theUCCSstudentbodyvotedtoofficiallychangethenameoftheschoolmascottoClyde,basedonthenameofa livemascotUCCSsupportedatthetime .
