Name of Org: UK Medical MissionsMembers in Org: around 75 but usually only about 30 go on the medical missiont tripContact: Nicole PappasEmail: [email protected]: 217-691-6255

Purpose of Org: UK Medical Missions is a student organization that travels to under developed countries in Latin and South America to provide medical care to those in need. Two years ago we traveled to Arequipa, Peru. On this trip, there were over 1140 total patients served, 1500 prescriptions filled, 710 patients receiving health education, and 66 total surgical procedures. Our work hugely impacted small towns surrounding Arequipa who otherwise would not have access to medical care at all. This last summer we had two mission trips, both to the Dominican Republic.

Type of Grant: Senate Special Project ($2,500)--Must Have a Sponsoring Senator

Event/Project: Medical Mission TripLocation: South AmericaDate: TBATime: TBA

Purpose of Event/Project: Overall, the cost of the trips was over $50,000. Due to the fact that we run solely on donations and fundraising, we are looking to be funded again by a senate special project. We are going to South America again this coming summer, the exact destination is still to be determined.

Total Cost: over $50,000

Org funds used: Member dues are only $10 per member. This goes to items necessary to run meetings, send letters, etc. Fundraising is the sole part of funds obtained by our organization. We strive to obtain donations from SSP, local businesses, Kaplan, etc.

Detailed Description of Request: The money requested by Student Government will solely be used to fund the trip project fee to South America.

Name of Org: Students Helping HondurasMembers in Org: 15Contact: Calvin HongEmail: [email protected]: 8595368530

Purpose of Org: In Honduras, the number of abandoned children is on the rise. Although the government provides some state-run orphanages, they are understaffed and underfunded. Thus, many of the orphans in these homes feel unwelcome; in addition, many also have no skills for the work force once they leave the orphanage. Thus, countless children resort to joining gangs in order to survive. These gangs (most notably MS13 –a gang that is notorious for drug, arms, and human trafficking) have caused mayhem within Honduras and internationally as well. However, Students Helping Honduras (SHH) strives to put an end towards gang violence. Our goal is to utilize education to uplift children out of poverty. We instill in the children skills that will prepare them for the workforce of Honduras, most notably, English. (Statistics state that Hondurans who know English earn 200% more over their lifetime then when compared to Hondurans who do not know English.) Furthermore, SHH provides free room and board for the orphans as well. It is with a combination of these things that Students Helping Honduras will put an end towards gang violence in Honduras.

Type of Grant: Senate Special Project ($2,500)--Must Have a Sponsoring Senator

Event/Project: Winter and Spring Service TripLocation: San Pedro Sula, HondurasDate: Due to the nature of this service trip, there are two main dates in which the members can go down to Honduras: December 27th – January 24th (in which the members go down for one week or more) or from March 14th-21st.Time:

Page 8: University of Kentucky Student Government - uksga.orguksga.org/.../2013/04/009-11-12-2014-Agenda-New1.docx  · Web viewTeach a weekly class that helps general chemistry students

Purpose of Event/Project: While in Honduras, our volunteers do one of two jobs: teaching English or construction. If our volunteers decide to do the teaching route, they will be in the classroom assisting the teacher in explaining concepts in English. These ideas range from telling time to simple sentence structure. If our volunteers however want to undergo the construction route, the volunteers will help expand upon the orphanage, library, or school. It is with these elements that SHH will catalyze the orphan students into becoming the future leaders of Honduras.

Total Cost: $19,750

Org funds used: Currently, Students Helping Honduras has two means of gathering funds: member dues and fundraising. In regards to the former, our chapter requires our members to pay a one-time fee of $15 (thus, $300 is collected from members); this expense is used to offset the cost of baking supplies, t-shirts, and other goods. In regards to the latter, Students Helping Honduras fundraises via various channels: bake sales, holding a booth at Night Market, gift wrapping during the holidays, etc. The revenue that is raised from these two arises to approximately $2500, in which the money is divided amongst the members.

Detailed Description of Request: Membership Dues and Fundraising:•$6,500: 10 Plane tickets from Lexington, Kentucky to San Pedro Sula:o 10 members want to go on the winter trip; as of September 15, 2014, the plane tickets are $650. •$4,000: 5 Plane tickets from Lexington, Kentucky to San Pedro Sula:o 5 members want to go on the spring trip; as of September 15, 2014, the plane tickets are $800.Total: $10,500.Funding Request:We are requesting funds for construction and school supplies. These supplies include, but are not limited to:o Cemento Cinderblockso Shovelso Gloveso Rebaro Deskso Pencils, Paper, Penso Bookso BackpacksThese costs are included within our registration fees. Of the $650 registration costs, $325 goes directly towards building supplies and school supplies. Total: $4,875

Purpose of Org: Alpha Phi Omega’s Alpha Zeta chapter at the University of Kentucky aspires to carry out the three cardinal principles of Leadership, Friendship, and Service in all of its activities in order to promote diversity, brotherhood, and growth, both on campus and in the Lexington community. We would like to strengthen our brotherhood so that every member feels welcome and actively engaged in the execution of our three cardinal principles throughout and after the college experience. Event/Project: Alpha Phi Omega - 2014 National ConventionLocation: Chicago, IllinoisDate: 12/27/14-12/30/14Time:

Purpose of Event/Project: The National Conference gives brothers from our chapter to go to Chicago and meet brothers from all over the country. In addition to the friendships that can be formed here, we can bring tons of valuable information back to our own chapter. Our executive board will have the opportunity to meet with similar positions and learn of many effective techniques and ideas to better execute their responsibilities. Brothers can also get ideas for new events and have their love for APO deepen by seeing the love that so many people have for this organization and for

helping others out of pure selflessness. All brothers will have a chance to greatly develop their leadership skills by participating in APO LEADS. LEADS is a leadership development program that consists of five components (Launch, Explore, Achieve, Discover, and Serve). Each component addresses a different aspect of leadership growth that will allow brothers to continue developing their leadership skills no matter their level of experience. As a whole, it is designed to equip beothers with the skills to enable them to be successful leaders and team members in any situation they encounter in college and beyond. LEADS is offered throughout the year, but each component is a separate class and is taught in different cities. The National Convention is the only place where four of the 5 LEADS courses are taught in the same place at the same time.

Total Cost: $12,680

Org funds used: Dues - $6 of "active" dues in the Spring goes towards our Nationals Convention Fund and $3 of "associate" dues from every semester go to the FundFundraising - We have been doing a lot of fundraising events this semester to raise funds to help our brothers get to Chicago. We have paired with organizations such as Kaplan, UK Dining, BD's Mongolian Grill, Panera, Barnes and Noble, and many more to fundraise as well as holding bake sales on campus. We have approximately $2500 in fundraising this semester.Between fundraising and dues, we have around $4600 to allocate between brothers who want to go to Nationals.

Detailed Description of Request: 8 hotel rooms at $89 per night for 5 nights - $3,560Registration cost for 32 brothers at $170 - $5,440Charter bus to Chicago and back at $115 per person - $3,680Our bylaws state that funding for this event take place in the following manner:1) Registration of the 2 voting delegates2) Travel expenses over $200 for the 2 voting delegates3) Registration of the brothers going4) Travel expenses over $200 of the brothers going. So SGA funding would be considered in the "pool" of money that will be distributed to our brothers in form of reimbursement after the event.
